Becoming A Citizen Scientist BY CATHY MOLITORIS

n early April, Laurie McClure will find herself face-to-face with leatherback sea turtles. The Manheim Central High School science teacher was chosen out of hundreds of applicants to participate in an eight-day teacher fellowship in Costa Rica. Organized by the nonprofit Ecology Project International (EPI), the trip partners scientists with local and international students and educators in ecology hotspots around the globe. During her fellowship, McClure will gain skills and resources she

can bring back to the classroom. She’ll be immersed in the rainforests and beaches of Costa Rica, spending her days collecting data and planning hands-on lessons near Pacuare Reserve, a field research station managed by EPI. McClure was originally chosen for the trip in 2020, but COVID put her plans on hold for two years. At the time, she was chosen for EPI’s program in Yellowstone National Park, but when the programs resumed, she was given her choice of destinations. She picked Costa Rica because she’d never been there and because it offered the opportunity

to experience so many new things. “I love to travel to as many places as possible, and I’ve been to every continent except for Antarctica,” she said. “I’ve been to every biome except for the tropical rainforest, so that’s what is really exciting about this trip.” A teacher for 18 years, McClure has taught at Manheim Central for 16 years and currently teaches biology, climatology and Advanced Placement environmental science. She’s excited to bring back what she learns on the trip to her classroom. Along with identifying sea turtle nesting sites, McClure will participate in population counts of primates in the rainforest. Her students will also be doing parallel lessons during her trip. “I’m really looking forward to being immersed in what actual researchers are doing,” she said. “You can read all you want or visit museums, but there’s nothing like getting the chance to do the work directly. The opportunity to be a citizen scientist is exciting.” McClure said one of her favorite travel experiences was a 2018 visit to Africa, where she climbed part of Mount Kilimanjaro and took a selfie with a wild elephant. She has previously participated in population studies of both Delaware Bay horseshoe crabs and Isle Royale wolves and moose. “I teach through my trips,” she stated. “My trips are an opportunity for my students to have a real experience they can attach to their classroom learning.” When she returns from her trip to Costa Rica, McClure plans to incorporate what she’s learned into lessons at Manheim Central. She hopes to inspire her students to take action whether it’s in another country or right here in Lancaster County. “There are things we can do right here in our backyard,” she stated. “I want to share my passion about nature and the environment with my students. I love seeing those ‘aha’ moments when they really connect to something.”

This is the first time the library is holding this event, said Alissa Booth, community relations coordinator. “We were looking for a way to celebrate local authors and businesses and our love for children’s books while raising funds for the library,” she said. “With National Picture Book Day and International Children’s Book Day on April 2 and National Library Week beginning on April 3, it seemed a natural fit.” Festivities at the celebration will include story times and meet-andgreets with local children’s book authors, along with lots of handson activities. “Come out and meet local teen and children’s book authors and maybe discover your next favorite book,” Booth stated. “Kids can get artsy with one of our free crafts or welcome spring by planting a mini garden.” Children can learn how to draw the owl and the dog from “What if Night?” with illustrator Sarah Holden providing

Castellino, deputy attorney general of Eastern Pennsylvania; and Jessica Williams, Pennsylvania state trooper and Human Trafficking Task Force coordinator for Eastern Pennsylvania. The panelists will present a discussion from 6:30 to 8 p.m., with opportunities for questions beforehand and afterward. Other agencies that will be represented at Welcome to the Battle include FREE (Freedom and Restoration for Everyone Enslaved), ZOE International, Greenlight Operation, She’s Somebody’s Daughter and TFC Global. Corrado said inviting panelists from outside Lancaster County, including Castellino and Williams, is a deliberate move on NSI’s part to underscore the pervasiveness of human trafficking. “(We want) to further help the audience understand the work that is being done to combat the vicious crime of trafficking in Pennsylvania, not just in Lancaster and surrounding counties,” she stated. “(We want) to also highlight what the community can do to keep their families safe and how the community should report to the task force when they see anything suspicious or come across a potential victim.” For more information on Welcome to the Battle or to purchase tickets, visit https://northstarinitiative.org /welcome-to-the-battle

