The 31st annual Lancaster Senior Games, held May 6 to 10, had another record-breaking year for attendance with a total of 1,004 participants and more than 335 volunteers. According to organizer Lisa Paulson of the Lancaster County Office of Aging, this was the first time that participation numbers broke the 1,000 mark. “People are having fun, and they just love doing it,” remarked committee member Sandy Hess in regards to the record-breaking participation. “The whole idea is to get anybody 55 and up to keep moving. And it’s not just physical; it’s about using your mind, too.” The bulk of the events took place at Spooky Nook Sports, with shuttle buses running to events held at other locations, including the Lancaster YMCA, Amos Herr Park, Hempfield High School, Evergreen Golf Course, Leisure Lanes, See Senior Games pg 8

Its primary mission is promoting good stewardship of the land within the Chiques Creek Watershed in order to protect the Chiques Creek and preserve it for future generations. The Chiques Creek Watershed covers approximately 126 square miles of area beginning in Lebanon County and extending 31 miles to the creek’s confluence with the Susquehanna River near Marietta Borough. Rock-N-Glow 5K from pg 1 Chamber coordinator Kelly Lauver is also excited about the addition of a Kids Color Fun Run. The half-mile run will step off at 7:30 p.m. Children ages 5 to 12 are welcome to sign up for the fun run in advance at https://runsignup.com/Race/PA /Manheim/RockNGlow5K. Proceeds from the Kids Color Fun Run and student-led activities will support MCHS’ involvement with the Herren Project, a nationwide initiative led by former NBA basketball player Chris Herren to educate students on the dangers of substance abuse and encourage positive life decisions. Herren spoke to students at MCHS last year about reaching his lifelong dream to play in the NBA only to lose it all to a struggle with drug and alcohol addiction. “We really want to continue that important conversation in our community,” noted Lauver. The 5K race will begin promptly at 9 p.m. Runners and walkers will once again be treated to live music and light shows along the race route. Organizers encourage every participant and spectator to add to the energetic atmosphere by dressing head to toe in clothes and gear that will glow. The 5K course will include North Main Street, West Stiegel Street, South Hazel Street, East High Street, North Laurel Street, Park View Drive, Lake View Drive, Red Rose Drive, North Linden Street, and East Adele Avenue. Portions of those roads will be closed to vehicular traffic from approximately 8 p.m. to midnight. Post-race festivities will include an awards presentation and more music, food, and dancing. When 170 Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) seniors gather with their family members, their friends, and faculty members in the school’s Berger Gymnasium on Thursday, May 23, at 7 p.m. to graduate, Class of 2019 valedictorian Sebastian Klemmer and salutatorian Ben Ryan will be prepared to give speeches. Klemmer is the son of Edwin Klemmer and Karen Mertzman, both of Lancaster. At LCHS, Klemmer has been involved in the music program, serving as student director of the marching band during his senior year. He has served as president of Tri-M Music Honor Society and National Honor Society (NHS), and he is a member of the Quiz Bowl team. Klemmer competes with the cross-country team, and he is a member of the track team. In the fall, Klemmer plans to attend Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., where he currently plans to major in international political economy. Klemmer noted that with the first draft of his speech completed, he plans to discuss the achievements of his classmates. “This isn’t about me,” he said. “It’s an address I am giving, but I should not be the topic.” With that in mind, Klemmer plans to laud the members of the LCHS Class of 2019 for how far they have come. “I want to emphasize how we all have done a lot of work and some incredible things,” said Klemmer. “I (will) encourage (my classmates) to keep moving forward (in that spirit) … to keep bringing their A game as they go to college, trade school or wherever.” Klemmer is thankful that he had the opportunity to attend LCHS. “I am glad I went to LCHS because of the incredible teachers and coaches I have had,” he reflected. “They really do care, and they give their best efforts in helping me to improve.” Ryan is the son of Timothy and Gayle Ryan of Manheim. At school, he has served as captain of Quiz Bowl and BrainBusters. He was recently elected Class of 2019 prom king by his classmates. He has also served as vice president of NHS. He is a member of the French National Honor Society. Ryan has played soccer throughout his time at LCHS, and he was named an All-Star during his senior year. Outside school, he has played rec league basketball. In the fall, Ryan plans to attend the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., where he will study economics and pre-law. Upon completion of his studies at West Point, he will begin serving his country as an active-duty officer in the United States Army. In his speech, Ryan said he will congratulate his classmates on all the hard work they have completed in the last four years. “It is an accomplishment to be where we are,” he said. “It has been a great four years.” Ryan also plans to thank those who have helped him and his classmates to reach this moment. “I want to thank everyone for what they have done for

