Musical Packs Serious Message LAMS To Present “More To The Story” BY ANN MEAD ASH
Nicole Yutzy, director of the Lititz Area Mennonite School (LAMS) production of “More to the Story,” does not shrink from involving her cast members in the creation of her original shows. “For this show, I asked the students, ‘What kind of characters would you like to play and what kind of show would you like to be in?’” recalled Yutzy of the process.
“When you’re writing from scratch, it’s a challenge.” “More to the Story,” a show that mixes classic fairy tale characters with fresh roles to explore “heroism” in the person of Robin Hood, played by Ethan Sommers, will be staged at Landis Hall at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim, on Saturday, May 7, and Sunday, May 8, at 2 and 7 p.m. each day. event, held at ABC Keystone, 135 Shellyland Road, Manheim. They were given opportunities to wire electrical circuits, build wooden benches, lay brick, construct PVC pipe projects and bend sheet metal to create toolboxes. Additionally, participants learned basic CPR techniques, reviewed safety requirements and explored construction technology.
According to ABC Keystone, the construction industry needs more than 650,000 additional workers in 2022 alone to meet the rising demand. “We developed the Construction Wars program because we feel it’s important for kids to have the opportunity to learn what this industry is all about,” explained Stephanie Larkin, vice president of education, safety and workforce development for ABC Keystone. She noted that targeting middle school students gives participants a chance to consider enrolling in career and technology programs by the time they enter high school. For the program, students worked alongside professionals in the industry to learn skills and create projects to take home. “This is an infinite industry. There will always be a need for this type of job and for people to do this work,” said David Rivera, who supervised students in the carpentry project. Eighth-grader Jasmine Gutierrez said her favorite part of the day was the carpentry work. “It was a really cool experience to learn how people make things and to get to see what these jobs are,” she stated. “This day was really fun.”
According to Homeless Shelters Directory, there are an estimated 950 homeless individuals in Lancaster and Chester counties. It costs Good Samaritan Services (GSS) $35 to provide a night of shelter, two meals, supplies, and compassionate care to an individual. That is about one-third the cost of a hotel per night. Previously known as Good Sam Shelter, GSS has been operating

first song we sing is ‘A Cover Is Not the Book’ from ‘Mary Poppins Returns,’” said Yutzy. Another big dance number is “Don’t Break the Rules” from “Catch Me If You Can.” Yutzy has also utilized “All for the Best” from Godspell to highlight two perspectives. “It can mean it’s all going to work out or it means it’s only for the best of the people, and the poor get the short end of the stick,” she said. Yutzy has been impressed by the talents and efforts of the students in the show. She noted that Hansel, also played by Sommers, and Gretel, played by Daisy Gettle, both are working to learn German accents. “I enjoy writing things that challenge the students,” she said. “I want to grow them as actors and people.” She noted that giving students a fun challenge and seeing them make a role work is a joy. “They come alive on stage (when) they explore what they didn’t know they could do before.” According to Yutzy, the message of the show should resonate with audiences in a society where social media is so prevalent. “There are so many ways we instantly judge someone by how they look or dress or what they post politically or religiously,” said Yutzy. “(I hope) that audiences would ask if they instantly judge … and to take a (moment to think) before they judge (rather than) decide if people are shady or respectable based on the way they dress or speak.” Other characters include Esme Lee, played by Marissa Harrington; Elvin Martin, played by Jefferson Trilby; Lord Bradshaw and Jack Horner, played by Maison Martin; Jill Horner, played by Aliya Miller; Little Bo Peep, played by Olga Prikhodko; Leopold Lockhart and Liam Lockhart, played by Tyler Sommers; and Frank and Little John, played by TJ Stoltzfus. Some of the services offered by GSS include eviction prevention, case management services, emergency shelter, transitional housing, affordable housing, and permanent housing services across Lancaster and Chester counties. The organization’s end goal is to empower people to feel confident and capable enough to maintain their own safe and stable housing. Since July 1, 2021, GSS has served 475 people, and more than 200 individuals have graduated from the organization’s programs and are in stable housing. Starting this year, GSS will offer its clients in-house counseling, and it will expand the women’s shelter in Ephrata. The organization also opened a men’s shelter in Ephrata on April 1. Ninety-seven percent of GSS’ funding comes from community donations and fundraisers such as the annual Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) Golf Outing. The 15th annual EPC Golf Outing will take place on Friday, June 10, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville, with tee times at

