Bible2School teaches children through school-year and at-home programs.
Bible2School has a mission to introduce elementary school students to Jesus through programs held off-site during the school day. When summer rolls around, the program continues to support families looking for Christian-focused curricula and resources. The organization offers a podcast, a blog and a variety of at-home resources.
“We are going on three years of doing a weekly podcast,” said Megan Risser, director of marketing and advancement officer for Bible2School. “It’s released on Tuesdays, and each week we chat with a different guest regarding a variety of topics, but they are all ways of sharing God’s Word with kids.” Topics on the “You CAN Tell the Children” podcast have
ranged from praying for your child’s future spouse to establishing family devotion time.
“Each episode is under a half hour, and we don’t do ads,” Risser explained. “In the middle of each episode, we take a short break, and we answer a question from a Bible2School kid.” These prerecorded questions could include inquiries such as “How do I get to heaven?” or “If God created everything, who created God?” she said.
Once a month, Bible2School updates its blog with topics similar to the ones covered in the podcast. “Some people prefer to read, some prefer to listen, so we’re looking at different types of ways to get our resources out to people,” Risser said. “We want to offer practical, useful topics.”
Bible2School at-home resources
include a mix of materials created in house as well as links to partner organizations that share a similar mission.
“We want to provide free resources that can make learning about the Bible easy at home,” Risser said, noting that resources include crafts, skits and science experiments. “We provide all of the instructions for the activity, and most include a guided conversation. We want to give parents exactly what they need to connect the dots for their kids.”
Most of the at-home resources are geared toward elementary school-age children, since Bible-
BY CATHY MOLITORISOne red rose holds a lot of history for Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church. The church, located at 2 S. Hazel St., Manheim, has been paying “rent” of one flower every year since 1892.
The 132nd celebration of the Festival of the Red Rose will be held on Sunday, June 9. The festivities will include a worship service and payment of the rent, beginning at 10:30 a.m., with pastor Kathryn Warn presiding. Prior to the service, refreshments, sponsored by the Manheim Historical Society, will be served in the church’s rose parlor. According to church archives, on Dec. 4, 1772, Henry William Stiegel and his wife, Elizabeth Holz Stiegel, conveyed to their fellow Lutherans a plot of ground on the corner of Wolf and East High streets to build a church, said Linda Keiffer,
Rose Festival committee chairperson. The deed in part reads, “for and in consideration of the sum of five shillings yielding and paying unto Henry William Stiegel, his heirs or assigns at the said town of Manheim in the month of June, yearly forever hereafter the rent of One Red Rose if the same shall be lawfully
BY JEFF FALKWorld hunger isn’t a food shortage problem. World hunger is a logistical difficulty, a supply problem.
Working together, a pair of local nonprofit organizations have come up with a solution that is making a real difference in
it’s the distribution,” said Jeremy Frith, the CEO of Barnabas Aid, an international nonprofit headquartered in Lancaster. “We’re trying to address that problem. It’s a distribution issue, but it’s also an educational issue. We need a change of mindset. We have so much food and people don’t think about it, and when it goes into landfills, it creates problems. That food could be feeding somebody.”
Near the end of 2022, Barnabas Aid, which is located at 80 Abbeyville Road, Lancaster,
approached Blessings of Hope, 500 Becker Road, Leola, about the possibility of donating a $90,000, 20-square-foot commercial food dehydration unit to its ministry. Fresh fruits and vegetables are placed in the unit, which preserves the produce’s nutritional value and extends its shelf life by five years.
From the process, the organizations concocted a dehydrated soup mix that can provide one meal for up to 12 people.
“Our ministry’s mission is to help suffering Christians around the world,” said Frith. “The goal is to get food to places where it’s basically nonexistent. We’re feeding people who need food. We’re doing it because we’re directed to
do so in the Bible. We want to help as many people as possible. The suffering in the world is getting worse. We have a duty to help our brothers and sisters the best we can.”
In November of 2023, the Barnabas Aid-Blessings of Hope collaboration sent out its initial container load of donated food - valued at $250,000 - to Haiti. The second container load of donated food is currently being prepared for shipment to Cuba.
“In the United States, an estimated 80 billion pounds of food is wasted each year, which equates to 242 pounds per person,” said Frith, a resident of Lancaster. “Forty percent of America’s annual food supply is wasted. When
we go to a restaurant, we get huge portions of food.
But it’s not just a United States problem. A lot of food is wasted in the Western world. Globally, 1.3 billion tons of food is wasted each year.”
Frith said that Blessings of Hope receives so much donated food from farmers, supermarkets and distributors that it is sometimes forced to turn it away. Unused food usually ends up as animal feed or is dumped in landfills.
“We knew the partnership would work,” said Frith. “Blessings of Hope has so much food coming in. A lot of it is food that’s going to go by the wayside if not used.”
More than just work, the partnership between
Barnabas Aid and Blessings of Hope has blossomed. It’s a joint venture that has produced a winwin situation.
“It’s been great to have this partnership,” said Frith. “Blessings of Hope has the facilities, and they also have the volunteers. We have the international connections. We know where the food is needed. It enables our participants to realize they are really making a difference. It’s a way for Americans to feel they’re part of the solution, not part of the problem.”
“Now what we want to do is scale this up,” Frith added.

