Over the years, Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show founder and chairperson Marilyn Hobday received numerous requests from exhibitors for a spring show to be added into the calendar in addition to the traditional fall event. “Finally after enough prodding, I decided to go for it,” said Hobday with a laugh. “Our main focus for this first year is just getting a lot of quality art work,” Hobday continued. “It’s going to be a fun show. I think this will get people excited about the fall show, and I think they’re really going to complement each other.” The inaugural spring Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show will take place on Saturday, May 18, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Root’s Country Market,
705 Graystone Road, Manheim. Admission and parking are both free, and the outdoor show will take place rain or shine. Heart Of Lancaster from pg 1 Plenty of food and beverage options will be available for folks to purchase throughout the grounds of Root’s as well. Adding a spring show has certainly come with its challenges, but Hobday is optimistic that the new event will fill a void in Lancaster and hopefully be a hit with the community. “A lot of the spring shows that had been happening aren’t anymore,” she explained. “I’m hoping people will come and like it. We’ve just gotten a lot more artwork than I expected for it being the first spring show.” Promoting the importance of

Students at Kraybill Mennonite School in Mount Joy, including (from left) Adam Pobee, Grayson Halliday, Abigail Heisey, Anna Kneisley, and Ilse Ness, display items to be sold at the school’s annual benefit auction on May 10 and 11.
R037618
Organizers of the Kraybill Mennonite School (KMS) Benefit Auction invite the community to join in the fun on Friday and Saturday, May 10 and 11, at the school, 598 Kraybill Church Road, Mount Joy. Proceeds from the two-day event will go directly toward KMS and help to bridge the gap between tuition and actual school expenses. Auction chair Liz Heisey said that returning to a two-day format for last year’s auction proved to be a hit with the community, and $110,000 was raised for the school - a recordbreaking total at least in recent history for KMS. The silent auction will begin at 3:30 p.m. on May 10, which is also when the live auction preview and the Mother’s Day shop will open. A variety of gift baskets, jewelry, and other items suitable for moms will be available in the Mother’s Day shop for people to purchase just in time
for the holiday. “It’s been a neat (solution) for people realizing, ‘I don’t have anything for Sunday,’ and it takes care of that for them,” Heisey remarked. Bidding for the live auction will begin at 5 p.m. The highly anticipated class projects, eighth-grade projects, and teacher experiences will be up for bids at 6:30 p.m., followed by sports tickets and memorabilia at 7:45 p.m. and unique experiences at 8 p.m. Some of the noteworthy items up for bids include a gas grill, a lawn tractor, more than six handmade quilts, and getaway packages to cabins, cottages, and bed-and-breakfasts. A variety of food will be available to purchase beginning at 4 p.m., including an all-you-caneat pig roast dinner offered through 7:30 p.m. New menu choices will include cheesesteaks, tacos and burritos from an Elizabethtown-based restaurant food truck, along with a salad station with both entrée and side salads. Returning favorites will include

April 15 was the opening day of the conference, which attracted attendees from every county in Pennsylvania except Philadelphia, which has no townships. PSATS sponsors the statewide Road and Bridge Safety Improvement Contest each year in partnership with the Pennsylvania Highway Information Association (PHIA) and the state Department of Transportation (PennDOT) to recognize townships for their contributions of time and effort in making roads and bridges safer. Rapho Township was honored for completing a road realignment project to improve sight distance and reduce vehicle accidents. The township removed a sharp curve in North Colebrook Road between North Chiques Road and Cider Press Road. Property owners along the stretch had said for years that at times cars ran off the road into their yards. Numerous reportable accidents, including several involving overturned tractor trailers, made this one of the township’s most dangerous stretches of road. With the donation of a half-
acre of land from the owner of a preserved farm and the eventual approval of the county agricultural preserve board, the township was able to get to work. The project design involved removing, reconstructing, and relocating a portion of North Colebrook Road. It also called for the installation of drainage and stormwater management facilities, including roadside swales, storm pipes, and rain gardens. The road crew, with the help of contractors, worked many hours of overtime to be able to reopen the road in four months. The PSATS represents Pennsylvania’s 1,454 townships of the second class and is committed to preserving and strengthening township government and securing greater visibility and involvement for townships in the state and federal political arenas.