Watching the students try something new was inspiring to Ira Berman, a carpenter journeyman with Arthur Funk & Sons. “This is such a great opportunity to get these kids out of their comfort zone and give them a chance to try something new,” he said. “This could plant a seed that could grow into something great.” Doug Dvorchak, representing Murray insurance, said Construction Wars is one of his favorite days of the year. “When a student gets to hold a drill for the first time, it’s great to see their eyes light up,” he remarked. “They get to make something they can take home to share with the families, and they get to do hands-on work with mentors in the industry.” This is the fifth year ABC Keystone has held the event, and it’s needed more than ever, said Dave Sload, president and CEO of the organization. “We want to expose kids to what’s available to them and help them see the value of this work,” he stated. “We are one of the last ‘American Dream’ industries. You can start in the trenches and work your way up to owning your own business. We want these kids to see what’s possible.”

Softball Teams Scores 55 Runs In Four Games
BY ERIC PYLES
In the sports world there are various levels of hot and typically a 3-1 stretch would not qualify for any of them but when you outscore your opponents 55-10, as the softball team has, it falls somewhere on the ‘hot’ spectrum. Manheim kicked off the run by walloping Columbia 23-2 on the 20th. Gabby Wettig earned the win after recording all four outs via strikeout while also driving in seven runs on three hits, including a first inning grand slam that helped fuel a 13-run frame. Miranda Ober and Kayleigh Detz combined for six singles and eight RBIs in a supporting role. Riley Hostetter covered the final five outs in relief. Manheim continued to roll on the 22nd, throttling Lancaster Mennonite 19-0 in five
innings. Wettig covered the first three innings to earn the win with Hostetter finishing. Hostetter helped at the plate with a two-hit, three RBI day but it was Detz leading the way with four RBI on two singles. The Lady Barons hit a bump on the 23rd, suffering a 4-1 loss to Conestoga Valley. Wettig allowed just seven hits, but the Buckskins were able to produce four runs to steal the win. The Lady Barons were unable to solve CV ace Rhiannon Henry leaving Mickey Lauver’s double as the lone hit. Central went back to dominating on the 25th, topping Garden Spot 12-4. Wettig rang up six Lady Spartans over her seven innings, scattering eight hits on her way to the win. Emma Damon produced another seven RBI game, falling a single short of the cycle. Hostetter added one-hit and two-RBI.