me and for the school,” he said. Ryan noted that his years at LCHS have been meaningful to him. “I love LCHS because it’s a big family, and that sets us up well for the future,” he said. “I love the communal aspect of Lancaster Catholic,” he added, noting that he knows most of his fellow classmates and has close bonds with many of them. He also complimented the LCHS faculty. “The teachers are very supportive,” he said. “I haven’t had one I didn’t like.” A fixture in Lancaster since 1928, LCHS strives to provide education rooted in faith and tradition. bills on time, and it requested that a few pieces be displayed in a corner of the showroom and that Donald be allowed to sell them with the tractors and lawn mowers. Lester agreed. That year, Donald sold 295 pieces, and the following year saw sales of 525 appliances. The sales numbers continued to climb as years went by. In 1972, Donald and his wife, Elnora, bought L.H. Brubaker from Lester, and it became solely an appliance store. Counting the two Franks, the store had 11 employees. The following year, Donald’s oldest son, Donald L. Frank Sr., joined the family business. In the fall of 1974, L.H. Brubaker moved into a new store that sat beside the original location on Strasburg Pike. The facility at 340 Strasburg Pike, Lancaster, continues to be the corporate headquarters and main showroom. The next several decades saw notable expansion of the business. Water treatment products and service were added in 1985. Showrooms were opened at 5303 E. Trindle Road, Mechanicsburg, in 2004 and across from Park City at 896L Plaza Blvd., Lancaster, in 2012. Across the three stores, 72 employees currently work for L.H. Brubaker, selling and servicing an extensive selection of high-end, built-in, and professional-quality kitchen appliances from Wolf, Sub-Zero, Thermador, Bosch, and Bertazzoni. Appliances in a range of price points are available from GE, Samsung, Frigidaire, and KitchenAid. L.H. Every appliance purchase is backed by our own factorytrained installation and courteous service specialists.” Members of the public are invited to celebrate with the Franks and the employees of L.H. L.H. Brubaker Appliances and Water Treatment, with three locations in Lancaster and Mechanicsburg, is celebrating its 87th anniversary. In 1932, Lester H. Brubaker opened a store providing the sales and service of farm equipment in Strasburg. At that time, the only appliances offered were large International freezers used mostly by farmers. In 1960, Donald H. Frank joined the sales and parts department at L.H. Brubaker. Shortly thereafter, Lester permitted General Electric (GE) to display appliances in the showroom. The first year L.H. Brubaker offered appliances, only 90 sold, but those sales were thanks to Donald. Considering appliance sales not to be a good business decision, Lester informed GE that he had decided to get out of the appliance business. GE countered with a compliment, saying that the manufacturer never liked to end business relationships with a reputable company that paid its

Buchmiller Park, Overlook Golf Course, and Rocky Springs Lanes. Darts, bocce, and cornhole were among the most popular events, with more than 300 registrants each. Hess, who has been volunteering on the Senior Games committee for more than 20 years, noted that organizers adjust the event offerings from year to year according to what people seem to be interested in. “Every year we tweak something to make it work a little better,” said Hess. For instance, bridge is no longer offered due to waning interest, but now there is a pinochle tournament. Sometimes event demonstrations are scheduled into the week to test the waters before adding something to the official competition list for the next year. New additions for 2019 included ladder golf, a Nook exercise sampler, and Pilates, as well as a rock climbing demonstration with an opportunity to climb. Volunteers begin meeting monthly in September each year to plan and continue the planning process right up until the events launch in May. “To me it’s rewarding, and I think it is to

