The Manheim/Manheim Central Hall of Fame Board has announced that it has opted to put the annual induction banquet on hold for a year while seeking additional nominations. The board currently has nominations for some very deserving individuals, but it would like to build on those already on file to ensure a quality class of honorees for each year to come. The Hall of Fame has held its induction ceremony for the past 17 years, with the first banquet in 2002. In that inaugural year, 14 individuals were inducted. Since then, another 106 honorees have been added to the Hall of Fame. The mission of the Manheim/Manheim Central Hall of Fame is to honor and perpetuate the accomplishments of those individuals who have brought recognition, See Nominations pg 3

On Thursday, April 18, at 6 p.m., “A Gift of Music in Dementia Care” will focus on the positive influence music can bring and how to use new understandings of music and its effects on people’s brains to improve a person’s quality of life. “Communication and Dementia: Understanding and Being Understood” will be offered on Tuesday, April 23, at 6 p.m. As dementia or Alzheimer’s disease progresses, an individual’s ability to understand also changes. Specific skills and techniques for better communication, both verbal and nonverbal, will be shared. On Thursday, April 25, at 6 p.m., “Decoding the Challenging Behaviors of Dementia” will be offered. Attendees will learn about ways to respond to and effectively deal with negative behaviors, such as aggressiveness and violence, that can stem from the anger, confusion, fear, sadness, and paranoia that a person living with dementia can experience. There is no fee to attend any session of the Navigating the Day series. Preregistration is requested by contacting Karly Sarvis at 717664-6666 or KSarvis@pleasantviewrc.org. Education Conference from pg 1 national program that instructs participants on how to control bleeding in an emergency situation.” All of the sessions are designed to improve the lives of students of all ages and abilities by effectively resourcing educators, professionals, parents, and others who have an interest in education. The theme of the conference is “Together … We Can Do So Much.” Swisher noted that the title is part of a quotation from Helen Keller, who said, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” “When we work together for a common purpose, we can achieve things beyond our greatest imagination. This is especially true in education where we share the common goal of making a positive difference in the lives of students and their families,” said Kathy Rose, early childhood and special education services program director for IU 13. “This year’s conference focuses on collaborating and working as a team to educate all students through innovative approaches to teaching. IU 13 welcomes everyone who believes that each and every day ‘together we can do so much.’” The keynote speaker for the conference will be Jeremy Anderson, who has become an author, businessman, and motivational speaker after recovering from drug and alcohol abuse. Anderson struggled to succeed in school, but he now holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees. During his address, “Diamond in the Rough,” Anderson will reveal how challenges can be used to develop endurance and previously concealed abilities within educators and students. He will also focus on establishing an environment in which student rapport and academic success can be cultivated, using his story to tie in strategies to engage at-risk students. During the morning breakout sessions, Anderson will lead a discussion on building allies in the classroom in order to help troubled students recognize their full potential. The conference will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Registration will open at 7:45 a.m., and a continental breakfast will be available. Attendees may visit sponsors’ tables and enter to win prizes from local businesses. Lunch will be provided and, along with breakfast, is included in the cost of attendance. Act 48 hours will be awarded for the conference. In order to ensure that the conference is accessible to anyone with interest, a special rate has been set for parents, and an early bird discount will be offered to school district and agency personnel who register before Wednesday, May 1. Registrations and payment must be received by Friday, June 7. Folks may register by visiting www.iu13.org. For more information, readers may contact Swisher at 717-606-1878 or linda_swisher@iu13.org.

Barons Top Blazers, Sit on Top of Section Two By Eric G. Stark

The blocking is getting better. The defense is scrappy. And the Barons’ confidence and intensity continue to rise. After four league matches, the Manheim Central boys’ volleyball team is sitting right where it wants to be - in first place in Section Two of the Lancaster-Lebanon League. The Barons took care of business against Lancaster Mennonite, sweeping the Blazers 3-0 Tuesday, April 2. They won 25-19, 25-15 and 25-17. Senior outside hitter Mason Nissley led the way, smashing 18 kills to go along with five blocks and sophomore Jeremiah Zimmerman notched 25 assists to help the Barons take sole possession of first place in the section. Head coach Craig Dietrich is happy with the way his team is playing. “We played pretty well on Tuesday, probably our best team wide performance of the season,” said Dietrich, whose team finished as runner up for the league, district and state championship last year. The team had to replace seven key

