Library will host chicken barbecue
BY CATHY MOLITORISLooking for a quick lunch or dinner idea? Get your tickets for a chicken barbecue to benefit the Manheim Community Library. Tickets are on sale now through Tuesday, April 18. The barbecue will be available by drive-through pickup at the Manheim Farm Show Complex, 502 E. Adele Ave., on Saturday, April 29. “We will have pickup from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and then from 1 to 2 p.m., anyone who didn’t prepurchase chicken can buy leftovers if we have any,” said Jes Wagner, community relations coordinator for the library.
BY CATHY MOLITORIS“Thisshow is about acceptance,” said Landon Hunsicker, describing “Shrek The Musical.” “Shrek is an ogre, and everyone assumes he’s mean, but the show gives him the opportunity to show what’s inside him and help him connect with the other characters.”
“Shrek The Musical” will be perf ormed by Encore! Home School Productions at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 31, and Saturday, April 1, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 2. It will be performed at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim.
“The cast has worked really hard on this show,” noted Landon, who portrays Donkey. “We started rehearsing in November. It’s a really fun show, and it’s different than the movie version of ‘Shrek.’ It adds to that original story.”
“Shrek The Musical” tells the
story of the title character, Shrek, portrayed by Seth Snyder, who becomes an unlikely hero as he takes a journey to rescue the feisty Princess Fiona, played by Emily Norcott as an adult, Grace Richey as a teen and Cambria Brinton as a young child. Full of fairy-tale characters, the show is a family-friendly story of friendship, love, community and uniqueness. As Pinocchio, played by Giselle Bartlett, says in the show, “What makes us special makes us strong.”
The production will feature a cast of 40 students from across the central Pennsylvania region. Students live in the school districts of Hempfield, Elizabethtown Area, Penn Manor, Donegal, Lancaster, Susquenita, Bermudian Springs, Camp Hill, Annville-Cleona, Central Dauphin, Lower Dauphin, Cumberland Valley, West Shore, Derry Township, East Pennsboro, Susquehanna Township and Middletown Area.
“Community is a big theme of this show,” said Callaghan Petrosky, who plays Lord Farquaad. “It’s about being comfortable with who you are and having a place in a bigger community.”
The large cast of actors don elaborate costumes, including fur suits and prosthetics, and for some of the actors, it’s been a unique challenge. “I wear a fur suit and I have hooves on my hands, so I’ve been practicing with them,” Landon stated. For Callaghan, his character is extremely short, requiring him to act on his knees. “I wear a long cape and have knee pads, and then I have fake legs attached to the pads,” he said. Gingy, played by Ella McKell, works with a puppet throughout the show, and Dragon, portrayed by Lily Patota, wears a large headpiece and maneuvers the stage with a giant tail.
Costumes, props, sets, playbills,
advertising, concessions and more are coordinated by families, who contribute their time and talents to the production, said Tammy Bartlett, public relations lead. “It takes a community to produce a show,” she stated.
Encore! Home School Productions is a nonprofit organization that offers performing arts opportunities to homeschool and cyber school students in central Pennsylvania. A Christian organization, it focuses on providing students with a positive, challenging and educational experience, presenting high-quality live theater to the public. “Shrek The Musical” is directed by Dena McKell, with Coleen Steindel as the music director. The show is produced by Ann Snyder.
To purchase tickets for “Shrek The Musical,” visit www.encorehsp.org or call 717-459-3701. Online sales will close three hours before show time. Tickets will be available at the door.
There will be two options for the barbecue, which will be prepared by Manheim-based Peters’ Barbecue. People may purchase a chicken-only ticket or a full dinner. The dinner will include a half-chicken, a baked potato, applesauce, a roll and butter and utensils.
“This is our first time hosting a chicken barbecue,” Wagner remarked, noting that several staff members brainstormed the idea when thinking about fundraisers. “We know of other nonprofits that have done very well with chicken barbecues, so we thought we’d give it a try. We’re excited to see how it goes.”
Proceeds from ticket sales will be used to fund operational costs and programming at the library.
