“Parables of Jesus” tells stories from the Bible

“‘Parables of Jesus’ is a highenergy and humorous telling of the stories that Jesus told to His followers,” said Ashlee Heyward, team member, describing Piercing Word’s original production. “The piece gives the audience a fresh and everyday perspective of these stories told over 2,000 years ago, and we tell them word for word from the English Standard Version Bible. The Scripture is our script.”

“Parables of Jesus” will be performed at the Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim, at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 30, and at 3 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 1.

Renovations underway at Teen Central

TeenCentral in Manheim is undergoing a facelift, and the renovations are meant to reflect the spirit of the nonprofit organization.

“One of our goals at Teen Central is to provide a safe and welcoming atmosphere for students to come and gather while being surrounded by the love of Christ,” explained

“Our staff, volunteers and board members work hard to create a warm and inviting youth center that radiates value and hope to the youth of our community. The overall goal of the external renovations is to have the outside of our building reflect that same care, love and warm invitation that students receive when they walk through our doors and into our programming.”

The renovations began in May and are expected to wrap up in August. External and internal construction is currently underway at the building, located at 15 S. Wolf St.

“ We are doing a complete facelift to the outside of our building,” Heying shared. “We are having portions of the building stoned and stuccoed, replacing the majority of the exterior doors and a few

windows, adding a new mural on a more visible external wall, adding a larger canopy over the doors on the side of our building, painting the remainder of the building to give it a clean and crisp look, adding some stone and texture to our entranceway steps to make them safer and more attractive, redoing some electrical and updating/adding new lights and fixtures to the outside of our building.”

The stories are told with an African inspiration. “The use of African-inspired instruments and movement helps remind viewers of how beautifully diverse the church is,” Heyward explained. “In a season where we are seeing so much division and brokenness in our country when it comes to issues of race, we have a unique opportunity to celebrate and demonstrate our unity in Christ.”

The show will include stories of the sheep and shepherd, the Good Samaritan and the Prodigal Son, among others. “This show is both humorous and poignant and will leave you thinking deeply about the truths presented in a fresh way,” Heyward shared. “It’s a fun show that is perfect for the whole family.”

Teen Central board member Leon Huber (left) and executive director Janelle Heying show off some of the building’s exterior renovations.

She noted that multiple local businesses and individuals are completing the work, including Weiler’s Stone, HC Quality Doors, Stable Hollow Construction, Bill McFalls, LA Decks and Zeiset Electric. “Our board vice chair, Leon Huber, is also the head of our building committee and has done a fantastic job at arranging and managing this project,” Heying said.

Outside the building, Katherine and Jason Horst of Horst Arts are creating a mural. “We have given Kate and Jason an inspiration board, and they will be working together to create the complete image and final product,” Heying commented. “We haven’t seen what they have come up with yet, but if you’ve ever seen any of their work, you know it will be amazing.”

The interior of the building is also undergoing renovations. “The inside of our building is receiving some upgrades to our security system, along with relocat-

ing and adding some new outdoor cameras as well, with work by 3T Security, and we are having sound absorption panels added to our main gathering room and dining room (by) Stage Masters.”

During the summer, Teen Central continues its regular programming for youths in grades five through 12 as well as monthly events and field trips through July. The organization will close for the month of August but will reopen when the new school year begins.

An open house is being planned for the fall to showcase the renovations. It will most likely be held at the same time as Teen Central’s annual “Light the Night” event in October, Heying said.

“Parables of Jesus” invites audience members to watch as Jesus helps His followers understand the nature of the Kingdom of God and the value of following Him. “‘Parables of Jesus’ is woven together flawlessly,” shared Jeff Gibelius, pastor of Second Presbyterian Church in Carlisle. “It has a fascinating African production style to it that encourages viewing familiar stories in a new light.”

Piercing Word is a nonprofit ministry based in Lancaster with a mission “to ignite passion

for the Word of God in the heart of the church.” The organization has been performing Scripture in dramatic and musical presentations, word-for-word from the Bible, since 2007.

At Lancaster Science Factory, kids experiment in fun

More than some complex theory or fancy equation, science is a living, breathing application that helps us understand the world around us and how all of its moving parts interact.