contributors from last year’s success. Tanner Stauffer and Ben Burkhart were both two-time All-State selections. Gabe Stewart, Isaac Shenk, Josiah Zimmerman, Ben Lehman and Brad Myer all played key roles. Newcomers - Ben Wolford, Blake Wagner and Quintin Rohrer - have impressed Dietrich. Wolford has done a nice job filling the stat sheet from the middle and Wagner, an outside hitter, has done a nice job controlling the ball, the coach said. Rohrer is playing the sport for the first time, but is a very good athlete, Dietrich said. Darien Colbum, Malki Rivera and Logan Whitehouse are all competing for playing time. Wolford had five digs and several clutch winners at the net against LMH. Colbum added three aces. The Barons started off slow against Elizabethtown on Thursday, April 4, but heated up to make easy work of the Bears, 25-23, 25-15 and 25-17. Wagner had an ace, Nissley posted 21 kills, Jeremiah Zimmerman had two blocks, Wolford added two digs and Colbum dished out two assists. “Against E-town we didn’t start game one with intensity until the end

of the set, narrowly pulling it out 25-23,” said Dietrich, whose team improved to 4-0 this season. “Overall we are heading in the right direction and still improving in our weaker areas.” BASEBALL On Monday, April 1 there was no fooling around, as Manheim earned a 5-2 victory over Northern Lebanon. Nolan Weaver earned the win on the mound, pitching six innings and allowing four hits and two runs. Colton Book, Cole Lastinger, Cam Eberly and Curt Kroesen all collected a hit. Tuesday, April 2 the Barons got the bats swinging in a 10-0 triumph against Donegal. Book went seven innings on the mound, allowing two hits and striking out nine batters. Drew Mummau hit his first home run of the season, a two-run shot. Cody Gibble collected two RBIs. Kroesen had two hits and two RBIs as well. On Thursday, April 4, Manheim lost 2-1 to Octorara, giving the Barons a 5-1 record. Pitcher Hunter Hess scattered five hits, allowing one earned run. Gibble and Book collected the only hits for the Barons. Central left nine men on base. SOFTBALL Manheim has had to replace five senior starters and had to fill those key positions with youth, but you wouldn’t know it. On Monday, April 1 the Barons

traveled north to Northern Lebanon to face a scrappy Section Three foe. Manheim pulled out a 1-0 victory. “They are a good team that play good defense and mix it up at the plate from top to bottom, but our junior pitcher Jordan Walter was able to limit their offense to three hits in seven innings and stranded a runner in scoring position in three different innings to hold them scoreless,” head coach Gary Lefever said. In the fourth inning, Maddie Moyer hit a hard grounder up the middle with a runner on third base to plate the only run of the contest. Walter finished with seven strikeouts and walked one. Manheim had seven hits in the game. In a night game Thursday, March 4, the Barons played section opponent, Octorara and the defense made all the plays they needed in a 10-0 five inning win. Walter, a junior pitcher, held the Braves offense at bay by scattering three hits with seven strike outs and no walks. The Barons offense started early in the contest as Manheim won on a 4 1/2 inning mercy rule highlighted by a three-run homerun for freshman shortstop Emma Damon and a two-run run blast by junior right-fielder Lily Wagner hitting out of the 9 hole. In a rare Saturday, April 6, afternoon game, the Barons suffered a 4-3 loss on a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh inning at Manheim Township.

Central took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Jade Trovinger’s two-run double. It remained 2-0 until the Streaks plated three in the fourth inning. The key was a two out single that plated two runners. The Barons rallied to tie the game in the top of the seventh. Wagner hit a seeing-eye single up the middle with two outs. Gabby Wettig singled to left, putting runners on first and second and allowing Damon to smash a single to center, scoring Wagner. Wettig was thrown out at third on a close play. Township won the game with a twoout blast that hit off the left-field wall.

