A Joy-Filled Day At The Movies BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Abigail Reed (left), Tyler Zahora (center) and Gracelyn Swarr recently won a Sertoma essay contest.

Sertoma Essay Winners Announced ulie Wash, grade six English language arts teacher at Manheim Central Middle School, has a talented bunch of writers as students. Three of them were recently selected as winners of a writing contest sponsored by Sertoma. About 100 students from the school entered the contest, and Abigail Reed, Tyler Zahora and Gracelyn Swarr were chosen as the winners, Wash said. The students will be recognized and will receive a plaque at the Sertoma Club in Manheim on Thursday, June 2. “The Sertoma Club has sponsored

this contest as long as I have been in the district - 25 years,” Wash noted, adding that although the theme has been consistent, what students choose to write about differs each year. “It has been interesting to see the varied approaches to the same theme, ‘What does freedom mean to me?’ Over the years, the topics have ranged from abolishing slavery to women in professional sports.” All three students noted that writing about something that mattered to them personally made it easier to complete the essay. “A lot of the things I included in my essay are things that I personally believe in,” said Gracelyn. “I wrote about

equal rights, freedom of religion, voting rights and being able to make your own decisions for your health.” While Tyler’s essay focused on topics ranging from the Revolutionary War to the importance of people believing in themselves, Abigail wrote about important role models in history who had to fight for their freedom. “It also explains how I don’t have to fight for my freedoms, because of how courageous they were,” she said. Each of the students expressed excitement and surprise at finding out they had won the contest. “I was extremely surprised when I heard my name being called on

the announcements,” Gracelyn remarked. “I never thought I was going to win. … A few days before, I had laughed at the thought of winning. So many other kids tried hard, too. I feel honored that they chose my essay out of the many others that were written.” Wash noted she’s very impressed with the winners and their writing skills, adding, “I have many excellent writers this year, and these three embraced the topic.” Tyler offered advice for other students who enter essay contests, noting, “I only wrote what I thought, and I ended up winning. Writing what you think is easier than it sounds.” See Essay pg 2

For parents of children with special needs, going to the movies can be overwhelming. The darkness, sounds and crowds can cause anxiety and turn a fun outing into a source of tension. Colleen Ginder understands the issue firsthand. As the parent of a 5-year-old son, Nolan, who has autism, Colleen wanted to provide an opportunity for other families to bring their children to the movies. She arranged for a sensory-friendly movie outing in April at Penn Cinema in Lititz. More than 100 people from 27 families throughout Lancaster County, Lebanon County and Hershey attended a showing of “Sing 2.” “(Nolan) had never been to the movies, and I figured if he has never been, then probably some of his peers have never been either,” said Colleen, who lives in Manheim. “I felt that this event

Friends In Action To Mark 30 Years offered $50,000 in matching funds to any new donors giving to FIA’s Ukrainian refugee relief efforts in Moldova before Wednesday, May 25, at www.FIAintl.org/ukrainian -refugee-support/. FIA formed in 1992 to address physical challenges facing international workers serving among the least-reached people groups in Papua New Guinea. While the missionaries were equipped to learn languages, plant churches, and develop ministries, they lacked the construction and engineering knowledge required to build a house, source a water supply, or complete other tasks related to reaching the people and living among them. During its existence, FIA’s impact has expanded to include assisting over 2,600 missionaries to reach indigenous people from 80 language groups in remote locations in six countries. The organization regularly supports efforts in Nicaragua, Vanuatu, Bolivia, Moldova, and the western countries of Africa. Through Water and Sanitation Health (WASH) initiatives, COVID-19 relief, refugee aid, community transformation projects, and life-skills training, FIA helps missionaries minister to hundreds of thousands of people each year. Construction of airstrips, hurricane-resistant homes, bridges, wells, and roads, as well as machinery repair and supply delivery, enable international workers to stay longer, travel farther, and make greater impacts. Through partnerships with Messiah College’s Collaboratory

