Mystery and history etched into rocks

Archaeology will be the focus of a program at the Manheim Historical Society this month. Adam Zurn, founder of Uncharted Lancaster, will present “The Mysterious Petroglyphs of Safe Harbor”

on Sunday, July 21, at 2 p.m.

The program will take place at the Manheim Railroad Station, 210 S. Charlotte St.

“I will be recounting my expeditions down the Lower Susquehanna to explore the mysterious Native American petroglyphs hidden on the ancient

river at Safe Harbor,” Zurn said.

“These 1,000-year-old rock carvings represent the oldest humanmade artifacts in Lancaster County and one of the most significant archaeological sites in the northeastern United States. I will discuss their significance, possible meanings and some local

Old-fashioned fun will be in the spotlight when Ruhl’s Church hosts its annual community picnic. The fun will take place at the church’s picnic grove, 2766 Newport Road, Manheim, on Saturday, July 20, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“Our church picnic is a long-standing tradition that started over 100 years ago,” said Gail Ruhl, a member of the picnic planning committee.

“We feel that it is important to honor the traditions of generations gone by. It is our hope that our church and community will embrace this tradition and that it will continue on for many years to come.”

The picnic will feature homemade chicken corn soup, following a recipe that has been used for generations. Takeout soup

sales will begin at 9 a.m., and people are encouraged to bring their own container or buy the soup by the quart.

One of the five human senses, hearing is something that can be easily taken for granted. But for those who can’t hear, there’s an element of appreciation that inspires creativity, ingenuity and a manifestation of the human spirit.

Through a wealth of services and resources, the Lancaster Center of the Deaf & Hard of Hearing (LCDHH), located at 2270 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster, which is a subsidiary

of and overseen by Keystone Deaf & Hard of Hearing Services (KDHHS) of Reading, helps individuals with hearing loss learn to listen, communicate better and generally lead fuller lives.

LCDHH client services manager and language specialist Karen Pfortsch, who has been deaf since birth, was interviewed for this article with the help of sign language interpreter Kandy Reyes, KDHHS’ president.

“Deaf individuals are happy being deaf,” said Pfortsch. “We can do everything except hear.

We can drive; we can work. American Sign Language is a beautiful language. What’s important to us is our eyes and being able to see.”

At LCDHH, individuals with hearing loss and their family members are directly and indirectly connected with services like sign language interpreters, sign language education, hearing aids, speech therapy, amplifiers, closed caption video phones, doorbell signalers, smoke and fire alarms, workshops, community activities and social events.

Hard of Hearing, and Kandy Reyes, president of Keystone Deaf & Hard of Hearing Services, display the American Sign Language symbol for love.

approximately 80,000 Lancaster County residents have some sort of hearing loss.

People who are deaf or hard of hearing also employ lip reading, facial expressions and body language as ways to receive communications, but they are more informal and learned skills that are often less accurate than sign language.

“The goal is barrier-free services and community access,” said Pfortsch. “Our goal is to empower our clients with whatever services are needed. It’s like a one-stop shop. When a person comes in here, they need to discuss their needs with us. Some might be looking for a job, and we’ll connect them with employment agencies. Some people might be struggling with reading. Some people have limited language skills. Some might need to know how to get their pensions. We’ll get them connected to the right people. There are a variety of things we’ll do to get them help, and sometimes we do advocacy.”

LCDHH serves about 300 clients on a regular basis. According to numbers from a recent census,

“We are only scratching the surface,” said Pfortsch. “Some people have a mindset about deaf people from what they’ve seen on TV. They label all deaf people as ignorant. We have to work to prove ourselves because it’s considered a disability. But deaf people don’t think they’re disabled.”

KDHHS employs a total of 10 individuals, two of whom work out of the LCDHH office. LCDHH is a nonprofit that receives funding from donations, grants and fees from its interpreter services.

“We are known in the deaf and hard of hearing community,” said Pfortsch. “Some organizations know us, and they connect their clients with us. They’ll work with us and collaborate with us. But some people don’t know the services are available. We’re here. People are welcome to call us.”

legends surrounding the pictographs.”

Zurn, a technology teacher at Lampeter-Strasburg High School, has a passion for history. His interest in the Safe Harbor petroglyphs began about five years ago when he started searching for a lost cemetery in Shenks Ferry, the site of tombstones dating to the 1700s.

“In my research to find the graveyard, I repeatedly read about the Shenks Ferry People - a previously unknown tribe of Native Americans first discovered in Shenks Ferry - who are believed to have created the Safe Harbor pictograms,” Zurn explained. “The mystery and history etched into those rocks captivated me. I made it a point to locate these carvings by exploring the various rocks at Safe Harbor to find them. My adventures on the mighty Susquehanna have been a mix of thrilling exploration and detailed research. Today, I enjoy taking groups to see

the ancient rock art in the summer.”

