The seniors enjoying prom at Pleasant View Communities in late April may be just a wee bit older than your typical prom-goers, but they displayed the same enthusiasm and excitement for the event as their younger counterparts.
More than 100 residents from independent living, personal care and health care attended Spring Prom at the retirement community, located at 544 N. Penryn Road, Manheim. The residence staff worked with members of the community service-focused Interact Club at Manheim Central High School to coordinate the event.
“We have a great relationship with the Interact Club and have always loved collaborating with them on fun ideas for ways to interact with our residents,”
said Aubrey Smith, community engagement coordinator for Pleasant View. “We mentioned doing a dance, and the idea just took off from there.”
“An event like this is an opportunity for everyone to come together.”
Students came to the Pleasant View campus a few days before the prom to offer manicures to residents, create balloon arches for decoration and bake cupcakes and cookies for the prom.
Like a traditional prom, attendees arrived via limo, courtesy of Lancaster Luxury Limousine.
“The limo picked up residents
from cottages and apartments and brought them to the main entrance, where we created a fun backdrop and even had a pink carpet,” Smith said, noting that a red carpet didn’t fit with the event’s spring color scheme.
Residents enjoyed socializing and dancing during the event. Steve Ober from Longenecker’s True Value in Manheim donated a beverage fountain, and live music was provided by The Chestnuts.
The Spring Prom brought back some very special memories for one couple.
“Mark Winters and Esther Brosey had their one and only date going to the senior prom at Manheim Central in 1949,” Smith shared. “They have since reconnected after becoming widowed and were thrilled to get to have a second prom date.”
While Pleasant View staff members have worked with members

Contested on indoor or outdoor courts, pickleball is a sport similar to tennis and pingpong played with a hard plastic ball and a paddle. Now a local nonprofit is seeking to capitalize on pickleball’s recent popularity to battle human trafficking.

The rules are easy to pick up. It’s something that’s fun and brings everyone together.”
The second edition of NSI’s pickleball tournament will be contested on Saturday, June 15,

“Each month has a theme this year,” Schmid noted. “It’s a fun way to engage the community and our business owners. June’s theme will be ‘Summer Reading.’ We’ll be working with the Manheim Community Library to kick off their Summer Reading Program.”
Also on June 6, music will be provided by Good Chemistry Band, which will perform in the gazebo in Market Square from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The band plays a mix of classic and southern rock cover songs.
Regular participants in 1st Thursday events include Boutique 1780, Cottage & Vine, Divine Consign, Horst Arts, Jubilee Ministries and the Fasig and Keath houses. Local restaurants, including A&M Pizza and Twisted Sisters Ice Cream & Handmade Chocolate, offer food specials, and a variety of food trucks set up on the square. Cavod Performing Arts provides games and giveaways on the square, and other local organizations are represented in the square as well.
1st Thursdays rely on community to support to be successful, Schmid said. “These events are made possible by donations from
our MACC sponsors, AES Clean Technology, Blue Ridge Communications, Jonestown Bank & Trust and Utility Keystone Trailer Sales,” she shared. “We couldn’t do it without their support.”
Holding the 1st Thursday events serves many purposes, she noted. “We want residents to have pride in Manheim,” she said. “There are positive changes happening and business owners investing in our town. Come out and support them! You can expect good food, live music and fun activities - and more often than not, a quick rain shower.”

A flurry of activity will take place in and around Maytown square on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, when a ceremony to honor servicemen and servicewomen is held along with a street fair.
The events will begin with the 61st annual Antique, Art, Craft and Collectible Show, which will run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The show will feature a variety of vendors selling antiques and homemade items. Food, including breakfast, will be available beginning at 8 a.m.
At 2 p.m., a program will be held in the square. State Rep. Tom Jones will dedicate engraved bricks honoring members of the community who are veterans or have made an impact on community organizations. Local Boy Scouts will be recognized for earning their Eagle Scout awards, and several state dignitaries will be in attendance, including Tracy Seiders, the state
vice president of the American Legion Auxiliary, and Karla Zaar, the state chair of Americanism for the American Legion Auxiliary.
People will have an opportunity to win an American flag blanket, hand-crocheted by Nila Grose. All proceeds from the events of the day will benefit veterans, including a veteran named Carl, who is a permanent patient at the Coatesville Veterans Affairs Medical Center and who is supported by the members of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 809.
Sara Gutshall of the American Legion Auxiliary has coordinated the Memorial Day events for many years.
“Veterans deserve our respect and honor,” she said. “I have brothers, cousins, uncles who were veterans. Patriotism is very important to me. Our veterans deserve the best from us because they gave their best for us.”
Over the years, Gutshall has taken an active role
in restoring the Maytown square, which features monuments recognizing local service members of various wars. She was instrumental in overseeing the installation of iron archways over the four walkways into the square, and she recently worked with local blacksmith Stan Newcomer to add lanterns to each archway. The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 809 will donate eight American flags to line the

of the Interact Club in the past to host themed dances such as a sock hop, this was the first time the two groups hosted an event for all residents in all levels of care, Smith said.
“The response has been so amazing, so we feel we have to make this an annual event,” she remarked. “An event like this is an opportunity for everyone to come together. Residents who have transitioned into other levels of living were reunited with old neighbors and friends, (and) spouses and children had an opportunity to dress up and join their loved ones
for an evening together reminiscing through songs and music they love and also a great time to create new memories. Having the energy and creativity from the students added an extra element of fun to this unique event.”

