Step up to Teen Central
BY CATHY MOLITORISMoving up to a new school can be intimidating. Teen Central wants to help. The youth center will host Step Up Day on Wednesday, June 12, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at 15 S. Wolf St., Manheim.
“This event takes place right after the school year ends, and we welcome all new fifth-graders - students who have just finished elementary school and who will then be eligible to attend Teen Central - for a fun day of tie-dye, snow cones, popcorn, games, and more,” said Janelle Heying, executive director of Teen Central. “This event does include a free meal as well. After this event, all new fifth graders are welcome to attend Teen Central throughout the rest of the summer along with all of our current students.”
Although Step Up Day is focused on incoming fifth-graders, all students who have completed fourth through eighth grades are invited to attend. Teen Central’s programming is offered to students through grade 12, but this program is specifically for middle school students, Heying explained.
“This is a great way to welcome new students who are now eligible to attend our ministry,” she shared. “It gives them a glimpse into what we do here at Teen Central in a fun and inviting way.”
Teen Central fulfills a need just for these kids, Heying said. “As students transition into new schools, new experiences, and new opportunities, Teen Central feels like it is important for students to find a safe space to be able to feel connected and be themselves in a supportive and loving atmosphere - a place where students can interact with friends, find a listening ear, or simply burn some energy in positive ways,” she commented, adding that Teen Central aims to offer quality life experiences and
spiritual development to local youths. “Our ministry can be a constant and dependable safe place for students to come to when some of the other aspects of their life are experiencing change - or when they aren’t! And all of what we do is done through the love of Christ. I encourage students to come check out all of the opportunities and resources we have and to see if Teen Central can be a place for them.”
Teen Central will continue its regular programming throughout June and July, along with monthly special events. The center is closed in August. All of the programming includes free time, typically filled with games, crafts, and socializing, plus a Bible study and a free meal. The organization recently hired two new employees, who will continue to strengthen the nonprofit’s
mission. Jordan Zimmerman is the new program director, and Shelby Summers joins Teen Central as activities coordinator.
Heying hopes new students will check out Teen Central and that students already familiar with the organization will return.
“It is our hope and prayer that our organization can be a place where youth can come to have their needs met, whether those needs are a few hours of interacting and playing games with friends, a place to come and rest during the hot summer months, or a place to provide full bellies during the break from school and beyond,” she said.

BY CATHY MOLITORISSweet fruit and some even sweeter talent will be in the spotlight when Salem United Methodist Church hosts its annual Strawberry Sundae Talent Show. The event will be held on Sunday, June 2, at the church, 140 N. Penn St., Manheim. An ice cream social will run from 4 to 6 p.m., followed by the talent show starting at 6:30 p.m.
Strawberries are picked locally by members of the church’s Appalachia Service Project (ASP) team, said Doug Winters, who is organizing the event. The strawberries will be served with ice cream, cake, and other toppings.
Performers in the talent show will include Doug and Charlie Winters, Mandy Sheetz, Tim
Hoffman, Fern Habecker and Frank Rittenhouse, the Salem bell choir, Joyce Drake and Jack Rutt, Tom Breneisen, Katie Yoder and Luana Baltozer, and Terri Briskie.
Admission to the event is by donation, and all proceeds will benefit a church mission trip
BY CATHY MOLITORISOver the past decade, Lee DeRemer has watched great things happen with Lifecycles. The nonprofit Christ-centered mentoring program aims to build young people of character through bicycling.
“This program appeals to a wide range of young people with different gifts and skills, but it seems to really attract teen boys and girls who haven’t found their way in a team sport or another program in school,” he
said. “For many kids, this is the first thing that clicks, and that’s very rewarding.”
Lee and his wife, Marcie, started Lifecycles with a mission of supporting youths in the community. “This program always has been and still is 100% free for the boys and girls who participate,” Lee said, noting that bikes, helmets and other safety gear are all provided if needed, along with a free hot meal every time the group gets together for a ride.
