Manheim

resident Jesse Rothacker and his son, Kenny, 12, spent the second half of February taking a deep dive into South Florida’s wilderness, with a goal of finding and

filming as many wild snakes as possible. Joined by Jesse’s friend Harvey Bird of New York City and Harvey’s son, Harvey Jr., 11, the Rothackers wanted to share their love of reptiles with the rest of the world. They recorded their adventures and then edited hundreds of

hours of video into a 60-minute educational film now available on YouTube. “Father/Son Everglades Adventure” provides an up-close look at snakes, with the goal of fulfilling the Rothackers’ mission of giving reptiles a chance.

Jesse, who operates the nonprofit Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary, said he took his first adventure trip to Florida with his lifelong friend Harvey in 2010, before either of them had families. “ We always hoped to go back, but it’s hard to kayak with crocodiles when you’re raising infants and toddlers,” Jesse joked. Thirteen years later, Harvey suggested the boys were finally old enough to join their dads on their return trip.

Jesse explained that the four didn’t go into the trip with an hourlong video in mind. He’s done similar trips that turned into short videos, he said, but when he returned home from this adventure, he knew he had plenty of entertaining footage.

One of the goals of the trip was to find a Burmese python, which didn’t happen for the adventurers, but they still learned a lot about the invasive snake. “We spoke to several Burmese python hunters down there who had been finding them,” Jesse recalled. “The video features a 9-footer that our friend f ound while we were there and another 126.5-pounder that other researchers found while we were there, and we interviewed the guys

who caught those pythons.” The fathers and sons did find a lot of other invasive species, including locating North America’s largest snake, the Eastern diamondback rattlesnake. They also got to “road cruise” a few venomous cottonmouths, a term for finding nocturnal snakes crossing the street after sunset.

Kenny said the road cruising was his favorite part of the trip. “We saw a lot of snakes, like corns, rats, kings, cottonmouths, garters and more,” he stated.

The trip provided an opportunity for the fathers and sons to make lasting memories as well. They kayaked with crocodiles, walked alongside manatees and tracked down invasive chameleons. “ We also had a good time doing normal stuff, like swimming in the pool, going to the beach, going out f or ice cream, throwing baseball and football at the park and going to the movies,” Kenny remarked.

Jesse hopes families will watch the video together or teachers will use it as a free resource. He noted that although viewers will see the four adventurers having fun with reptiles, people should use caution around wildlife. He added, “Please remember, we are trained professionals with decades of experience, and make sure you give wildlife plenty of space and respect when you encounter them.”

For three days in March, more than 200 middle school students got a firsthand look at careers in the construction industry at ABC Keystone’s Construction Wars. The students had the opportunity for hands-on work with industry professionals in the carpentry, masonry, sheet metal fabrication, electrical, plumbing and HVAC trades.

Represented schools in Lancaster and York counties included Garden Spot Middle School in Eastern Lancaster County School District; Gerald G. Huesken Middle School in Conestoga Valley School District; Manor Middle School in the Penn Manor School District; Warwick Middle School; Eastern York Middle School; Elizabethtown Area Middle School; Donegal Junior High School; The Janus School in Mount Joy; and La Academia Partnership Charter School. Construction Wars was held at ABC Keystone’s headquarters, 135 Shellyland Road, Manheim.

“ We offer this event to provide middle school students with exposure and awareness of our industry and hopefully spark their interest as they are making decisions moving into high school,” shared Stephanie R. Larkin, vice president of education, safety and workforce development for ABC Keystone. Larkin

Knier, Snell claim seven firsts in win over E-town

What happens when a Bear and a Baron tangle? In the case of the Elizabethtown Bears and the Manheim Central Barons meeting in a track meet on April 3rd, the result is a draw. The Barons claimed the girl’s meet 107-43 while the boys fell to E-town 94-55. Maddie Knier and Milan Snell combined for seven wins, four from Knier and all in the field. Knier’s victory parade started in the javelin before moving to the long jump, triple jump, and high jump. Snell meanwhile did all her work on the track, taking the 100m, 200m and 400m sprints. Abbie Reed (100H) and Liz Voegele (300H) teamed up for a hurdle sweep with Laci Nelson (shot put) and Chloe Enck (discus) finishing things up in the field. The Barons added two relay wins with Reed, Snell, Voegele and Sarah Forry taking the 1600m relay while Forry, Julia Kahler, Reagan Ibach and Julianna Lundberg teamed up for a 3200m relay win.