Zurn offers guided tours by kayak to the petroglyphs.

While searching for the Shenks Ferry cemetery, Zurn created Uncharted Lancaster. This passion project has evolved into an opportunity to uncover and share pieces of history in Lancaster County and throughout the Susquehanna Valley. “Through articles, photographs and guided adventures, I like to explore historical sites and stories, bringing them to light for everyone to enjoy,” Zurn stated. “It’s a platform for local history enthusiasts to connect, learn and engage with our regional heritage in a fun and interactive way.”

Along with Zurn’s talk, the Manheim Historical Society will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. on July 21 for tours of the railroad station and exhibits, a model train display and trolley rides, weather permitting. Zurn said his presentation will

He also hopes his program will spark an interest in learning more.

“There is space to enjoy lunch either at picnic tables under the trees outside or inside the pavilion,” Ruhl said, adding that a playground is also on-site.

In addition to the picnic, the church will host worship services in the grove on Sundays from July 14 through Aug. 18.

“We will gather each night for a time of gospel music, worship, Bible-based messages and great fellowship for all ages,” Ruhl shared. “All are welcome.”

Speakers will be the Rev. Blaine Wenger on July 14, pastor Tim Fray on July 21, the Rev. Rob Timlin on July 28, Seth Achey on Aug. 4, the Rev. Rick Rimert on Aug. 11 and the Rev. Joe DiPaolo on Aug. 18.

Ruhl’s Church will host vacation Bible school (VBS) from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Monday, July 29, through Thursday, Aug. 1, with a theme of “Everest: Conquering Challenges with God’s Mighty Power.” VBS is open to children age 4 through fourth grade.

Ruhl hopes people will make time to attend the picnic or other church activities, noting that all activities offer opportunities for fellowship.

“Our annual church picnic is a way to reconnect with friends and meet new people in a casual environment,” she said.

“Grove services are a way to step back in time and worship as our parents, grandparents and great-grandparents used to.”

MANHEIM COMMUNITY

Child heatstroke prevention tips

As the weather gets warmer, the Municipal Emergency Services Authority of Lancaster County (MESA) reminds parents and caregivers to not leave children in hot cars. Vehicle-related heatstroke is one of the leading causes of noncrash, vehicle-related death for children age 14 and younger in the United States.

A busy parent or caregiver may unintentionally forget that a quiet or sleeping child is in the back of the vehicle. These deaths can even occur at home.

Internal vehicle temperatures can rise quickly and become up to 50 degrees warmer than outside air temperatures. So

even if it is a cool day outside, a vehicle may still pose a threat to a child. A child’s body temperature increases three to five times faster than an adult’s.

Parents and caregivers should form a habit of looking in the back seat every time they get out of a car. They should never leave a child in a vehicle unattended, even for a minute, and they should always lock the car and put the keys out of reach of children.

Warning signs of heatstroke include red, hot, and moist or dry skin; no sweating; a strong, rapid pulse or a slow, weak pulse; nausea; confusion; or strange behavior. If a child exhibits any of these signs

after being in a hot vehicle, the caregiver should call 911 or a local emergency number immediately. They should also quickly spray the child with cool water or with a garden hose. They should never put a child in an ice bath. MESA provides 911 emergency medical services previously provided by Northwest EMS to member municipalities in northwest Lancaster County. purchases may be made at Zum Anker Alley Shoppes and at www .lititzchocolatewalk.com.

New this year, some of the merchants and sponsors will offer coupons. These coupons will be emailed to online purchasers of the tickets prior to the event. People who purchase their tickets in person should provide their email address so they receive the coupons. To redeem the coupons, a person must show his or her Chocolate Walk button.

This fundraising event is held each year by the Kiwanis Club of Lititz Area to raise funds for the children’s charities it supports, including the Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic, Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, the Manheim Township and Lititz libraries, and Power Packs. Last year, the club - which has fewer than 30 members - was able to provide more than $100,000 to these organizations, and in the 30 years the club has been in existence, more than $1.1 million has been donated. Chocolate Walk is made possible by sponsors like Wilbur Chocolate, the retail locations and restaurants that open their doors for the event, the town of Lititz, the more than 150 volunteers, the people who buy tickets, and the chefs and chocolatiers who provide treats without compensation.

The Kiwanis Club of Lititz Area is part of Kiwanis International, a worldwide service organization that is devoted to serving the children of the world, one child and one community at a time. For more information about the Kiwanis Club or to volunteer at Chocolate Walk, contact Charlie Stickler at 717-560-2295 or visit www.lititzkiwanis.org.
