MPACT To Stage “James And The Giant Peach Jr.”
By Chelsea Peifer
On May 15, Northwest Emergency Medical Services (NWEMS) presented Robert C. Stirling Educational Scholarships to two students during Manheim Central High School’s (MCHS) awards ceremony for graduating seniors. The ceremony took place at Manheim Central Middle School. The scholarships are offered each spring through the Stirling family and NWEMS, which the Manheim Veterans Memorial Ambulance Association merged with in 2013. A committee of NWEMS and Stirling family representatives selects the recipients each year. The $1,000 educational scholarship is named in memory and honor of Bob Stirling, who was

More than a year ago, Lititz merchant Gaylord Poling contacted the board of the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO) to suggest that the group play a concert in Lititz Springs Park near Memorial Day. The event would revive a tradition from the past.
Poling teamed up with Stephen Armbruster of a local bank, and the two worked with representatives of the William and Jemima Brossman Charitable Foundation and the Irene Weidman Charitable Trust to sponsor a concert scheduled for the Saturday prior to Memorial Day 2018. “We didn’t get to play in the park because the weather was really wet,” lamented Mary Ellen Davis, LSO board chair. “It was humid and threatening rain.” The concert was moved to the Warwick High School (WHS) auditorium, where the musicians played to a standing-room-only audience. “We are hopeful this year (the weather) will be a little bit better,” said Davis of the free LSO concert that is planned for Saturday, May 25, at 7 p.m. in Lititz Springs Park, 24 N. Broad St., Lititz. The concert, which will feature patriotic music, a pyrotechnics display, and well-known show tunes, will be held in the band shell at the back of the park. Should there be inclement weather, the event will move to the WHS auditorium, 301 W. Orange St., Lititz. Davis noted that a change in venue would be announced by Thursday, May 23. Davis said that the concert will begin with the national anthem, and patriotic selections will include some Sousa marches,
MANHEIM CENTRAL EDITION
“God Bless America,” and the “1812 Overture,” which will feature fireworks in place of the cannon shots in the song. Davis added that audiences should recognize many of the selections. “This is what we call a pops concert, so we will play a lot of show tunes. It is music that everyone will know and sing along to,” she said. Among the songs that will be included in the 75-minute concert will be tunes from “Evita,” “A Chorus Line,” and “Les Misérables.” The 50-member orchestra that will play in the park will be conducted by Stephen Gunzenhauser. Davis noted that LSO has been performing for more than 70 seasons and that she believes the group is the oldest continuously operating arts organization in Lancaster County. “We have put forth a season every year since 1947,” Davis said. Davis said that LSO is thankful to the community members who wanted to make an old-fashioned concert in the park available to local residents in celebration of Memorial Day. “We are thrilled to have someone like Gaylord who understands and appreciates symphonic music and the value to the community of giving back,” said Davis, who hopes many Memorial Day concerts are held in the future. “We would like to make this a tradition,” said Davis. “This
is a nice evening out in late spring.” Lititz Springs Park will be open prior to the event for attendees who wish to bring a picnic to enjoy before the show. Davis shared that the musicians will be rehearsing in the park the afternoon before the concert and eating a picnic dinner before performing. More information about the event may be found at www.lititzspringspark.org and at https://lititzpa.com/venture -lititz. Pictured on front:

The community is invited to the annual Mount Joy Memorial Day Parade at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 25. The parade will form at Angle Street and continue down Main Street to Barbara Street. According to organizer Brenda Kready, the parade, which is known as one of the oldest Memorial Day parades in Lancaster County, attracts between 3,000 and 5,000 spectators every year. VFW Post 5752 and Mount Joy American Legion Post 185 are avid supporters of the parade. This year’s grand marshal is Cpl. Charles Willis “Chas” Heaps, who is being honored posthumously. Heaps was a 1964 graduate of Donegal High School, where he was a member of the soccer team. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Heaps. His father was principal of the former Seiler Elementary School.
Included in this year’s parade lineup will be the Donegal High School marching band, Donegal High School Alumni Band, Central York Middle School Fife and Drum Corps, Ceol Neamh Pipe Band, Kiltie Band of York, Dixieland Band, Kracker Beez, Last Stand Band, and Lions Wind Ensemble, as well as two privately owned antique fire trucks. Several Mount Joy-area organizations, including the historical society, Community 4-H Club, Athletic Association, Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, Lions Club, and Milanof-Schock Library, will take part in the parade, as well as local churches, sports teams, businesses, radio stations, and fire companies. Rep. Dave Hickernell, Commissioner Dennis Stuckey, and Mayor Timothy Bradley will also ride in the procession. Donations of nonperishable food items for the Mount Joy Food Bank will be collected by volunteers and put into a trolley featured in the parade. This year’s lineup is a far cry from the original parade held in

This year we did not have one due to lack of volunteers,” explained Kready. Instead, letters were sent to local businesses seeking donations and offering advertisement opportunities in the parade program booklet. Kready emphasized that to ensure the parade can take place again next year, more volunteers are needed both in planning for the event and on parade day. To sign up to volunteer on parade day or for planning the 2020 parade, interested individuals may email mtjoyparade@aol.com.