“This year, we’ve got 139 boys
Bicycling from
and girls registered, and 38 of those are first-time participants,” he shared. “The bulk of our participants are from Lancaster County, but we have folks from York, Lebanon, Dauphin and Perry counties, too.” The program is open to youths ages 12 to 18, and Lifecycles teams are split into boys’ and girls’ groups. Boys’ and girls’ teams ride from Riverfront Park, 551 Vinegar Ferry Road, Marietta, on Tuesdays at 5:45 p.m., and boys’ and girls’ teams also ride from Amos Herr Park, 1700 Nissley Road, Landisville, at 5:45 p.m. on Thursdays.
In addition to the groups enjoying rides around the countryside of Lancaster County, some of the more seasoned participants are training for longer, challenging rides taking place
“Glitz
this summer. A girls’ team will ride a six-day, 230mile route along the coast of Lake Michigan, finishing at Mackinac Island. Boys’ teams will ride a six-day, 320-mile route from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C., on the Great Allegheny Passage/C&O Canal trail; a six-day, 290-mile route to Niagara Falls; and an eight-day, 350-mile route from northern Pennsylvania through the Adirondack Mountains. A boys’ team will also take a 13-day, 430-mile ride in Colorado, finishing with a summit of Mount Blue Sky on North America’s highest paved road at 14,271 feet.
“It’s going to be a very fun summer,” Lee said. “We are also rolling out an internally developed bicycling skills curriculum.
We’ve spent six months writing our own curriculum, and this will help us provide more structure to the cycling skills we teach.”
Teams will ride locally during the week through the end of August, and Lifecycles will continue with rides on two Saturdays in both September and October.
He noted that as Lifecycles celebrates 10 years of serving youths, he continues to appreciate the impact the program has on its participants.
“It’s common for a lot of teens to feel unseen in their school environment,” he said. “They are flourishing in Lifecycles.”
For more information on Lifecycles, visit www.life cyclesteam.org.
Although the season has already started, youths can join the program at any point. Volunteers are also welcome at any time, Lee said.
and Glam” dance recital posted
Cricket’s Performing Arts will present its 30th season dance recital, “Cricket’s Performing Arts June Show: Glitz and Glam.” The event will take place on Saturday, June 8, at 2 p.m. at Manheim Central Middle School, 261 White Oak Road, Manheim.
Not only does this event mark a milestone in the
institution’s history, but it also embodies the organization’s core values of strength, grace, and beauty. Cricket’s Performing Arts started in 1993 as the successor to the Dance Center of Manheim and B’s Performing Arts. Under the artistic direction of Deborah Winchell, also known as Ms. Cricket, “Glitz
and Glam” will feature performances that span a wide range of styles and genres, from classical ballet to con-
temporary jazz and hip-hop. In addition to honoring the past, “Glitz and Glam” seeks to offer a glimpse into the future of dance through innovative choreography and artistic vision that push the boundaries of creativity and expression.

to Fayette County, W. Va., to complete work through ASP. This will be the 42nd year a group from Salem United Methodist Church has participated in an ASP project. “The theme in general for ASP is to make homes ‘warmer, safer, and drier,’” Doug explained. “We work on foundations and roofs and everything in between. Last year, we repaired flooring in a bathroom and kitchen, by replacing subflooring and installing new laminate flooring.” The group has also removed and replaced vinyl siding, installed wheelchair ramps and porches, hung doors and drywall, and completed lots of painting.
“A lot of the work is structural, but some is cosmetic,” Doug shared. “The most rewarding work,
though, is the relationships that are built with the families in central Appalachia.” Church members going on the mission trip this summer are Doug Winters, Charlie Winters, Chris Trovinger, Brynn Trovinger, Kylee Trovinger, Uri Almoneda, Jim Stouch, Mark Heller, Ben Heller, Garreth Wright, and Herman Fittery.

Proclaiming the Good News
BY CATHY MOLITORISThe members of Proclamation Presbyterian Church in Mount Joy like to use a phrase to sum up their ministry: “All are welcome, all are needy and all are needed.”
“Christ gives His invitation to everyone, so are all welcomed in that sense,” said pastor Troy De Bruin. “We are all sinners in need of a Savior, so we are needy, and God has given gifts to every person, youngest to oldest, to be used in service, so we are needed.”
