Making A Difference Through Reading And More By Sara D. Ulrich
“Barons are difference makers.” That phrase, the motto of Manheim Central School District, is more than just a catchy slogan for students at Doe Run and H.C. Burgard elementary schools. To prove they are difference makers, kindergartners through fourth-graders at both elementary schools took part in a reading challenge that culminated with fundraiser parties that benefited local organizations and continued the celebration of reading. As part of the challenge, participants at both elementary schools aimed to read in 15-minute increments, or “steps,” and the class with the highest number of steps received special honors during the parties, dubbed the Family Reading Night and Read-a-THON Celebration, held on March 14 at the respective schools. The Read-a-THON coincided with the
middle and high school Mini-THON events as a way for younger grades to get in on the excitement of Mini-THON, which raises funds for Four Diamonds. Monetary donations were collected for Four Diamonds during the Read-aTHON. Youngsters at both Doe Run and H.C. Burgard held a reading spirit week leading up to the Read-a-THON. During the week, students were invited to participate in dress-up days such as Hats Off to Reading Day, when students could wear a hat all day; Curl Up With a Book Pajama Day; and Read My Shirt Day, where students wore shirts with writing that classmates could read. According to Doe Run principal Art Paynter, the schools pulled out all the stops to promote reading during the culminating parties on March 14. “This is a way for us to celebrate the students and their efforts to be enthusiastic readers,” Paynter explained. Brubaker explained that the Nigeria Crisis Fund started in 2014 in response to terrorist attacks in northeastern Nigeria by Boko Haram, now part of ISIS. The fund brings relief to people affected by the violence by providing food, water, agricultural tools and seeds for planting, as well as education and teaching services. The Haiti Medical Clinic Program was started about a year and a half after the earthquake of 2010. A COB doctor from Kansas visited Haiti with a work camp, saw the devastation and lack of medical care and decided to start a mobile clinic. The clinic, which is supported by COB members, visits about 12 different villages four times a year to provide health care and prenatal care. The program has also started building clean water systems in villages where water is in low supply or contaminated. Brubaker said that Chiques COB has been involved with the two charitable programs since they started. “(Church member) Carolyn Fitzkee organized three trips to Haiti over the last several years with members that are medically trained, working with the medical clinics,” she
said. “The groups (also) helped with building projects, working with children and encouraging our Haitian brothers and sisters. There were about 15 to 20 people involved in each trip.” Brubaker, a nurse, has taken part in four trips to Haiti with her husband, Paul, a medical doctor. “These experiences have changed our outlook on Third World countries and the severe poverty and injustice,” she stated. The church collects regularly scheduled offerings for Haiti and Nigeria, and this is the fifth year for the pork roast dinner to benefit these programs. “Initially, the goal was modest, as we had no idea what kind

“(The Race Against Racism) is another way to forward the mission of empowering women and eliminating racism,” explained Bob Hebert, Lancaster YWCA director of communications and community engagement. “It’s a fundraiser for us, and it supports our social justice programming. Specifically, we host a social justice institute four times per year.” This year’s Race Against Racism, which Hebert noted is the longest-running consecutive race against racism in the country, will be held rain or shine on Saturday, April 27. The certified 5K course will begin in Musser Park, located at East Chestnut and North Lime streets in Lancaster, at 9 a.m. Following the run, Hebert said about 70 to 80 children typically take part in a Kids’ Fun Run, which spans Musser Park. The Fun Run will be held at about 10:30 a.m., when the run is completed and the course has been cleared. The Fun Run is open to children through age 12 for a nominal fee. The 12th annual Humanity Fest, a multicultural festival, will be held in Musser Park in conjunction with the race. Humanity Fest, which will be open from 7 to 11:30 a.m., is designed to celebrate the diversity of the local community. The event will feature food, face painting, and handmade crafts. “Community organizations will have displays,” said Hebert. “The YWCA will have a table, and our sexual assault prevention and counseling center will have a table set up.” The honorary chair of the 2019 race will be Norman Bristol Colon, who has been appointed by Gov. Tom Wolf to serve as executive director of the Governor’s 2020 Census Complete Count Commission. Colon was the first Latino/Hispanic assistant director of admissions at Millersville University (MU), where he was responsible to implement MU’s first strategy for recruitment of Latino students. The model was later used by the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. Colon was a founder and first national chair of the United States Council on Latino Affairs, an organization formed to advance the status of more than 55 million Latinos living in the U.S. According to Hebert, funds raised by the race will help cover the costs associated with Racial Justice Institute - Parts One and Two, which the organization presents several times per year. “(Each part) is a three-day course that discusses systemic oppression and racism that goes on in the country and how to combat it,” explained
