Mt. Hope is a 50-bed skilled nursing facility and rehabilitation center with a mission of caring for residents regardless of their ability to pay. “It all started when God gave us the mission ‘to serve the least of these,’” recalled longtime board member See Barbecue pg 2

e are people who help people,” said Lynda Charles, co-founder and president of Help the Fight. “Our mission is as simple as that.” Help the Fight is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping anyone currently receiving breast cancer treatment or anyone in need of screening to detect breast cancer. The organization will host its 13th annual fundraising banquet on Saturday, Oct. 1, from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. The event will be held at Spooky Nook Sports, 75 Champ Blvd., Manheim. “This is our main fundraiser for the year, and it’s a blast,” Charles stated, adding that there are a number of giveaway drawings and other opportunities to win prizes. The evening also includes an all-you-can-eat buffet dinner as well as both silent and live auctions. “We will auction off everything from artwork to quality jewelry, gift baskets, designer handbags and destination trips,” Charles said. “We work really hard to get donations of

Charles noted that the annual banquet provides not only an opportunity to support the nonprofit, but also a chance to hear from some of the people who have been helped by the organization. “We usually have at least one patient speak,” she stated. “It’s very emotional when the crowd hears their story.” She noted that tickets are limited to 500 this year, to keep the event large enough to raise significant funds but small enough to still feel intimate. “It’s a casual event,” she said. “People can dress up if they want to, or they can dress casually and comfortably. It’s just a night of fun.” Help the Fight is also looking for volunteers to assist the organization year-round or specifically at the banquet. Charles held a bake sale and raised more than $9,000 with just three weeks to pull everything together. “The community was amazing with their support,” she recalled. “We saw that there was a want from people who wanted to help our cause and there was a need from people who needed our support.” Since then, Help the Fight has raised more than $1 million for cancer patients. “Unfortunately, too many people are affected by and afflicted with breast cancer,” Charles remarked. “It’s not just a patient disease; it’s a family illness. It affects the whole family.” Help the Fight provides financial support in a variety of ways tailored to each individual’s needs. “We help with what their greatest need is,” said Susie Dailey, patient coordinator. “It could be medical bills, rent, insurance, medication, transportation. and current Mt. Hope resident Bruce McMillin, who noted that the facility faced the challenge of operating successfully with 90% Medicaid state assistance when it became Mt. Hope in 2006. Together with B.W. Hambrick, lead pastor of Ephrata Grace Point Church, Bruce helped shape the dream that became Mt. Hope when the church purchased the 50-year-old Dunkard Brethren Church Home at 3026 Mt. Hope Road. Almost immediately, major repairs were needed, Bruce recalled. “But, as God promised, He kept us on a straight path, finances were provided, and again, year after year, the Lord supplied enough money to do it, one way or another,” Bruce stated. “God is so faithful to Mt. Hope.” Today, Bruce and his wife, Ginny, reside in an independent living cottage at Mt. Hope. Now in his early 90s, Bruce is proud of the success of Mt. Hope. He continues to spread the word about the facility’s mission and housing opportunities. “Many people think Mt. Hope is only nursing care and aren’t aware Mt. Hope has three duplexes for a
total of six independent living cottages on these beautiful grounds,” he said. “This community and the nursing care side is a wonderful, loving Christian environment where it’s personal here. Everyone knows everyone, enjoys one another, and looks out for each other. It’s such a small, home-like, friendly feel to it.” The community can help support the mission of Mt. Hope through participating in events including the pork barbecue. “We’re grateful for the blessing of this community,” said Kris Wilson, director of advancement. Preorders will be taken for meals and saved under the name provided when ordered. To preorder or for more information, call Wilson at 717-682-8026 or email advancement@mthope nazarene.org by Saturday, July 16. Extra meals will be available on-site while supplies last. No handling of money will occur on the day of food pickup. When picking up meals, customers may leave payment in a drop-box in the form of exact change or checks made payable to “Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community.” The cost of the meal is $17.