everybody who’s doing it or we wouldn’t be doing it, because we all volunteer,” said Hess. Lititz resident Carl Risser was among the dozens of individuals gathered under sunny skies at Amos Herr Park in Landisville on May 7 for the horseshoes competition. Risser earned first place for the 80- to 84-year-old division and also participated in bocce, ladder golf, shuffleboard, basketball, and the soccer penalty kick. “I love all of the games,” said Risser. “I love water volleyball too, but they don’t have that yet.” Formerly of New Holland, Risser said that it was when he moved into Brethren Village in 2007 that he really became active in recreational sports. He does a lot of running, goes to the exercise room on a daily basis, and has been participating in the Senior Games for at least eight years. Alan Ruby of Akron and Barry Lynch of Lancaster took first and second place, respectively, in the 85- to 89-year-old division for horseshoes. This was not the first time that Ruby and Lynch had contended against each other for the championship in

Neither Ruby nor Lynch practices horseshoes throughout the year, but they both work out regularly at a local athletic club where they are part of the Silver Sneakers program. Ruby remarked, “I just love the people here and the fellowship that we have. It’s all about the people.” To learn more about the Lancaster County Senior Games, readers may visit www.Lanc SeniorGames.org.

Barons Perfect in Three Straight League Seasons By Eric G. Stark

Seeing is believing, and Craig Dietrich has seen enough to start believing. The Barons’ volleyball team has won every match by 3-0 scores in Section Two of the Lancaster-Lebanon League this year. They’ve been keen on perfection not allowing a league opponent to win a game in 12 matches. They won every match in sectionplay by 3-0 scores last year and the year before that as well. That’s 108-0 in their last 108 games.

Darien Colburn bumps a Spartan serve for the Barons during their 3-0, Section Two victory at Garden Spot last Tuesday.

Jeremiah Zimmerman makes a set for the Barons in their 3-0 Section Two win over Garden Spot last Tuesday in New Holland.

“I don’t think it can be summed up in a few words, but it is a pretty amazing accomplishment to not lose a game in a section match in three years,” Dietrich said about winning a third straight Section Two title and the section win streak. “We have a mentality that the current match, the current game, is the most important right now.” Manheim lost a lot of good players from last year’s squad, which finished as runner-up for league, district and state championships, but the team is No. 1 in the district rankings. It also has another section title and is back in the league playoffs.

“If you told me at the beginning of the season we’d be undefeated in section play,” Dietrich said, “I’d say I’ll believe it when I see it.” He’s a believer now. He started to believe when his team went to Western Pennsylvania for a tournament with some elite programs and the Barons more than held their own. They played two defending state champions in pool play. Didn’t win but played well. Manheim also played well against Warwick, the Section One winner in the L-L League, and Central York. Dietrich and his squad came back from North Allegheny knowing they could be a good team. They went 6-0 in section-play to

start this season and the second half of the year took care of itself, Dietrich said. The Barons’ confidence grew. Though young, the Barons have a “Big Three” of notable senior players that provide skill and leadership. When the pressure mounts in games, Ben Wolford, Brandyn Musser and Mason Nissley have shown a “jump on our backs” mentality, Dietrich said. These seniors have bailed out the younger players, but the coach can see a passing of the torch. “If we get one or two contributions from the younger guys and the seniors do what they do we are tough to beat,” he said. This was the case Friday, May 10 in the quarterfinals of the L-L League