As the church marks its 10th anniversary, De Bruin and associate pastor Collin Gingrich are looking forward to continued growth while looking back on their journey so far.
“We are a daughter church of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Lancaster,” De Bruin shared, noting that Westminster has a history of planting churches. De Bruin, who joined Westminster as a youth pastor in 2000, worked with Westminster staff to look for a new church home in the Mount Joy/Elizabethtown area in the fall of 2013.
By February of 2014, Proclamation Presbyterian
Church was welcoming worshippers to services at Mount Joy Church of God. The church met on Sunday evenings, but after a few years, the congregation changed locations to be able to offer Sunday morning services. Proclamation met at Florin Church of the Brethren from April 2016 to March 2020 before moving to its current home at Kraybill Mennonite School, 598 Kraybill Church Road, Mount Joy.
Both De Bruin and Gingrich note that Proclamation offers the strength of the Presbyterian denomination combined with a smalltown, community spirit.
“As a denomination, there’s a high focus and priority on preaching the Word of God,” De Bruin said. “Our worship is both with reverence and with joy. “We intentionally rehearse the Gospel in our worship service, and we partake of the Lord’s Supper every week. Being a smaller church, that helps us to be more of a family, with a welcoming feeling. There is a true welcoming spirit and love for one another.”
Added Gingrich, “It’s in our name: Proclamation. Our weekly proclamation

is the Gospel. We remember the Good News that Christ died for our sins. Each week, we are remembering that each one of us is a sinner, and we’re saved by God’s grace. People are coming to Proclamation and finding healing and hope and stability in their Christian life.”
Before becoming associate pastor, Gingrich served as a pastoral intern with Proclamation, and the church is working on growing the internship program, which prepares men for ministry.
The church wants to be a good neighbor, De Bruin said, whether that means supporting a community organization or equipping its members to love their actual neighbors in word and deed.
De Bruin noted that he
typically preaches through the books of the Bible, most recently focusing on Romans. “Romans 15:7 says, “Welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you for the glory of God,’” he shared. “If someone is thinking about coming to Proclamation, we would want them to know they’d be welcomed with open arms.”
Proclamation holds services on Sundays at 10:30 a.m., preceded by Sunday school for people of all ages at 9 a.m. A 6 p.m. service is also held on the second and fifth Sundays of the month, and the church will hold vacation Bible school this summer in late July. Spring road safety urged
Pennsylvania farmers are returning to their fields for spring planting, which means that drivers should be alert for large farm equipment on rural roadways.
As part of Rural Roads Safety Week, April 14 to 20, Pennsylvania Farm Bureau and its partners in the state government encouraged motorists to be cautious on roadways. Each year, Pennsylvania Farm Bureau partners with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and Pennsylvania State Police to spread the message of staying safe on rural roads during the height of the spring planting season. Farm equipment can legally be operated on roadways, including at night, but farmers are required to follow certain safety guidelines depending on the size of equipment moved. All farm equipment that travels at speeds less than 25 miles per hour is required to have a slow-moving vehicle emblem - an orange triangle with red outline - on the back of the equipment.
If drivers see the slow-moving vehicle emblem, they should slow down immediately. Drivers should be alert that farm equipment may be turning at an unexpected
place, such as into a field, and may be making a wide left turn if it pulls to the right. Drivers should always be sure the oncoming lane is clear and visible before passing large equipment, and they should never pass in a no-passing zone or within 100 feet of any intersection, railroad grade crossing, bridge, elevated structure, or tunnel. Drivers are also reminded to be patient, wear a seat belt, and not drive impaired or distracted.
PFB, along with representatives from PennDOT, the Pennsylvania State Police and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, as well as state Sen. Wayne Langerholc Jr., held a demonstration and event promoting Rural Roads Safety Week at Bill and Joyce Krug’s Farm in Loretto on April 15. County farm bureaus across Pennsylvania also hold local events in their communities to promote safe driving on rural roads.
For additional information about Rural Roads Safety Week and safety tips for drivers and farmers, visit www.pfb.com/ RRS.
