Kreider Farms is known for its dairy products, but on Saturday, May 4, the focus will be on water when the Kreider family hosts a World Vision Global 6K for Water event. The 6-kilometer run/walk will begin at 525 Indian Village Road, Manheim, at 9 a.m. and will go through what marketing and social media specialist Khalee Kreider noted that her family calls “Kreider Valley.” “Last year, Kreider Farms hosted the Global 6K for the first year with high expectations to bring clean water to 2,000 people,” said Khalee, a member of the fourth generation to be involved in the family business. “We went over and beyond our goal, raising upward of $150,000 and providing clean water to over 3,000 people. We would like to meet or even exceed our achievement last year in 2019.” See Global 6K For Water pg 7

Attendees may bring a lawn chair or blanket if they prefer to sit during the show. At 3 p.m., the Lancaster County Conservation District will conduct a stream study with the purpose of investigating what aquatic insects are present in order to determine the health of the stream. An electro-fishing demonstration will take place immediately afterward. An electrical current will be run through the water, temporarily stunning the fish. The fish will then be collected in nets, temporarily placed in a fish tank, and identified to assess water quality. All fish are affected by electricity, so this method potentially produces fish that often elude anglers. Food will be available for purchase, with proceeds benefiting the TCCCA. Food may be purchased using cash only. Giveaway drawing tickets will be sold as a fundraiser. Attendees may go home with free wildflower seeds or a native tree seedling. Before the festivities begin, a tree planting will take place at the same location, starting at 9 a.m. Volunteers will receive a free meal from the food stand. Admission to the Conewago Creek Earth Day Celebration is free. The event is sponsored by the TCCCA, part of the

Annual Breakfast from pg 1 According to Ruhl, the event utilizes approximately 80 pounds of strawberries. “We usually go through all 80 pounds,” Ruhl noted, adding that folks are welcome to take home a portion for a set price, as well. The event is the final fundraiser for the church’s Mission Outreach Team, which will be heading to Clendenin, W.Va., in June. The group’s previous fundraiser, a chicken potpie dinner, was a huge success, according to organizers, and they are hopeful that the strawberry and waffle breakfast will help to finalize the financial portion of the trip. The Mission Outreach Team is a multigenerational group with older members as well as members in their teens. The group has served together in various capacities for approximately 10 years. The Clendenin trip will allow the group to help with flooding damage that continues to affect the area. Catastrophic flooding affected the impoverished Appalachian region in June 2016, and many families were displaced. According to Ruhl, not only can funding and help take a while to get to the areas in need, but after a time, aid decreases even though the need is still present. The Mission Outreach Team hopes to help with the continuing reconstruction of the area. “It is surprising that it takes so long to rebuild,” Ruhl shared. “The funds dry up but there are many people who are still in need of assistance, and we hope to be of help in any way we can.” For details on the breakfast fundraiser or the Mission Outreach Team, readers may visit www.ruhlschurch.org or call 717-665-3400.

The Lancaster County Conservation District recently recognized efforts in natural resource conservation in Lancaster County at its 68th awards banquet. Sara Xenophon, Kristen Kyler, and Jennifer Fetter, staff members of the Penn State Ag and the Environment Center, were honored as valuable partners in countless conservation and watershed projects throughout Lancaster County. Project highlights include the Conewago Watershed Initiative, the Little Conestoga Watershed Partnership, and the Chiques Creek Watershed Reenvisioned Project. Their work to establish a group of volunteers for tree plantings and their ability to work hand in hand with the Conservation District has improved water quality throughout the county. Lisa Hochreiter, agriculture educator at Warwick High School, received the Conservation Educator Award for her dedicated teaching, her commitment as an Envirothon adviser, and her support of student projects helping the local community in watershed cleanup events, trout stocking, and tree planting in riparian buffers. Mark Layton, wildlife center manager at Refreshing Mountain Retreat Center, was recognized with the Lancaster County Youth Conservation School Service Award. For several years, Layton has given his time to instruct teenagers enrolled in the field school about the conservation of reptiles and amphibians. Hands-on experience with local native species has helped to instill an appreciation and respect for the habitat needs of a variety of species. John Haldeman, roadmaster for Rapho Township, accepted the Outstanding Low Volume Road Project Award for the township’s innovation that involved reusing a culvert pipe in the redesign of a low-volume road and in the end improved water quality. Benton Webber, professional engineer for Lancaster Township, was awarded the Building Industry Resource Conservation Award. Through his research, review, and design, Webber partnered with an elementary school and an apartment complex to rebuild a new basin that has successfully managed stormwater and reduced runoff of 357,000 pounds of sediment that had at one time left a failing retention basin. The Conservation District honored Paula Harnish with the Conservation Service Award for her 20 years of service and her integrity in providing program support. The Outstanding Cooperator Award was presented to a dairy farmer in Caernarvon Township. The farmer has worked with the Conservation District and USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service to install a wide variety of conservation practices including a roofed manure storage, barnyard and vegetated treatment area, streambank fencing, stream cattle crossings, an improved animal trail, field contouring, and a gradient field terrace. The family milks 40 cows on a 78-acre farm.

