Humanity shines on stage in “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”

If you plan to see Manheim Central High School’s production of “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” come prepared. Bring tissues, said the cast members, because it’s an emotional show, and be prepared for a transformative experience. “It is a beautiful show,” said sophomore Ava Graff, who plays Esmerelda. “If you leave the auditorium and you don’t question how you do things in your life, I don’t think we did our job.”

“The Hunchback of Notre Dame” will be performed at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 16, through Saturday, March 18, as well as at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 19. Because of ongoing construction at the high school, it will be performed at Manheim Central Middle School, 261 White Oak Road.

The show follows the story of Quasimodo, a deformed man sent to live in the bell tower of Notre

Dame. “He longs to be in the outside world,” said senior Lauren Huber, who plays the role. “He finally gets out and gets to meet different characters. … It’s based on the Disney movie, but the show is a darker version.”

As Quasimodo explores the world outside the church, he learns that everyone has his or her own struggles. “There are so many themes and messages in this show,” Ava noted. “It’s a reflection of humanity and the fact that we always try to fit in and be loved. It’s about what makes a monster versus what makes a man, and it’s about the comparison of light and dark.”

Senior Madeline LaFrance, who portrays Clopin, said the show will appeal to children and adults.

“Children may not understand all the themes, but there’s a lot to look at on stage and a lot to see,” she explained.

Performing “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” has been a months-long

endeavor for the 77 cast, crew and orchestra members. The show will also feature Manheim Central teachers, alumni, community members and students in the choir. “We have put a lot of hard work into this show, and it’s been a process,” said senior Jonathan Wenger, who plays Frollo.

Join author Robert Dugoni for a talk

There’s an occupational hazard Mary Ann Steinhauer faces as the leader of the Council of Friends of Public Libraries. “People will stop me in the street and ask, ‘Are you having another author event?’” she said with a laugh. Thankfully for Steinhauer, the answer is “yes.” The Council of Friends will host award-winning author Robert Dugoni on Thursday, April 13, at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. The event will begin at 11 a.m.

Dugoni is perhaps best known for his crime mysteries and legal thrillers. His Tracy Crosswhite

police series has sold more than 8 million copies worldwide. Dugoni is also the author of the Charles Jenkins espionage series and the David Sloane legal thriller series. Additionally, he has written several standalone novels, including “The 7th Canon,” “Damage Control,” “The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell: A Novel” and “The World Played Chess.” Ticket holders for the April talk will receive a copy of Dugoni’s latest novel, “Her Deadly Game.” Dugoni will be joined on stage by Scott LaMar of WITF, who will facilitate the conversation. A book signing and a meet-and-greet with the author will be held after the event.

“We started rehearsing in October. It’s a large undertaking and a very complex show.”

Although the show has been a challenge to pull off, the cast members all agree the result will be entertaining and visually stunning. “Everyone should come out

and see this show,” Jonathan said. “There are so many great messages in it, and there are a lot of great songs.”

Scholarship offered to future EMTs and paramedics

Michael P. McMahon was a true Renaissance man. A 1993 graduate of Lancaster Catholic High School, he was a registered nurse, a flight attendant and a school bus driver. Each job offered Michael a chance to help people, something he truly believed in. Although he gave his all to everything he did, he was most passionate about his work as an emergency medical technician (EMT). When Michael passed away from colon cancer in October 2021, his family turned its grief into an opportunity to help others. The Michael P. McMahon

Scholarship for Emergency Medical Services (EMS) was created to help any resident of Lancaster County who wishes to pursue an EMT, Advanced EMT or Paramedic Certification.

Michael was the oldest of four children and the son of Mike and Joanne McMahon. “He was loving, and he was loved by his family and friends,” Mike stated.

Added Joanne, “Michael’s life was so varied. You couldn’t put him in a box. If he was interested in something, he’d do it. … They say it’s the dash between the years on your gravestone that matters. Michael made the most of that dash.”

Joanne noted that her free-spirited son loved to try new things, but one career path made all the difference. “Being an EMT and eventually a paramedic changed his life,” she shared. “He grew as a person. It made him who he was.”

When Joanne sat down to write Michael’s obituary, and she got to the part about giving flowers, she had another idea. “She said, ‘Let’s start a scholarship in his name,’” recalled Mike, noting that they asked family members and friends to contribute.

“Our goal is to find as many people to help as we can,” said Joe McMahon, Michael’s brother. “We want to pay for as many as we can and give people the opportunity to do this as a career, to help people to do something every day that they can be proud of.”

Noted Mike, “This is a full scholarship, based on capability and need.” It will cover tuition up to $7,500.

To help develop the scholarship, the McMahon family reached out to the Lancaster County EMS Council, a nonprofit organization made up of representatives from all of the EMS agencies serving Lancaster County. The initial scholarship was open to students and alumni at Lancaster Catholic High School, but a second round is being offered countywide.

The scholarship is open to both current students and adults.

