Parkinson’s Wellness Event Posted

In recognition of April as Parkinson’s Awareness Month, Lititz recCenter will host its third annual Parkinson’s Meet and Mingle on Saturday, April 17, from 1 to 3 p.m. The event will be limited to 25 attendees so that guests can be wellspaced for comfort and safety.

The event will feature a free forum for individuals affected by Parkinson’s disease. Attendees will meet experts who are local professionals working in Parkinson’s disease and related fields. Information about fitness for Parkinson’s recovery, speech therapy, wellness and massage, and residential living services will be among the information and resources shared.

Fitness programs that Lititz recCenter offers for Parkinson’s wellness will be showcased, and individuals and their partners or caregivers will be provided an opportunitity to try elements of regularly offered programs. Attendees are encouraged to dress in comfortable clothing to participate in a light exercise demonstration of Rock Steady Boxing (RSB) classes.

RSB at the Lititz recCenter is in its third year, and the program has doubled in number of participants. RSB is led by certified coach and personal trainer Erica Johnson, who is Lititz recCenter’s fitness coordinator. This program is focused on maintaining functional health of individuals with Parkinson’s disease. Largescale movements and smaller muscular control are both engaged throughout the classes, which incorporate boxing routines. RSB is supported by trained volunteers who seek to help each participant get the most out of classes regardless of physical ability.

The Parkinson’s Meet and Mingle is free to attend. Staff and guests are asked to wear face coverings while participating in the program.