Last year’s event featured a drive-through pickup for homemade chicken corn soup, and this year, the committee is expanding the picnic to include lunch and kids’ activities. “The soup sale went fabulous last year, and we had a lot of new faces come through,” Ruhl noted. “We sold out by noontime.” Still, the congregation was eager to return to the picnic format that the church has held for more than 100 years, and the community was ready, too. “People were asking if we’d bring back the lunch this year,” Ruhl said.
“They missed it.” This year’s picnic will feature takeout chicken corn soup as well as a variety of lunch items, including hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, hot sausage sandwiches, desserts and beverages. The soup is the star of the show, Ruhl said, noting that volunteers will begin preparing more than 500 pounds of chicken on the Thursday before the picnic. “We’ll have a little more than 14 kettles of soup,” she remarked. Ruhl added that the committee is excited to bring back the picnic. “I know picnics might be a thing of the past for many people, but I believe there are still a lot of people out there in the com-

Exercise Ideas For Older Adults JOB FAIR ON JULY 13TH

11AM - 6PM AT 722 FURNACE HILLS PIKE LITITZ PA
Physical activity is vital to overall health. The World Health Organization (WHO) says limiting time spent being idle and taking advantage of opportunities to get moving even if it’s just a little bit of exercise - can go a long way toward improving overall health. In November 2020, the WHO released new exercise guidelines for people of all ages. Adults - including older adults and those with chronic conditions or disabilities should get between 150 and 300 minutes a week of moderate to vigorous aerobic activity. However, individuals with limited mobility due to age or
pre-existing medical conditions may wonder how they can meet these guidelines for exercise. Those with chronic pain or illness sometimes find that exercising for more than a few minutes can be challenging. Even brief periods of exercise can pay dividends, and there are various approaches people can take to work around mobility and other issues.
Work out in the water. Exercising in the water can assist with movement and reduce strain on the body. The Arthritis Foundation says the water’s buoyancy supports body weight, which minimizes stress on joints and can alleviate pain. Water provides gentle resistance as well - up to 12 times the resistance of air. That means it’s possible to build strength and muscle even just by walking Explore chair exercises. used in lieu of hand weights for many exercises and can be suitable for those who find barbells and dumbbells challenging to maneuver. Mind-body exercises are an option. Elder Gym, a fitness-fromhome service for seniors, suggests exercises like tai chi and yoga for those with limited mobility. These exercises integrate awareness of body movement with the exercise through coordinated breathing. The exercises encourage people to focus on slow, fluid movements and deep stretching. Seniors and others with limited mobility are advised to first discuss fitness regimens with a physician to get a green light to proceed. Then regimens can be started gradually and altered to become more vigorous as the body acclimates to exercise. People can increase duration and frequency as their strength and endurance builds.
Christmas In July Bazaar Scheduled Using resistance bands and doing chair exercises are ways for individuals with limited mobility to fulfill their weekly physical activity requirements.

its own social media accounts, and local governments and community groups often share information about sports leagues and other groups via social media. - Sign up for group outings. Communities often sponsor group outings to museums, theatrical productions, sporting events, and more. Signing up for a bus trip to a local museum presents a great opportunity to meet people who share one’s

Friends come in all ages, so don’t hesitate to invite younger or older acquaintances and colleagues over for dinner or on weekend excursions. Making friends after 50 can be challenging. However, various strategies can help people in this age group to connect with new people.

days, but the following strategies can help to build new friendships. - Identify interests. Fiftysomethings who have spent the last couple of decades building a career and raising a family can give some serious thought to their interests outside of work or passions they hope to pursue now that they have more time to commit to such pursuits. The more interested a person is in a given activity, the more likely he or she is to stick with it and possibly meet like-minded individuals who may become friends. - Utilize social media. In years past, men and women over 50 may not have had readily available tools to reach out and connect with new people. Social media has made it easier to build such connections. Even the most obscure passions likely have a social media group of locals devoted to them, and these groups can be great ways to meet new people. A local runners’ club may have

