Growing up, Randy Caldwell watched his father, Lloyd, go out of his way to help others. Inspired by his dad, Caldwell started an organization to give back to the community. Now, the Penryn man is the one who needs help. Caldwell created Lloyd’s Rides in 2016. The nonprofit organization gives rides on motorcycles, or in hot rods or other specialty vehicles to mentally challenged people and wounded warriors. Although the organization has been his focus for the past five years, Caldwell is

After receiving the dinner, participants will exit down the church’s driveway, where various scenes depicting the final week of Jesus’ life will be displayed. “This ‘Drive to Calvary’ is an adaptation of the ‘Walk to Calvary’ we held in the church in years past,” Gray explained. Holding the event is a way for the church to give back to the community and to promote the message of Easter, she said. “During these difficult times of the pandemic, we want to reach out into the community and share the love of Jesus,” she remarked. “Easter is the most important holiday for Christians, so it is a great time to hold an event like this to feed both the body and soul.”

I want to find somebody who will take care of this organization because it’s becoming too much for me.” Caldwell, 72, said Lloyd’s Rides offers a sense of freedom and joy to participants and also lets them know they are not alone. “Lloyd’s Rides helps to build camaraderie and lets people know we care for them,” he explained. “I want to help.” Caldwell knows firsthand how it feels to ride, and he wants to pass that feeling on to others. “My dad used to take me for rides on his Harley when I was very little,” he recalled. “I’ve been riding motorcycles since I was 2 years old.”

I have a banner and a tent to put up at motorcycle rallies,” he said, noting that he recruits for his organization at events. “I have been going to local motorcycle breakfasts, and I’ll help the person who takes over to keep everything going.” Along with helping mentally challenged people and veterans, Caldwell’s organization is also focused on first responders. “A lot of first responders are veterans,” he stated. “I want to help the ones who are suffering and who are at risk for suicide.” Caldwell has a mission to combat post-traumatic stress disorder, he noted, and Lloyd’s Rides has expanded its services to offer computers for veterans who have this condition. Mary Caldwell, Randy’s wife of almost 50 years, noted that her husband has had a passion to give back since his youth, when medical problems prevented him from serving his country. “He didn’t qualify for military service, and because of that, he’s always had a desire to help people who have served and who are suffering because of their service,” she explained. “Charity has always been important to him.” For more information on

“Abstract Spectrum” Will Focus On Student’s Art “There are a lot of children who we call ‘special needs,’ and I believe if we turn that around and begin to call that ‘special abilities,’ we can change the way we view people,” said Carol Roach. “I feel like we’re missing so many opportunities to tap into a special ability rather than a special need.” Carol knows what she’s talking about. Her son, Joseph, has autism. He also has a talent for art, and that talent will be on display Artist Joseph Roach will display his work at Mulberry throughout the month of Art Studios in Lancaster during the month of April. April at Mulberry Art Studios, Sales from his artwork will benefit Aaron’s Acres. 21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster. His show, “Abstract Spectrum,” will kick off with a reception on Friday, April 2, from 5 to 9 p.m. Joe, a student in the Manheim Central School District, will be selling his artwork at the studio to raise funds for Aaron’s Acres, a nonprofit organization that provides year-round recreational programs to children and young adults with disabilities in central Pennsylvania. Joe’s art is focused on intricate, detailed pen drawings and paintings. Now 17, he began creating art in middle school. “Joe is on the spectrum and he has ADHD, and he didn’t show much interest really in anything,” Carol recalled. Then his middle school art teacher, Julie Hibshman, encouraged him to express Introducing Oticon MoreTM himself on paper. a life-changing hearing device with Soon Joe was bringing TM home his art, and his parents BrainHearing technology. were impressed. “I called different art stuScience shows that we hear dios, and I connected with with our brains and not our Mulberry Art Studios,” Carol ears. He has branded his work as JJ Roach Art and has booked another show in Harrisburg. Although Joe has never participated with Aaron’s

Acres, Carol thought of the organization as a beneficiary of Joe’s show because it’s local and because she wanted to give back. Risa C. Paskoff, executive director of Aaron’s Acres, said the fundraiser will help support the nonprofit, which accepts all participants regardless of their financial ability. “We provide ... scholarships to families who face financial challenges,” Paskoff stated.

