Manheim Central Lunch Crew Supports Kraybill Program By Diane Bitting

Around noon on a recent Tuesday, seventh- and eighth-graders at Kraybill Mennonite School walked into the multipurpose room at the school, stopping at a long table to pick up a hot lunch. Standing behind the table were members of the “lunch crew” from Manheim Central High School. Clad in aprons, hats and food service gloves, they spooned up pasta, mixed vegetables and watermelon onto the students’ plates. On this day, the lunch and cleanup crew consisted of five special-needs students in Manheim Central’s life skills support class who are learning the realworld skills needed in food service work. Led by teacher Gail Troutman and accompanied by aides and an occupational therapist, this class, with a total of eight students, visits Kraybill on Mondays and Tuesdays.

On Wednesdays or Thursdays, students in Manheim Central’s Intro to School to Work class, led by teacher Kim Hatfield, serve lunch at Kraybill. Kraybill parents volunteer for lunch duty on the remaining two days. A food vendor delivers the food to the school, which does not have a cafeteria. After students are handed their lunch plates, they return to their classrooms to eat. The cooperative project between Manheim Central’s special education program and Kraybill, a private Christian school in Mount Joy, began last fall, when Kraybill began serving hot lunches to its 120 students in prekindergarten through eighth grade. Both Troutman and Kraybill’s principal, M.J. Smith, described the public-private partnership as a “win-win” situation that benefits both the special-needs and Kraybill students. See Lunch Crew pg 7

A Showcase Of Utilitarian Art Redware Display Opens At Landis Valley Museum By Ann Mead Ash

After King Charles II granted him a charter for land in 1681, William Penn invited people with specific skills to come to live and work in the area, which he had named Pennsylvania. “When William Penn held a call for laborers to come over, potters were on his list,” explained Jennifer Royer, Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum curator. Into the late 1800s, much pottery was redware, earthenware vessels and dishes made from clay with a high iron content that turned the pottery red when pieces See Redware Exhibit pg 9

Jennifer Royer, Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum curator, has organized the exhibit titled “Thrown, Fired, and Glazed: The Redware Traditions From Pennsylvania and Beyond.” The first part of the exhibit will be on display at the museum through the end of the year. Part two of the exhibit will open in March of 2020.

Student Raises Funds For K-9 Officer A third-grade student at Doe Run Elementary recently completed a passion project for his third-grade LEAP class, raising $568 to support Casper, the K-9 officer for Manheim Borough. Nathan Bowerman first became interested in raising money for Casper after seeing a Facebook video made with Casper and his handler, Officer Colwell. The video shared that training and expenses to maintain the K-9 program come solely from donations from organizations and the community. In connection with his project, Nathan met Casper and Colwell, who gave him a two-hour tour of the new police station, including a tutorial and demonstration of the skill set that Casper brings to the police force. Nathan began researching K-9 officers and devised a plan to raise funds through the sale of puppy chow snack mix, a treat for humans consisting of cereal, peanut butter, chocolate, and See K-9 Officer pg 11

Kraybill students. It’s like “welcoming a friend that we see every Monday and Tuesday,” she added. At Christmastime, the Kraybill students made a big thank-you poster for the Manheim students, which hangs in their classroom. As Troutman put it, “It’s now stretched our community to include (people) outside of our own school.”