and Engineering departments, as well as local churches and individuals, more than 1,100 volunteers have taken part in frontline Great Commission efforts. Many blue-collar workers, students, and families enabled the completion of more than 1,600 projects during the more than 175 trips hosted by FIA. Teams have assisted outreach efforts in more than 58 countries in some of the most remote regions of the globe. Volunteers use their abilities and talents to serve those on the frontline, so missionaries

can focus on sharing the Gospel. FIA is backed by more than 5,000 local and global prayer supporters, financial supporters, and volunteers. More than 80% of FIA’s headquarters staff volunteer their time or are supported by private funding, so more donated money goes directly to the people around the world who need it most. FIA has been named “top-rated” by GreatNonprofits, an organization that allows people to share stories on its website about their experi-

This year marks the 30th anniversary of ministry for FIA, a nonprofit located in Middletown and focused on assisting missionaries in areas of limited infrastructure. To celebrate this milestone, FIA will host a free Community Fun Day at its headquarters, 3950 E. Harrisburg Pike, Middletown, on Saturday, May 14, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Children may participate in a “passport” tour of FIA’s six countries of service; the tour will include a bounce house, a candy cannon, balloon animals, a reptile show, and a barrel train. People of all ages are invited to enjoy a fusion demonstration, a live band, a ministry partner expo, and construction machinery. Free pork barbecue sandwiches will be provided to the first 500 attendees. Food will be available for a fee from additional food trucks. In the case of rain, activities will be moved indoors. For more information about the Fun Day event, visit www.FIAintl.org/community -fun-day/. FIA has additional opportunities for the community to join in celebrating its milestone anniversary through praying and giving. Prayer requests from FIA’s countries of service can be found in FIA’s quarterly newsletter, “The Challenge,” which can be read at www.FIAintl.org or requested by calling 717-546-0208. Readers who would like to give to FIA’s efforts can take part in a special matching funds opportunity. Desiring to grow FIA’s impact over the next 30 years, a supporter has

would give families like mine an opportunity to attend an event that we would normally shy away from either because of sensory issues, financial concerns or fear of judgment from people who may not understand our specific needs.” Despite never having planned an event like this before, and with the original date rescheduled due to a snowstorm, Colleen said the day was very well-received. “It went exactly as I had hoped that it would,” she stated. “The kids were able to walk around, sing, talk, sit on the floor, play and just generally do exactly what they needed to do to feel comfortable watching the movie. The parents as well were able to be present knowing that their children were in a safe environment to be exactly who they needed to be. We were all there for the same reason, and you could feel the support and acceptance in the room.” Colleen said her goal in creating the event was to make it as accessible to as many families as possible, including keeping the cost low. “I know for myself, we have never taken Nolan to the movies. Part of that was because I couldn’t see spending the money on taking our entire family out and then having to face the very real possibility that we would have to leave early or even before the movie even started because of sensory issues or just not being able to follow social norms that are easy for some but not all of us,” she stated. She approached Tom Zern at John A. Zern & Sons Beverage Distributor in Manheim, who donated toward the cost of the theater rental and also provided soda and ice for the event. A family member of

A Coat Of Many Colors BY CATHY MOLITORIS

“You will never get bored watching this show,” said Gerson Malave, describing “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” The musical will be performed at Susquehanna Stage, 133 W. Market St., Marietta, from Friday, May 13, through Sunday, May 22. The show is a youth and teen production and features a cast of 37 students from the region. Gerson, a senior at Donegal High School, portrays Joseph. “This is an uplifting and fun show,” he said. Katie Pilsner, a senior at Manheim Central High School, plays the Narrator. She noted that the story of the musical is taken from the Bible. “The story is about Joseph and how he gets this fabulous coat that makes his brothers jealous,” she explained. “They ultimately end up selling him into slavery, and Joseph goes through tremendous obstacles, but he eventually overcomes them.”

