Preparing for a life of service
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
When Maisie Dorwart rides the bus in Philadelphia, her traveling companion may slobber just a little bit, but he’s working very hard to be a good boy.
Maisie, a 2019 graduate of Manheim Central High School, is a graduate student at Temple University, where she’s pursuing a master’s degree in speechlanguage pathology. She rides SEPTA, attends class and runs

errands with Cyprus, a 6-monthold black Labrador/golden retriever mix she’s working with through Canine Companions. As a puppy raiser, Maisie spends time helping Cyprus get comfortable in a variety of situations, preparing him for the day he becomes a full-time service dog.
“I am socializing him,” Maisie said. I bring him to my classes. I bring him to class and everyone’s like, ‘Can Cyprus sit with me today?’ It’s been really cool to see everyone in my classes fully embrace him and to see my professors get so excited. If I have an exam in a class, I won’t bring him and they’re like, ‘Where is he?’”
Canine Companions is the country’s first and largest service dog organization serving adults, children and veterans with disabilities free of charge. Maisie was paired with Cyprus in October, and he’ll spend 18 months with her before he returns to the Canine Companions’ northeast regional training center in Medford, N.Y., where he’ll work with professional instructors to learn commands necessary to serve a person with disabilities.
“I work with Cyprus on basic
commands like ‘sit,’ ‘down’ and ‘up,’” Maisie said, noting that she takes him to puppy classes at the Philadelphia chapter of Canine Companions twice a month. When he goes to Medford, he’ll spend six to nine months learning 40-plus commands working with a professional trainer.” At the end of his training, Cyprus will be able to open and close doors, turn lights on and off, retrieve dropped items and even pull a manual wheelchair.

Friendship and family in “The Wizard of Oz”
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
“This is one of those shows that makes you feel good,” said director Dena McKell, describing “The Wizard of Oz.” “Everybody loves this show and how it brings that aspect of family and home together.”
“The Wizard of Oz” will be performed by Encore Home School Productions at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 14, through
Saturday, March 16, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 17.
Although the musical is based on the iconic movie, the directors encouraged the students to make their characters their own.
“We’re not imitating the movie,” said assistant director Jill Panyard. “We wanted to shape the characters a little differently than the movie. We are shaping Dorothy a bit more like a tomboy, like a hardworking farm girl.”
The cast features about 40 students, ranging in age from

Auditions set for “The Little Mermaid Jr.”
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Do you want to be part of the world under the sea? Students in grades three through 12 are invited to audition for “The Little Mermaid Jr.” The show will be presented in June by Manheim Performing Arts Community Theatre (MPACT). Auditions will be held on Saturday, March 30, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim.
“Participation is open to students from any school district,
as this is a community organization,” said Charito Faulkner, MPACT director and board president. Performers will sign up for an audition timeslot and should come prepared with a 30- to 60-second song and a 30- to 60-second monologue.
Charito and her husband, Karl, formed MPACT after volunteering for an organization called iStage Performing Arts. “Around 2018, the owners had to dissolve the organization for personal reasons, and we approached them to take over the organization,”

Lancaster Modern Etiquette has announced the launch of its newest classes “Dine with Style” and “Poised and Pretty.”
she recalled. “At the time, our son and daughter participated, and we couldn’t imagine letting it go since we had seen the profound impact it had on our own children and other children in the community.” The couple recruited other volunteers and rebranded to form the nonprofit MPACT.
The organization’s mission is simple: to create a platform where both performers and community can unite, fostering a shared love and appreciation for the art of theater. “All levels of performers are
welcome to join as MPACT is where you go to learn and grow,” Charito said.
The organization currently rents space in a local church gym to practice, and performances are held at the Junction Center.
When she’s not at MPACT, Charito is an elementary school teacher. She indulges her love of performing, including a background in chorus, cheerleading, color guard and musical performance, as a volunteer with MPACT. “The passion for performing has always been a part of me,” she said. “When our children expressed interest in theater, my husband and I naturally became volunteers. Karl taught me the intricacies of set building, and I couldn’t have undertaken this endeavor without his support.”
Along with roles for performers, students are encouraged to participate as a member of the crew for “The Little Mermaid Jr.” “There are chances to get involved backstage for students in grades seven through 12,” Charito stated. “The behind-thescenes efforts play a crucial role in ensuring a smooth production.”
She hopes students will try out for the musical and encourages anyone who isn’t already a part of MPACT to consider joining.
“Engaging in the program brings joy, and we welcome individuals of all skill levels,” she said. “There’s always a place for you in MPACT. Many participants have expressed feeling like part of a family.”

5 to 18. Students represent 12 school districts, including Elizabethtown, Donegal and Columbia.
Rehearsals for “The Wizard of Oz” began in November with character sessions, offering students an opportunity to delve into their characters’ back story to help create in-depth characters on stage.
“Those nuances of the characters are what take good shows and make them great shows,” Panyard said.
Grace Miller, a freshman from Hershey who portrays the Wicked Witch of the West, said audiences can expect to see a polished,
elaborate performance.
“They will be blown away by the dance numbers. They are amazing,” she stated. She added that learning to perform the show to recorded music has been challenging, but the cast members are up to the task.
“We have to work with the music, and we have a very limited amount of time to get lines in before the music switches to something else,” she explained. “With a live orchestra, they can slow it down if they need to, but we have to be sure we’re on pace.”
Josiah Evans, a senior from Elizabethtown who
plays The Cowardly Lion, said he challenged himself not to be influenced by the movie or the well-known character he’s portraying.
“I had to tell myself that every depiction of this role is going to be unique,” he said. “I wanted to create my own part.”
He encourages audiences to see the show, adding, “It’s centered on friendship and the values of having good friends and the values of appreciating all you have in your life and being grateful. People should come see the show because it’s going to be very heartwarming.”
Grace emphasized that it
takes a team of parents and students to pull together a show full of elaborate props, costumes and sets.
“When you see this show, you’re only seeing the tip of the iceberg. The parents and the kids have spent countless hours on behindthe-scenes work, and you only see the end product,” she said. “To know the full extent of what has gone into creating this show, it’s really amazing to think about that.”