Wagner said anyone looking for a tasty, affordable meal should consider purchasing a ticket.
See Barbecue pg 2
“This is your chance to get Peters’ Barbecue in this area, which I know is very popular,” she stated. “It’s also for a great cause.”
Pickup for the barbecue will be located near the exhibit

They’re off to see the wizard
BY CATHY MOLITORISWhen the classic musical “The Wizard of Oz” comes to the stage at Mount Calvary Christian School, audiences will see a specific theme play out throughout the show as Kansas farm girl Dorothy gets swept away in a tornado to the magical land of Oz. “This show is about home,” said Jessica Shaffer, a senior who plays Dorothy. “It’s about realizing you might not understand at first that home isn’t necessarily a place, but it’s the people you know.”
Mount Calvary will present “The Wizard of Oz” at 7 p.m.
on Thursday, March 23, through Saturday, March 25, with an additional 2 p.m. performance on Saturday. The show will be performed in the gym at the school, 629 N. Holly St., Elizabethtown.
Directed by Kelli Robinson, the musical will feature 37 students in grades six through 12. “The Wizard of Oz” is similar to the movie of the same name, said Daniel Hess, a seventh-grader who portrays the Cowardly Lion. “There are a few extra scenes in the musical, but it’s about Dorothy’s journey through Oz and the friends she finds along the way to help her,” he stated. “She learns that she doesn’t have to look very hard to find an adventure.”
The students have been working on the show since
December, and their hard work is paying off, said Reagan Mertz, a senior who portrays the Scarecrow. “It’s going to be a very exciting show to watch,” he stated. “I’m excited to see it all come together. We have a great cast.” He noted that for his character in particular, the performance requires a bit of physicality. “I’ve been practicing falling a lot,” he said with a laugh. “It’s been fun to sort of flop around in character. It’s controlled chaos.”
Each of the actors has put time and effort into honing his or her character, said Jessica. “To see this cast put their heart and soul into this show has been really great,” she noted. For some of the students, the roles have been especially challenging: Seventh-grader Karly Bozell, for
example, portrays Dorothy’s dog, Toto, using a puppet. “It’s been a strange but fun experience to learn how to use the puppet,” she shared, noting that she has some lines as Toto. “I get to bark a little bit.”
As Dorothy travels through Oz in the musical, she encounters a variety of situations that lead to an entertaining show, said Malachi Shenk, a sophomore who plays the Tin Man. “Audiences can expect fun times and a lot of laughs,” he remarked. “There are comedic parts, but there are tears, too. It’s an emotional roller coaster of a show.”
Tickets for “The Wizard of Oz” may be purchased at https://mcchristianschool .hometownticketing.com /embed/all. Tickets will also be for sale at the door.

Baron teams end respective seasons at states
BY ERIC PYLESLord Alfred Tennyson was surely not thinking about high school basketball when he penned his famous literary line... “Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all,” but the general theme of the statement still applies to the Manheim Central boy’s and girls’ basketball teams. Both squads ventured into PIAA-5A playoff territory following their stellar regular seasons, unfortunately their stints were short lived.
The boys, courtesy of their 22-6 mark and District 3-5A runner-up finish, were able to stay close to home for their battle with Mars, the sixthplace team out of District 7, playing at Manheim Township HS. That proximity to home did not matter as the Fightin’ Planets took control early and finished Central’s season with a 61-49 victory.
That early control led to a 15-10 cushion after the opening frame with the margin extended to 12 points, 33-21, at the break. The Barons were able to hang close to Mars in the third and fourth quarters, playing even-up over the final 16-minutes, but the damage had already been done, leaving Manheim on the wrong side of the 61-49 final.
Trey Grube tallied a team high 18 points, finishing his stellar Manheim Central
career with 1,794 points.
Aaron Enterline chipped in with 14 as the only other Baron in double digits.
Zachary Benner (seven points), Sam Witmer (four points), Collin Neiles (two points), Jackson Tracy (two points) and Chase Book (two points) rounded out the scoring.