Katie said playing the Narrator is challenging, but fun. “This is my favorite show, and it’s my dream role,” she stated. “I’ve loved this show since I was a kid.” Written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, “Joseph” is told entirely in song, which makes it a unique experience for the performers, said Elliott Evans, who portrays the Pharaoh and Jacob. The character of the Pharaoh is especially challenging, he said, because it’s performed as an Elvis tribute. “I watched a lot of videos of Elvis and studied him to get the part just right,” noted Elliott, a ninthgrader at York Catholic High School. Like Katie, he says the show is his favorite musical. “The music is so catchy,” he remarked. “There are so many different styles of music in this show - country, disco, pop, jazz.” For Gerson, playing the title character has prompted him to stretch his acting muscles. “There are very emotional parts in this show, like the

song ‘Close Every Door,’ when Joseph is in prison, and then it immediately goes into a very upbeat, fast-paced song, ‘Go, Go, Go Joseph,’” he said. “It’s been challenging to be able to make that emotional switch quickly.” Katie noted that the show features some deep themes that will get audiences thinking. “This show is about family and love and redemption. It’s overcoming everything that’s thrown at you,” she commented. “At one point, the Narrator sings, ‘And it could be you,’ and I think anyone who watches this show or reads the Bible story can put themselves in Joseph’s shoes and can real-

The annual FUN Fest will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the organization, 412 S. Angle St., and will feature a variety of activities for people of all ages. “May is National Foster Care Month, and we are holding (the event) in honor of that,” explained Kristin Meeks, FUN program supervisor. “It’s an opportunity to possibly recruit families and bring awareness of what we do as an agency.” Headquartered in Muncy, Families United Network was founded in 1996 as a private foster care provider. The agency has multiple locations throughout the state; the Mount Joy office has been in operation for about 20 years. This is the first time FUN Fest is being held since 2019, when it paused for two years due to the pandemic. “We’re really excited to bring this back,” Meeks noted. “If you have kids, it’s a fun day to come out and have some nice family time together.” The festivities will feature a bounce house, free food, crafts, prizes and a variety of vendors, including Board and Brush, Paparazzi and ThirtyOne Gifts. Information tables will also be set up to showcase the services of FUN. While the event is free, dona-

tions will be accepted for the organization’s mission. “Any proceeds we make from this event will be used for our foster parent event for our families, which is also held in May,” said Holly Tanner, resource parent specialist for FUN. Tanner noted that the event has been well-received in the past. “Some families come for half an hour. Some come for two hours,” she said. “There is something for everybody to do, and it’s all free.” Tanner emphasized that the day is all about family - having fun but also promoting the agency’s work. “It’s a nice opportunity for families ... to see we who we are,” she remarked. “We’ve been in the community a long time, but many people don’t know our name. We’re right here in your backyard, and we want people to know about us and how they can make a difference in a child’s life.” She encourages everyone to attend FUN Fest, adding, “Bring your children; bring your neighbors. Get everybody out of the house and come out for a fun day of kid-focused activities.” Vendors are still being accepted for FUN Fest, and people are invited to set up tables of yard sale items. For more information, call the Families United Network office at 717-492-9338. For more information on Families United Network, visit www.families4kids.org.

Concert Will Mark 300th Anniversary “Music is celebratory. All you have to do is look at Psalms - ‘Make a joyful noise,’” said Portia Brian, a member of Donegal Presbyterian Church. That’s just what the church will do to mark its 300th anniversary. A concert will be held at the church, 1891 Donegal Springs Road, Mount Joy, on Sunday, May 22, beginning at 6:45 p.m. Sponsored by Project 300, a group of people who have spent the past year highlighting the church’s long and colorful history, the concert is a way to mark the church’s longevity, said Debra Ronning, who is helping to organize the concert. “This is the culminating concert of our 300th year celebration,” she noted. “It will feature a variety of music and many styles - vocalists, saxophone, piano, flute, clarinet and more.”