The Atlantic League announced recently that it will open its 23rd official championship season on Friday, May 28. League officials will work with team executives on additional details of the 2021 season, including COVID-19related safety protocols. The league is finalizing the admission of new teams, conducting player signings, and working with its Major League Baseball partners on test initiatives for the 2021 campaign. Mindful of government safety concerns, especially ballpark attendance allowances, the league felt it was critical to announce its intention to play a full season this year. Easter Weekend Services Posted Hosanna! A Fellowship of Christians, 29 Green Acre Road, Lititz, will host three services on Easter weekend to celebrate life and hope in Christ. The services are open to people of any faith or no faith. Hosanna is known for its creative integration of contemplative spiritual practices and contemporary worship. Instead of a traditional Good Friday service, the congregation will offer community members opportuni-

ties to meditate, lament, pray, or give thanks at a series of prayer stations in its auditorium. Visitors may stop by anytime from noon to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 2. Activities on Easter Sunday, April 4, will begin with a short sunrise service that will include dramatic monologues, Scripture, and worship. Weather permitting, the service will be held outdoors, with a start time of 6:30 a.m.

Easter Sunday worship will continue with a storytelling worship service at 9:30 a.m. A special children’s lesson will be offered at the same time. This service will be available via livestream and later via recorded video for those unable to attend. For more information, visit www.hosannalititz.org. All COVID protocols will be followed in each gathering. To learn more, contact info@hosannalititz.org.

business should have a SCORE mentor.” With how important websites are, Grim advocated spending time, if not money, to develop one. Domain names can be purchased relatively inexpensively from Google, and free or low-cost site builders like Wix, Weebly, and Webs are available. Grim recommends using SquareSpace, which has a strong search engine optimization (SEO) framework that helps websites become visible in searches. Before starting, however, business owners should plan a good messaging strategy by identifying their target audience and how the business’ service or product can solve customers’ problems, and they should create a mood board, which will lead to the creation of a style guide. Grim recommended visiting www.mystorybrand.com to help with that process. Once the site is live on the web, the next thing is to update it on a regular basis through blog posts, video content, and voice recordings. These can be uncomfortable at first, Grim noted. “For most businesses, in order to grow, (owners) need to step out a bit,” Grim shared. “For a while, I didn’t like being on camera, so I didn’t do anything, but then I discovered podcasts. I got comfortable See Tips pg 11

During the pandemic and the subsequent changes to shopping, dining, and business practices, websites have been indispensable. “More and more during COVID, (the internet) becomes the place where transactions happen. (People are) placing orders and buying products (online),” explained marketing expert Adam Grim. “ Websites are the first impression for the business.

In most cases these days, people are looking at your website before they’re willing to have a call with you or stop by your location.” Grim has worked in digital marketing in Lancaster County for nearly a decade. VisionCorps’ Virtual Format Provides Education And Community BY ANN MEAD ASH

When COVID-19 restrictions shut down the state in March of 2020, VisionCorps, a nonprofit organization working to empower the blind and vision impaired, stopped providing services, but not for long. “We shut down services for a couple weeks, but we quickly realized our services were still needed out in the community,” said Chris Ament, vice president of

rehabilitation and education with VisionCorps. To stay within the restrictions, Ament explained that VisionCorps developed a hybrid approach to service delivery. The hybrid programming is part virtual and part in-person. “You can’t safely teach someone how to cross the street over the computer,” noted Ament, who added that the organization was careful to protect all involved. “Our goal is to address safety with employees and the clients we

serve,” he said. “For instance, a lot of our intakes are done either over the computer or the phone, but when someone needs direct attention, whether it’s our occupational therapy or mobility program, (it’s completed in person) with safety precautions taken.” Virtual programming in a variety of formats has been utilized by VisionCorps staff as well as associated groups that receive services. “ We have a lot of small groups

meeting virtually,” said Ament, referring to the nearly 20 groups that discuss topics from mobility to books to service dogs. “We serve five counties, and each one has a support group and topics to discuss,” shared Ament. VisionCorps covers Lancaster, Chester, York, Adams, and Lebanon counties. VisionCorps vice president and chief development officer Megan Tomsheck said that one woman who receives services shared how the vir-

tual connection has changed her life. “(She) said that the (situation) has improved her life because it is hard for her to get out of her home, but now she can participate virtually,” recalled Tomsheck. Ament noted that, overall, the changes have benefited clients and the organization. “The reality is that our service delivery model will be much stronger because we can do these things virtually,” he said, adding that virtual

connections use time more efficiently. “We have a very creative team, and I think the opportunities are endless,” Ament said. In addition to offering virtual services to clients, Tomsheck said that presentations can be made to outside groups. “Part of our marketing, awareness, and public education is that we do theme presentations to service clubs, churches, or any See VisionCorps pg 13