The story was the same for the girls except the Lady Barons, after finishing as the fifth seed out of District 3, hopped on a bus for a fourhour ride. That trek took them to Gateway HS in Monroeville, PA where they faced Oakland Catholic, the runnerup out of District 7. Central struggled out of the gate, allowing the Lady Eagles to take control with a 19-9 run through the opening quarter. Things deteriorated in the second with Oakland Catholic ripping through the frame on a 29-11 run, pushing Central’s deficit to 48-20.
Oakland Catholic kept the pressure on through the third quarter, posting a 13-6 edge that extended their lead to 35 at 61-26 heading into the final stanza. Only then did the Lady Eagles let up, which allowed Manheim Central to post a 13-4 advantage, setting the final at 65-39.
Maddie Knier netted a game high 27, pushing her to 2,054 career points, most in Central’s history and the eighth most points in Lan-
caster-Lebanon League history. Payton Snyder added six points while Kaylee Kroll (three points), Abbie Reed (two points) and Laken Zeiset (one point) rounded out the offense.
WRESTLING
The two remaining members, Brett Barbush and Braxton Keiffer, of Manheim’s wrestling team saw their season and high school career come to a close with their participation in the PIAA-3A Championship held March 911 at Hershey’s Giant Center. Barbush competed in the 160-pound bracket, working his way to an eighth-place finish, his 2-3 mark for the tourney putting his season tally at 43-7. Barbush opened his run by pinning Jimmy Spindler of Pittston Area HS just before the final horn. He was no match for West Allegheny’s Shawn Taylor, dropping their quarterfinal tilt by a 21-6 final. Barbush extended his season a bit longer by picking up a win in his first consolation match, topping Connor Wetzel (Shikellamy) by a 5-4 count. That proved to be Barbush’s final victory as a loss to Franklin Regional’s Gavyn Beck put him in the 7th/8th place match opposite Gavin Pascoe of Perkiomen Valley. Pascoe earned the win and seventh place medal that came with it, leaving Barbush as the eighth-place finisher.
Keiffer’s time in Hershey
was significantly shorter. The senior dropped his first two matches, bringing his season to a close with a 34-10 mark. Keiffer had a bye in the preliminary round, setting him
up for a first-round battle with Franklin Regional’s Tyler Kapusta. Keiffer hung close but ultimately fell by a 3-2 final. The tough times continued in the consolation bracket
where a second one-point loss, this one a 1-0 final to West Allegheny’s Caiden Harbert, brought Keiffer’s Manheim Central wrestling career to a close.

Sharing the burden
BY ANN MEAD ASHThere is an old saying that “many hands make light work.” Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC), in partnership with We Rise International and with the help of a grant from LMC Legacy Foundation, would like to lighten the burden of area faith leaders with regard to the mental health of their communities.
Leaders of all faiths in Lancaster, York, Lebanon, and Adams counties are invited to “Guiding Faith Leaders on Mental Health,” a breakfast scheduled to be held on Wednesday, March 29, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Eden Resort, 222 Eden Road, Lancaster. Seating is limited and registration must be made by Wednesday, March 22. There is a nominal fee to attend.
Kim McDevitt, director of MHALC, said that the breakfast was inspired in part when she attended a funeral for a young man who died of an overdose. She noted that when the officiant gave the eulogy he began to cry. “He
said ‘I wish I could have done more,’” recalled McDevitt. Knowing that experts and resources are available, McDevitt said that MHALC hopes to provide training and support. “We don’t want them to have to carry the burden on their own,” she said.
Speakers at the breakfast will include Dr. Jeffrey D. Hamilton, who will discuss “ministering to persons facing mental illness,” and Janelle Bitikofer, executive director of We Rise International, which has a Lancaster location. Bitikofer said that We Rise International has conducted in-depth training for faith leaders to teach strategies to reduce stigma and connect them to support. “(Faith leaders) are really instrumental in responding to the needs of their communities,” she said. “They are the people individuals in the faith community go to when they need help and support.” Noting that faith leaders are on the frontlines, she added, “We come alongside them and help them to be able to meet those needs with additional support, information,
and linking to community resources.”