The early years of midlife are a hectic time for many people. Around the time people reach their late 30s and early 40s, many of them are balancing the responsibilities of a career and a family. But as people enter their 50s, some of those responsibilities may be less significant, leaving more time for recreational pursuits. Hobbies and other pursuits outside work are often more fun when enjoyed with friends. People over 50 likely recognize that it’s not always easy to make new friends, even though it’s beneficial to have supportive relationships in one’s golden years. A 2017 study from researchers at Michigan State University found that valuing friendships was a stronger predictor of health and happiness among older adults than valuing family. Making friends after 50 might not be as simple as it was during one’s school

By the time people reach their 50th birthday, many have begun to imagine what their life in retirement may look like. People may seek ways to reduce their financial load in anticipation of the day when they will no longer work. Cutting back need not be complicated, and the following are some simple ways for individuals to save money. - Address unsecured debt. Unsecured debt, which can include credit card balances and medical bills, tends to carry higher interest rates than debts that carry a collateral requirement. According to the Federal Reserve, roughly 12.5% of individuals over 50 still have student loan debt, which is another type of unsecured debt. If possible, people over 50 should pay off these debts immediately or make their best effort to pay extra each month so the debts are paid off as soon as possible. - Pay in cash. It’s not enough to simply pay off unsecured debt like consumer credit. It’s also important to stop accruing additional debt. Individuals over 50 should resist the temptation to use their credit cards, instead paying with cash or debit cards. Credit card debt is often characterized as a problem for young consumers, but a 2021 report from ValuePenguin found that the median credit card debt among individuals between the ages of 55 and 64 was higher than it was for consumers ages 35 to 44. Paying in cash, whether it’s with paper currency or a debit card, ensures you’re not digging yourself into debt. - Re-examine your housing
situation. Adults 50 and over who purchased their home in their late 20s or early 30s are likely nearing the maturity date on their mortgages. If so, paying a little extra toward the principal each month will help to pay off the mortgage a good deal earlier than paying the same amount you’ve been paying for years. Although paying extra money each month may not seem like reducing one’s financial load, it will do so considerably over time. For example, the financial experts at Wells Fargo note that individuals with a fixed-rate mortage loan of $200,000 at 4% can cut the term of that loan by more than four and a half years by paying as little as $100 extra each month toward their principal. Homeowners over 50 who have already paid off a significant percentage of their mortgage loans could bring these loans to maturity much sooner if they start paying more toward principal now. Since housing costs are many people’s greatest expense, removing a mortgage payment from your financial ledger by the time you reach 55 could create significant financial flexibility as you get closer to retirement. Individuals over 50 can utilize some simple yet effective strategies to reduce their financial obligations as retirement nears.

W hen Mark Mueller’s wife, Jackie, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 1998, the couple saw the diagnosis as an opportunity. “ We decided to treat this naturally as much as we could, without medication,” Mark recalled. “We did a lot of experimenting with nutrition and exercise to see what worked and what didn’t.” The result of their efforts became MS FitEffect, a free, 10-week fitness program for people with MS. The next session will run from Saturday, Sept. 10, through Saturday, Nov. 19, at Elizabeth-
town Fitness Club, 626 S. Market St. “I did not set out to do this. It sort of found me,” Mark said. After his wife’s diagnosis, Mark changed careers from operating his own woodworking business to become a personal trainer. “I have always loved fitness, so I got my personal training certification, but I had no idea of how to work with people with MS,” he explained. Through trial and error with Jackie, Mark created a program that has helped people improve their balance and strength. The couple created MS FitEffect in 2016, and the effort

We have watched them move from wheelchairs and walkers to standing, first steps, skipping and even running.” The Muellers offer the program once a year, and classes are capped at 20 participants. Because it’s free, people may only participate in one 10-week session. “They get a gym membership, and they get one-on-

Because MS affects everyone differently, programs are individualized, he explained. “This is for anybody at any age, at any stage,” he said. The goal of the program is to teach participants exercises they can continue on their own at home or at the gym after the session concludes. In the future, Mark would like to create a full online video library of exercises, which would be free to access, along with weekly podcasts or webinars with information on living with MS. Funding for MS FitEffect comes from community sponsors, including past participants. “About one-third of our sponsorships are from people who have gone through the program,” Mark
