Rolling along to grant wishes
BY CATHY MOLITORISWhen the Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy rolls through town on Sunday, May 12, it will honor a tradition that began 35 years ago with the wish of one child.
“It all began with Wish Kid Matt Strawser,” said Michelle Ruel, director of marketing and communications for Make-AWish Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley. “Matt was fascinated with big rig trucks, so it was no surprise he wished to ride in a big rig and talk to his sister, Heather, on the CB radio.”
Since 1990, almost 12,000 trucks have driven in the Convoy, and the event has raised more than $9.2 million, granting wishes to more than 900 children in the Susquehanna Valley.
This year’s Convoy will kick off with a carnival beginning at 9 a.m. at the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction, 1190 Lancaster Road, Manheim. The Convoy will depart at 1:30 p.m.
“For first-time attendees, the Mother’s Day Truck Convoy is an
absolute must-visit,” Ruel said. “From the moment you step inside, you’ll be immersed in a world of excitement and entertainment perfect for the entire family. … Treat yourself to delicious food, test your skills at carnival games and explore the array of merchandise available.” Wish Kid Troy will share his inspiring story and sign copies of his book, “Chemo Dog.”
“But the real magic awaits you outdoors,” Ruel shared. “Witness the grand entrance of hundreds of trucks, each a sight to behold, as they roll into the venue. As you marvel at the impressive display, indulge in the diverse food truck offerings. And amidst the bustling atmosphere, take the opportunity to connect with the many Wish Kids and their families, whose stories are sure to touch your heart.”
Those who attend the event will have the opportunity to win gift baskets, and an online auction will run through noon on May 12. A drive-through chicken barbecue organized by SEI Catering will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., featuring barbecue chicken thighs, cheesy potatoes, green beans, a
dinner roll, a cookie and a drink. No advance purchase is necessary, and dinners will be available until sold out.
At noon, a program will honor the 35th anniversary of the Convoy before the trucks leave the lot, accompanied by more than 50 Wish Kids. Ruel anticipates more than 400 trucks participating in the Convoy this year.
“It’s a breathtaking sight that encapsulates the spirit of this remarkable event,” she commented.
Last year’s event raised $553,838, the second-highest total in the event’s history. Organizers have set a goal of $595,000 for this year.
“Every dollar raised at this event goes toward granting the wishes of children in the Susquehanna Valley,” Ruel said. “With nearly 75% of wishes funded through this event, your participation directly impacts the lives of deserving children and families.”
The Convoy will follow a route through Manheim to Elizabethtown and Mount Joy. For more information, including a route map and access to the online auction, visit www.wishconvoy.org.
Lifting Manheim up in prayer
BY CATHY MOLITORISThere’s power in prayer, and Love In the Name of Christ (INC) and the Manheim Ministerium want you to feel it.
“Through prayer, we seek wisdom to discern the needs of our communities, courage to address challenges and compassion to serve others
well,” said Katie Leaman, communications and donor development coordinator for Love INC. “We want to be able to hear, understand and pray for the needs of the Manheim community.”
Love INC and local pastors will pray for community needs during a virtual National Day of Prayer event on Thursday, May 2.
Women’s Club funds community organizations
BY CATHY MOLITORISEverything the Women’s Club of Manheim does is intended to support the community, and the organization met that goal recently with the awarding of 17 grants, totaling $15,970.
“Our mission is to develop the educational, social and civic interests of our members through community service, civic responsibility and the friendship of its members,” said Lucile Longo, grant committee chair. “We believe our grants
serve our mission of supporting the Manheim community.” Grants ranged from $500 to $1,000 and were awarded to a wide variety of community groups. Manheim Central Post Prom committee received a grant to provide food, games and fun in a drug- and alcohol-free environment. Love Give Live, doing business as Purr-fect Love, will use grant funds to trap, neuter and return stray cats in the Manheim area. The Manheim Chamber of Commerce plans to use its grant funds to paint a mural

recalled. “As we began to hear and better understand the Manheim community, both Love INC and the ministerium shared a passion for expanding our effectiveness in serving the Manheim area more intentionally.”
The organizations are working together to support various streams of countywide ministry.
“Our mobilization campaigns, The Metamorph, The Project and The Meal, are opportunities for churches to mobilize their church congregations to serve their neighbors,” Leaman noted.
in 10 school districts. Over the summer, church members will support their neighbors in need by providing essential home repairs. The Meal takes place in November and is a time when individuals and families connect with and bless their neighbors by providing the ingredients for a Thanksgiving meal. “In November of 2023, church families from four school districts served 60 families in need,” Leaman said.
30 years, Leaman said, and the partnership with the Manheim Ministerium will help the service deepen its positive influence.
“Beginning in Manheim Central, we foresee additional impact in Hempfield and Manheim Township schools,” Leaman commented. “A steering team is meeting monthly, working on a permanent home for the Hope & Wholeness Center.”

Love INC and the Manheim Ministerium have been working together since the fall of 2022 to respond quickly to the needs of people in the Manheim Central School District, Leaman shared. When people contact a church for assistance, they are referred to Love INC, where staff members and volunteers help connect people with the support they need.
Soon, the two organizations realized they could do even more. “Love INC began a more formal relationship vetting needs for the churches in Manheim,” Leaman

“Smile and wave” with the Donegal Alumni Band
BY CATHY MOLITORISWhen Glen Leib formed the Donegal Alumni Band in 2004, he had a dream. The longtime Donegal High School band director wanted to gather 100 people to participate with the group in a Memorial Day parade.
After Leib’s death last July, members of the group are working in earnest to make his wish come true.
The Donegal Alumni Band is looking for members - and you don’t have to be a Donegal grad to join. Anyone is welcome, especially people who live in the Donegal area or are connected to Donegal alumni.
The band formed 20 years ago during the 50th anniversary of Donegal High School, said Jason Spickler, who is a member of the band steering committee.
“Before that, alumni were invited to participate with the high school band at football games and various things like that, but the Donegal Alumni Band formed to be more of a parade band for Memorial Day events and other special events,” he said.
Joining the alumni band was a no-brainer for the current members, said Sharon Boyer, who is also on the steering committee and
who enjoyed playing in the band in high school.
“It was always a whole lot of fun. I loved the camaraderie with

Currently, the Donegal Alumni Band has about 50 active members. The group performs with small ensembles at events such as Winterfest in Mount Joy and has played in the Manheim Memorial Day Parade.

Rounding out the steering committee of the Donegal Alumni Band are Steve Hassinger, Shawn Kreiner, Jackie Wein Roberts and Debbie Painter, Leib’s daughter.
Tucker noted that the band is looking for band front members as well, and he emphasized that there is room for everyone in the band.
“There are people I run into who say, ‘I can’t play anymore,’” he said.
“And we say, ‘That’s OK. Just come along and walk with us. Just join us.’” The group will also have a truck or trailer to transport people who want to participate with the band but aren’t physically able to march, and the group has instruments for players to borrow if needed.
Uniforms of hats and T-shirts are provided, and the shirts display a message that has special meaning for the band members.
“The back of the shirt says, ‘Smile and Wave,’ and that is our theme,” Tucker explained. “It came from one of the first times we played in a parade, and to say the spectators were a little hostile is an understatement. And Glen, in his wisdom, he said, ‘You want to be courteous always. Just smile and wave.’”