At 454 New Holland Ave., Lancaster, science is manfactured, produced, nurtured. But it is also prodded, played with and learned.

This haven for experimentation is called the Lancaster Science Factory.

Housed in a repurposed industrial building, the Lancaster Science Factory is an interactive, hands-on center designed to spark an interest in science for children from prekindergarten through eighth grade and their families.

“Science is everything. It’s everywhere,” said Amanda Bakay, Lancaster Science Factory’s director of programs and communications. “It is the stuff that makes the world work. It’s about being curious and asking questions about the world around you. That’s what we’re doing here - letting kids discover science.”

The Lancaster Science Factory is 17,000 square feet of 65 engaging exhibits that fall into the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) category. Those exhibits specifically target areas of mechanics and motion, structural engineering, fluid dynamics, light and vision, acoustics, electricity, math and robotics and sustainable energy, just to name a few.

The main exhibit hall is supported outside by a 4,000square-foot, three-season courtyard.

But the Lancaster Science Factory also hosts classes, workshops, after-school programs, summer camps and

social events.

“We actively seek to make our programs accessible to everyone,” said Bakay. “The hook is that everything’s hands-on. I love seeing kids being super curious. It’s a really cool space, and the secret is that all of the stuff is fun for adults as well.”

In 2022, the Lancaster Science Factory hosted 50,000 guests, and Bakay estimated that number will rise to 60,000 this year. She also said that about a third of those visitors can be attributed to tourism, a third have resulted from school field trips and a third were local residents.

Lancaster Science Factory’s work is funded through admission fees, retail sales from its gift shop and donations from individuals and foundations. The museum staff is made up of 10 fulltime employees.

“We’ve been working hard to build the brand of the Lancaster Science Factory and make it a place to come,” said Bakay. “It’s truly a place for the community. It’s an asset for the community to take advantage of. It’s a resource.”

Through the inspiration of founder and former local advertising executive Jim Bunting, the Lancaster Sci-

ence Factory opened in 2008. The opening was financed through a $1 million capital campaign and supported by the work of volunteers. In 2019, the museum doubled the size of its exhibition hall.

“We’re still relatively young,” said Bakay. “When he was a kid, our founder, Jim Bunting, wished he had a place like this to help him learn. Over the years, our programming has grown a lot. We’ve added programs because that’s the demand we’ve been seeing.”

For additional information on the Lancaster Science Factory, go to www.lancaster sciencefactory.org.

Railroad Days frompg 5

The centerpiece of Reading Railroad Days is an enormous, detailed, HO-scale model train layout of the Reading Railroad, operated by members of the Reading Company Technical & Historical Society in the museum’s climate-controlled Rolling Stock Hall. Visitors also may view Reading Company equipment from the museum’s premier collection, including the 105-yearold tank engine No. 1251, multiple unit car No. 800, Crusader observation car No. 1 and the 1928 turntable.

Also, artist Peter Lerro will exhibit and sell his works from June 28 through July 2; the Perkiomen Railroad Historical Society will be on hand on Saturday, July 1; and the Brick Reading Railroad will display a Reading Railroad LEGO layout on Friday, July 7, and

Mennonite Life posts book auction

July 8.

In its heyday, the Reading Company was a multifaceted industrial giant. Originally established as the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad in 1833 to transport anthracite coal, the pioneering 94-mile line evolved into a corporation serving eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. Operations included coal mining, iron-making, canal and sea-going transportation and shipbuilding. With its great complex of shops for locomotive and car building and repair, and constant advances in railroad technology, the company held a position of leadership in the railroad industry for more than a century.

Mennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, will hold its annual book auction on Friday, July 14, at 6:30 p.m. The event will take place in the Mennonite Life Community Room and will feature a collection of rare and used books that will be up for bids.

Among the available books this year are several volumes that relate to local history and culture, such as Menno Simons’ “Opera Omnia” in its original leather binding and “Van de Historien der Martelaren” (“Of the History of the Martyrs”) in its original vellum binding. “Opera Omnia” was written in 1681, and “Van de Historien der Martelaren” was published in 1722; both tomes were scribed in Dutch. Other books available to purchase will include “The Earth Is the Lord’s” by John L. Ruth,

“Building on the Gospel Foundation” by Burdge and Horst and an 1849 edition of “Martyr’s Mirror” by Thieleman J. van Braght.