program as part of the transition the school open despite to becoming independent from decreased enrollment. Other incentives, such as lowthe Lancaster Mennonite School organization. The plan is to keep ering tuition rates and adding Spanish instruction and beforeschool child care, have helped reverse that trend, Smith and Schaefer said. Kraybill will become fully independent on Monday, July 1, which is also the start of the school’s 70th year, Smith pointed out. “It’s been a vital part of the community. It’s the center of life for many people. They just have great memories of being here,” she said. The school never had a hotlunch program before. “We wanted to provide that option,” said Smith. As the possible lunch program was being discussed, Schaefer, who is supervisor of pupil services for the Cornwall-Lebanon School District, suggested that Isaiah Collins, a student in the life skills support class at special-needs students could be of help while also getting some Manheim Central High School, cleans dishes after lunch at much-needed work experience. Kraybill Mennonite School, with the help of paraeducator Local districts were contacted, Amy Dissinger. and Manheim Central was able to sign on. In addition to serving the food, the Manheim Central students count and wrap silverware in napkins based on how many students sign up for a hot lunch on any given day. On a recent Tuesday, student Isaiah Collins busied himself at a chalkboard, recording the count for each class. Student Dustin Martin said he enjoys wrapping up the utensils. Kayla Boyer likes doing the dishes. After finishing their own lunches, Kayla and Isaiah, accompanied by Manheim Central High School students Kayla Boyer (left) and paraeducator Amy Dissinger and Dustin Martin load the dishwasher following lunch at Kraybill personal care assistant Karen Beck, collected bins of dishes and Mennonite School. took them to the kitchen to be cleaned off and loaded into dishwashers, with Dustin joining them for that task. Troutman pointed out that Kayla had the chance to do dishwashing work at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology. “The skills that she’s been learning here are opening her to some other opportunities,” Troutman said. While Troutman’s students may not have the same communication skills as other students, she Students at Kraybill Mennonite School pick up a hot lunch has seen them grow socially served by students from Manheim Central High School’s life through their interaction with the skills support class. According to Smith and Sarah Schaefer, a Kraybill parent and board member, Kraybill’s board decided to begin the hot-lunch

Associated Builders and Contractors - Keystone Chapter (ABC Keystone) was recently awarded a $67,182 PASmart Pre-Apprenticeship Grant through the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry to create the Lancaster-Berks Construction Pre-Apprenticeship Connection (P-A Connection). P-A Connection is a partnership between the Lancaster County Workforce Development Board, Berks Connections/Pretrial Services (BCPS), and ABC Keystone. Through the P-A Connection partnership, PASmart Grant funds will help promote preapprenticeship in the construction trades, provide no-cost education for 20 individuals, and certify additional instructors at partnering organizations. P-A Connection seeks to increase the number of youths, returning citizens, and underemployed individuals in pre-apprenticeship programs in the two-county area and to provide the skilled trade and employability skills necessary to build the workforce pipeline needed to meet the increasing demand in the commercial/industrial construction trades. A portion of the grant funds will provide opportunities to promote the pre-apprenticeship program through open houses and awareness efforts, and funds will also be used to support Berks Connections/Pretrial Services. Berks Connections/ Pretrial Services is an organization focused on improving employment participation of returning citizens through the development of a career pathway in the construction trades and other similar organizations; expanding the number of secondary and postsecondary partnerships; and raising the number of youth pre-apprentices in the construction trades. Increased articulation agreements with area schools, made possible by this grant, will allow additional area youths to more easily access the pre-apprenticeship programs. ABC Keystone will serve as the registered apprenticeship sponsor and is a registered pre-apprenticeship consortium. The Keystone Apprenticeship and Training Trust oversees the ABC Keystone apprenticeship programs in seven member-determined trades. Trades currently offered include carpentry, construction craft laborer, electrical, heavy equipment operator, plumbing, HVAC, and sheet metal. Pre-apprenticeship application details for the 20 students to be served by this grant will be finalized in mid-March. unusual pitchers shaped like heads. Platters were often decorated using one of two techniques. “(Potters) put glaze down on (the item), and then they scratch through it (using a technique) called sgraffito,” said Royer, who explained that the scratches allowed the natural red color to show through. Slip decoration is a technique that creates lines and writing on pieces. Decorations often include birds and flowers. “Redware has similarities to other Pennsylvania German (creations) such as fraktur and blanket chests,” said Royer. “Pennsylvania Germans love colors and designs,” she added. “Just look at their quilts.” Use of redware was not confined to the kitchen and dining room. On display in the exhibit are a chicken waterer, a bee skep, footrests for a stove, and a variety of decorative items, including a piece in the form of a tiny cabin that is really a bank. Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum encompasses 100 acres in Manheim Township. The goal of the nonprofit organization is to collect, preserve, and interpret Pennsylvania German community history from 1740 to 1940. Lancaster County, along with 12 other southeastern Pennsylvania counties, is currently under quarantine for the spotted lanternfly. All residents and businesses must comply with the regulations, and a spotted lanternfly permit is required for any business working within and/or moving goods in and out of the quarantine zone. This includes farm businesses such as nurseries, greenhouses, woodworking shops, and others that sell materials that could contain eggs or young or adult spotted lanternflies. Each affected business needs to have a supervisor, a manager, or the owner complete the required training and take a 20-question exam. Free online training, including the examination, can be found at https://extension.psu.edu/ spotted-lanternfly-permit -training. A series of free training and testing sessions is being offered in Lancaster County for businesses that do not have access to the online training. The dates and locations of these on-site sessions are Thursday, March 21, at 10 a.m. at Daniel’s Farm Store, 324 Glenbrook Road, Leola; Friday, March 29, at 9 a.m. at the Lancaster Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster; Wednesday, April 3, at 9 a.m. at Gideon King Hardware, 466 Elam Road, Kinzer; Wednesday, April 17, at 10 a.m. at Daniel’s Farm