Heaps worked at Auto Litho Inc. in Mount Joy and was a member of the Mount Joy Fire Company and Chiques United Methodist Church. He enlisted in the army in November 1965 and was stationed at Fort Carson before being sent overseas. As a private first class, Heaps was a machine gunner on a helicopter in the First Air Cavalry Division at An Khe. He served in B. Company, 5th Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment (Airmobile), stationed in the An Lo Valley, north of Qui Nhon in Vietnam. Cpl. Heaps was in Vietnam from August 1966 until his death at age 21 on April 8, 1967, in the province of Binh Dinh by hostile small arms fire. Prior to the parade, the public is invited to a Memorial Day ceremony at 10 a.m. at Mount Joy’s War Memorial Park, 101 Marietta Ave. The ceremony is led each year by VFW Post 5752 and Mount Joy American Legion Post 185 and includes a flag ceremony by local Boy Scout troops.

Guest speakers who were prominent visionaries for creating the nursing facility will highlight MHNRC’s formation and history at the 50th anniversary service, as well as share heartfelt testimonies. “Our theme (for the service) is faithfulness,” Wilson said. “Mount Hope’s entire mission and vision is serving seniors regardless of their ability to pay or not, and that is really an upside-down way of thinking when it comes to long-term care.” According to Wilson, more than 85 percent of MHNRC residents are on Medicaid, and the retirement home gave more than $1 million in charitable care last year. “Everything that does come in goes right back (to) the residents,” Wilson explained. Being able to provide quality, affordable care to the lowincome and disabled elderly population is something that Wilson emphasizes is only made possible through the support and generosity of the community. Wilson said that the famous saying “It takes a village to raise a child” can be applied to the mindset at MHNRC. “An entire community of people must interact with Mount Hope for this unique vision to grow and, at the same time, fulfill a great need for affordable nursing care.” The anniversary celebration will also include remarks from Manheim Mayor Scot Funk, and Rep. Mindy Fee will present MHNRC with a citation for serving area seniors for 50 years. A freewill offering will be received for MHNRC. “There is also going to be a time of prayer for Mount Hope - for covering and protection and that we can stay a vital part of the community,” added Wilson. “Mount Hope is a real community asset.” For more details on the anniversary celebration or to preorder chicken barbecue tickets, readers may contact Wilson at 717-682-8026 or advance ment@mthopenazarene.org. Baron Teams Compete In Post-Season by Eric G. Stark
Zach Reed saved his best performance for his biggest meet. Reed, a Manheim Central senior, won the silver medal in the 300 hurdles at the District Three Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University Friday and Saturday, May 17-18. Reed didn’t just come in second. He also posted a personal-best time of 39.23, a time good enough to qualify for states. The time was three tenths of a second faster than his previous personal record of 39.52. “He’s been improving very steadily during the year,” head coach Ryan Kennedy said. “His race was a culmination of all his hard work. He’s been to this meet before and knows what to expect. Zach is very diligent with his training. Coach (Russ) White is a very good hurdles coach. Consistency, intensity and hard work are keys for him. He practiced all winter with hurdles and the hard work shaved off seconds for his big PR. “I’m not surprised, given the type of competitor he is. It all came together for him on a big stage in the district meet. It is not surprising, but it is a huge achievement and not easy to achieve.” He wasn’t the only Baron to bring home a medal. Follow senior Will Rivers brought two back to Manheim, actually.
Rivers was second in the long and triple jumps. No personal best jumps, but he executed well, Kennedy said. Sophomores Kade Kegarise competed in the javelin and Nate Reed in the 300 hurdles. Neither placed or notched a personal best, but both performed to their standards and now have valuable experience competing at districts, Kennedy said. Laura Good competed in the 100, 200 and long jump. It is impressive to qualify in three events. She is only a junior, so Kennedy expects her to be back at districts. The same with Tori Fahnestock, a junior competing in the 300 hurdles. “For Nate and Tori, it was their first time at districts,” Kennedy said. “No personal best, but solid races, and that is an accomplishment in itself.” In the case of Nate Reed, Kegarise, Good and Fahnestock, now they know what to expect at districts, Kennedy said. It is a good core group that will be coming back next year and hopefully bringing teammates with them, he noted. Rivers will compete in the long and triple jump at the state meet at Shippensburg and Zach Reed will represent the Barons in the 300 hurdles. Taking home three medals at districts didn’t surprise Kennedy. He knows how competitive Rivers and Zach Reed are and the coaching they’ve received. “Manheim Central track has a