The boys managed seven wins with Kahlen Watt and Landon McGallicher splitting six of them evenly. Watt’s three wins came in the 100m,

the discus and high jump. McGallicher claimed both the 110H and the 300H while adding a 200m win. Wyatt Kupres added one final win in the discus.

VOLLEYBALL

The boys’ volleyball team continued down the unbeaten path with wins over Cocalico and Lancaster Mennonite pushing the Barons to 3-0. Central cruised by Cocalico on March 30th with wins of 2512, 25-20 and 25-19 making it a 3-0 sweep. Dylan Musser led the way with 29 assists and three blocks. Colin Rohrer added 19 digs and Landan Mattiace nine kills.

The going was just as easy on April 4th with a sweep over Mennonite coming thanks to scores of 25-14, 2517 and 25-18. Musser dished out 25 assists to go with one block while Reagan Miller paced the team with nine digs. Jacob Moyer added two aces to his team high seven kills.

TENNIS

The boys’ tennis team continued to march on, dropping their March 31st match with Exeter Township by a 5-0 final. The Barons bounced back on April 3rd, topping Lebanon, 5-2. Rodney Sauder

and Aaron Cassel fronted the win with both enjoying singles victories after teaming up for a number two doubles win. Ben Ginder and Owen Patten along with the Zach Spangler and Landen Statts duo gave Manheim Central a doubles sweep.

BASEBALL

The baseball team looks to be finding their groove with wins over Garden Spot and Donegal putting the Barons on the brink of a full-blown winning streak. Not all was good for the Barons as an 8-0 loss to Palmyra on March 31st shows. Chase Travitz and Cole Lawhorne split pitching duties with the pair combining for one strikeout and six walks with Travitz taking the loss after getting hit for six of the Cougars’ eight runs. Offense was hard to come by with Travitz, Brady Harbach, Jared Murray, and Logan McGallicher all collecting one hit each.

Central righted the ship on April 3rd, blowing by Garden Spot 16-0 in five innings. The bulk of the damage came in the fifth where 11 Manheim runs extended their 5-0 lead to a cushy 16-0. The game ended a half inning later after Lawhorne recorded two of the

final three outs via punch out. Murray picked up the easy win, pitching four innings with just two hits and no runs to go along with eight strike outs. Murray also helped his own cause with a two-hit, three-RBI day at the plate. Cayde Connelly matched the three RBI but had a single hit while Harbach, Ty Clugston and Colin Neiles each finished with two RBI.

Runs were more of a premium in Manheim’s April 5th win over Donegal with the Barons posting a 3-2 win. Nolan Book and Ky Watson both homered with Watson’s being the solo variety. Book’s two run shot came in the third, putting Central on top for good. Connelly earned the win after covering the initial five and one third innings. Lawhorne and Cael Martin covered the final two innings with Martin needing just two pitches to record the final out and the save.

SOFTBALL

The opening stretch of 2023 has been a trying one for the softball team. The Lady Barons did manage their first win of the season on April 3rd but losses to Palmyra and Donegal on either side of that win have Central at 1-3.

That April 3rd victory was over Garden Spot by a 1-0 final. The Lady Barons closed out March with a 2-1 loss to Palmyra on the 31st. Riley Hostetter got the start, but

Paige Garner took the loss after covering the final two innings. Together the pair allowed just two hits and had nine strikeouts, but five Central errors were too much to overcome. Kayleigh Detz had the lone RBI while Michaela Lauver had the lone hit.

After enjoying the Garden Spot win for a day or two the

Lady Barons were back at it, hosting Donegal on April 5th. The result was a 13-1 Lady Indian victory that was over after five innings. Hostetter was hit with the loss while Brianna Mylin accounted for the lone run with her first inning RBI. Lauver, Hostetter, Ava Kenneff and Hailey Peterson collected one hit each.

explained that students created a variety of take-home projects during the event, including a sheet metal toolbox and a wooden bench. Additionally, they wired lightbulbs and created a circuit, laid brick, were introduced to basic safety and CPR and learned about refrigeration.