Nearly 500 children from impoverished sections of Accra, Ghana, are anticipated to attend the Arm of Hope summer camp where a group of volunteers from Hope Community Church and several other local churches will be serving in July. Arm of Hope is a Ghanaian-run ministry that operates weekly Bible clubs and an education sponsorship program for children in slum areas. The sixth annual Arm of Hope 5K on Saturday, May 18, at Hope Community Church, 1806 Harrisburg Ave., Mount Joy, is designed to raise funds to make it possible for any child to attend camp regardless of whether or not he or she already has a sponsor. Race organizer Greg Grove, who has traveled to Ghana several times to help with the camp, noted that race proceeds will also go toward meals, crafts, and games at the camp. Having the chance to sleep in a clean bed is one of the simple pleasures that the campers often express gratitude for, Grove said. The camp features one week for elementary school-age children and one week for high school-age students. Runners and walkers are invited to register for the Arm of Hope 5K in advance at https://hopechurchonline.org/5k or on race day beginning at 7:30 a.m. Participants will step off at 9 a.m. onto what Grove described as a flat and family-friendly course. Strollers and pets on leashes are also welcome to join in. Chip timing will be provided.

Rapho Township officials recently won the first-place roadway award in the annual Road and Bridge Safety Improvement Contest during the Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors’ Excellence Awards ceremony. Participating in the award presentation were (from left) Pennsylvania Highway Information Association managing director Jason Wagner; Rapho Township manager Sara Gibson, public works foreman Jim Fidler and chairman Lowell Fry; PennDOT deputy secretary for planning Jim Ritzman; and PSATS second vice president A.J. Boni.
Hand-carved wooden trophies from Ghana will be awarded to the top overall female and male finishers during a post-race awards ceremony. The top two female and male finishers in each five-year age category will receive their choice of a homemade baked good as an award. All participants will also be entered to win a variety of door prizes. Individuals who register online in advance will receive an email with an optional invitation to create a personal fundraising page. The idea is that registrants can share the page on social media or by email to raise additional funds for Arm of Hope, which will enable more students to attend camp. According to Grove, it costs approximately $50 to send a child to the camp. As an added incentive to raise funds, prizes - including tickets to a local amusement park, stainless steel tumblers, and hooded sweatshirts - will be awarded to participants who raise certain dollar amounts. Another way for area residents to help the children in Accra is by donating used cleats. Folks may bring used cleats along on race day or contact Grove at info@armofhope5k.org to set up another time to drop off donated cleats. The group that is traveling to Ghana in July will transport all of the cleats to Arm of Hope to be given to the children. To learn more about the Arm of Hope ministry or to sponsor a child, interested individuals may visit www.armofhopeinghana.org.

Farmers Market Prepares To Open
F038284
By Ann Mead Ash
To add some extra spice to the offerings at this year’s Lititz Farmers Market, Holly DeKarske, executive director of Venture Lititz, is lining up some activities along with the produce and other stands represented at the market. “We will have entertainment and events,” said DeKarske, who listed a free yoga demonstration, a children’s art project, and an athletic demonstration or activity courtesy of the Lititz recCenter as some of the planned highlights. Live music will be featured weekly. On Thursday, May 16, the
Lititz Farmers Market, which moved to Lititz Springs Park last year, will open for the 2019 season. As in 2018, the market will be situated just inside the park gates at 24 N. Broad St., Lititz, along the water near the visitors’ center, but on the same side as the Veterans of Foreign Wars building. This year, the market will be open each Thursday from 4:30 until 8 p.m. from mid-May through Oct. 17. The market will be open rain or shine. Vendors that DeKarske has lined up for this year’s market include those selling seafood; vegetables; fruit and flowers; organic meat, including poultry,

beef, and pork; and certified organic vegetables. In addition, there will be a gluten-free baker, a vendor selling honey and maple syrup, and a hummus company offering a variety of flavors of hummus and dips, along with a vendor selling fermented vegetables, pickled carrots, and more. DeKarske also hopes to have a vendor selling eggs, milk, and cheese. She also plans to have prepared foods sold by food trucks and vendors, and she hopes local retailers will come to the market to talk about their own businesses and the benefits of visiting Lititz. Along with more market vendors, DeKarske is looking for pop-up vendors to bring their handcrafted or other items to the venue on a limited basis. “(Vendors)
could come once to be a pop-up,” she said. “That will give (the market) some rotation.” DeKarske said that she works with a board to oversee the market, but she is still looking for a market master to take care of weekly needs. In addition to a market master, DeKarske would like to see more volunteers join in at the market each week. “We could use … people who want to talk about Lititz and the market and just be friendly,” she said, noting that people who love Lititz would be welcome to represent Venture Lititz at its booth. Readers who would like more information may visit www.lititz farmersmarket.com or search for “Lititz Farmers Market” on Facebook. Individuals who have questions may call 717-626-6332.