Separate fees have been set for adults and for children under age 18. World Vision promises that each Global 6K for Water adult participant’s registration fee provides clean water for one person in need for a lifetime. Six kilometers has been set for the event to represent how far the average person in the developing world must walk for water, which is often contaminated, to sustain themselves and their families. According to information provided by World Vision, the average woman in rural Africa walks 6 kilometers to haul 40 pounds of water every day. Worldwide, women and girls spend a combined 200 million hours hauling water daily. Water projects by World Vision are developed in conjunction with local leaders to create safe sources of drinking water, whether through a borehole well, an irrigation system, or a pump or filtration system powered by a solar panel. The organization also provides training so that local folks can maintain and repair the systems to ensure the project is sustainable. Although this is the second year the Kreider family has hosted a Global 6K site, Khalee’s parents, Ron and Hollee, have had a long-standing relationship with World Vision. “They have been on multiple trips with World Vision to multiple countries including Kenya, Zambia, Tanzania, Malawi, India, and Bangladesh to see the work first hand that World Vision is doing in these developing communities,” Khalee said. “Last year we were excited to host a 6K on our farm and invite the community to join us in supporting this organization close to our hearts and make an impact bringing clean water, something we all take for granted, to children and communities around the world.” The run/walk will be held rain or shine. Last year’s event took place in the rain. “It ended up pouring last year, so we have our fingers crossed for sun. We prayed for water, and we got it, just not in the form we were expecting,” Khalee joked. Most of the course will be on paved roads or sidewalks, but there may be sections that are gravel. Strollers are welcome, and Khalee noted that even with the rain last year, people using strollers did not seem to have difficulties with the course. At the end of the course, chocolate milk, other beverages, and lactosefree ice cream will be served. Off-site parking will be available at Doe Run Elementary School, 281 Doe Run Road, Manheim, and Manheim Brethren in Christ Church, 54 N. Penryn Road, Manheim. Shuttles will run from the parking lots to the start line beginning at 7 a.m., with the last shuttle picking up at 8:30 a.m. The buses will start back up at 10:30 a.m. to transport folks back to the parking areas. Participants may register in advance at www.teamworldvision.org/team/kreider farms, or they may sign up at the event.

Golf Outing from pg 1 women whom Bridge of Hope @ GSS has helped become independent and successful. Bridge of Hope @ GSS aims to reduce homelessness among all women and children in the local community. From 2017 to 2018, its Permanent Housing Services program served 208 women and children, provided $87,792 in rental assistance to single mothers across Lancaster and Chester counties and helped 12 families graduate from the program, according to www.goodsamservices.org. The organization’s services include case management and goal planning, resource development, life skills and parenting support, mentoring/volunteer support and financial assistance for rent, utilities and transportation. In 2017, Good Samaritan Services took Bridge of Hope Lancaster and Chester Counties under its wing via a merger between the nonprofits. Both had the same mission but offered different services, so combining allowed them

to be even more effective in accomplishing their goals. “As a result of the merger, families in our Bridge of Hope @ GSS program can now participate in our Matched Savings and Microloan programs,” explained Nate Hoffer, the CEO of Good Samaritan Services. “The Matched Savings program awards $600 and the Microloan program awards loans up to $2,500 to clients, which, when paid back, rebuilds their credit.” In October 2018, the Bridge of Hope @ GSS program was given several awards from Bridge of Hope National for being the highest-performing program site in the network across both the U.S. and Canada. “We received awards for serving the most families and successfully helping families move into permanent housing,” said Hoffer. Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) will again partner with Bridge of Hope @ GSS for the 12th annual Golf Outing, which completely benefits the

Barons Wins Three Straight, Now 10-1 By Eric G. Stark

The Manheim Central baseball team is white hot, winning three games last week to improve its record to 10-1 in Section Three of the Lancaster-Lebanon League and 11-2 overall.