Hebert. “(The institute) brings diverse people into the same room (to) learn about what racism is and (how to) respect each other’s backgrounds.” Part one of the institute is open to the public; to take part two, a participant needs to have taken part one or have other social justice training. Hebert researched the history of Lancaster’s Race Against Racism, which will be run for the 21st time this year. “From what I could find, it started in 1999, and it has been growing ever since,” said Hebert. “It was an initiative from the national YWCA.” Hebert explained that several other Races Against Racism will be held at the same time as the Lancaster race, including one in York and one in Harrisburg. The 5K course follows a route through Lancaster city. “(The course) goes down Chestnut and then by McCaskey (High School) and loops around back on Chestnut,” said Hebert, who warned runners to be wary of potholes. The course is lightly rolling with some incline toward the end and is considered good for beginners. Walkers are welcome. More information about the race may be found at https://ywcalancaster.org/ raceagainstracism. Runners and walkers who register prior to Monday, April 8, will be guaranteed a T-shirt and pay a discounted fee. Water bottles will be given to registered runners while supplies last. Readers who wish to register online may do so by visiting the previously mentioned website. Registration on the day of the event will begin at 7 a.m. Teams are welcome to register online. Pictured on front: Humanity Fest, which will feature face painting, food, and displays by local nonprofit organizations, will be held alongside the 2019 Race Against Racism, sponsored by the Lancaster YWCA, on April 27. Fresh floral arrangements displayed on the banquet tables will be up for bids, as well. Pam will present “Celebrating Life: A Mother’s Story,” telling her story of choosing life for her son, Tim. She will encourage attendees to value the lives of persons with whom they cross paths. While in college, Pam discovered the joy of investing herself in the lives of others. She now speaks at women’s events, nonprofit group gatherings, and other events, and she has been featured on television shows and has won national awards. She is currently writing a book. Pam has been married to Bob for more than 40 years, and they have five children and eight grandchildren. Bob and Pam have become known as “homeschool pioneers,” as they educated all of their children at home, starting the endeavor in 1982. The Master Gardener organizers of the 27th annual Shirley R. Wagner Garden Symposium have once again planned an event to appeal to anyone with an interest in gardening. Speakers during the event will talk about trends in gardening, weeds, woodland wildflowers, native bees, and plants for pollinators. An update on the spotted lanternfly infestation will also be offered. “For a gardener, this is the place to be,” said symposium co-chair Brenda Walker. Fellow co-chair Holly List added, “It’s a wonderful place to talk with other gardeners.” The symposium will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. When the doors open at 7:45 a.m., a continental breakfast will be available, and attendees may shop the Gardeners’ Marketplace. Vendors will include sellers of stoneware and porcelain pottery, pollinator-attracting native plants, home and garden décor, small-batch bath and body projects, succulents, herbs, perennials, and preplanned gardens. Walker explained that preplanned gardens are approximately six to eight complementary plants sold as a group. In addition to the businesses selling items, the Master Gardeners of Lancaster County will host the Garden Shed, offering gently used gardening materials as a preview of the group’s annual plant sale, which will be held on Saturday, May 4, this year. “These are true gardeners’ treasures,” Walker remarked. The newest class of Master Gardeners will display projects outlining the results of current research, including information on rain gardens, pollinators, vegetables, and more. All of the Master Gardeners were given an opportunity to include tidbits about their own gardens in the event booklet, a copy of which every attendee will receive along with seeds, information, and other resources. Symposium attendees may visit the vendors during the breaks between
sessions. Jourdan Cole of the Garden Media Group will kick things off by reviewing eight recent garden trends that encourage a love of nature. “People have been saying they’re looking forward to this (session),” List said. Recently retired horticulture extension educator and Master Gardener Annette MaCoy will talk all about weeds and how to control them. List praised MaCoy’s knowledge base and noted that she has trained many of the Master Gardeners in Lancaster County. Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve executive director Miles Arnott will discuss the life cycles of early spring plants

and their ecological benefit. “We don’t often use them (in planned gardens) because they’re not around very long, but they add a taste of spring when we’re yearning for it,” List said. Kelly Gill is a pollinator conservation specialist for the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation and a partner biologist with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions. She will talk about native bees and their habitat needs, a topic that she frequently discusses during her role helping farmers, landowners, and others implement Farm Bill practices to conserve pollinators and other beneficial insects. In a second session, Gill will talk about designing and managing pollinator-friendly landscapes.

