Celebrating five decades of service
BY CATHY MOLITORIS“Any definition of a full and productive life must include service to others.” Those words from a proclamation by Sen. Ryan Aument perfectly describe Walter and Louise Gerhart.
The Manheim couple have dedicated more than 55 years of service to the Manheim VFW Post 5956. On June 1, they were treated to a surprise party honoring their commitment to the post.
“Without Walt and Louise’s steady hand, we wouldn’t be where we are today,” said post commander Craig Fisher. “Thank you for everything you have done for us.”
During the party, held in the community room of the post, 149 S. Charlotte St., Manheim, the Gerharts were toasted with words of praise from Tracy Tunstall, president of the auxiliary; Joan Faddis, district auxiliary president; and Barbara Loncar, VFW state commander.
“We are honoring both of you today for your service,” Tunstall said, noting that the Gerharts live across the street from the post and could always be counted on to pitch in wherever needed. “I’m pretty sure Louise has cleaned a toilet or two here. She’s mopped the floor. I don’t think there’s much Louise has not done in this room. Words cannot express the knowledge that has come out of this woman and this man. And they’re still teaching us.”
Faddis said she’s known Louise for 47 years and was honored to present a citation of congratulations from the state auxiliary.
“Your untiring work of service and sacrifice is unmeasurable,” she told Louise.
Loncar presented a certificate
of special recognition, telling Walt, “We honor your service, your courage, and most of all, your sacrifice.”
Walt served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was discharged as a corporal and worked for many years for an asbestos plant in Manheim.
Walt and Louise are the parents of three children. They have nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. They have been married for 58 years.
During his time at the post, Walt held every post position, including serving as commander twice. He’s been the post quartermaster on and off for the past 25 years and served as post chaplain, and he was instrumental in supporting the VFW youth baseball program in Manheim. Louise has served as state historian for the
auxiliary and as auxiliary district president. She currently serves as chair of the trustee, scholarship and hospital committees at the post.
“Walt and Louise have made a
difference both in Manheim and at the state level,” Fisher said as he presented a proclamation from Manheim mayor Scott Funk. Fisher also presented Walt and Louise each with proclamations
BY JEFF FALKLong’s Park has a history with music in Lancaster.
It’s a history of culture. It’s a history of diversity. It’s a history of symbiosis.
It’s a history that continues to evolve.
The 62nd season of the Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation’s (LPAF) Summer Music Series is upon us. More than bigger and better, this Summer Music Series is as varied as ever.
“What we’re trying to do is bring diversity in genre and people from different areas of the world to Lancaster,” said Kristin Chronister, LPAF’s president-elect. “I think rather than top ourselves each year, we’re looking for high-end music we haven’t showcased in a while. We’re looking for different themes in order to bring different kinds of music to Lancaster. It’s more about, ‘Let’s do something different and have fun.’”
This summer’s music series, which includes 12 concerts at Long’s Park Amphitheater, 1441 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, will feature artists performing genres of music from American rock to gospel rock, from the blues to bluegrass, from country to pop rock. All of the shows will be performed on Sundays starting between 7 and 8 p.m., and most of the concerts last from 90 minutes to two hours.
The sponsor-supported, publicly funded, all-weather shows are free to attend.

City of Lancaster issues call for artists
The City of Lancaster has issued a request for qualifications for illustrators and graphic designers to develop a cartoon character, Rosie the Fish, for the city’s River Connections project. River Connections is intended to cultivate a greater sense of stewardship and community around the Conestoga River and advocate for its care and repair.
The City of Lancaster is
seeking a qualified artist to develop a Rosie the Fish cartoon character and coloring sheets for the web and print. Rosie the Fish will be an animated ambassador to educate the public, specifically school-age residents, about the river and the work done through the River Connections project.
This opportunity is open to all professional artists and teams of people age 18 and older. The submission deadline is Monday, June 24. The City of Lancaster anticipates an artist will be selected by Friday, July 19. The selected artist will have a budget of $3,000 to complete the work.
To view the full request for qualifications, visit www.cityoflancasterpa .gov/office-of-public-art.
Launched in 2022, the River Connections project has sought to elevate the stories of Lancaster’s black and brown communities’ relationship with the Conestoga River through storytelling in spoken word, visual art, film, and music. HARTZ PT Day celebrated
Lancaster mayor Danene Sorace declared May 10 HARTZ Physical Therapy (PT) Day and surprised founder and owner Brian Hartz and his wife, Amy Walker Hartz, CFO of the practice, and their staff with a proclamation just before their third annual Spring Swing Golf Tournament at Crossgates Golf Club.
All proceeds from the tournament benefited Off the Streets, an all-volunteer organization that has assisted more than 5,070 men, women and children since 2013 to access permanent housing. The entirety of the proceeds will help to finance security deposits for those referred by social services. The HARTZ team has also joined Off the Streets volunteers on numerous moves helping to deliver furnishings and set up the homes for those who were formerly homeless.
For the past 24 years, HARTZ PT has developed a physical therapy practice with six offices and 42 employees. Brian and Amy are also committed to serving local communities. Together with the employees they motivate and through their HARTZ
Physical Therapy Charitable Organization, the Hartzes spend an average of 50 volunteer hours and contribute more than $1,000 per employee in support of local Lancaster charities each year.
HARTZ PT staff members have volunteered their time cleaning parks and adopting a local highway and they started Equipped for Life, a free medical equipment loan program. They have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars hosting events for local nonprofits and have volunteered for and participated in their numerous missions and fundraising events.
HARTZ’s signature Fall Blast 5K has raised more than $315,000 in the past 20 years benefiting A Week Away, Benchmark, Gigi’s Playhouse, Off the Streets, Power Packs, Hospice of Lancaster County, The Lancaster Science Factory, Girls on the Run and Aaron’s Acres. In addition, the practice’s annual Feed the Need Spring Food Drive has collected thousands of pounds of food for Water Street Mission, Power Packs and Arch Street Center.
In April, HARTZ PT hosted its second annual Parkinson’s Community Walk attended by 175 walkers. The event was created through the Red Rose Parkinson’s Support Group. which the Hartzes helped form.

