After more than a decade bringing musicals and dramas to the New Holland area, Cavod Theatre has looked back to the organization’s roots to stage a junior version of one of the theater’s first productions - “The Music Man.” Last set to play in December 2020 but postponed due to COVID19 restrictions, the show, “The Music Man Jr.,” will be presented at Cavod Theatre, 641 W. Main St., New Holland, at 7 p.m. on Fridays, March 19 and 26; at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, March 20 and 27; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays, March 21 and 28. “It’s one of the more fun junior shows,” said director Alex Weaver, who grappled with the challenges of rehearsing under COVID-19 restrictions. Weaver divided the 36-member cast into “family groupings,” and taught the show’s lovebirds, Harold Hill, played by Derrick Lambert, and Marian Paroo, played by Soren Lefever, how to portray emotion without getting too close or looking directly at each other while singing.

Playing team basketball, the Manheim Central boys’ basketball team upset Conrad Weiser, 50-45, March 2 in the first round of the District Three Class 5A tournament. The Barons, winners of seven straight games, started off slow, trailing 14-3 after the first quarter. Their only bucket in the first came on a Trey Grube 3-pointer early in the quarter. “Slow was an understatement,” Barons’ coach Charlie Fisher said. “We were getting good shots. They were just missing. In the last minute of the quarter, we missed three layups. It was to be expected. Look at district games and there are a lot of low scores. I told the guys we are getting all the looks we want. We just needed to calm down.” Once the Barons, seeded 10th, calmed down in second quarter,
they started to score and this allowed them is press on defense. Manheim trailed 19-18 at halftime. In the third, Logan Shull hit a big 3-pointer and Grube, who led the Barons with 19 points, including four 3-pointers, nailed a trey to give the Barons the lead. Collin Thompson also hit a big 3-pointer, as Manheim went on a 15-4 run. In all, the Barons had six 3-pointers in the game. MC led 36-30 after three quarters. With the lead, the Barons held the ball and made Conrad Weiser come out of its zone defense. Once the seventh seed Scouts went to man-to-man defense, the Barons’ lead expanded to 11 quickly. “Judd Novak had some huge takes to extend the lead,” Fisher said. “Wyatt (Becker) muscled a key block. We missed some foul shots, but we took care of it on the other end with strong
defense. We played fast when we needed to. I am very pleased with how we played.” Manheim outscored the Scouts 16-6 in second quarter and 17-10 in third. Cam Eberly added 10 points. Fisher was pleased with the how the squad responded to early adversity. “From a team aspect, nobody moped or got down on each other,” he said. “They made the extra pass and played team defense. Everything we did, every adjustment, the guys responded.” The Barons tuned up for the playoffs by hosting Columbia Feb. 26 in a wild back-and-forth shootout that Manheim pulled out 77-75. “Seventy-seven points, that doesn’t happen too often at Manheim in basketball,” Fisher said. “That was fun to watch.” MC went on a 12-2 run to start the third quarter. Grube’s driving bucket and free throw gave the Barons an 18-point lead, 48-29, with 4:16 to go in the third. Grube, who finished with a team-high 25 points, scored 10 in the quarter. He also had an assist on a pass inside to Becker, who posted 13 points. The Barons had five players notch double figures in scoring, including Judd Novak (10 points), Eberly (11) and Matt Siegrist (14). Columbia’s Kerry Glover, who had a game-high 27 points (including 14 in the fourth quarter) got hot. He hit two 3-pointers in the third and another trey early in the fourth to help the Crimson Tide go on a 17-6 run late in the third quarter and early
in the fourth to mount a comeback. Columbia cut the Baron’s lead to 61-60 with 3:23 to play, but would get no closer. Grube, who had seven points in the fourth, converted five free throws. The Barons had six missed free throws late in the game, but spread the ball and found open teammates to gain the win. Columbia (14-4) nailed a trey at the buzzer to make the final margin two points. “A lot of our website is education-based,” said Caryn Thompson, marketing coordinator for Mental Health America of Lancaster County. “What we’re trying to do with the blog is complement that with personal stories. As far as mental health goes, it’s a topic that’s not just about facts and figures. We can tell you all the stats in the world, but that is not always going to get our point across. Sometimes, the experience of other people educates just as much.” The blog is being written by in-house writers, including Thompson, but will also be open to community submissions. Categories include educational pieces from people including physicians and counselors, personal stories and a creative category. For this last category, Thompson emphasized that the blog could include a variety of submissions. “Not everybody connects with words,” she explained. “If somebody wants to send in art, like photography or paintings ... we’re OK with that, too.”