“Michael was kind of a late bloomer, so the ideal candidate could be someone who has stayed home with their kids and now wants to get back into the workforce,” said Michael’s sister Mary Kate Walsh. “Or it could be someone who wants to change careers and needs financial support to do that.”

The scholarship is meant to be a stepping stone into a career that helps people, said Michael’s sister Colleen Murphy, who added, “We need more helpers in the world like

my brother.”

The application process for the scholarship will run from Saturday, April 1, through Friday, June 30. Scholarship winners will be notified by Monday, July 31. For more information, to obtain a scholarship application or to make a donation to the scholarship fund, contact Joe McMahon at joe@joemcmahonlaw.com.

The bulk of the Barons’ swim team wrapped up their 2022-2023 season with a trip to Cumberland Valley High School on March 3rd and 4th,

competing in the District 3-2A Championships. The lone exception was Ashley Mellinger who took gold in the only two events she swam.

“It was great to see her win two golds as a freshman,” said head coach Heather Fittery, “She likes competition and should continue to improve through-

out her high school years.”

Mellinger’s highlight win was in the 100-butterfly where her gold medal winning time of 57.22 was her fastest of the season and 1.7 seconds ahead of silver medalist Annie Gao of Schuylkill Valley. She was not able to post her best time of the season in the 200 IM win but her 2:11.45 was still over five seconds faster than Made-

lyn Blough of Trinity, leaving Fittery to say, “Neither race was close competition for her. States will be different, giving her some good competition to swim against.”

A handful of other Barons joined Mellinger at Cumberland Valley, tallying four trips to the podium and a slew of personal best times. Anderson Pilsner and Bryce Garber led the podium charge, making three trips each. The pair, along with Chase Kirchner and Bryce Steach collected a sixth-place medal in the 200 IM relay thanks to a 1:48.08. Another relay medal came in the 200-freestyle with Garber and Pilsner getting help from Steach and Avery Kirchner,

securing eighth place with a time of 1:38.02. The pair made their final podium run in an individual event but still ended up together on the 100-backstroke podium. Garber took sixth with his 58.05 and Pilsner seventh with a 58.09. Both came close to making another podium trip but fell short with Pilsner’s 11th place finish in the 200 IM and Garber’s 12th place run in the 50-freesytle.

The Barons had another near miss in the 400-freestyle where Chase Kirchner, Avery Kirchner, Ryan Moreno, and Caleb Bower finished ninth with a time of 3:51.97. Three of those four relay members branched out into solo events with mixed results. Moreno’s 58.27 ended up 24th in the 100-freestyle, Chase Kirchner finished his 100-butterfly race

in 1:00.85, good enough for 17th and added a 21st place run in the 100-breaststoke with a 1:11.41.

Avery Kirchner also took part in two events, finishing 13th in the 500-freestyle (5:29.24) and 16th in the 200freestyle (2:02.75). Steach was the final Baron that added two solo events in the district meet, finishing 14th in the 100-butterfly (59.81) and 17th in the 100-backstroke (1:03.20).

participant of postseason high school sports, and left Central looking to regroup as they head off to the PIAA-5A tournament.

As for the district 5A final, the opening frame had the flow of a back and forth, nip/tuck style of game, leaving the two sides deadlocked at 13-13. Exeter mashed the gas at the start of the second quarter, tipping off a 19-10 run leading into the break. Manheim was able to shrink that 32-23 halftime deficit a bit with a 14-12 third quarter edge but the good times were short lived. The Eagles regained control of the game, leading to a 23-16 sprint to the final horn, leaving Manheim Central district runnerup for the second time in school history.

Trey Grube netted a team high 19 in the loss with Aaron Enterline the only other Baron in double digits with 14. Collin Neiles (seven points), Jackson Tracy (five points), Chase Book (five points) and Sam Witmer (three points) accounted for the remaining Manheim points.

On the same day the boys dropped their 5A final, the Lady Barons solidified their PIAA seed with a 53-38 romp over Lower Dauphin in Manheim. The win gave Central the fifth seed out of District 3, sending the Lady Barons into the western half of the PIAA-5A bracket.

The game never felt in jeopardy as Central came out hot with Maddie Knier collecting 11 of her game high 26 during Manheim’s 19-6 opening quarter blitz. The Lady Falcons were able to hang with Central over the middle portion of the contest, trimming that 13-point cushion down to 11 heading into the final quarter. Once there Knier and company used a 17-13 edge to slam the door on Lower Dauphin and secure the win.

Kaylie Kroll added 14 in the win while Payton Snyder (six points), Abbie Reed (five points) and Emma Hartman (two points) accounted for the remaining points.