MERCHANDISER - Manheim Central Edition for granted.” The Barons, the No.1 seed in districts, will get a bye in the first round and will host a quarterfinal match May 20. Earlier in the week, Manheim beat Garden Spot 3-0 to wrap up its perfect record in Section Two. The Barons cruised to a 25-14, 25-15 and 26-24 triumph over the Spartans. Nissley had a huge game, posting four aces, 23 kills, four assists, two digs and two blocks. Zimmerman had 37 assists. TRACK Will Rivers won the triple jump at the L-L League meet Saturday, May 11 at Hempfield High School. The senior jumped 47-3.25, tying the meet record. “This was huge for him,” Barons’ coach Ryan Kennedy said. “He’s been performing consistently well all year. He is cool and calm and knows what to expect in big meets, and that goes a long way.” Rivers, who reached the podium three times for medals, was second in the long jump at 22-10.2. He had the lead until the last jump. He was also sixth in the javelin, throwing 163-7. The boys placed 11th overall and the girls 12th. “I am really pleased overall,” Kennedy said about how his teams performed. “There were a lot of personal bests and if not a personal best close to it. In this meet, you either go to win the meet and stack your lineup or you try to qualify as many as you can for districts. We went for districts. Eventually we want to compete in the top 3. Next year that may be the goal for the girls.” Kennedy said Zach Reed recovered from not running well in the 110 hurdles to place fourth in the 300 hurdles at 39.95. “He really bounced back from a disappointing race in the 110 and it enabled him have a nice race in the 300 hurdles,” Kennedy said. Isaac Martin ran a 4:48, nine seconds better than his personal best, in the 1600. He didn’t get a medal, but he continues his steady improvement, Kennedy said. The finals are at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 15 at Manheim Township High School. The gym Friday in Manheim was stifling hot. Dietrich said on a scale of 1 to 10 being unbearable, it was 9.5, he said. “It was a difficult atmosphere,” Dietrich said. “We just weren’t dialed in for the beginning two games. The

third game they were dialed in. I told guys going into the third game, ‘don’t take them (CV) for granted. Don’t let them get back into it.’” Jeremiah Zimmerman dished out 33 assists and served two aces. Wolford was sizzling hot in the middle, notching eight kills on 10 swings, one error in the middle. “It was one of his better matches,” Dietrich said, “and we needed him to play well.” Nissley smashed 18 kills and had five digs. “Mason was Mason,” Dietrich said. “He is so good that you take him for granted. long jump and 200 meters and Fahnestock in the 300 hurdles, making the Barons well-represented on both the boys and girls teams. “We are taking a lot of kids to districts that have been there before,” Kennedy said. “We are not going just to have fun. We should be competitive and send kids to states.” Kennedy said seniors Marianne Fitzkee, Maura Burrell and Emma Burkhart provided leadership and passed the torch to younger girls like Fahnestock and Good. A side note, the middle school girls track team won the team championship trophy at the AllLeague meet at Hempfield May 9. The MC boys finished fifth. SOFTBALL The softball team is off until May 20, the first day of Districts. The Lady Barons will scrimmage Central York at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 16 on the Pool Field. BASEBALL Colton Book’s two-run double to centerfield in the fifth inning put Manheim Central ahead 3-1 and proved to be the winning hit in a 3-1 victory over Solanco in the L-L League quarterfinals Saturday at Ephrata’s War Memorial Field. The Barons (19-2) advanced to Tuesday’s semifinals against Hempfield.

Book, who entered the game with an 8-0 record, started on the mound, giving up five hits. He was relieved by Drew Mummau in the fourth inning. Mummau kept the Golden Mules’ bats in check, giving up just four hits and striking out three. Curt Kroesen singled in the fifth and Hunter Hess walked to set up Book’s double. Barons’ boss Jason Thompson said getting big hits and moving runners was a key to the win. “Execution with runners in scoring position,” Thompson said. “Execution put us up 3-1 in the fifth with the double by Book. We tied it at 1-1 on good execution as well with a sacrifice bunt to put runners at 2nd and 3rd and got a ground ball to shortstop by Cody Gibble to get the run in.” On Tuesday, May 7 Manheim closed out the regular season with a 17-2 rout of Octorara. The Barons pounded out 16 hits. Book and Cole Lastinger combined for a two-hitter. Book threw the first three innings, striking out three and walking one. Lastinger, who did not walk or strike out any runners, homered in the contest as did Cody Gibble and Mummau. All three came in the first inning. For Gibble, who went 1-for-3 with two RBIs, it was his first varsity homer.