The Stone Soup Band, composed of members of the church, will perform Americana and folk music in the narthex, followed by the full concert in the sanctuary. A featured piece will be a selection composed by local musician and educator Ralph Lehman. Lehman wrote “The Witness Tree” for a chamber orchestra and he will debut a new arrangement for an instrumental quartet at the concert. The piece’s title refers to a tree once located on the church grounds, where church members met in 1777 when George Washington sent a message asking for men to muster and travel to Philadelphia for the Revolutionary War effort. Other concert participants will include soloist Alison Mekeel and instrumentalists Rick Nye and Sara Male. A hymn written by the Rev. Larry Chottiner and harmonized by Linda Mains espe-

ENB Offers “Pigs In The Park” Program Parents with young children visited the Lancaster Barnstormers’ Fan Fest a bit early on April 16 for an opportunity to teach their children a lesson about the importance of saving money. It was part of the Ephrata National Bank (ENB) Pigs in the Park program designed to turn little ones into lifelong savers. During the event, ENB hid hundreds of piggy banks within the stadium for children to find before gameday activities began. Any child ages 2 to 12 who found a piggy bank was invited to take it to an ENB branch and have money deposited into an ENB Super Saver savings account in his or her name. Children were able to keep the banks and may continue saving

Jacob Moyer and his one ace. John Wenger finished with 14 digs. Central was able to avenge one of their earlier losses on May 3rd, using wins of 26-24, 25-20 and 27-25 for a 3-0 sweep over Elizabethtown. Oostdam (nine kills, eight blocks) left his mark on the game as did 27 assists and two blocks from Musser. Wenger finished with 14 digs. BASEBALL The wins keep coming for the baseball team with victories over Cocalico and ELCO running the Barons streak to eight straight. Jared Murray picked up the win for four innings on the hill against Cocalico with Cayde Connelly covering the final three innings. Nolan Book cracked a two-run, fifth inning double to give him three RBIs for the game. May 2nd brough ELCO to town with Manheim needing only five innings to collect the 13-3 win. Connelly got the start this time and earned the win for four solid innings of work. Cole Lawhorne covered the final inning for Central. Book enjoyed another threeRBI game but it was Ky Watson leading the way. Watson finished with three hits and five-RBIs, including a three run double in the second that helped Manheim take control early. SOFTBALL The softball team completed their third four game winning streak of the season recently. This version kicked off on April 25th with a win over Garden Spot with victories over Cocalico, Lancaster Catholic and ELCO following. The April 27th win over the

Eagles lasted just three innings with Manheim cruising to a 16-0 triumph. Kayleigh Detz connected for first and third inning home runs on her way to five-RBIs. Brianna Mylin and Miranda Ober each added three-RBIs with Ober’s lone hit a three-run shot in the third. Gabby Wettig collected the easy three-inning win. Central picked up an easy forfeit win over Lancaster Catholic on April 30th, allowing the Barons to turn their attention to a May 2nd clash with ELCO. That additional attention led to an 11-0 win with Wettig allowing just two hits over the five innings. Emma Damon ended up a home run short of the cycle leaving her with a three-hit, two-RBI game as a consolation. Riley Hostetter needed just two hits to push three runs across. TENNIS The boy’s tennis season came to a close with the completion of the Lancaster-Lebanon League Flight Tournament on May 2nd. Luke Horst posted the lone win, topping Octorara’s Avi Vik in the first round of the flight two bracket before falling in the quarterfinals. Manheim Central’s other singles player, Ben Ginder, dropped his opening round match to Cocalico’s Adam Good. Ginder and Horst teamed for a spot in the number one doubles bracket but dropped their opening round match to Hempfield’s Cooper Lehman and Eric Jordan. Rodney Sauder and Owen Patten had the unfortunate pleasure of facing the eventual champion in the flight two doubles bracket in

Elizabethtown’s Luke Risser and Jack Nyveldt, with Sauder and Patten falling short. Manheim’s final L-L entry was in number three doubles where Cole Lubeskie and Landon Statts dropped out after a loss to Lancaster Mennonite’s Zach Abel and Yoseph Chang.