strong history of being competitive and scoring points,” Kennedy said prior to districts. “The name on the front of the uniform brings a lot of pride. This is the best coaching staff I’ve ever seen. They want the kids to improve. Our coaches work to bring out the best in our kids.” BASEBALL Colton Book was a little shaky in the first inning and Hempfield capitalized on a few Barons’ miscues to score two runs in the first and two more in the seventh to hand Manheim a 4-2 loss in the Lancaster-Lebanon League
semifinals Tuesday, May 14 at Ephrata War Memorial Field. Book, who struck out seven batters and only walked two, gave up a home run to the first batter of the game. Hempfield added another run in the first before Book settled in, yielding only two hits over the next five innings. The Black Knights took advantage of some Baron miscues in the seventh to add two more runs. These runs proved very important in the final outcome. Up 2-0, Hempfield went up 3-0 on a bases loaded walk and 4-0 on
a ball that dropped near second base. Manheim’s Garrett Bruckhart (2 for 2) hit a two-out, two-run home run to cut the lead to 4-2. “They got some key hits when they needed them and we made a mistake or two, head coach Jason Thompson said. “Otherwise, we were evenly matched.” Central, which fell to 19-3 on the season, went toeto-toe with a Hempfield team (19-4) that is the top seed in Class 6A for District Three. Thompson told his troops to keep their heads up. “That they hung right there with the No.1 power rated school in 6A and gave an outstanding
effort,” Thompson said. “I also told them that we might not reach our goal of league champs but they put themselves in position to go after another goal of ours in the district title and making the state tournament.” The Barons hosted Northern in district action on Monday, April 20. MERCHANDISER - Manheim Central Edition the Barons’ case, a lack of solid defense prevented them from stopping Hempfield and advancing to the Lancaster-Lebanon League championship. The semifinal match between the Black Knights and Barons was a rematch of last year’s league finals where Hempfield prevailed. This year the Knights pulled out a hard-fought 3-0 victory, winning three tight games, 28-26, 25-23 and 25-21. “Mason (Nissley) was the standout performer and the difference was we did not do a good job at all on defense to limit their attack,” said head coach Craig Dietrich, whose squad lost in the league, district and state finals last year. This year, they came up one match sort of the finals. Nissley, fresh off winning L-L League Section Two MVP honors, was on his game, pounding 24 kills. Manheim was in great position to take Game One, leading 23-21, before Hempfield mounted a late rally to pull out a crazy back-and-forth battle. The teams were tied at 26 before the Knights scored the last two points to close out the game. The Barons put together a rally in Game Two to cut Hempfield’s lead to 24-23 in the second game, but could not close out the game. To their credit, the Barons did not hang their heads, even though they trailed 2-0 in the match. In the third game, Manheim jumped out to a 5-0 lead and the teams were tied at 8-8.

Memorial Day Program Set In Manheim

Barons Jeremiah Zimmerman (19) and Ben Wolford team up to block a Hempfield shot in last Monday’s Lancaster-Lebanon League semifinal meeting in Manheim.
But Hempfield’s depth and size Zimmerman notched 35 assists. Nissley added four aces. Brandyn proved too much. Sophomore setter Jeremiah Musser (five digs) and Ben Wolford each had two blocks. Musser and Wolford joined Nissley as First-Team Section Two All-Stars. Zimmerman earned second-team honors. The Barons earned a bye for the first round of District Three action and hosted a second round match against Hershey Monday, May 20. SOFTBALL The Barons faced Twin Valley Tuesday, May 21 in a 7 p.m. tilt.

