Creating a community of hope
BY CATHY MOLITORISThree years ago, Hope Served began with a vision of providing opportunities for people with disabilities. The organization is growing and thriving, meeting goals and connecting with the community.
There are three prongs to the Hope Served mission: housing, vocation and community, said executive director Steve Schwartz.
“Long term, we want to be helping families plan for housing needs,” he shared. “We want to help families consider creative options beyond a group home.”
While the housing goal is still a few years off from fruition, Hope Served is meeting its mission of creating community. The organization is in the process of buying the building where it operates at the former Manheim Mennonite Church, 201 W. High St.
“We want the focus of this building to be a community hub, with opportunities for creating jobs for folks with disabilities, paid employment opportunities and a place where people can develop their skills and uncover their gifts,” Schwartz said.
At the community hub, Hope Served plans to open an eatery that will serve the public and provide a teaching kitchen to help people with disabilities learn job skills.
“It will be a year-round teaching kitchen, focusing on customer service, basic cooking and kitchen skills, how to work on a team, how to be a good employee and so on,” Schwartz shared. “People will graduate from the program and be able to get jobs in the community.”
The restaurant and teaching kitchen will operate with the help of community partners, and plans are underway for
construction to begin by late summer, with a tentative 2025 opening date.
Hope Served also operates a Discovery Center at its hub, which Schwartz describes as an “incubator for microenterprises.”
These are small business ideas that help teach job skills and eventually create jobs for participants, focused on four areas: culinary/healthy living, arts/ handiwork, mechanical/technical and agricultural/horticultural.
The first microenterprise is Hope Served’s own branded coffee, Hope in a Cup, which the organization roasts and sells at events in town, including Manheim’s 1st Thursdays.
For the arts/handicraft sector, Hope Served has been offering card-making workshops for several months. Led by Janice
Garber, the workshops invite people to create greeting cards to then sell to the public.
Hope Served is in the process of recruiting volunteers to run microenterprises focused on the other two areas, mechanical/technical and agricultural/ horticultural.
“We’re looking for low-investment ideas,” Schwartz said. “We want these programs to be a place for people to try something new, to get out of the house and socialize. Maybe you’ll find an interest you didn’t know you would enjoy.”
Ultimately, the goal of the microenterprises is to get people into the workforce who might traditionally be marginalized. “One of our core values is co-creation,” Schwartz said. “We want people to co-create their future. We want people to have a say in what they
Flag football levels the playing field
BY JEFF FALKExercise is good for the body. Play is good for the soul. On the surface, the Chuckie Magee Flag Football and Cheerleading League for adults with disabilities is all about physical activity. But just below it resides elements of competition, socialization and fun.
“Everybody needs physical activity,” said Randy Samuels, a coach and the coordinator for the program. “A lot of these young people don’t get out as much as others. Some aren’t very fast, but we get them out there running and having a good time. They learn teamwork. They get to socialize with their friends.”
do. A lot of times, people with disabilities don’t have a lot of choice in their lives.”
Card-making classes and other programs operated through Hope Served are open to everyone, not just people with disabilities.
“We want to normalize folks with disabilities,” Schwartz said. “We want this to be a community hub, a place where people really belong.”
Schwartz noted that he’s looking for additional card-making instructors as well as other community partners who would be interested in working with Hope Served. For more information, email Schwartz at steve@hope served.org or call 717-689-7274.
For information on participating in upcoming card-making workshops, search for “Hope Served” on Facebook.
Affiliated with Aaron’s Acres, the Chuckie Magee Flag Football and Cheerleading League has opened registration through the early days of July and the program is looking for players, sponsors and volunteers. The program consists of a 10-game schedule and games are played indoors on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon from Aug. 3 to Nov. 2 at Manheim Brethren in Christ’s gymnasium, 54 N. Penryn Road, Manheim.
The program is open to individuals with disabilities ages 18 to 40 from Lancaster County. To register, go to www.aarons acres.org/programs/chuckie -magee-flag-football-cheer leading-league.
“It’s like sandlot football,” said Samuels. “We show up and play. We make sure everyone scores and everyone kicks off. There’s no tackling, no pushing, no shoving. We don’t keep