“This event will be twofold,” pointed out McDevitt, noting that attendees will be asked to identify a champion from within their community who may have background in mental health and can be supportive of a community member in a struggle. “The champions will be invited to a second event on May 25, which will also be held at the Eden,” explained Margie Lamberson, director of development and communications for MHALC.
“It will be a follow-up educational session f or the people who can assist the (faith leaders) as needs arise to lessen the burden.”
“ We will provide training to the champions so they can walk alongside (the faith leaders), who are often tasked with doing that alone without a support system,” said Bitikofer.
McDevitt explained that the champions
will then become contact persons between faith communities and MHALC. According to Lamberson, MHALC can then help the champions navigate the complex mental health system, which they are able to provide without charge thanks to the community, foundations, and others who support the work.
Individuals who would like to attend the breakfast may register at https://tinyurl.com/mrhw9 mwk or call 717-397-7461.

Flight 93 Memorial in Stoystown. In addition, the trip will include teaching on the motorcoach.
The trip will be led by Dayspring teacher and science department chair Randy Gehman, who has studied the creation versus evolution debate for more than 40 years. Gehman has had the opportunity to speak to thousands of people in schools, in churches, and on retreats.
For many years, Dayspring students have had the opportunity to participate in a multi-day field study at the Carnegie Museum, the Creation Museum, and the Ark Encounter. This is a standing
part of Dayspring Christian Academy’s life science curriculum. Extending this opportunity to the community seemed a positive next step for the school. Gehman noted that the trip aims to increase participants’ understanding of science and Scripture.
The trip is designed for people of middle school age and up, although children as young as 6 have attended. Prices per person include all hotels, motorcoach transportation, admissions to the attractions, and breakfasts. For more information or to register for the trip, call 717-285-2000 or visit www.mycreationtrip.com.
Wellness Call program launched
Jeff McMenamin, community and customer support manager at United Disabilities Services (UDS), launched a Wellness Call program, using grants and donations to help provide wellness calls to individuals free of charge for a limited time. Realizing how much the COVID-19 pandemic brought isolation upon the population, especially the aging community and those
with disabilities, the idea for the Wellness Call program was born. With the rapid onset of technology that makes it easier to stay home, the risk of isolation is growing. The calls provide security to individuals who may be isolated and offers peace of mind that someone cares and is actively checking on them.
Check-in calls make sure individuals are comfortable
and completing daily living activities such as taking their medications and eating properly and also assesses the mood for safety in the home. Conversational calls offer a more in-depth conversation about family, hobbies, and current events and provide a sense of connection.
For more information, visit www.udservices.org.
The event will recognize the 2023 SBAL Award winners. This year’s winners are HQ Water Solutions, InJoy Golf, Sisters & Brothers Keepers, SmartPay Rentals Inc., and SWAN: Scaling Walls a Note at a Time.
There is a cost to attend. For tickets and details, visit www.eventbrite.com. Ticket registration will close on Friday, April 14.

Dance showcase to raise funds for Ukraine
The Viktor Yeliohin International Ballet Academy of Lancaster has scheduled a multistudio regional collective showcase of dance called “Relevé,” which is a ballet term meaning “to rise up.” The event will be held on Sunday, April 2, at 4 p.m. in the High Fine Performing Arts Center at Lancaster Mennonite School.
Viktor Yeliohin’s primary vision is to provide the community with beautiful dance performances while raising money for Ukrainian children affected by the war. All proceeds will be donated to Step-In, an organization that donates medical supplies and provides health care for Ukrainian children, and other nonprofits that share the goal to meet the medical needs of children in Ukraine.
The showcase represents a
partnership between local dance studios, whose dancers will collectively perform pieces in ballet, contemporary and modern dance styles. In addition to the Viktor Yeliohin International Ballet Academy, the participating schools include Encore Dance Center, Balance Dance, Adrenaline Dance of York, Movement Laboratory, NetCo Dance, and Emme Dance Collective. The showcase has special meaning to some of the dancers as ballerinas from Ukraine have participated in Yeliohin’s annual production of “The Nutcracker.”
For more information, visit www.vyballet.com or call Yeliohin at 717-419-6688.