“It’s a very family, fun atmosphere,” said Wagner. “There are tons of spectators and supporters. But there’s going to be a lot more going on than just a pickleball tournament. We also want people to know who we are as an organization.”
NSI’s pickleball tournament draw will be broken down into three divisions: beginner, intermediate and advanced. Each division can accommodate up to 25 teams.
The sponsored event will also include music provided by a DJ.
“It’s a mix of everyone,” said Wagner of individuals expected to attend. “It’s
both supporters of NSI and pickleball players. It’s pickleball players who play regularly and neighbors. We’re hoping the brackets will make the tournament more competitive.”
NSI had so much fun with its initial venture into the competitive pickleball world in 2023 that it decided to stage another tournament this year. Last year’s event netted over $4,000 for NSI, a total the nonprofit is hoping to double this year.
“All of the money raised will directly support our women going through our program at The House,” said Wagner. With facilities to support up to 10 residents, The Harbor is a safe house that provides support in the form of classes, therapy and life skills development.
“Different people have different capacities to give,” said Wagner. “No matter how big or small it is, it truly makes a difference in the lives of these women. NSI’s ultimate goal is to have survivors graduate
and live a life of independence, whatever that looks like for them.”
Located in Lititz and founded in 2010, NSI conducts two other fundraising and awareness events throughout the course of the year: the Welcome to the Battle anti-trafficking event in January and Light Up the Night in October.
“We were needing to fill
a gap, and we were hearing pickleball all over the place,” said Wagner. “Someone in our office said, ‘Let’s try a pickleball tournament, just because of how popular it is.’ We were like, ‘Let’s give it a try.’ We honestly didn’t know how it was going to go, but it took off. Now we’re hoping to expand it and grow it into the future.”

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Lancaster and Lebanon Counties celebrated the swearing in of nine new court-appointed special advocates on May 1. CASA staff members, board members, and community supporters gathered in the Imperial Blue Room of the Holiday Inn Lancaster to watch as the Honorable Leonard G. Brown III swore in the new class of volunteers. The Honorable Shawn P. McLaughlin was also in attendance. The event was the culmination of more than 30 hours of training completed by each volunteer in order to assist children in Lancaster County’s foster care system.
The new volunteer advocates are Kristin Antrim, CASA Lebanon program specialist, Brownstown; Kathryn (Katie) Boatwright, Manheim Township; Rose Connelly, Lititz; John Featherlin, Manheim Township; Kelly Frye, Lititz; Amy Harcourt, Lancaster; Brianna (Bri)
Hornberger, Manor Township; Irene Marianos, Manheim Township; and Laura Rusch, Lancaster.
A CASA volunteer is a trained citizen who is appointed by a judge to represent the best interests of a child in court. The children for whom volunteers advocate have been abused and neglected and placed in the foster care system. CASA volunteers work to help ensure a safe and per-
manent home for the child as quickly as possible. The volunteer speaks with the child and others involved in the child’s life such as biological parents, foster parents, social workers, teachers, doctors, and therapists.
The new volunteers represent the 45th class of Lancaster County volunteer advocates sworn in. They join the 135 active volunteers currently advo-
cating for 163 children in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. CASA hopes to one day provide a volunteer to every child in need. CASA will hold information sessions about becoming a volunteer advocate on Wednesday, May 22, and Monday, June 3. The sessions will run from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. For more information and to register, visit www.casalancleb.org or call 717-286-1430.

ASPIE held an open house in December 2023, and at the event, nearly $3,000 in donations was received for artwork from 10 ASPIE artists whose mediums ranged from wood craft to jewelry to paintings to photographic canvases.
ASPIE is a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating supplemental income for adult artisans with disabilities. The organization helps the artisans generate income through donations for their original artwork through www.aspiesartists. com and its Lancaster gallery.
At the December open house, ASPIE board member Phil Whitebloom of Maryland was fascinated by artworks by Steven Georges and Kate Manners, both of whom have cerebral palsy.
Georges learned how to weld years ago and made adaptive equipment like grab bars and custom furniture to aid him at his home in Mount Joy. He now also sculpts metal art from recycled steel. His pieces are primarily inspired by
animal and plant life but also include wine bottle racks, classic car part lamps, furniture, replicas of heavy machinery such as tractors and bulldozers, spacecraft replicas, and garden ornaments.
Manners primarily creates acrylic pour paintings on canvas. Her longtime interest in art stemmed from family members such as her grandmother, who was an artist and art teacher, and was encouraged by her elementary school art teacher and the robust art program in her school district. When her day program was shut down during the pandemic, she started exploring crafting and painting with the help of her parents, with whom she lives in Lancaster. By 2021, she discovered the pour painting technique, which now dominates her work.
Whitebloom enjoyed both Georges’ and Manners’ artworks displayed at the
open house so much that he decided to commission artwork for himself. He asked Georges to create a junk-metal sculpture of a telescope and gave the artist pictures of his own solar telescope for reference. He commissioned Manners to create a pour painting of the sun based on any creative mix of pigments and design.
The requests reflected Whitebloom’s interest in astronomy, specifically solar astronomy. After receiving the finished artworks,
he displayed them at the annual Winter Star Party in Big Pine Key, Fla.
ASPIE will host open houses on Saturdays, May 18 and 25, and Sundays, May 19 and 26, at its gallery, 1905 Barton Drive, Lancaster. Artworks by a dozen people will be available to view and to purchase by donation. The gallery may also be visited at other times by appointment; to learn more, call ASPIE president Jerry Buckwalter at 207-412-8090.