The theme of this year’s event is “Faith. Courage. Liberty.” “It starts with faith (because) in today’s world, Christians are being put in a position where they will choose to be courageous or not,” said Stone. We are calling people to choose courage, and liberty will be the result.” Becker agreed, noting that the theme reflects the study of the country’s foundation, which is at the heart of Remember America. “ We are reminding people (that) the founding documents of our nation and the writings of our founders … (had) a biblical world view,” said Becker. She also noted that the faith of the founders was applied to the building of the nation. “When you look at some of our founders and what they have written, you understand these were men of faith who were willing to stand and sacrifice,” she said. “Their faith inspired their

“The mission (of Remember America) is to remind Americans of their unique heritage of liberty that was founded upon biblical principles,” said Dayspring Christian Academy events manager Lisa Becker. “Our hearts first need to be turned to the Lord, and that personal revival extends from us to our family to our community to our state to our nation.” The 2022 Remember America Speaker Series will feature Turning Point USA president and founder Charlie Kirk as the keynote speaker. This year’s presentation, which will include chorale performances and an orator, will be held at the Lancaster County Convention Center, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster, on Saturday, April 23. Kirk, an activist and radio show host, founded Turning Point USA with Bill Montgomery in 2012, and he currently serves as CEO of Turning Point Action and Turning Point Faith. Turning Point USA is a nonprofit organization with chapters promoting conservative values on high school, college, and university campuses. Dayspring headmaster Dan Stone said that organizers have been hoping to have Kirk participate in Remember America. “As I was praying through our short list (of speakers) … I felt education is prominent in people’s thinking right now,” said Stone. “It’s a great time to highlight how education is such an

Brock, we had an extra level of compassion,” explained Bonnie. “It was actually Dave’s idea to do (hold a) concert. He wanted to give people with big hearts a fun way to show love and support to Brock and Lexi.” A benefit concert for the Hallers, billed as “A Night Filled With Worship and Rock Hits,” will be held at Lancaster Evangelical Free Church (LEFC), 419 Pierson Road, Lititz, on Saturday, April 2, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Live music will be provided by local garage band Audio AlgoRhythm, and light snacks will be served. It is free to attend the concert, but registration is necessary. Those wishing to attend are asked to text 717381-8655 to let organizers know. There will be opportunities to donate to a fund for the Hallers at the event. Bonnie explained that Brock’s tumor is a rare and aggressive type called craniopharyngioma. Brock was diagnosed after experiencing symptoms that mimicked depression. A specialist ordered an MRI, and the tumor was found near Brock’s pituitary gland, which affected his hormones. Because the tumor could not be drained, removal of most of the pituitary gland was necessary. Side effects of the tumor include short-term memory loss, diabetes insipidus, and disorientation. “(Brock) is unable to retain any new memory for longer than eight minutes,” Bonnie reported. “He is unable to work, drive, or help care for their three small children.” Because Brock’s case was labeled a medical mystery, a surgeon at Penn State Hershey Medical Center, where the operation was performed, recommended undergoing experimental treatment in California in early March. When Dave suggested the benefit concert for the Hallers, whom the Pennypackers have never met, the Pennypacker family was all in. In addition to funds for medical expenses, Bonnie and Dave want to offer the Hallers hope. “Lexi and I are both caregivers for our husbands,” said Bonnie. “She is in the middle of raising their young children, and I remember what (that) was like. It’s a handful.” Bonnie went on to explain that her family has built a successful and happy life in spite of the challenges. “We have found God to be faithful and to supply our needs,” she said. “Even though we recognize that right now it is unbelievably difficult and overwhelming (for the Hallers), we want to help them get to the other side of that,” Bonnie said.

When 28-year-old Brock Haller of Lititz, husband of Lexi and father of three young children, was diagnosed with a brain tumor in the fall of 2021, the outlook was uncertain. Following a delicate and complicated surgery two weeks after his diagnosis, Brock was left with a number of life-threatening side effects.

Bonnie Martin is Lexi’s aunt, but more than that, she and her husband, Dave, fully understand life-altering medical challenges. “My husband is a quadriplegic,” said Bonnie, explaining that Dave was injured in an auto accident in 1985 that damaged his spinal cord. At the age of 22, he became paralyzed from the shoulders down. “When this happened to
