“When

We Climb Trees” explores allure of gaming and screentime

Catch the world premiere of a youth musical, “When We Climb Trees,” at the Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. The show will be performed at 2 and 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 20, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 21.

“When We Climb Trees” tells the story of a tight-knit group of friends who struggle with the conflict between sharing real-life adventures and succumbing to the draw of gaming devices and screentime.

“This show is really about finding balance between time to play, pretend, be a kid and be with friends with the ever-present allure of screentime and gaming,”

said Steven Courtney, who wrote the show. “I find it interesting to observe the youthful cast as they ‘pretend’ to bring this ‘play’ to life through their hard work yet willing spirits. Collectively, there are so many elements of teamwork, collaboration and planning to produce this playful, upbeat show with a rather serious undertone. More and more studies are showing the addictive power of devices.”

Courtney, who is the producer, songwriter and playwright of the show through Sun Hill Productions, worked in partnership with Kami Deppen of Big Dream Players, who is directing the show and served as costumer and set designer. The pair held auditions earlier this year for local youths to

record the musical’s soundtrack.

“The recording of the soundtrack demo was super fun, and it went as good as we could have hoped,” Courtney recalled. “We used the demo versions of the songs to share with the cast. After the cast selection process, we provided the soundtrack for actors to rehearse with prior to our official rehearsals. The instrumental parts of the soundtrack will be used in the live show, and the cast will sing live vocals for the performance.”

The cast of “When We Climb Trees” is primarily youths ages 10 to 16 from Lancaster and York counties.

This is the first youth musical Courtney, a singer-songwriter, has written, but he knows it

Lancaster Toys for Tots continues to do amazing things in our community. But it’s work that can’t be done alone, or without the support of many generous donors.

Lancaster Toys for Tots’ latest venture, Touch-A-Truck Family Day, looks to build off that altruistic spirit and take the organization’s work to a whole different level.

“We’re helping kids in Lancaster County, and there’s a big need in Lancaster County,” said Gil Bixler, Lancaster Toys for Tots’ coordinator for the last 37 years. “I’ve got a fantastic team of volunteers who just enjoy doing it. That’s what it takes to make it all happen. They work harder than I do.”

Rissers Mennonite Church will host community picnic

Fun, fellowship and food will be the focus of the annual community picnic hosted by Rissers Mennonite Church, 8360 Elizabethtown Road, Elizabethtown. The picnic will be held on Saturday, July 27, beginning at 4:30 p.m.

The event will start with a meal featuring chicken from Peters’ BBQ, said Arlene Heistand, connections/ outreach committee chairperson.

The theme of the picnic is “Community Helpers,” and picnic activities will reflect that topic. At 6 p.m., first responders will be on-site to greet guests. “There will be various emergency and other vehicles on display to view and for an opportunity to learn more about these helpers,” Heistand commented.

The picnic will include additional activities for people of all ages. A bounce house will be set up, along with face painting and yard games. Both children and adults are invited to participate in bingo games as well.

won’t be his last.

“I am presently developing a new musical themed around my song ‘Steven the Pirate,’” he shared. “I’m having a blast exploring the options for the storyline. There are a few other ideas in the vault as well. I do think I’ll stay in the ‘youth musical’ lane for moving forward.”

He hopes audiences will enjoy “When We Climb Trees,” noting that it will be performed in Landis Hall, a state-of-the-art production theater at the Junction Center.

“This show is all-ages friendly and will run around 65 minutes,” he said. “Bring the whole family.” Tickets will be available at the door or may be purchased in advance at www .thejunctioncenter.com/ when-we-climb-trees.

kid-friendly event. It will be held outdoors at Park City Center, 142 Park City Center, Lancaster, near Tires Plus, on Saturday, July 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event is free to attend, but families are encouraged to donate a new, unwrapped toy. It is also being used as a way to draw attention to autism.

“Park City came to us and said, ‘What do you think of this idea?’” said Bixler. “We thought it was great. The goal is to create awareness and supply toys for autism groups. Autism is more prevalent than you and I know. We want to get the public more aware of the needs of these children.”

On hand that day will be nearly 100 vehicles - cop cars, fire trucks, emergency medical services vehicles and tow trucks - as well as a LifeLion helicopter and a state police helicopter. Many members and representatives of police departments from Lancaster County townships and Lancaster County’s first responders will be

present.

“It’s helping us and it’s great (public relations) for them,” said Bixler of the public servants.

Up to 500 people are expected to attend.

Lancaster Toys for Tots’ Touch-ATruck Family Day will also include food trucks.

“I perceive it being a growing event every year,” said Bixler, himself a retired Marine. “It’ll be a lot of families, a lot of kids, a lot of fun. The state police will show the kids their helicopter. They can climb all over the fire trucks. And they can get in the cop cars and the officers will explain what they do.”

Lancaster Toys for Tots also raises funds for its annual Christmas toy drive for local underprivileged children by conducting a golf outing at Overlook Golf Course in May, by hosting car shows in the spring and fall and through a motorcycle ride in October.

In 2023, Lancaster Toys for Tots distributed 63,523 toys and supported 15,138 children, mostly