Meet Eden! This senior lady is available to be adopted from the Pennsylvania SPCA Lancaster Center. She came to the shelter as a stray and now is longing for a new life of luxury. Eden still has plenty of energy and enjoys walks and playing fetch in the yard. This lovely gal doesn’t like other dogs, but she adores every human she meets. Eden is hoping to find her furever home soon because shelter life doesn’t suit her. If interested in adopting Eden, call the Pennsylvania SPCA Lancaster Center at 717-917-6979 or email lancaster@pspca.org.

that like to herd with their agility and intelligence. - Australian shepherd: Another herding dog, Aussies have a natural focus on their owners and are bred to work with those owners in challenging environments. - Doberman pinschers: Dobermans are smart and attentive to their owners. They have traditionally been employed as guard dogs and require careful training and socialization to be tolerant of strangers. - German shepherds: These workhorses serve many different roles because of their affinity for learning tasks. As with Dobermans, look for a wellsocialized German shepherd to avoid anxiety and wariness of people. - Poodles: Poodles are popular because they do not shed much, but also because they are intelligent, obedient and versatile. - Golden retrievers: Golden retrievers are not known as a family dog for nothing. Goldens are very intelligent and amiable, and they often will go to great lengths to

please their owners. Labrador retrievers also take to training well and are very affectionate. - Papillon: Smaller dogs are often viewed as stubborn or independent. However, papillons are incredibly smart and trainable and are naturally focused. The pet advisement site

K9 of Mine warned that some of the smartest, most trainable dogs may not necessarily be the easiest to live with. They can get bored easily and destroy things around the house if they cannot keep their minds occupied. This is a factor to consider when selecting a breed as well.

Meet Ben! This 6-month-old boy is available for adoption from the Pennsylvania SPCA Lancaster Center after finding himself at the shelter again. Ben takes some time to warm up to new people, but once he does, he is incredibly loving; his favorite activity is headbutting and begging for scratches. He might be a little spicy at times, but he enjoys the finer things in life, like sunbathing, batting around toys, and harassing his people! If interested in adopting Ben, call the Pennsylvania SPCA Lancaster Center at 717-917-6979 or email lancaster@pspca.org.

keep companion animals safe. When prospective pet owners begin looking for a new dog, one of the first thoughts that may come to mind is trainability and whether certain breeds are more easy to train than others. The pet food manufacturers at Honest Kitchen indicated that breed is just one of many factors that can make a difference in how easily a dog will be trained. For example, dogs that are food-motivated and enjoy being around people may be more easily trained than those without such traits. How the animal was bred, raised and socialized can also play a part. The American Kennel Club reported that certain dogs are more willing to comply with owner requests, while others are bred to work independently and may be less likely to immediately respond to commands from their owners. Though there is no guarantee any dog will take to training, the following are some breeds that are generally considered training-friendly.

Gina Yoder, one of the cochairs of the Lititz Historical Foundation (LHF) Lititz Spring Into History Festival, has fond memories of the inaugural event in 2019. “We held the first one, and it was so successful, we decided to duplicate it,” said Yoder, who, along with brothers Melvin and Paul Miller, is organizing the 2022 event. Paul noted that the 2019 event ran smoothly. “People couldn’t believe it was our first one,” he said, adding that seniors appreciated the compact setup and the ease in visiting the displays. After a hiatus due to the pandemic, this year’s LHF Lititz Spring Into History Festival will be held on Saturday, June 4, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will take place inside the 1792 Johannes Mueller House and throughout the Mary Oehme Gardens, located at 137-145 E. Main St., Lititz. “It’s a one-day living history event,” said Yoder, who pointed out that the festival transforms the Mueller House and

all the gardens into an 18thcentury artisan market green, where artisans dressed in period clothing sell their handmade items. “More than 20 artisans are coming,” said Paul, who noted that among those will be a milliner, who makes hats; a blacksmith; a whitesmith, who makes Colonial lamps and utensils; soap makers; and an herbalist. “We will have a Conestoga wagon, weather-permitting,” said Paul, noting that Art Reist will bring the wagon and that Art’s son will be the blacksmith. Additional artisans will demonstrate tin smithing, chair caning, bobbin lace weaving, tape looming, pottery, and wood utensil carving. Flax fiber experts will be on-site, as will members of the Lancaster Spinners and Weavers Guild. “Everyone will be in period clothing,” noted Paul. “There will be close to 50 of us in period clothing, which makes it really fun,” added Yoder. Visitors will have the chance to learn to play old-fashioned games like graces, hopscotch,