Thompson already has five or six submissions for the blog and said that anyone who is interested in contributing can get help to get started. “We have a list of topics if you’re not sure what to write about,” she stated. “We can give you some prompt sentences to give you a boost as a way to start writing. You don’t have to keep going on that topic, but it might get your creative juices flowing.” Submissions will be vetted by the organization, and Thompson is hoping to post weekly to the blog. “When you have people out there in the world telling their personal stories, that helps reduce the stigma surrounding mental health,” she remarked. “You can see that here is a human being who is living with this diagnosis, but she is still going to work, still feeding her family, still contributing to society. These personal stories can help other people learn what it’s like to live with anxiety or to be bipolar, for example.” Thompson said the blog has a personal connection because she’s the mother of a 20-year-old son who has bipolar disorder. She started writing about her experiences as a parent when he was in middle school, and her writing was shared with other parents. “I know that personal stories can help other people,” she stated. “And if personal stories are engaging, people are more likely to read the educational information on our website and more likely to want to learn more.” For more information about submitting material to the blog, readers may contact Thompson at cthompson@mhalancaster.org.

The celebration continued on Feb. 12 with an online party hosted by Tim and Demi Tebow. “ We encouraged (everyone) to dress up however they liked and just have fun,” Ketcham explained. “Some set their tables and dressed up, some were served by their parents or caregivers, some sat at the computer, some sat in their living rooms.” Despite the changes that had to be made this year, Ketcham said she was happy to be able to provide a celebration for the participants. “It was important for us to give them something to look forward to,” she stated. “So many of our guests have missed out on so much due to COVID. I was glad we could provide something safe and fun for them.”

development,” said Weaver. “I am trying to help them understand that every line in the script is in there for a reason to help them … understand their character a little better.” Weaver noted that it has been satisfying to see students take a break from what is happening in the world when they come to rehearsals. “(I enjoy) seeing the kids come in here and have fun for three or four hours and forget about everything else in a safe environment putting on a show,” he said. After having to reschedule, the director is especially looking forward to sharing the hard work of the cast with audiences. “I really hope audiences can see there is still fun to be had in bad times,” he said, adding that he also hopes the theme of authenticity will shine through. “The message behind the show is being able to find your true self,” he explained. “You don’t have to lie or be fake. It’s OK to be who you are.” Tickets, which are limited, are available at https://cavod.org or by calling 717-354-3355.

The plot of the musical revolves around Hill, a con man who pretends to be a band leader. He sells musical instruments and band uniforms to the residents of River City, Iowa, while promising to train the members of the new band. The townspeople, with the exception of librarian and piano teacher Paroo, fall for Hill’s tricks. Although Paroo sees the truth, after witnessing Hill helping her younger brother, Winthrop, played by Brandt Esh, overcome his lisp, Paroo begins to fall for the trickster. “The Music Man” has been a staple of musical theater since it debuted on Broadway in 1957. The show is known for toe-tappers such as “76 Trombones” and “Ya Got Trouble,” along with the softer melodies of “‘Til There Was You,” and “Goodnight, My Someone.” Because “The Music Man” is such a popular show, Weaver is planning to deliver the classic tale but still offer audiences a bit of a fresh take by encouraging his actors, ages 9 to 17, to look into the depth of their characters. “I am a big fan of character

The objectives of the contest are to promote the beauty and versatility of wool fabrics and yarns; to encourage personal creativity in sewing, knitting, and crocheting with wool fabrics and yarns; to recognize creative skills; and to develop life skills, including being responsible for one’s self, being a good sport, accepting judges’ decisions, and learning about and appreciating diversity. Each entrant constructed at least one wool or wool-blend garment using knitting, crocheting, and/or sewing skills. Olivia completed a twopiece ensemble for her first sewing project with wool. The chocolate wool top features bell sleeves, which Olivia designed and added to a Simplicity pattern. The skirt is constructed using a plaid Pendleton wool and is fully lined. It was created using a McCall’s skirt pattern, and
Julia Schreiner was the third runner-up in the Adult division of the National Make It With Wool Contest.

Olivia designed and added a ruffle after coming across a similar skirt in a retail store. Olivia learned new skills so she could include a Hong Kong hem and an invisible zipper on the skirt. Olivia is a member of the 4-H Friends Club in Lebanon County. Schreiner created a twopiece ensemble. Her straightcut, tan and black plaid skirt is cut below the knee and features a sewn-in slip for added comfort. It has an invisible zipper and faced waistline with a pleated lower back, and the pleats are cut on the bias. Her coordinating vest utilizes three different wools, bound buttonholes, piping, decorative stitching, and buttons. The vest pattern was cut from an actual garment rather than a commercial pattern.