grew up with a dog as a pet. When she learned about Canine Companions, she knew she wanted to be a puppy raiser. She waited until she finished college and moved out on her own in an apartment in Philadelphia, where she has the time and space to devote to Cyprus.
She knows giving Cyprus up in February of next year will be tough, but she’s excited to think about how he’ll make a difference in someone’s life.
She plans to receive updates on how Cyprus is faring, and she’s looking forward to continuing to serve as a puppy raiser with other dogs.
“I think about what Cyprus will do for someone’s life in the future and
the benefits of a service dog for someone who has signed up for one with Canine Companions,” she said, noting that Canine Companions covers the cost - upward of $50,000 - of preparing a dog for service. “Saying goodbye to Cyprus is going to be one of the hardest things I’ve done, but when he graduates and he’s with his person, I know that will be very rewarding.”

Lancaster County Bird Club (LCBC) has formed a strategic partnership with the North Museum of Nature and Science with the aim of enhancing ornithological education and outreach in southcentral Pennsylvania. The partnership will put special emphasis on finding ways to share the science of ornithology and the hobby of birding with residents of southcentral Pennsylvania and help youths develop an
understanding of wild birds and the conservation issues they face.
As part of the partnership approved by the LCBC board of directors in December 2023, LCBC will now hold its September through March programs at the museum on the second Thursday of each of those months at 7 p.m. The programs are free and open to the public, and feature a speaker on a topic related to the science of ornithology

and the hobby of birding.
LCBC and the North Museum will also look at ways to collaborate on enhancing existing educational offerings related to wild birds and their conservation as well as expanding birding-related offerings to particularly target youths through engaging a variety of youth-focused organizations. The partnership will also open ways for both entities to collaborate on birding-related offerings at Millport Conservancy; the museum recently took charge of oversight and support roles at the conservancy and will utilize the conservancy as a permanent outdoor classroom space. LCBC and the North Museum will also explore ways to work together to see that the museum’s world-class ornithological collection - with most specimens dating back to the 1800s - will continue to be available for generations to come.
LCBC has a long history of involvement and association with the museum resulting from the club’s
early ties to Franklin & Marshall College and ornithologists and staff members at the college who were key to the museum’s founding. LCBC remains one of the longest-supporting financial contributors to the museum, supporting the museum’s natural history program and ornithological collection since its founding.
LCBC has been dedicated to securing the cultivation of public sentiment in the preservation of Lancaster County’s native bird life since its founding in December 1937. The club is a nonprofit membership organization with a mission focused on bird observation, conservation and education, and promoting the recording and dissemination of bird observations. The club consists of more than 350 members and fulfills its mission through building partnerships and a variety of offerings, such as field trips, lectures, programs and scholarships. More information is available at www.lancasterbirdclub.org.

HCLC plans Second Friday Program
The Circle Legacy Center (CLC) will present a Second Friday Program on Friday, March 8, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Community Mennonite Church,
328 W. Orange St., Lancaster. A local Native American woman will share her story of surviving domestic violence. She will also present information about trauma-informed responses, how people can assist victims of domestic violence, and human trafficking of native peoples in the past and present.
Attendees are asked to bring food to share if they are able, along with their own place settings.
Annual pet-themed art exhibit set

BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
Mulberry Art Studios, 21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster, is now accepting submissions for its sixth annual We Love Our Pets show. Artists and pet owners in Lancaster County are encouraged to enter original artwork of their animal companions until Friday, April 12. Accepted submissions will be displayed at Mulberry Art Studios in May for National Pet Month.
Amateur and professional artists of all ages are invited to participate in the show, and submissions may be artwork in any medium, such as painting, drawing, sculpture or photography. Artists may submit as many pieces as they desire. To view the full list of guidelines for submissions, email gallery curator Stephanie Kulfan at Stephanie.mulberryart @gmail.com.
Every year, Mulberry Art Studios partners with a local nonprofit organization for the We Love Our Pets show; a portion of all artwork sold at the exhibit will benefit the Sebastian Foundation for Animal Rescue. Amy Garrety, the organizations founder, will attend the opening night of the exhibit from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 3. Garrety and a team of volunteers and rescued dogs from the Sebastian Foundation will receive
donations at the door. We chose to have this show benefit Sebastian Foundation for Animal Rescue our very first year because they are a local nonprofit that really pours their all into helping the animals in our area find homes, Kulfan said. We have continued to have it benefit the Sebastian Foundation each year because the more we get to know them, the more we love them and all they do.
Mulberry Art Studios partners with various school districts in Lancaster County to incorporate the show in art teachers curricula, allowing students to create pieces for the show during class time. Awards will be given out for Best in Show and Peoples Choice in the adult and youth categories. The recipients of the Best in Show award will
be chosen by a panel of artists.
Although accepted artwork will remain on display until the end of May, vendors will only be present during the opening reception. Last year, vendors sold a variety of items, including dog treats, pet accessories, pet portraits, animal grooming services and refreshments for humans.
We get some really incredible artwork that is deserving of awards. But personally, my favorite part is when little kids have submitted art into the show, Kulfan said. I get to see their faces light up as they come into the building and see their artwork up on the gallery wall with all the other artwork.