The Barons got things started Tuesday, April 16 with an 11-1 win over Annville-Cleona. Drew Mummau was 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs and Curt Kroesen was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Pitcher Hunter Hess picked up the win on the mound going five innings, striking out five and surrendering

Cole Lastinger delivers a pitch in relief for the Barons in their 7-6, eight-inning victory over Lancaster Mennonite last Tuesday in Manheim.

two hits. Manheim needed extra innings for a come-from-behind 7-6 victory Wednesday, April 17 against Lancaster Mennonite. Down 6-1 going into the bottom of the fifth, the Barons scored three runs in the fifth inning and two in the sixth to tie the game at 6-6. They eventually won in the bottom of the eighth on a passed ball. Cole Lastinger had a great all-around game, pitching five inning in relief of starter Wyatt Becker, allowing no runs while striking out five. Lastinger also showed his offensive muscles by doubling in the tying run in the sixth. Offensively, Kroesen was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and three stolen bases and scored the winning run. Hunter Hess was 2-for-3 with two RBI’s and three stolen bases. “The pitching has been really good, along with the timely hitting,” head coach Jason Thompson said. “Wednesday’s win was good for us to face some adversity being down and proving to themselves they can come back from a fairly decent deficit.” Thursday, April 18 the Barons played a non-league game against Conestoga Valley, thumping the Buckskins 10-0. Manheim strung together a 6-hit

attack and scored five runs in the third inning to put the game away. They added two runs in the fourth, a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth inning. Pitcher Colton Book threw five shutout innings to go to 5-0 on the season, surrendering four hits with seven strikeouts. Drew Mummau was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and four RBIs, including a grand slam. It was his third home run of the season. Cam Eberly was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. SOFTBALL It is safe to say the Barons are swinging the bats well and getting great pitching, outscoring their opponents 34-7. Manheim strung together a 10hit attack in an easy 11-1 victory over Annville-Cleona, in a Section Three and Section Four crossover game Monday, April 15. The Barons scored twice in the first inning, three times in the second and added two runs in the third to blow the game open. Codi Bollinger hit a home run for Manheim. Pitcher Jordan Walter struck out eight and walked two to gain the win in the circle. They followed that performance with a 17-1 triumph against Lancaster Mennonite Wednesday, April 17. The Barons pounded out 13 hits.

Bollinger added two more home runs and Gabby Wettig added a round-tripper. Central blew the game open with an 11-run third inning. Manheim came from behind to beat Conestoga Valley 6-5 Thursday, April 18 in a Section Three and Section Four crossover game. CV lead 5-0 after five innings, but Manheim rallied with four runs in the sixth and added a run in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game 5-5 and send the action into extra innings. They scored in the bottom of the eighth for the walk-off win. Walter pitched another gem, striking out nine batters and walking just one. VOLLEYBALL The Barons extended its L-L League win streak to 31, dating back to 2016, after a 3-0 victory against Lebanon, winning games 25-16, 25-11 and 25-12. Earlier in the week, the Barons beat Garden Spot 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-20) Tuesday, April 16. Jeremiah Zimmerman dished out 35 assists against the Spartans. Mason Nissley filled up the statistics with 28 kills, two digs and six aces. “Nissley and Brandyn Musser were standout performers this

week,” head coach Craig Dietrich said. “We didn’t play particularly well against Garden Spot and I’d like to see better blocking and defense out of our team. Our younger guys need to be more consistent night in and night out. With all that said we are 7-0 in Section 2 and we have won 31 consecutive matches 3-0 over the last 2 1/2 years.” Nissley, a senior, is an All-State selection and is a big-time college recruit. Musser, a junior, is starting to earn respect around the league. “Musser is a swiss army knife,” Dietrich said. “He can do everything and play any position we need him to.” The Barons are undefeated, but their expectations are high to get back to the league, district and state finals. Are they on pace to reach these lofty goals? “We are still a little bit off from where we need to be, but it’s within our grasp,” the coach said. TRACK & FIELD The girls track team defeated Cocalico 93-57 Wednesday, April 17. The underclassmen highlighted an eventful day for the Lady Barons. Rachel Nolt, Elsie Kline, and Lexi Hosler were double winners. Manheim won the 4x400 and 4x800. “This was an absolute team win for

To his credit, he recovered to pull out an 11-9 third set victory. Manheim eased past Ephrata 4-3 Wednesday, April 17, forcing a three-way tie for the Section Two title. The two teams split the singles matches, 2-2, but Central won at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, 8-3 and 8-4, respectively.
