MCFEE Virtual Auction To Support District Students Event To Fund Grant For Therapy/Reading Dogs The Manheim Central Foundation for Educational Enrichment (MCFEE) will host a new fundraising event, the 2020 MCFEE 4 Kids Virtual Auction, starting on Friday, May 8, and continuing through Sunday, May 17. The virtual auction event format was chosen after MCFEE’s signature fundraiser, the 17th annual MCFEE 4 Kids Auction event that had been set for March 28, was canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions. Upon cancellation of the March 28 event, the MCFEE Auction Committee and trustees began considering a safe and practical alternative, and they decided on the virtual auction. “Supporters can now participate in the fundraiser from the comfort of their homes,” explained MCFEE executive
director Amy Howett, noting that the auction is open to the public. Registration and an auction preview are currently open. Starting on May 8, individuals may participate in the virtual auction via Bidpal, a mobile auction fundraising platform, by visiting www.bidpal.net/mcfee4kids.org. “Anyone can register and participate in the auction from a PC, a laptop, or any smart mobile device,” Howett noted, adding that the virtual auction platform is designed to be user friendly. Hundreds of auction items will be up for bids. “There truly is something for everyone,” Howett said. Among the items will be more than 40 themed
baskets, children’s items, sports items, tickets, and arts and crafts, including quilts and handmade items. “Many gift cards and certificates are up for bids from local Lancaster County restaurants and small businesses,” Howett pointed out, adding, “What a great way to support these local businesses in the near future.” A variety of experiences will be offered as well, such as Kalahari Resort waterpark passes and a gift card; a rafting adventure for four on Pine Creek in the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon; an Amorette wine pairing and five-star dining experience; a Hotel Hershey spa experience; See MCFEE pg 7
Manheim Central student supporters are excited for the MCFEE 4 Kids Virtual Auction, set for May 8 to 17. The auction, which is open to the public, will fund a grant that will provide two MC Reads therapy/reading dogs for Baron and Doe Run elementary schools.

Making Masks In Manheim

Sarah Adams, of Lititz, was 16 weeks pregnant with her son, Davin, when she and her husband, Clark, received heartbreaking news in May 2018. “We found out … that he had a rare terminal condition,” recalled Sarah, who noted that her son’s problems were caused by a genetic condition called Noonan’s syndrome. Neither she nor her husband carries the gene for the condition. In the face of the news, both Sarah and Clark turned to their faith. “We know God can heal, but we know He doesn’t always heal,” said Sarah. “Every week that (Davin) was living and growing and sick, (we thought), ‘Let’s see if we can get further.’” Sarah said the situation taught her how to live in the moment. “I coped by enjoying the time we had, so we had a gender reveal party and a baby shower,” said Sarah, who noted that she has a number of photos from throughout her pregnancy. On Aug. 1, 2018, Sarah noticed she did not feel Davin moving as often as usual. “We went to the doctor, and they did an ultrasound,” said Sarah.
In mid-March, when Joyce Luscian of Elizabethtown asked her friend Nancy Hopper of Manheim, who is a retired costume maker for Colonial Williamsburg, Va., to help her make

masks for workers at a Penn Medicine outpatient facility in Lebanon, Hopper went right to work. Using material she already had, Hopper completed about 30 masks, which Luscian delivered at cost to her co-workers. “At that point, we were screening each patient coming through the door,” said Luscian, who is no longer working at the clinic because she is immunocompromised. “We were taking temperatures, asking if they had traveled or had shortness of breath.” Unfortunately, the shortage of personal protective equipment masks, face shields, and glasses - meant the workers were asked to complete the screenings without being provided with the necessary gear. Luscian had turned to Hopper because of her seamstress skills. “(Luscian) gave me a pattern she had found online,” said Hopper, adding, “(The masks) are not difficult to make.” The pattern Luscian found See Masks pg 3
Nancy Hopper (left) of Manheim and Joyce Luscian (right) of Elizabethtown have teamed up with (not pictured) Susan Tucker and Sue Hess to make masks for those in need of them during the COVID-19 crisis.