BASEBALL The wins keep coming for the Manheim Central baseball team, with four more upping the Baron’s overall record to 13-1. Manheim needed four innings to roll by Columbia 230 on the 20th. Connor Rohrer and Cole Lawhorne combined for the one-hit shutout with Rhorer getting the start and the win thanks to eight strikeouts. Mason Weaver fronted the offense with four RBI. Ky Watson and Collin Neiles both enjoyed one-hit, three-RBI games. The Barons’ shutout streak reached 12 innings with 9-0 win over Lancaster Mennonite on the 22nd. Jared Murray got the win for five innings on the mound while Lawhorne finished with two shoutout innings. The pair combined for 15 strikeouts with Murray responsible for 12. Watson and Brady Harbach plated two runs each. Andrew Harrison chipped in with an RBI single in the fourth. Central finally allowed a run in their April 23rd game but still posted a 9-1 victory over Conestoga Valley. The run was the lone pockmark on winning pitcher Cayde Connelly’s stat line. He finished with eight strikeouts over six innings with Rohrer finishing the final three outs. Dylan Yoder broke out the big bat with two hits and five RBI. Harrison added two RBIs on two hits. Things were closer in Manheim’s April 25th contest
where the Barons survived a late Garden Spot rally to post a 4-2 win. Rohrer tallied 10 strikeouts but only picked up the win thanks to the relief work of Lawhorne and Murray who secured the final two outs. Collin Thompson drove in two runs with his first inning single while Harbach pushed across an insurance run with a sac fly in the third. VOLLEYBALL The boys’ volleyball team inched closer to a postseason berth with wins over Lebanon and Cocalico. Manheim had little trouble with the Cedars on the 21st, posting wins of 25-5, 25-13 and 25-12 in their sweep. Trent Groff (eight digs, seven kills) led the way with help from Josh Dippel’s nine kills. Things were more difficult on the 26th as Manheim needed all five games to get by Cocalico 3-2. After taking the opening game 27-25, the Barons dropped two straight, 25-21 and 25-20, to sit on the brink of defeat. Manheim evened the match with a 25-9 victory before earning the win with a 15-9 game five. Musser dished out 56 assists, Barend Oostdam helped with 12 kills and John Wenger added 14 digs. TENNIS The boy’s tennis team wrapped up their regular season with losses to Ephrata and Central York. It was a near miss against Ephrata on the 22nd with the Mountaineers
posting a 4-3 win. Luke Horst and Rodney Sauder picked up the lone doubles win while Horst and Owen Patten added singles victories. The regular season ended on the 25th with a 6-1 loss to Central York. Ben Ginder managed the lone victory, needing three sets to take the number one singles match. TRACK It may not have been ‘A Tale of Two Cites’ but it was the best of times and the worst of times for the Central track teams in their April 25th tango with Solanco. The boys had to deal with the worst of times courtesy of a 95-55 loss while the Lady Barons enjoyed the best of times via a 92-58 win. Four different Lady Barons produced nine of Manheim’s 10 individual event wins while also lending their service in the three relay wins. Madison Knier picked up four wins (javelin, high, long, and triple jumps), with Sarah Forry (800m, 1600m) and Malea Stoner (100H, 300H) adding two each. All three were joined by Abigail Reed for a 1600m relay win. Reed and Rachel Nolt joined Snell and Stoner for a 4x100 win. Forry picked up another relay win in the 3200m relay with help from Julianna Lindberg, Grace Haldeman, and Emma Herman. Snell added a 400m win to her two-relay wins while Nolt (200m) accounted for the final win. The boy’s earned nine wins
on the day. Kahlen Watt commanded the 100m, 200m and javelin, while also taking part in the 4x100 along with Larry Marley, Landon McGallicher and Bode Sipel. McGallicher won in the 110H and 300H with another relay win coming in the 1600m with help from Cam Evans, Michael Greenwalt and Gabe Redcay. Redcay picked up the final win on the track, taking the 800m while Tyler Fahnestock posted a discus win to close thigs out. Manheim spent April 22nd at the Twin Valley Invitational collecting serious hardware. The Barons posted 13 topthree performances with another six fourth place finishes. The Lady Barons led the way with nine of those 13 including golds from Stoner (300H) and Laci Nelson (discus). The pair also picked up bronze for their work in the 100H (Stoner) and the shot put (Nelson). Snell (400m) and Reed (300H) both enjoyed silver as did the 1600m relay team. Nolt (high jump) and the 400m relay team rounded out the top-three performances with Reed adding a fourth in the 100H. McGallicher earned the lone gold for the boys in the 110H, pairing it with his silver in the 300H. Watt added a bronze in the javelin with Fahnestock doing the same in the discus. The pair also accounted for two fourth place finishes with Watt in the high jump and Fahnestock the shot put.

Greg Grove (center) at a camp in Ghana in January BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Each step you take on Saturday, May 21, can make a difference in a child’s life. The ninth annual Arm of Hope 5K will be held beginning at 9 a.m. at Hope Community Church, 1806 Harrisburg Ave., Mount Joy. Proceeds will benefit Arm of Hope, a Ghanaian-run ministry. “It’s a fun event for a great cause,” said Greg Grove, one of the race directors, noting that the course is mostly flat and very family-friendly. “We take walkers, strollers, dogs, families. If you’re a serious runner, we have trophies, but if you just want to come and walk the course, you are welcome.” The top male and female finishers will receive hand-carved trophies from Ghana, while baked goods will be awarded to the winners in various age groups. “We’re really excited to bring the baked goods back,” Grove said, explaining that the treats were not offered after the race for the past two years in the height of the pandemic. “Volunteers at the church make the baked goods and everyone loves them.” Additionally, a variety of door prizes will be available for all participants. Registration for the 5K is by donation only, with proceeds helping to fund programs for children living in
the slums of Ghana. “Part of the Arm of Hope ministry is providing a summer camp program, where the kids get together to do fun activities, learn about Jesus, do crafts, play games,” Grove explained. “It’s something the kids really look forward to. They get three warm meals a day and they get to sleep on a mattress, which is something they don’t normally get to do.” Grove noted that it costs $50 to send a child to camp and that funding is provided by both the 5K proceeds and additional donations. Last year, 600 children attended the camps. Grove has gone to the camp for four years, including this past January. His race co-directors, Keith Franz and Kirk Belmont, have also attended the camp. Grove noted that Arm of Hope began as a ministry of Hope Community Church but was recently granted nonprofit status as its own organization. Along with a donation to participate in the race, people are encouraged to participate in peer-to-peer fundraising to multiply their impact. The top fundraisers will receive thank-you gifts including sweatshirts and YETI stainless-steel tumblers. To register for the Arm of Hope 5K, visit www.armofhopeinghana .org/5K. Same-day registration at the site will be available, but participants who register online by Saturday, May 7, will receive a race T-shirt.