Originally starting as the dream of a young, married couple with a 9 month old baby - a business of their own, a place to call home - and so Jim and Sharon opened Jim Roberts Western Auto in June, 1974 in their new hometown of Mount Joy. In the beginning, the product selection was more of a general store - appliances large and small, electronics, toys, bikes and accessories, mowers and garden tools, paint and automotive (a very small section). The store moved from the small space at 18 W. Main St. next door to its current location (and former G.C. Murphy) in 1982 and the garage was built in 1985. Over the years, the main focus was shifted to automotiveboth retail over the counter sales of parts and accessories and even more to the tire and service center. The name was changed to Jim Roberts West Main Auto as Western Auto Supply Company closed in 2003. Throughout the years, Jim Roberts West Main Auto has helped and serviced multiple generations of families - seeing kids become parents become grandparents. One of the newest resources from Bible2School is a 22-page guide called “God Was Not Taken Out of Public Schools.”
“This is a downloadable tool to educate parents and caretakers on ways their child can confidently live out their faith in public school,” Risser explained. “A lot of parents don’t understand what their kid can do in a public school setting when it comes to their faith, and we’re on a mission to teach people. People feel like they need to leave their faith at the door, and that’s not the case.”
Bible2School began 45 years ago in Manheim Central School District.

The program has grown to more than 100 classes at 45 schools throughout Lancaster County, and the organization has expanded to include programs in Idaho and Tennessee, as well.
“We want to create a program in every state, but we also know that our roots are here in Lancaster. There’s still a significant number of people who have not heard of us or don’t know about our program,” Risser said. “There are kids who are our neighbors who have never heard of Jesus, and we are working to change that.”

Henry William Stiegel was called “Baron” by the townspeople due to his extravagant and flamboyant lifestyle. He was also a churchman, accomplished musician, ironmaster, glass manufacturer and founder of the town of Manheim.
It is believed that Stiegel himself collected the rent payment in 1773 and 1774; however, after he suffered dire financial losses and spent a brief incarceration in debtor’s prison in Philadelphia, the payment of the rent of one red rose dwindled into obscurity.
When a new church building was under construction in 1891, the original deed was discov -
ered and Dr. J.H. Sieling, a local doctor and member of the congregation, proposed an all-day program to commemorate the payment of the red rose if an heir of Stiegel could be located. On June 4, 1892, John Calvin Stiegel of Harrisonburg, Va., greatgreat-grandson of Henry William and Elizabeth Holz Stiegel, and his wife, Maggie, traveled to Manheim to receive the red rose payment. The celebration and rose payment became a tradition, and each year on the second Sunday of June the Lutheran congregation pays the rent of one red rose to a selected Stiegel heir.
This year, Karen Woltz of Leesburg, Va., a ninth-generation family
member of Henry William and Elizabeth Holz Stiegel, will accept the red rose payment on behalf of the Stiegel family. Woltz has lived most of her life in northern Virginia. She attended Fairfax County Public Schools and graduated from Mary Washington College in Virginia and Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. Prior to retirement, she was a government contractor for General Dynamics Information Technology.
Attorney J.D. Young Jr. from the law firm of Young & Young in Manheim will serve as Zion’s legal representative to oversee the signing of the rent book by this year’s Stiegel heir. “I would encourage
The Manheim Historical Society has announced its June events.

Story hours will be held at 1:15 and 3:15 p.m. Nick DiSanto, a one-man band, will perform from 2 to 3 p.m. House tours will also be available.
On Sunday, June 16, a program will be held at the Manheim Railroad Station, 210 S. Charlotte St. Guest speaker Mike Gerhard will present a program at 2 p.m. about dowsing, also known as “witching,”
which is the practice of using a pointer to locate underground items.
The program on Sunday, June 30, will also be at the Manheim Railroad Station. A living history program, “A Conversation with Ben Franklin and His Friends from Paris,” will be presented at 2 p.m. by Craig Hall. Re-enactors will also portray the German regiment of the Continen-