Now is the time for students to consider careers in construction, Larkin said, noting that the demand for trade skills grows annually. Average

wages for some trades are $70,000 per year, and apprentices participate in earn-whileyou-learn programs, allowing them to access educational opportunities while working, with the potential to graduate debt free. She also emphasized that the industry provides multiple education and career pathways, ranging from apprenticeship to journeylevel worker to business owner.

ABC Keystone has held the event for more than five years, and Larkin remarked that it requires support from the community to pull it off.

“The event is only possible because we have 30 to 35 volunteers each day and very generous member sponsors who provide hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection, T-shirts, construction materials and lunches, along with items for goodie bags,” she said.

Springtime salad recipe

What better way to celebrate the warmer temperatures and brighter days than with light and tasty foods like salad?

For a twist on the traditional lettuce-based salad, opt for greens that have a little bite.

“Arugula and Artichokes” pairs two nutritious and delicious offerings in one salad. The recipe is courtesy of “The Mediterranean Diet Cookbook.”

Arugula and Artichokes (Serves 6)

Ingredients:

4 tablespoons olive oil

2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar

1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

1 clove garlic, minced

6 cups baby arugula leaves

6 oil-packed artichoke hearts, sliced

6 low-salt olives, pitted and chopped

1 cup cherry tomatoes, sliced in half

4 fresh basil leaves, thinly sliced

Directions:

1 - Make the dressing by whisking together the olive oil, vinegar, Dijon mustard, and garlic until there is a smooth emulsion. Set aside. Toss the arugula, artichokes, olives, and tomatoes together.

2 - Drizzle the salad with the dressing, garnish with the fresh basil, and serve.

“It’s so important to give kids a taste of the outdoors,” said Scot Harlacher, a member of the Donegal Fish and Conservation Association (DFCA). That’s the goal of the organization’s annual Kids Fishing Derby.

The event will be held on Saturday, April 15, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the reflecting pond on the grounds of Donegal Presbyterian Church,

1891 Donegal Springs Road, Mount Joy. The derby is open to all youths age 11 and under as well as all handicapped anglers who possess a current Pennsylvania fishing license.

“This is a really fun event,” Harlacher noted. “ We have kids who this is like Christmas morning for them. It’s that same level of excitement.”

He also noted that the event is a multigenerational experience. “We have parents

who went to this as kids and now they’re bringing their own kids,” he stated, noting that the event has been held at the church since the late 1990s.

The DFCA will stock the pond with more than 300 brook, rainbow, golden and brown trout. Participants will have the opportunity to catch up to five fish per person to take home. All fishermen must bring their own equipment and clean their own fish. DFCA members will be on hand until 11:30 a.m. to help fishermen, but all fishing will stop at 11 a.m.

Young anglers enjoy the Donegal Fish and Conservation Association’s annual Kids Fishing Derby.

The church will host a pancake breakfast during the event, and the meal will be open to the general public. It will be served from 7 to 11 a.m. in the church fellowship hall and will feature a menu of pancakes, sausage and juice, with coffee available for a separate charge. Proceeds from the breakfast will benefit the church’s annual mission trip to upstate New York. “This is one of our main fundraisers for that trip,” said Harlacher, who is a member of the church. “We’ve been going on this trip for more than 20 years to perform home rehabilitation projects.”

He noted that the fishing derby will be held rain or shine, and he encourages participants to come out no matter the weather. “Come early, bring your own equipment and come prepared to have fun,” he said. “Even if the weather is a little unfavorable, you can come in and warm up in the church, have breakfast and head back out to fish some more.”

All participants must register with the DFCA on the day of the derby. Parking will be permitted only in the Donegal Presbyterian Church parking area, with no street parking.

The DFCA is a local nonprofit organization focused on restoring the Donegal watershed to its original state. On Tuesday, April 18, the organization will dedicate a bridge at 617 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy, to Ken Depoe, the DFCA’s founder. Depoe started the organization in 1965, said Brandon Crouser, president of the organization.

State Sen. Ryan Aument will be present at the dedication ceremony, which will take place at 11 a.m.

For more information about the DFCA or to help with the derby, contact Crouser at 717-538-4370.