Bids may be placed online and by mail until Thursday, July 13, and the auction books will be displayed in Mennonite Life’s Collections Building in the weeks leading up to the event. For more information, visit https://mennonitelife.org/ events.

Mennonite Life hosts three annual book auctions, a tradition that began over two decades ago. The organization’s goals in holding the auctions include stories that span communities from around the world and encouraging the exchange of different cultures and histories. Although Mennonite Life was unable to hold as many auctions as usual during the COVID-19 pandemic, the auctions have returned to their regular schedule this year.

The organization acquires the books for the auction through a variety of sources. Book owners often consign their items to Mennonite Life in exchange for a percentage of the sale. Others donate books from their collections to benefit the organization, and books are frequently

decommissioned from the Mennonite Life Library to be sold in the auction.

“We tend to look for things that are Anabaptist-specific, but we have a wide variety of work,” said Kevin Bradford, Mennonite Life’s used book manager. “It’s incredible to touch and see history and how it impacts people.”

All of the funds raised from the auction benefit Mennonite Life and its mission to pre-

serve history. In addition to the auction, the organization hosts a book fair every year in September. “It’s interesting to see which books people go crazy for,” Bradford said. “It’s a lot of fun to have the general public come out and enjoy seeing these books.”

Falcons banded in educational event

In collaboration with the biologists from the Pennsylvania Game Commission, all three of Harrisburg’s young peregrine falcons (eyasses) were fitted with identification bands.

Banding provides biologists the ability to identify a specific, individual bird. It also can provide information on where the bird was banded, how old it was at banding, and its sex. Each young falcon was banded, weighed, and given a physical exam. All three had clear eyes and a clear throat, indicating they are free of trichomoniasis.

There are two males and one female. The males were banded 04/BZ and 23/CA, and the female was banded 05/BZ.

Yoga class, bluegrass jam planned

Governor Dick Environmental Center, 3283 Pinch Road, Mount Gretna, will offer two upcoming events. Activities are free and open to the public, but preregistration is required by contacting 717-964-3808 or

governordick@hotmail.com and providing a name and phone number in case the program is canceled. Attendees should meet at the Environmental Center.

Beginner Yoga, a slowpaced yoga class, will be

offered on Saturday, July 1, at 10:30 a.m. Attendees should bring a mat if they have one.

Music on the Porch will be held on Sunday, July 2, from 1 to 4 p.m. Attendees should bring a lawn chair for this bluegrass jam on the porch.

Summertime leisure activities

During the summer, many people have more time on their hands due to vacations from school and work and less hectic activity schedules, so this season often affords more time to relax and recharge. People may consider the following leisure activities.

Whether it is a pool, a lake or an ocean, the water beckons each summer. Simply sitting on a beach or beside a lake or pool can be a great way to pass the time without much stress.

Paddleboarding is another leisurely way to spend a summer day. Paddleboarding requires physical exertion, so this might not be the ideal activity for those looking to relax without lifting a finger.

However, paddleboarders typically take to the water when it is at its most calm, making this a great activity for those who want to capitalize on peaceful, serene summer vibes.

Few activities may be more relaxing than fishing. Although there are many different ways to fish, some of which require considerable physical effort, casting a line and waiting for a fish to bite is a relaxing activity. Additionally, spending time in nature has been found to reduce stress and lower one’s heart rate.

Books can make for good companions on warm summer afternoons. Reading is such a popular summer pastime that many bookstores set up displays featuring books that are

suggested beach reads, providing inspiration for individuals who are not sure which books to dive into. And much like other summertime leisure activities, reading has been linked to reducing stress.

On summer afternoons when it is raining or too hot outside, or when individuals simply want to spend some time indoors, they might consider visiting a museum. Many museums do not typically draw crowds in summer, making this an ideal season to visit. Many offer discounted prices to individuals like seniors and students.

Summer is a season of leisure, and there are many activities that align with that spirit of relaxation.