Rivers will compete in the long and triple jumps at districts. Tyler Flick in the high jump and Zach Reed in the 300 hurdles. The boys 4x800 placed eighth in the league meet with a time of 8:33, a season-best for the foursome of Hepner, Elijah Wagner, Michael Greenwald and Hunter Shoop. On the girls’ side, Laura Good placed second in the long jump at 17.4. The talented junior beat her personal best by about one foot, Kennedy said. She’s been working on her technique with coach Mitch Gibson. Gibson made some observations in her training, having her jump off her opposite foot and some late-season adjustments paid off. Tori Fahnestock finished eighth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 4:48.4, a tenth of second off her season best time. “She wanted to get on the medal stand,” Kennedy said. “She’s very competitive and attacks the hurdles well.” Junior Elsie Kline is starting to get comfortable in these big meets. She was seventh in the discus at 96.4 and placed eighth in the shot put, throwing a 33-11.5. The 4x400 relay team - Fahnestock, Rachel Nolt, Malea Stoner and Alexis Hosler placed fourth at 4:10, a seasonbest time. All four runners are back next year, which excites Kennedy. The group is made up of two freshmen and two juniors. Nolt, a freshman, did not medal in the 400, but ran a 1:02.48, almost hitting her personal best. “She’s running really well,” Kennedy said. “Sometimes freshmen don’t always perform well in their first big meet, but was not the case with her.” No medal, but Hosler, a junior, ran a 2:27.2, a season-best time for her, in the 800. Freshman Olivia Sunderland was 12th in the 1600 with a time of 12:38, 24 seconds better than her personal best. “That time was huge for her to get that time at the end of the season,” Kennedy said. “She battled through a lot of injuries and has done a lot of physical therapy. I am proud of how she persevered through the year and ended it on a great note.” Good moves on to districts for the

MERCHANDISER - Manheim Central Edition - May 15, 2019 - 15

The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra will present “Shostakovich Triumphant,” the group’s sixth and final concert of its 72nd season, on Saturday, May 18, at the Winter Center at Millersville University at 3 and 8 p.m. The Winter Center is located at 60 W. Cottage Ave., Millersville. The concert will include the Aram Khachaturian’s “Waltz” from the “Masquerade Suite,” Russell Peck’s “The Glory and the Grandeur” and Dimitri Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony.

Khachaturian is considered one of the leading Soviet composers and the most well-known Armenian composer of the 20th century. He was born in 1903 to poor Armenian parents in present-day Georgia and grew up with little formal music training until age 18 when he enrolled in the Gnessin Musical Institute. He studied cello, composition and biology, and he was awarded many prestigious awards and privileges for his compositions, which predominantly

exhibited folk Armenian flavors. Khachaturian was known as one of the “three titans of Soviet music,” along with Prokofiev and Shostakovich. His works span many genres, including concertos, symphonies, ballets and music for film, which can still be regularly heard today. The “Waltz” from the “Masquerade Suite” was written in 1941 for a play with the same name created by Russian poet and playwright Mikhail Lermontov. Despite the play having a tragic theme, the waltz is particularly spirited. Peck was a composer from Detroit, Mich., who was heavily influenced by the soul music being played in the city in the 1950s. A

He went on to be a professor at prestigious universities, including the Eastman School of Music. In his later years, he left teaching to pursue his passion - advocating for an end to world hunger. “The Glory and the Grandeur” is one of his most well-known pieces and is a work of Americana. The percussion section is in the spotlight, as a trio of percussion soloists plays 110 individual percussion instruments. Shostakovich was 19 when he began composing music. His career spanned a timeframe similar to the reign of Stalin, and artists of this era were severely punished, even executed, if their craft was perceived as going against the views and parameters set forth by the Communist Party. Shostakovich’s opera “Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District” received public criticism from Stalin, causing Shostakovich to fear his career, and even his life, would end. Shostakovich pressed on with composing, and about a year after the Stalin criticism, he debuted a new work, his Symphony No. 5. Reflecting a much more conserva-