Two residents of southcentral Pennsylvania earned awards at the 2021 National Make It With Wool Contest on Feb. 6. Olivia Morrissey of Annville was among the top 10 winners in the Junior division for youths ages 13 to 16, and Julia Schreiner from Penryn was named as third runner-up in the Adult division. Alyssa Neff from Harrisburg also competed in the Senior division for people age 25 and up. There were more than 20 state entries in each division. The top 10 juniors; top 10 seniors, people ages 17 to 24; and top five adults were recognized. Fabrics, sewing books, equipment, and notions were awarded at the state and national levels. Scholarships were also available at the national level. The national contest, previously scheduled to be held in Denver, Colo., was held in a virtual and mail-in format. Contestants shipped their ensembles for judging in January. They also provided a video which showed them modeling their garments, along with still photos of their ensemble. Each entrant’s ensemble was flat-judged and then judged while being modeled by the entrant on video. Judging was based on poise, construction of the garments, fit and wearability, and promotion of the versatility of wool.

Imagine having the opportunity to win a designer purse every day during the month of April. That is exactly the premise of a new fundraiser being planned by Help The Fight, a nonprofit organization that supports individuals living with breast cancer. As part of the designer purse giveaway, community members are invited to purchase a ticket, which will be entered into a random drawing. There will be 30 winners in the 30 days of April. Ticket holders must be 18 years of age or older to participate. “Each day we will pull a name,” explained Lynda Charles, president and founder of the organization. “The name that we pull will get the designer bag of that day. Hopefully, people will buy more than one ticket.” The giveaway replaces the organization’s previous fundraiser, a designer bag bingo. “Last year, just prior to COVID, we actually had our very first designer bag bingo at the Farm and Home Center in Lancaster,” Charles reported. “People loved it but with COVID our fundraising
events have altered, just as everyone else’s has. We decided to do this for the month of April.” Currently, the organization has about 20 bags that it purchased brand new by designers Michael Kors, Kate Spade, Tory Burch, Coach and others. Sponsors are needed to fund the cost of the remaining bags. “We have a lot of styles and colors,” Charles pointed out. “With our choices, we are trying to appeal to as many people as possible.” Winners of the bags will be contacted by phone, and their names will be announced on the Help The Fight website and Facebook page. All proceeds will benefit the charity, which provides breast cancer patients with funds to buy groceries, pay rent and mortgages, and cover day care fees and medical bills. It also provides funds for cancer screenings. “Wherever the need is of the patient is what we help with,” Charles said. “We have filled oil tanks and put tires on a vehicle for a one-vehicle family. We have paid electric bills and bought Christmas presents by giving a family a Walmart gift card.” Charles lost her mother to

breast cancer in 1989 at the age of 49. In March of 2009, her sister was diagnosed with breast cancer. Soon after, the charity began. “Within weeks of our sister’s diagnosis, the assistant at our office was also diagnosed,” Charles recalled. “My husband, Dave, and I wanted to be able to help. We held a bake sale to help with their expenses. We raised over $9,000.” She said that in addition to the bake sale, the money was raised through sponsors and a sale of T-shirts. In 2020, Help The Fight assisted about 200 individu-
als. “COVID shut things down for a while. Those that needed assistance or screenings did not get them. We had a real rush when things opened,” Charles said. “Cancer is so unkind, and it does not stop during a pandemic.” Tickets for the designer purse giveaway must be purchased by Monday, March 22. For more information, to purchase tickets or to sponsor a handbag, readers may call 717-455-7095, email helpthefightnow@gmail.com or visit www.helpthefight.org or www.facebook.com/ helpthefight.
Mock Trial Second Friday Championships Slated Activities Planned The Pennsylvania Bar Association (PBA) Statewide High School Mock Trial Competition will be held virtually this year, with 233 teams from 199 high schools across Pennsylvania set to compete in the district and regional levels. Sponsored by the PBA Young Lawyers Division, Pennsylvania’s mock trial program is now in its 38th year and is one of the largest in the nation. During the competition, eight-member student teams are given the opportunity to argue both sides of the case before a judge. The students, who play the roles of lawyers, witnesses, plaintiffs, and defendants, are assisted by teacher coaches and lawyer advisers in preparing for competition. Lawyers and community leaders serve as jurors and sometimes judges for the mock trials. The juries determine the winners in each trial based on the teams’ abilities to prepare their cases, present arguments, and follow court rules.
The district and regional levels of the competition will continue throughout February and March. At the conclusion of the local competitions, 16 high school mock trial teams will advance to the PBA Statewide Mock Trial Championships, which will take place on Friday, March 26, and Saturday, March 27. The winning team of the state championship will represent Pennsylvania in the national mock trial finals to be held virtually from Thursday, May 13, through Saturday, May 15. This year’s hypothetical case, Estate of George Romero v. Ashley Williams, is a criminal trial to determine whether the defendant is guilty of murdering George Romero with a chemical the defendant prepared. For more information and to read this year’s case, readers may visit www.pabar.org and click on “2021 PBA Statewide Mock Trial Competition turns virtual.” Interested volunteers may contact Maria Engles at 800932-0311, ext. 2223.