Born and raised

We are fortunate to live in an area that has long been regarded as the “Garden Spot of America.” Generational farming is a part of the Lan-

caster County culture. In fact, we lead the nation in young farmers. According to the most recent Economic Impact study by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, 14% of farms in Pennsylvania had a young

producer (defined as someone age 35 or younger) operating as the primary farmer. At last count, Lancaster County had 2,400 young producers, twice as much as the second-ranked county in the nation, LaGrange County, Ind. In addition, Lancaster County leads the nation in farmland preservation, with more than 113,000 acres preserved. As promising as that sounds for the future, we’re still losing more than 1,200 acres of Lancaster County farmland each year to development, according to the Lancaster Farmland Trust (LFT), a nonprofit organization with the mission of preserving agriculture and stewarding the land in Lancaster County. For more information on LFT, visit https://lancasterfarmlandtrust.org.

Farming can be a back-breaking, often undervalued vocation that doesn’t stop at 5 p.m. on Friday. Like we often do with first responders and the military, thank a farmer for his or her service to our community. Look at labels and buy locally. See where your milk, produce, and meat are coming from. When you shop at local supermarkets, if you don’t see local produce in season, ask why the store isn’t providing locally sourced foods. Encourage the store to offer local produce so shoppers can easily support local farmers.

The Lancaster County landscape is dotted with roadside produce stands when crops are in season. Most of these stands and farmers markets won’t open until later in the spring or summer. Below is a list of some of the many locations where you can get fresh local produce, meats, and cheeses.

and to date, the group has raised more than $140,000. This year, the Council of Friends has established a partnership with Midtown Scholar Bookstore in Harrisburg, which will provide copies of Dugoni’s backlist books to purchase at the event.

Steinhauer noted that the author event will include time for questions from the audience. “It’s always a life-altering experience to actually hear the author and ask questions or hear questions being asked,” she said. “To be in the presence of people who are so creative and someone who provides so much to us in terms of reading, it’s really incredible. … I find that it’s really a wonderful way to spend an afternoon, and when people leave, they are inspired. I have yet to see where that hasn’t happened.”

Egg hunt set for children with special needs

Now I Can Foundation Northeast will hold its inaugural Special Needs Egg Hunt on Wednesday, March 22, at 5:30 p.m. on the grounds of Listrak, 100 W. Millport Road, Lititz. All children with special needs age 18 and under and their siblings are invited to attend.

The hunt will be divided into four areas: one for people with mobility issues; an area for participants with visual impairment, which will use beeping eggs; a “quiet and calm” area; and a traditional large group scramble.

The event is free and open to the public, and parking is available. Participants should bring their own baskets. The egg hunt will be held outside, weather permitting, or inside in the case of inclement weather. Guest author Sally McKinney will read stories aloud and share her new book. Preregistration is required. For more information and to register, visit https://eggstrahunt.splash that.com/. Information about this

event is also available by emailing allison@nowican.org.

Based in Orem, Utah, Now I Can focuses on the intensive model of physical therapy, which is used to treat children with cerebral palsy and other neuromuscular disorders. Therapists use various interventions and extended therapy times - usually four hours per day, five days

Adult Sports League takes off

“We are always adding programs and creating opportunities,” said Risa Paskoff, executive director of Aaron’s Acres. During the winter, the organization added the Aaron’s Acres Adult Sports League to its offerings for adults with disabilities. The league joined existing sports programs such as the Chuckie Magee Flag Football League, which began in the fall of 2022. Paskoff pointed out that Challenger Little League of Lancaster County is available in the spring. Challenger has given individuals with special needs a chance to play baseball each year for nearly three decades.

After the flag football program attracted 20 members who participated in regular games at the Manheim Brethren in Christ Church on Saturdays from August through early November, Aaron’s Acres organizers wanted to offer a winter program, dubbed Aaron’s Acres Adult Sports League. “We started it at the beginning of February,” said Paskoff, who noted the program has been held each Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon at the Lancaster Brethren in Christ Church on Fruitville Pike, with the last installment set for March 18. “We opened it to adults ages 21 to 40 as with the flag football,” explained Paskoff. “We didn’t know if they would like kickball or soccer or floor hockey, so we did two weeks of each.” The rotation began with kickball, which some of the participants had never played before. Next, the program featured soccer and is finishing with floor hockey. Halfway through each session, the group took a break for a snack. More than 20 participants and four volunteers took part. “They loved kickball. It was so much fun,” said Paskoff, who noted that in the future, she hopes to have more volunteers at the sessions.

Because of the short duration and number of volunteers, parents of participants are required to remain at the venue. “It gives the parents time to mingle and (network),” said Paskoff, who noted one participant’s mother had moved to the state only recently and was able to learn about resources from other parents. The participant was happy to take part in the activity. “He’s very social, and he was so excited to be with other people,” said Paskoff.

Because of the success of the flag football league and the winter sports programming, Paskoff said, Aaron’s Acres plans to hold the programs again. “It’s just continuing the mission of providing meaningful programs to people with disabilities and

New Holland, and Paskoff said the organization plans to hold camp in the New Holland Community Memorial Park again in 2023. Paskoff noted the organization continues to look for an existing building to renovate to meet its needs.
