Manheim VFW Baseball Tournaments Honor Area Veterans On Father’s Day, June 16, the annual Manheim VFW Baseball tournaments wrapped up at the Pool Field Complex. Six tournaments were held over the course of three weekends, beginning on May 31, with games held at various fields in Manheim Borough. Forty-six teams with players ages 8 to 12 traveled from throughout Lancaster, York, Berks, Juniata, and Lebanon counties to participate in a grand total of 86 baseball games. The Manheim VFW teams combined for a record of 17 wins, 8 losses, and 1 tie. Trophies and medals were awarded to the top two teams in each tournament bracket. While the Manheim VFW teams saw a lot of success, only the 12U3 team brought home the gold. The 2019 Manheim VFW Baseball tournament champions were as follows: 8U - Northern Lebanon; 10U2 Ephrata; 10U1 - Mountville; 12U3 -

Manheim VFW; 12U2 - Wilson; and 12U1 - Mifflin. One of the highlights of each tournament and a tradition that started three years ago is an opening ceremony with a ceremonial first pitch by an honored guest. On May 31, the 8U/10U2 tournament began with United States Army veteran John A. Gantz throwing out the first pitch. Catching the first pitch was his grandson, Landon Hess. In 1970, at age 19, Gantz was given draft number 46 during the Vietnam War Draft Lottery. He entered into boot camp at Fort Dix in New Jersey and was then sent to Thailand to operate in communications. Eighteen months later, Gantz was sent back to the United States to guard the Underground Pentagon as a Military Policeman. In 1973, he received an honorable discharge. Gantz continues to be active in his community by assisting friends See Manheim VFW Baseball pg 8

fun. AHG Troop PA0412 meets every other Monday evening from September through May at Lake View Bible Church. During the Court of Awards ceremony, the girls received the badges, patches, and service stars that they had earned since the start of 2019. Service stars are awarded for different hours of service depending on the girl’s age. Troop PA0412 had a combined total of 225 hours of service, and 110 badges were earned by completing requirements set by the national organization. The evening opened and closed with a flag ceremony led by the girls. The Sacagawea Award, a special level recognition for the Tenderhearts (ages 6 to 9), was awarded to Jamie Black of Leola, Jocelyn Coulson of Lancaster, Emma Creighton of Manheim, Lylii Funk of Elizabethtown, Lila King of Lancaster, and Delaina Rohrer of Lancaster. To earn the Sacagawea Award, girls must earn at least one badge from each of the six frontiers: Heritage, Family Living, the Arts, Outdoor Skills, Personal Well-Being, and Science and Technology; perform a minimum of five hours of service for each year of participation; attend multiple special events; make a presentation showcasing what they love about AHG and display it in a public place for two weeks; and attend a meeting and special event with the Explorers (ages 9 to 12). Finally, they must participate in an interview called the Board of Review with three or four adults from the troop. Mya Higgins earned the Harriet Tubman Award, which is the level award for Pioneers (ages 12 to 14). Mya is the daughter of Brad and Tammy Higgins of Lancaster. For this award, a girl must earn a minimum of one badge from each frontier at the Pioneer level, perform a minimum of 15 hours of service for each year of participation, attend multiple special events,

and mentor a younger unit or group by holding a regular meeting as well as planning and organizing a special event for that group. Additionally, she must spend a minimum of 10 hours in planning, organizing, and implementing a multi-troop or community outreach activity. The final step is a Board of Review interview. Mya worked to help the younger girls earn their PRAY patch by holding a regular meeting during which she taught the Parable of the Fig Tree and prepared a corresponding craft for the Explorers, Tenderhearts, and Pathfinders. For her special event, Mya planned a Veterans Day flag

“This year’s theme is family fun,” said Holly DeKarske, executive director of Venture Lititz and co-chair of this year’s July Fourth celebration with Lititz Springs Park, along with park board of trustees member Kellye Martin. The 202nd festival, which will be held on Thursday, July 4, will feature live music, special entertainment for children, a designated space for teenagers, an Eagles tribute band, and a chance to relax with family and friends in Lititz Springs Park, 18 N. Broad St., Lititz. The gates to the park, on Broad Street in Lititz, will open at noon on July 4.

Master of ceremonies duties this year will be performed by Jenna Martorana, who has experience as the 2019 Miss Liberty Bell. “She was formerly Miss Red Rose City 2018,” said Martin. “We are very excited to have Jenna be an integral part of the celebration in Lititz.” Opening ceremonies will be held at 1:30 p.m. Activities will begin in the KidsZone at 12:30 p.m. with a performance by Papa Tater, followed by a Springs Park Playhouse show at 2 p.m. At 3:30 p.m., children will be treated to the music of Ian Carroll. “He is a one-man band,” said DeKarske, who added that the interactive entertainer will bring bongos and tambourines so that children can take part in the show. Aware that many young people attend the event, organizers will set up an area specifically for teenagers and young adults. “The Lawn is a new area that we are adding this year,” noted Martin, who relayed that the new space is a response to feedback from the community. “The Lawn will be set up (for teenagers) from 5 to 8 p.m. around the Oehme Gazebo near the front of the park,” said Martin, who added that The Lawn will feature a coffee truck; casual, picnic-style seating; lawn games; and live music, along with other surprises for teenagers. The baby parade is a popular segment of the event. This year, registration for the parade will be held at 12:30 p.m., and the parade and judging will begin at 1:30 p.m. Baby parade winners will be announced at the band shell at 1:45 p.m.

Lititz Plans Fireworks, Music, And Fun

The July Fourth celebration in Lititz is known for live musical performances, and this year will be no exception, with several bands and other entertainers lined up for the event. The BANDALOW will play in the band shell at 2:15 p.m., and the Lititz Community Band will perform at 3:30 p.m. A tribute band called Best of the Eagles will play in the band shell at 5:30 p.m. Following the tribute band, the entertainment will move to the field at the Lititz recCenter, where the band Nearly York will play at 8:15 p.m., followed by a FUN 101.3 disc jockey dance party with Ronnie Ramone at 9 p.m. The 78th Queen of the Candles Pageant will be held in the band shell at 7:30 p.m., and the fireworks will begin at 9:30 p.m. The layout of the area where the fireworks will be set off will change significantly this year, according to Martin. “There will be a new gate to access the fireworks field at the Lititz recCenter,” said Martin. “The running of the blankets will take place from this gate beginning at 7:30 a.m. Guests coming in later in the day just for fireworks should use this gate. Other gates … will begin closing as early as 8 p.m.” Attendees will make their way to the field at about 8 p.m. so that park staff and volunteers can secure a safety area inside the park. “Maple Street will be closed to vehicles all day on July 4,” added Martin. “This will allow … guests to exit the field out onto Maple Street.” Martin emphasized that detailed maps, instructions, signage, and additional volunteers will be available to help attendees with questions. “We are always looking for more volunteers,” added Martin. “Volunteers get a free See Fireworks pg 12