By Ann Mead Ash
Tracy Wagner, Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) drama director, chose the musical “Big Fish” for the school’s spring production because she loves the story, which is based on the Daniel Wallace novel of the same name, but she also chose it for the message it holds. “I want (audience members) to hold tight to their family relationships,” she said. “If there’s anything that’s broken or strained, (I hope they) try to heal that (because) we don’t know when our last moment will be.”
“Big Fish,” a tale of extraordinary proportions, will be staged at LCHS, 650 Juliette Ave., Lancaster, at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday through Saturday, March 28 through 30, as well as at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 31. Wagner noted that students will sell daffodils during performance breaks to help raise funds for the American Cancer Society. “During the show, there is one moment when (audience members will have a chance to) hold up the daffodils they purchased and be a part of the show,” explained Wagner. The play focuses on Will Bloom, played

by Kameron Garcia, who is struggling with his relationship with his father, Edward, a former traveling salesman, played by Tony Dominguez. As Will prepares to become a father, he reflects on his own childhood and the extravagant stories his father told him that included mermaids and other fantastic elements. As an adult, Will feels the tales told by his often-absent father were simply myths. He has even stopped believing the story of how his father proposed to his mother, Sandra, played by Claire Wolfe, in a field of daffodils. But, as Edward begins to lose his battle with cancer, Will decides to visit, and with encouragement from his wife, Josephine, played by Aria Yang, Will sets off to learn the truth. “Will’s wife, Josephine, (tells him), ‘If you understand the stories, you will understand the man,’” said Wagner, who added that the audience will see the stories come to life before their eyes in a tale that employs both comedy and drama. The musical will have the 35-member cast singing and dancing in styles that range from classic Broadway to country and folk for the story, which is set in Alabama and requires some characters to put on Southern accents. “The score is beautiful,” said Wagner. “There are ballads that bring the emotions of the characters out.” Wagner cited “The River Between Us,” which is sung by Edward and Will about their broken relationship, and “I Don’t Need a Roof,” which is sung by Sandra to Edward.
As Sandra, Wolfe will age from age 18 into middle age. “I like playing the young version of Sandra. She is very bubbly and friendly,” noted Wolfe, who added that the more mature Sandra is a woman of extreme calm. “It’s a 180-degree switch,” Wolfe said. As Edward, Dominguez is looking forward to playing the character he called “super explosive.” “(Edward is) really imaginative,” said Dominguez. “It can be hard to embody his character. He’s got a lot of grit, but he knows how to (have fun).” Dominguez likes how the character uses his stories and personality to influence and inspire others. “I really enjoy (the song) ‘Fight the Dragons,’” said Dominguez, who added that Edward sings this song to Will. “(In the song, Edward) is saying he will fight the dragons and win the battles, and he hopes that one day his son will fight the dragons with him and carry on to fight them himself,” explained Dominguez. “That song really touches my heart because I lost my father at the age of 6, and this entire musical has helped me connect with (who he was) better.” To help prepare the actors, Wagner scheduled a master class with Broadway performer Ciara Renée for March 16.
