The seventh annual hymn sing will be held at the 1871 Historic Wenger Meetinghouse, 16 Supervisors Drive, Jonestown, Lebanon County, on Sunday, June 12, at 2:30 p.m. Hymns from the 20th century, when the Wenger Meetinghouse was in use by the United Zion Church, will be sung a capella.
All are invited to attend the event, which is under the leadership and direction of Bob Kettering of Manheim. Kettering is a retired pastor in the Church of the Brethren denomination and is known for leading hymns in congregations, his participation with the quartet The Ministers of Music, and his involvement with Mount Gretna Camp Meeting.
The meetinghouse will open at 2 p.m. During the hymn sing, a freewill offering will be received to support the ongoing expenses related to the upkeep of the meetinghouse.

Occupational Development Center (ODC) executive director Gregg Richards presented the 2022 Olivia S. Stoner Awards on March 25, including awards that were originally scheduled to be given in 2020 and 2021. Created in 2019, the awards are given to individuals and businesses that “embody the spirit and mission of the ODC and cofounder Olivia S. Stoner and her commitment to creating a better life for individuals with developmental disabilities.”
Awards were presented to Anna Wilson, posthumously; Jennifer Douglas; and Wile Plumbing. In addition to a plaque, each honoree was given an original painting by one of ODC’s participants through the art program at Friendship Heart Gallery & Studio.
The Wilson family has been involved in the ODC for nearly 40 years. Two of Anna’s sons have been participants at ODC - current participant Vince, who accepted the award on his mother’s behalf, and the late Rodney Wilson. Anna died in 2020. At the Stoner Award ceremony, the Wilsons were given a painting by Mary Lou.
The Douglases have been involved with the ODC since 1990 when their son, Kirk, became a participant. During her family’s involvement with ODC, Jennifer has been active in the organization’s day-today activities, particularly the Parents Group. In recent years, she has headed up the Parents Group and has served on the ODC board of directors. Kirk continues to participate in ODC programs. Jennifer Douglas was presented with a painting by Vince.
Wile Plumbing is a local, second-generation, familyowned business that has been a part of the ODC community for a number of years. Initially, the business, now run by Jon and Becky Wile, helped with various building-related needs. A few years ago, Jon was invited to become a member of the board of directors. Shortly after that, he discovered that his Aunt Joanne, who had an intellectual disability, was one of the first four students at the Child Development Center, the predecessor to the ODC. The Wiles were presented with a multimedia painting by Randy.
To watch the award ceremony, visit https://odcenter .org/blog/odc-gives-out-2022 -stoner-awards/.
Previous winners of the Stoner Award are Ben and Mignon Bowman and Kinsey’s Outdoor.
Starts Saturday, June 18 Saturday, June 18th th thru Saturday, July 2 Saturday, July 2nd nd

Since 2012, Rainbow’s End Youth Services (REYS) has been giving away backpacks filled with school supplies to students in grades one through 12. To prepare for this year’s giveaway in August, the center’s staff members have refocused their efforts.
“People have wanted to know how to help with our backpack distribution, and they’ve donated so many school supplies, which we really appreciate,” said Cristina Paden, executive director of REYS. “We want to make sure every student gets the same thing, and we realized, ‘What is our biggest need? We need the backpacks themselves.’”
To reach its goal of providing plenty of backpacks, REYS is holding the Summer Sprint to 600, a backpack donation competition. “We want a lot of variety for the students to choose from and not have them come in and see 200 of the same backpack, because that’s discouraging to kids,” Paden explained. “We’re inviting area groups, churches, organizations, businesses and families to come together to purchase and donate new backpacks for our distribution.”
The organization’s goal is to collect 600 backpacks, since that’s the average number that REYS gives away each year. Although the official distribution dates are in August, REYS supports local students year-round. “We have a great relationship with the local school social workers, so if a request comes through for a backpack during the school year, the answer is always ‘yes,’” Paden remarked.
The team that collects the most backpacks will receive special recognition, she said, encouraging everyone to help with the effort. “The heartbeat of the backpack distribution at REYS is we want to see every student flourish,” Paden commented. “One piece is helping them be ready for the academic school year ahead, and being prepared with a backpack and school supplies makes a big difference in how the school year goes for them.”
REYS exists with a mission to support students in Christian love through after-school programs, academic assistance, music instruction and more. The Summer Sprint to 600 is an invitation for the community to be a part of that mission, Paden stated. “We want to invite community members to walk alongside the students, and one way they can do this is by providing backpacks,” she said. “It’s an easy way to help.”
Backpacks may be dropped off at REYS, 105 Fairview St., Mount Joy, on Mondays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The deadline for donations is Friday, July 29. For more information on the Summer Sprint to 600, visit https://reys.org.