way that it presented a nonlinear look at marriage for the first time on stage,” described Johnson. Instead of following the previously standard chronological storyline, “Company” is made up of vignettes linked together by Bobby’s birthday celebration. “It’s an examination of marriage - what works and what doesn’t,” Johnson said. “It’s a very thoughtful, provocative musical.” Four of the five married couples that are Bobby’s friends in the SSC show also happen to be portrayed by real-life couples - a fun twist that cast members believe will add extra depth and delight for audiences. “It brings sides of marriage to life that you don’t see in everyday theater,” noted Kent Gable, who will portray Paul alongside his wife, Beth Gable, as Amy. “It’s incredibly relatable for anybody who is married or was married or is thinking about getting married,” commented Kevin Ditzler. He and his wife, Cara Ditzler, will play Peter and Susan, respectively. Other cast members include Jordyn McCrady as Sarah, Asher Johnson as Harry, Caleb Heckman as David, Chrissy Nickel as Jenny, Deb Good-Zeiner as Joanne, Layne Zeiner as Larry, Ali Fleming as Marta, Kara Hartman as Kathy, and Mikaela Krall as April. “Company” will be choreographed by Jill Gagliano, with music directed by Sharon Boyer. Performances are scheduled for Friday to Sunday, May 10 to 12, and Thursday to Sunday, May 16 to 19, on the Gallery Stage at the Marietta Center for the Arts, 133 W. Market St., Marietta. The plot revolves around Bobby, a 35-year-old bachelor who finds himself unable to fully commit to a long-term relationship - despite having multiple girlfriends. Josh Schwartz, who will be making his SSC debut portraying Bobby, explained that his character instead gets to see the ins and outs of marriage through all of his married friends. “He seems to live vicariously through his friends over the course of the show,” Schwartz said. “Most of the time he views marriage through a negative lens.” The original production, with book by Furth and music and lyrics by Sondheim, was nominated for numerous Tony Awards and won Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Score, Best Lyrics, Best Direction of a Musical, and Best Scenic Design. Director Jim Johnson noted that, when it opened in 1970, “Company” was groundbreaking as a musical for both its style and the way that it examined adult relationships. “It changed musical comedy in the

Barons Clinch Second Straight Section Crown By Eric G. Stark
It is safe to say the Barons’ baseball team is firing on all cylinders right now, and at just the right time with the postseason fast approaching. Last week Manheim played four games and outscored its opponents 39-3 to gain four wins. The Barons, which improved their record to 18-2, clinched the LancasterLebanon League Section Three title for the second straight year.
In the middle of the week, Manheim had two straight shutouts, pounding out 21 runs and 20 hits against Elco and Cocalico, respectively. On Tuesday, April 30, Manheim handed the Raiders a 10-0 loss. Curt Kroesen was 3-for-4 with 2 runs scored and one RBI. Cody Gibble was 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs and Nolan Weaver was 1-for-2 with 2 RBI’s. On the mound, Colton Book improved his record to 7-0, scattering two hits and gaining four strikeouts.
The Barons carried their hot bats into their next game on Wednesday, May 1 in an 11-0 blow out of Cocalico. Drew Mummau was 2-for-4 at the plate with 2 RBI’s. Mummau, who has done well in the closer role for Manheim, got the start and tossed a two-hitter, striking out four. Offensively, Book was 1-for-3 with 3 RBI’s and Cody Gibble 1-for-2 with two runs batted in. “The team is playing well and the bats seem to be getting hot at a good time,” head coach Jason Thompson said. “Our play this past week is a reflection of our guys playing well. Pitching has been solid all year and now the bats are starting to heat up.” Central started the week with a 6-2 victory against Garden Spot. Hunter Hess earned the win on the hill, fanning seven in the game. Mummau, who hit a home run, entered the fifth inning and earned the save, striking out two Spartan batters. Book also
homered in the contest. A side note, the hot bats are transferring over to the junior varsity, where the Barons’ JV won 15-3 against the Spartans. Manheim ended the week with another lopsided triumph, beating Northern Lebanon, 12-1 Friday. The Barons, who pounded out 14 hits, clinched the section title with the win. Hess gained the victory on the mound, fanning three Vikings. Book crushed another home run. Thompson, who took over as skipper this year from Matt Huber, knew the potential for a big season was there. “I knew we had the pieces to have a good season,” he said “Defense up the middle is always important, and our catcher, Garrett Bruckhart, and Drew Mummau at shortstop and Cody Gibble at second base and Curt Kroesen in center field have been great for us.” Thompson said early in the season they had a lot of pitchers, which he