most potters were also farmers. “They would farm, and then, when they had downtime, they would make pottery,” said Royer. “They had all the clay on their land, and redware was cheap to make.” Each town had its own potter throwing pieces on a wheel or making them in molds. “When you knew he was going to open his kiln, you would go to his place and pick from the kiln what you needed,” explained Royer. “You could also tell him ahead of time what you might want so he could make it.” Not all potters stayed put in one town, however. Part of the display includes pieces by Willoughby Smith, a potter who took orders and even sold pottery door-to-door. Smith, who is associated with Berks and Montgomery counties, had a special carrying case filled with his flower pot samples, which fit into the bag like nesting dolls. “Smith would go around (from house to house) and ask what size pot (a customer) wanted and sell them,” said Royer. In addition to the flower pots, the display features cups, jugs, and a food mold similar to a bundt cake pan, along with a photo of Smith with one of his apprentices. Redware items, which are individually made, range from simple utilitarian plates and bowls to

to plan the 2019 exhibit, she realized that redware had not been displayed in the museum for quite some time. “I started to talk to institutions and private collectors,” recalled Royer. “We were finding wonderful pieces, and the collection was getting bigger.” It was too big, in fact, to display all the pieces in one year, hence the two-year, two-part exhibit. Royer noted that one catalog will be published for the two parts. Royer explained that one reason so many potters came to Pennsylvania was in the makeup of the earth. “The clay here is similar to what was found in Europe,” she said, adding that

The Elizabethtown Chapter, Order of DeMolay, is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Order of DeMolay. The monthlong celebration, which will continue through Sunday, March 31, began when Master Councilor Holden Green and members of the chapter attended the the Mount Joy Township supervisors Feb. 18 meeting, and the supervisors approved a proclamation recognizing March as DeMolay Month. At the Feb. 21 meeting of the Elizabethtown Borough Council, Mayor Chuck Mummert read a similar proclamation, and he and the council members congratulated the DeMolay members for their community work. State and federal government officials have also issued proclamations recognizing

Elizabethtown Chapter s observance of March as DeMolay Month. During DeMolay Month, Elizabethtown Chapter will present a Sponsoring Body Recognition Program, a Senior DeMolay program; visit DeMolay chapters in Carlisle, Greensburg, Harrisburg, Reading and York; and hold a Prospect Party at the Carlisle Sports Emporium on Saturday, March 23, for young men interested in joining DeMolay. On March 17, members and advisers were scheduled to attend a church service at the Sell Chapel at the Masonic Village in Elizabethtown in observance of the DeMolay International Devotional Day. The Order of DeMolay is a fraternal organization initially start-

ed in Kansas City, Mo., in 1919 by Frank S. Land, for young men ages 12 to 21. Through its varied activities, the Order of DeMolay teaches the principles of good citizenship, fraternalism, and leadership. The Elizabethtown DeMolay program also includes athletics, public speaking opportunities, community service projects, charitable outreach programs, and social activities. Elizabethtown Chapter currently has a membership of 40 young men from the Elizabethtown area and throughout southcentral Penn-

sylvania. The Elizabethtown Chapter is sponsored by Abraham C. Treichler Lodge No. 682 Free and Accepted Masons, Corinthian Royal Arch Chapter No. 224, and Lancaster Commandery No. 13 Knights Templar. DeMolay activities are supervised by an Advisory Council of volunteer Masons, Senior DeMolays, and other adults. For more information about Elizabethtown DeMolay, readers may contact chapter adviser Jesse Spence at 717-209-0843 or etowndemolay@gmail.com.