from Sen. Aument.
Before the party guests enjoyed a spaghetti dinner, Fisher made one more presentation to the Gerharts: He gave them a plaque engraved with their names that will be displayed in the community room. “We are naming this room after you two,” he told the couple. “We cannot thank you enough for everything you have done for this post.”
The Gerharts said they were completely surprised by the party. “I thought we were coming for a celebration for Walt, and he thought we were coming for a party for Craig,”
Louise said with a laugh. “Everyone blew us away with this.”
Some of the couple’s family attended the party, and the pair enjoyed socializing with post members and friends.
“I’m really overwhelmed by this,” Walt said. “It’s very nice.”
Service to the VFW is something Walt said just comes naturally to him, and he’s glad he’s been able to give back for more than half a century.
“I do it because of all the good things we as an organization can do for our veterans,” he said. “It’s important.”

Native plant kit sale posted
To help nurture more watershed-friendly properties, Penn State Extension will offer the Master Watershed Steward Watershed-Friendly Native Plant Kit Sale through Tuesday, June 18.
The kits are designed to help individuals incorporate more native plants into their property. The pickup locations include sites in Berks, Chester, Cumberland, Delaware, Lancaster, Montgomery, and York counties.
The kits contain plant plugs carefully selected from species grown by Kind Earth Grower using locally collected, open-source pollinated seeds and 50% peat-free growing media. Plant plugs are smaller than those typically found in nurseries, allowing for easier transportation and planting within existing vegetation. The plugs have healthy root systems that should establish this fall so plants can flourish next growing season.
The kit options are the Sunny Soggy Bottoms Kit and Shady Soggy Bottoms Kit for wetter-soil areas as well as the Wildlife Magnet Kit, which contains generalist plants that provide food and habitats for numerous pollinators and wildlife. All three kit options are available in two sizes. Bountiful Kits include five species with five individual plants of each species, for a total of 25 plants. Container Kits include five species with one plant of each species,
for a total of five plants. Individuals may choose their kit and select the pickup location most convenient to them. Proceeds will support the Master Watershed Steward program in providing volunteer-driven education and restoration work in the customer’s region.
More information about the plant kit sale is available at https:// extension.psu.edu/ mws-native-plant-kit-sale.
Penn State Extension also offers the opportunity to earn the Master Watershed Steward watershed-friendly certification in collaboration with Nurture Nature Center. Native plants are woven throughout the certification criteria.
UDSF receives grant
UDS Foundation (UDSF), a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of older adults and individuals living with disabilities, has been selected as a grant recipient by the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF). The grant, totaling $25,000, was awarded during the Well-Being & Vibrancy Event held at Buchanan Park on April 20.
The funds will support UDSF’s CAPABLE Program. Spearheaded by Shauna Buchmoyer and Marie Olmand, the program aims to empower individuals and enhance their well-being through a variety of services and support systems. With the funding provided by LCCF,
UDSF will be able to further its mission to increase mobility, functionality, and capacity so that older adults can age in their homes and communities.
The LCCF, celebrating 100 years of impact, launched the Shaping Tomorrow Awards to inspire innovative projects that will continue to benefit the community for the next century. Through this initiative, LCCF invested more than $1 million in Lancaster County, with a focus on four broad categories: creative expression, well-being and vibrancy, our planet, and next generation. UDSF was selected as a recipient of a well-being and vibrancy grant.