books, jewelry, glass, pottery, outdoor furniture, bamboo plants, crystals and gemstones, antiques, and more. Broommaking and blacksmithing demonstrations will also take place. Traditional fair food will be available to purchase, including sausage sandwiches, funnel cakes, fried sandwich cookies, fried rice and noodles, smoothies, ice cream, and more. Gutshall emphasized that the event is a fundraiser to support veterans - something near and dear to her own heart as she had three brothers and numerous uncles and nephews who served in the military. “I can’t give up on our veterans,” remarked Gutshall. “And I’m dedicated to Maytown because I was born here.” The Auxiliary - which Gutshall noted is 65 members strong - supports veterans at the Lebanon, Coatesville, and Southeastern VA hospitals in various capacities, including sending monetary donations, clothing, and other supplies as needed. Auxiliary members crochet blankets for veterans at Rheems Nursing Home and Paramount Senior Living. Members also deliver care packages to local veterans who are ill or otherwise in need. The parade will stage on North King Street beginning at 3 p.m., with the procession kicking off promptly at 4 p.m. This year’s grand marshal will be James Embly, a longtime resident of Maytown. The Maytown Memorial Day Parade Committee is encouraging community groups, family units, and individuals not currently signed up to participate in the parade to consider being part of this year’s parade. For
American Legion Auxiliary Unit 809 of Maytown members Connie Longenecker (left) and Sara Gutshall invite the community to the 57th annual Antique, Art, Craft, and Collectible Show in Maytown on Memorial Day, followed by a parade and ceremony in the town square. instance, children in the neighborhood could form a bicycle group, decorate their bikes, and ride in the parade as a unit. All groups must register in advance, and any interested groups or individuals may do so by emailing mrguinivan@comcast.net. Prior to the start of the parade, ceremonies will be held at each of the cemeteries in Maytown. Beginning at 3 p.m., members of the local Girl Scouts and any other school-age children who would like to participate will decorate the graves of veterans buried in the cemetery at Maytown Reformed United Church of Christ, 11 E. Elizabeth St. The Bainbridge Band will perform selections in honor of all veterans. Afterward, the assembly will move to the cemetery at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 11 N. Queen. St., for a similar observance.
The American Legion Post 809 annually sponsors a Memorial Day Service of Remembrance immediately following the conclusion of the parade in the Maytown Square. Donegal High School teacher Justin Neideigh, who coordinates Veterans Day programs at the school, will be the main speaker. The program will also include musical selections by the Bainbridge Band and the Donegal Intermediate School chorus and a bagpipes selection by Michael Luckenbill. All members of the community are invited to participate in aspects of the Maytown Memorial Day observance. Post and Auxiliary members encourage area residents to fly the American flag for Memorial Day weekend. For more details, readers may search for “Maytown Memorial Day Parade” on Facebook.

known for his enthusiasm for the town and community of Manheim, where he lived and worked. Stirling owned an insurance business, was active in many community and civic activities, and was a lifetime member of the Manheim Veterans Memorial Ambulance Association. Stirling’s interest in the ambulance service began when he assisted a volunteer ambulance crew at an accident that had occurred in front of his home on East High Street. On the crew that day was Clarence “Mike” Graham, one of the ambulance association’s founding members, who asked Stirling if he would like to ride along and assist with the transport of the patient. That invitation led to more than 30 years of service for Stirling with the ambulance association. After his passing in June 1994, his family and the Manheim Veterans Memorial Ambulance Association created an educational scholarship for residents of the Manheim Central community who are pursuing a career in the medical field. The first scholarships were awarded in 1995, and NWEMS proudly continues the tradition today. The 2019 recipients are MCHS seniors Brittany Benner and Savannah Heisey. Brittany is the daughter of Loren and Amy Benner. At MCHS, she was captain of the varsity girls’ soccer team and a student representative for Manheim Central Foundation for Educational Enrichment (MCFEE). She was also a member

So, Ababou has teamed up with fellowshiptrained sports medicine doctor John Murphy and experienced triathlete Sara Grosh to hold a free seminar on how to train safely and more fully for the event. The seminar, dubbed Triathlon Training, Tips, and Transitions: Getting Started Safely, will be held at the Lititz recCenter, 301 W. Maple St., Lititz, on Monday, June 10, at 6 p.m. Murphy, a doctor with UPMC Pinnacle, which is a sponsor of the triathlon, will focus on training techniques with the goal of minimizing injury risk and maximizing the rewards of training effectively and safely. The rec center’s triathlon requires participants to swim 300 meters in the outdoor pool, bike 15.8 miles through the farmland surrounding Lititz,
and run 3.1 miles. “Dr. Murphy thought it would be great to have a clinic to speak about triathlon training and tips and how to start safely,” explained Ababou. “ We want to send a message that you still have time to prepare and train for the event.” Ababou noted that Murphy will include information to help participants move smoothly from one activity to the next. “People need to know what you need to have to swim, bike, and run,” he said, noting that helmets are required and that participants should consider that they may need goggles, a swim cap, bike shoes, sunglasses, water bottles, sunscreen, and more. Knowing how to handle the transitions from swimming to biking to running is important too. Ababou noted that he believes participants who drink enough water when cycling will be safer when they run. Immediately following the seminar, those who attended will have the opportunity to join the Lititz recCenter Triathlon Training and Running Club, which Ababou oversees. Triathlon activities range from sprint distances to Ironman events. Novice triathletes