“We were hot early and I think they (his team) got a little complacent and let up,” said Lefever, whose team has a 5-2 record. “Our lead off hitters were good, but the middle of our lineup, it just wasn’t their day. …Emma had a huge hit.” TENNIS Barons’ coach Ryan Jeckel said Silas Eldeen, a senior, is playing well in the team’s No.1 spot. He has big shoes to fill, replacing Trent Martin, a four-year starter who won the LancasterLebanon League bronze medal last year and competed in districts. “He’s (Eldeen) kinda, in a way, you can’t replace a kid like Trent, but Silas

She also won the pole vault. Laura Good also won four events- 100, 200, triple, long jump. Rivers took the long (21-2.75) and triple jumps (43-9.75). Kade Kegarise threw a 21-2.75 to win the javelin. Christopher Shaw captured the high jump (5-8) and pole vault (10-0).

Tyler Fahnestock took first in the discus, and Barons’ coach Ryan Kennedy said his freshman is making steady improvement. Freshman Justin Heffernan ran a season- best for third in the 400 and a nice split on the 4x400, Kennedy said. The Barons 1,600 relay team of Will Rivers, Tyler Flick, Hefferman and Reed ran a 3:34.4 for first place. Rivers also took care of business in the javelin (149-3), long jump (22-3) and triple jump (45-2.25). The girls battled but suffered an 89-60 loss to Cedar Crest. “Tori Fahnestock ran well in both hurdle races and won the pole vault,” Kennedy said. “Overall, the girls matched Cedar Crest well on the track.” The Falcons won this meet by winning all the field events, except for Fahnestock taking the pole vault. Fahnestock was also part of the 1,600 relay team that posted a time of 4:25.2. Laura Good, Alexis Hosler and Hannah Adair round out the team. Freshman Olivia Sunderland captured the 1600 with a time of 6:00.4. The 3,200 relay team of Halie Mayfield, Courtney Smith, Hosler and Adair captured first with a time of 10:39.7. MERCHANDISER - Manheim Central Edition has picked up where Trent left off and took on the leadership role and is leading by example.” Jeckel also noted Andrew Rajaratnam, is playing good tennis. He put in a lot of time during the off season, and his coach can see some great things down the road for this talented sophomore. The hard work paid off last week. Eldeen and Rajaratnam got the winning started with an 8-3 triumph in doubles to help Manheim cruise past Warwick, 7-0 on Tuesday, April 2. Hunter Winters and Jacob Bidelman also gained an 8-3 win in doubles and Tony Stoltzfus and Darren Bertin paired for an 8-1 victory. The Barons rode this doubles momentum into singles action, where Eldeen and Rajaratnam each rolled easily past the top two seeds for Warwick with 6-1, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-0 wins, respectively. Winters won 6-4, 6-1 and Bidelman didn’t give up a game in a 6-0, 6-0 triumph. Their winning ways continued in a 7-0 white-washing of Exeter on Thursday, April 4. Eldeen cruised again, 6-1, 6-0 in singles. Rajaratnam was in a battle in his first set, pulling out a 7-5 win and then coasted to a 6-3 straight-set victory. Even more important than the final score, Jeckel’s team is learning

that specialize in working with Parkinson’s patients. David Lauver, who runs PWR! Moves, a fitness, rehab, and wellness program designed for patients with Parkinson’s disease, will be present, as will Johnson. Amy Pavlov, massage therapist, will speak about how massage therapy can relax the muscles and help increase blood flow in patients with Parkinson’s. “There are lots of benefits (to massage therapy),” Pavlov said. Rock Steady Boxing classes, which are currently being held for the second year at the rec center, are based on a method that was developed when someone with Parkinson’s disease realized that boxing with a friend helped relieve his symptoms. In 2012, a training camp was launched to help spread word about the method. Johnson learned more about the story behind the method when she trained for her certification. She noted that Rock Steady may increase mobility and flexibility and lessen tremors. Both Lauver and Johnson will be running sample classes during the event. “We will both be present and doing demonstrations,” explained Johnson. “We are asking people to come prepared to do light exercises. (They should) wear comfortable clothing so they can partake in what we’re doing.” Johnson noted that Parkinson’s patients who cannot attend the event are welcome to try a class at any time during the year. Currently, PWR! Moves is taught on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7 to 8 p.m., and Rock Steady classes are from noon to 1 p.m. each Monday and Wednesday. Johnson said she has been pleased with response to the Rock Steady class. “We have about a dozen taking this session, but we have had up to 20 in the class,” she said. “We started small, and we continue to grow and add new members each month.” Refreshments will be served during the Meet and Mingle.