said is a good thing, and they have thrown really well. Coming into the season, the Barons’ offense looked like it might struggle, but it is becoming a strength. “The weakest part, based on past numbers from last year, was the offense, but the guys have bought into our plan and approach at the plate and it is paying off,” Thompson said. “They are a great group of young men who love to play baseball and have good baseball IQ.” TRACK The boys’ track and field team played spoiler in denying Ephrata a section title, giving the Mountaineers’ their first loss of the year. The Barons pulled off an 80-70 victory Monday, April 29. Manheim was fueled by a four-win day by Will Rivers, who scored 20 key points, winning the long jump (22-1.25) and triple jump (45-4.25) in addition to track victories in the 100 (11.1) and 200 (23.2). The Barons were dominant in the field events, outpacing the Mounts, 53-10. Zach Reed captured two events, winning the high hurdles (15.5) and 300 hurdles (41.6). The Barons came up big in the field events, as Tyler Fahnestock took the shot put (40- 9.25) and discus (107-1), Christopher Shaw took the pole vault
(12-0) and Kade Kegarise won the javelin (148-2). The girls lost to a talented Ephrata squad 114-36. The Mounts claimed wins in 17 of the 18 events. The only event the Barons won was 400 meters, won by freshman Kylie Bannister (64.0). Tori Fahnestock was second in the 100 meter high hurdles, but ran a very good time of 16.9 and Laura Good ran a respectable 12.9 in the 100 meters for second. Even with the loss, Barons’ coach Ryan Kennedy is happy with the season the girls are having and excited about the future. With a strong group of freshmen this year and a talented group of eighth graders coming up next year Kennedy said the future is bright for girls’ track and field. “We got a pretty young team on the girls’ side,” he said. “We lose a couple throwers, but with the eighth graders coming up and a lot of freshmen, there is room to grow. Next year should be a banner year for us.” SOFTBALL Speaking of hot teams, the Lady Baron softball team rallied under the lights in Manheim Monday night (April 29) to beat Garden Spot, 3-2 in extra innings. Jordan Walter was superb in the circle. The talented junior helped her

MERCHANDISER - Manheim Central Edition including the hit that led to the winning run. The Lady Barons followed this up with two easy victories, beating Elco and Cocalico by identical 10-0 scores. Central collected 12 hits in the ELCO contest. The Raiders committed 5 errors in the 5-inning affair. On Senior Night against Cocalico, Walter fired a one-hitter with 14 strikeouts and smashed her third homer this spring. All-Star Codi Bollinger hit her seventh round-tripper of the season to wrap things up in six. Walter only yielded one hit and struck out 14. Manheim ended its week with a heart-breaking 3-2 loss to Northern Lebanon Friday night in Manheim. The loss drops the Lady Barons’ record to 14-5. The win improves Northern Lebanon’s record to 15-3 and gives them the edge for second place in Section Three. Both teams were virtually tied for second prior to the game. The teams have now split Photo by Stef Supplee two games this season (Manheim won Nate Reed runs the high hurdles for the Barons during their 1-0 on April 1). 80-70 Section Two win over host Ephrata last Monday. cause, knocking in the winning run when her single plated Maddy Barbush in the eighth inning. After scoring twice in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead, Walter was
cruising along, tossing a shutout when Garden Spot managed to plate two runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game at 2-2. Barbush went 2-for-3 with key hits,
Manheim took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth and held that lead until Spot rallied for two runs in the top of the sixth. TENNIS The boys’ tennis team lost 5-0 to Elizabethtown in the first round of District Three Class 3A team championship. Silas Eldeen suffered a 6-4, 6-4 loss. Andrew Rajaratnam lost a heartbreaker, winning the first set 6-3, before losing 6-7 (4) and 4-6. Hunter Winters lost 5-7, 1-6. In doubles, Jacob Bidelman and Anthony Stoltzfus took the first set 7-6 (0), but dropped the next two 5-7, 6-7 (5). Derren Bertin and Scott Westfield fell 3-6, 3-6. Eldeen, a senior, made Section Two All-Star team. VOLLEYBALL The Barons increased their win streak in Section Two to 35 straight games. That means the Barons, 11-0 on the season, have not dropped a game during a section match in more than two seasons. “We just go out and play the
games,” head coach Craig Dietrich said. “It wasn’t something we set as a goal. We just go with the flow. It is a neat accomplishment. Mason (Nissley), Ben (Wolford) and Brandyn (Musser) might think about it, because they have been around longer during the streak.” Manheim, which captured its third straight section title, cruised past Elizabethtown and Ephrata, by - yep - you guessed it, 3-0 scores. The section crown was clinched as the Barons held off the Bears 25-19, 25-19 and 25-14 on Tuesday, April 30. Jeremiah Zimmerman posted 35 assists and Nissley had 14 kills and five digs. Musser contributed with two blocks. “Zimmerman played well for us, as did Musser and Wolford,” Dietrich said. “We executed very well out of the middle. They couldn’t stop us.” Dietrich also noted that Darien Colbum, a junior, is doing a nice job with digs and is working hard. “It is nice to see guys working hard and getting results,” Dietrich said.