knew she would be in bed in the hospital for four days. Following the surgery, her son was wrapped in blankets and brought to her. “It was great to meet him, even though he wasn’t there in spirit, because there was the connection (from carrying him), said Sarah. “It was such a great experience to have him all day. Sarah learned that she was able keep her son with her because Women and Babies Hospital has a piece of equipment made in the United Kingdom called a CuddleCot. “I had never heard of it, said Sarah, who noted that the CuddleCot, which had been donated to Women and Babies by another family that lost a baby, is a cooling device that extends the time parents can spend with a child who has been stillborn or died shortly after birth. “We kept him (with us) for three days, said Sarah. The availability of the CuddleCot was the beginning of a journey that led Sarah and Clark to found Our Baby’s Legacy, with a mission to “provide families of pregnancy and infant loss with tools for comfort, community for support, and an opportunity to create a legacy for their child. The CuddleCot was not the only comforting experience to inspire Sarah, whose sister had added weighted beads to a stuffed bunny for Sarah. “There are companies that make weighted teddy bears for people who are grieving, (whether) it’s the loss of a child or another kind of grief, said Sarah. “There are a lot of studies about how physically holding something weighted helps. The stuffed bunny now holds Davin’s ashes and a recording of his heartbeat. “It has created this little representation (of Davin), said Sarah. “I still hold it and travel with it. I include it in photos. It has become a memorial to him. Around the first anniversary of her son’s birth, Sarah wanted to do something special to commemorate him. “I thought I would work to donate a CuddleCot, she said, noting that raising the funds for the device led her to a revelation. “I wanted to start a nonprofit that included all these tools for comfort. By including other grieving families, Sarah has made it possible for them to honor their lost children. “When you lose your baby, no matter what stage, it grieves you to move forward in your life with them not being a part of it, she said. “Creating a legacy for (that child) is a way to include them. At the organization’s website, www.ourbabyslegacy.com, parents can learn about how to be part of a family group purchasing a CuddleCot for a hospital, find tools of comfort such as the weighted animals, and become part of a supportive community. “(This effort is) how I include my son, explained Sarah. “I feel he is still very much part of my life because of building that legacy.

“There was no heartbeat. The condition had caused Davin to have hydrops - a fluid buildup in areas of the body - that was too hard on the baby’s heart. Sarah’s body was swelling as well from the excess fluid. A vertical C-section was scheduled for Aug. 2. When Sarah was being prepped for the surgery, she asked one of the attending medical professionals how long she would be allowed to hold her son. “She said, ‘As long as you are here,’ recalled Sarah, who

Masks from pg 1 return the completed masks to the stadium. “If (Hopper, Tucker, and Hess) enjoy making them, I can pick up five kits at a time and that would make 150 masks,” said Luscian, who noted that the masks will be used at Lancaster General Hospital. Because Luscian was in charge of ordering supplies for the clinic in Lebanon, she became aware of the shortage months ago. “(Masks) have been hard to get all winter,” reported Luscian. “It was worrisome to be (working) without the masks.” She said that at one point workers were given surgical masks to wear for extended periods. “You would write the name and the date on (the mask) and put it in a paper bag and wear the same mask the next day,” she recalled. Those interested in sewing masks for Lancaster General Hospital are asked to email LGHealthCovidDonations@pennmedicine.upenn.edu. The hospital is also in need of items such as gloves, bleach, hand sanitizer, face, and eye shields, and surgical caps. More information about those donations can be found at www.lancastergeneralhealth.org.

is for a mask that covers the entire nose and extends back on the sides of the face. “They have a cup shape, and they have wire in the nose (area) to help them fit (snugly).” The masks are made from a fabric that uses a small weave. Luscian said that the pattern offers some benefits. “The nose piece is higher (on the face),” said Luscian, who added that the mask has loops that go around the ears to hold it in place. An additional feature is pockets in the sides of the fronts that can be filled with a piece cut from a new vacuum cleaner bag or other type of filter. Hopper soon recruited her friends Susan Tucker and Sue Hess, and the trio have created masks that they donated to Mount Hope and Pleasant View retirement communities, both in Manheim. Recently, Luscian picked up mask kits at the Barnstormers’ home stadium. “Penn Medicine is looking for volunteers to sew masks,” said Luscian, who noted that each kit includes instructions and enough fabric, filter paper, and wire to make 30 masks. Luscian delivered the kits to Hopper’s porch for her and her friends to work on. She will

Together, we can stop the spread. Are you in? Even as we make strides against COVID-19, it’s not time to let up. Following the proper guidelines remains critical — because that is still the most effective way to slow the spread of the coronavirus. • Stay home as much as you can • Practice social distancing — keep at least 6 feet between yourself and others • Wear a mask in public, covering your nose and mouth • Cover coughs and sneezes • Wash hands often — for at least 20 seconds For a quicker return to the things you love, we need everyone to be in this together. For your family. For your neighbors. For our entire community.