Gretna Music sets concert, kids’ activities
Gretna Music will present the Ulysses Quartet in concert on Sunday, June 30, at 7:30 p.m. The concert will take place at the Mt. Gretna Playhouse, 200 Pennsylvania Ave., Mount Gretna.
Founded in 2015, the Ulysses Quartet strives to perform and promote classical music from the past and present to expand understanding of the musical arts. The quartet consists of Christina Bouey and Rhiannon Banerdt on violin, Peter Dudek playing viola, and Grace Ho on cello.
The upcoming program will feature works by woman composers of the 19th and 20th centuries, such as Fanny Mendelssohn’s String Quartet in E Minor, a string quartet by Germaine Tailleferre, and the String Quartet in B Minor by Teresa Carreño. The Ulysses Quartet will also perform “Wild Summer” by living female composer Joan Tower.
Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and there will be First Listen performance at 6:45 p.m., featuring pianist Daniel Huang. First Listen programs present local youths in free mini-concerts before the mainstage concerts.
Additionally, the Ulysses Quartet will participate in two events in the kids’ music program GM4K. Both events are free and will take place in the Hall of Philosophy, 212 Gettysburg Ave., Mount Gretna.
On Saturday, June 29, at 2 p.m., “Around the World” will offer an opportunity for children to explore music from different parts of the world. Participants will be introduced to the concepts of rhythm, harmony, and style, along with string techniques, and they will learn about a variety of composers. This event is recommended for kids in
grades four through eight. The quartet will also be featured in “Animal Friends” on Monday, July 1, at 10 a.m. Children will learn about animal sounds and characters in music from different eras using concepts of texture and stringed instrument characteristics and techniques. This event is recommended for those in kindergarten through fourth grade.
To purchase tickets to the concert and for more information, call 717-361-1508 or visit www.gretnamusic .org.
score. We make sure everyone has fun.”
“It’s hard to describe; you’ve got to see it,” Samuels continued. “It’s two hours of action-packed football. There’s a lot of trash talking. These young people can give it good, but it’s all in good fun.”
Last year, the Chuckie Magee Flag Football and Cheerleading League consisted of two teams, 20 players and eight cheerleaders, affectionately referred to as “The Lancaster Sweethearts.” This year the program is hoping to grow the league to 40 players, enough for four teams.
“A lot of these young people want to play football,” said Samuels. “They can’t play football, so this is our way to get them to play.”
During the winter months, Aaron’s Acres, which is headquartered at 1861 Charter Lane, Suite 114, Lancaster, offers sports programs for adults with disabilities in floor hockey, kickball and soccer.
“When kids with disabilities hit age 21, there’s not a whole lot out there for them to do,” said Samuels. “We know there are young people out there who want to play football. Come join us. We want them to come out. We want to expand. We love what we do.”
The league is named for Chuckie Magee, a former Aaron’s Acres camper from Lititz who passed away in 2015. The program was started in his honor but only over the last three
years has it become associated with Aaron’s Acres.
“We talked to a couple of different organizations, and someone brought up
Aaron’s Acres,” said Samuels. “We contacted Risa (Paskoff, executive director) and she loved it.”
Samuels’ 27-yearold son R.J. has Down syndrome.
“I worked with special needs kids a long time ago, but other than that I didn’t have much interaction until my son was born,” said Samuels. “Honestly, if I didn’t have a son with Down syndrome, I wouldn’t be doing anything like this. It’s opened a whole new world for me.”
BBBSCR holds celebration and award ceremony
Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region (BBBSCR) hosted a graduation celebration and award ceremony at the State Museum of Pennsylvania on May 22 to recognize 90 graduating high school seniors in BBBSCR’s program. The organization recognized both mentees and volunteer high school mentors. The graduating seniors hail from 18 high schools
across Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry, and York counties. Among the recognized graduates are mentees who participated in BBBSCR’s Beyond School Walls workforce development program. The Beyond School Walls program connects high school students with mentors from area businesses and guides the students in developing professional
and life skills.
Four graduates addressed their peers and spoke about embracing leadership roles and the impact mentorship has had on the lives of all assembled. BBBSCR president and CEO Amy Rote also spoke to the graduates.
A total of $11,000 in scholarships was awarded to graduating seniors. These awards were BBB -

The rising 10th-grader at Manheim Central High School has only been trap shooting since in February when on a whim, he decided try the activity with four other Manheim Central students. Leonidas started trap shooting at an introductory program at the Palmyra Sportsman Association, and he was hooked.
Leonidas Neifert won several competitions at the Pennsylvania State Trap Shooting Competition.
He joined the Amateur Trapshooting Association (ATA) and began working toward being able to compete in the state event. To compete at the state level without receiving a penalty, participants must shoot 1,500 registered targets in singles competition and 1,500 registered targets in handicap competitions prior to the state events. Leonidas took part in his first registered shoot on Feb. 18, achieving his first 50 targets needed.
In a singles competition, participants shoot from five different angled positions that are 16 yards from the trap house. In a handicap competition, each participant’s distance from the trap house is based on his or her skill level. Leonidas is currently shooting from the 20-yard line, and he hopes to someday earn the distance of 27 yards.
Leonidas was the sub-junior champion in the Bradford Gun Club Single, where he shot 98 of 100 targets; the South End Gun Club Handicap, shooting 92 of 100 targets; and the Elysburg Handicap, shooting 92 of 100 targets.
He was the Academic, Integrity, Marksmanship (AIM) sub-junior champion runner-up in the Stephanie Wrisley Handicap, taking down 91 of 100 targets. AIM is the official youth program of the ATA.
He was also the sub-junior champion runner-up in the Krieghoff Handicap, shooting 85 of 100 targets. His participation in the Krieghoff event included a shoot-off with three other competitors.
In the Pennsylvania State Singles Championship, he took down 191 of 200 targets, making him the Class D champion. In the Pennsylvania State Handicap Championship, he shot 91 of 100 targets and was the sub-junior champion runner-up.
During the week, Leonidas was also able to shoot 75 clay birds in a row.
Leonidas has learned that competing in trap shooting sports is more of a mental game than a physical one. He also noted that trap shooting is an inclusive activity. He hopes that someday there will be a team in Manheim.
Leonidas plans to compete in the Maryland State Shooting Competition from June 26 to 30.

To us, the best means producing a truly authentic, premium product. We start with happy, healthy cows who live at our American Humane Certified™ dairy and focus on top-quality ingredients that result in superior taste you can savor. While you may be seeing more and more “frozen dairy desserts” on the shelf, we still offer REAL ice cream made with less air & higher milkfat for a creamy bite every time.
Try it for yourself and we think you’ll probably agree!