Central defeated the Mountaineers 25-1, 25-14 and 25-20. Nissley played an all-around game to fill the stat sheet, collecting five aces, 15 kills, and two blocks. Wolford added two blocks. Blake Wagner chipped in three digs and Zimmerman dished out 20 assists. For Zimmerman, a first year starter, his progress as a setter is impressive. “For a sophomore, he is ahead of schedule,” Dietrich said. “He’s doing exactly what the coaches are asking of him. He listens and is performing well. “It’s like a quarterback in the NFL. If you don’t have a quarterback you aren’t going to win. If you don’t have a setter, you aren’t going to win. Like Ben (Wolford), he gets overlooked. We have shining sports cars with Nissley and Musser and you don’t truly appreciate, unless you watch closely, what these other guys like Wolford and Zimmerman do. We have lots of team players, and that’s a recipe for success. No one person is looking for glory. If you focus on team goals the ‘me goals’ will happen.”

Gala from pg 17 Currently, Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, according to www.alz.org. The Alzheimer’s Association funds research into the disease, and it also offers support groups for people with the disease and for their caregivers, provides online message boards through ALZConnected, and hosts a free, nationwide helpline that offers information and referrals. The Grand Purple Gala was created by Julie Ehrgood and Frazier,
both of whom have family members with Alzheimer’s. They were joined by additional women whom the disease has affected in some way. Frazier’s personal experience with Alzheimer’s came from her grandfather and her work as a nurse in memory care facilities. “I wanted to do something that had an impact,” Frazier said. “I did a lot of education with families. It’s an exhausting disease.” Relating an incident during which her

grandfather slipped out of the house tremendously underdressed for the cold weather, she added, “It’s scary.” According to the Alzheimer’s Association, as folks age, some forgetfulness is normal. When memory loss disrupts everyday life, however, that is indicative that Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia may be developing. A decline in thinking and reasoning skills is also a red flag, and folks should see their doctor. Group member Mary Read has dubbed herself an Alzheimer’s ambassador, as she has been dealing with the early onset of these symptoms. Frazier noted that the disease is such that the diagnosis cannot be confirmed until after death. In living people, diagnosis is made based on cognitive testing. “It’s a very grueling process,” Frazier said. Information about Alzheimer’s disease will be available at the Grand Purple Gala. Organizing a successful race takes a village of enthusiastic volunteers, and the members of the Elizabethtown Rotary Club are all set to provide an abundance of cheer for the annual Mother’s Day 5K on Sunday, May 12. Registration and packet pickup will open at 1:30 p.m., with the race stepping off at 3 p.m. in the Veterans Grove area of Masonic Village, 1 Masonic Drive, Elizabethtown. According to Rotarian and event organizer Dan Brill, the event is a community celebration of all mothers. All mothers in attendance, whether participants or spectators, will receive a complimentary flower. “Our goal is to honor moms in a healthy and fun way on their day,” Brill said. “We understand it can be a busy day
and not everyone can fit it in their schedule. We do keep to a strict schedule and start promptly at 3 p.m. and have all the awards and prizes handed out by 4:15 p.m. so families can still make it to dinner with Mom.” “Last year we had over 100 participants for the first time, and we hope to build on that again this year,” stated Brill. Brill noted that anyone is welcome to take part in the race - regardless of age - and walkers are encouraged to participate as well. Chip timing will be provided. The course winds through the Masonic Village campus, with the start and finish lines at the Veterans Grove area. One water station will be set up along the route, and interested individuals may view the course map at www.elizabethtown See Mom pg 19
