When an organization collects 40,000 books for a sale and endeavors to sell all those books in four days, drastic sales measures may be employed. The Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society (LMHS) takes on such a challenge with by-the-box discounts beginning on the third day of its annual Bookworm Frolic. On the final day, the box price will be even lower. Although LMHS provides boxes, bookworms may bring their own. “The rule is for it to count, you have to be able to lift (the box of books) yourself,” explained Joel Nofziger, LMHS director of communications, who added jokingly, “Don’t bring a refrigerator box.” This year’s LMHS Bookworm Frolic will take place at LMHS,

Weaver-Kreider listed cookbooks, fiction, novels, and Christian fiction among the other categories that will be well represented at the sale. books available for purchase will be set up outside the LMHS building under a tent, the music section and new books, which will be sold at special discount prices during the sale, will be located inside. Weaver-Kreider noted that food at this year’s sale will be provided by food trucks. “On Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, we will have Italian sandwiches, breakfast sandwiches, and hot dogs, and on Saturday, we will have breakfast burritos, burgers, sandwiches, saffron and jasmine rice, kabobs, and Costa Rican chicken sandwiches,” said Weaver-Kreider, who added that the food trucks were selected for the diverse menus they offer. According to Nofziger, nothing donated for the sale will end up in the trash. “At the very end of the sale, we allow organizations to bid by category,” Nofziger explained. “On Saturday, if there’s a category an organization is interested in, they can make a bid to buy all the books in that category that do not sell, and they just have to come and collect them.” Organizations that have an interest in buying a lot of books may contact WeaverKreider at 717-393-9745. Items that are not purchased are recycled to raise funds for Mennonite Central Committee Relief and Development projects. A number of volunteers help make the Bookworm Frolic a success. Weaver-Kreider calculated that 20 volunteers are needed daily to help during the sale, and that about 100 volunteers are involved in the overall event. During the year, up to 30 volunteers help sort incoming book donations. The sale attracts about 4,000 visitors annually, raising up to $40,000 for the organization. All funds raised by the event become part of the general operating budget of the historical society. Readers who would like to learn more about the historical society may visit www.lmhs.org. Duck hunting boats dating back to the 1940s will be on display on shore for attendees to see, and owners will share about the history the boats played in hunting the Susquehanna River. Rollover boats and bushwhack or sculling rigs will be among those on display. According to Kneisley, decoys have played a large role in the history of Lancaster and York counties as far as how the area was hunted. “Columbia has been well-versed in duck hunting for years,” added Kneisley. Registration for the duck decoy contest will open at 10 a.m., and judging will begin at 11 a.m. Decoys will float in the Susquehanna River approximately 20 feet from the shoreline, where judging will be conducted. “This is a different style competition, because the birds are out into the water,” explained Kneisley. “They have to judge the birds in a live situation.” Carvers from Pennsylvania and several surrounding states will participate. Entries must be original handmade waterfowl-related decoys made of wood, cork, or foam. Each decoy must float upright and have a 12-foot string and a weight attached. There is a set fee to enter one decoy, and the fee will be lower for each entry thereafter. Individuals may enter as many decoys as they wish.

Susquehanna Heritage and the Lancaster County Chapter of Delta Waterfowl will present the third annual Conejohela Flats Duck Decoy Contest from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4, at the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia. The event is free and open to the public. Matt Kneisley, who serves as the Northeast Atlantic regional director for Delta Waterfowl, noted that the event is not just fun for waterfowlers, outdoors enthusiasts, and craftsmen, but also for families and individuals of all ages and interests. This year’s event has expanded to include a dog demonstration and boat show. Dog demonstrations will begin at 9 a.m. and continue throughout the day. A professional trainer from the Wilkes-Barre area will present demonstrations with American water spaniels, Labrador retrievers, and other species trained to hunt in the water and in fields. “We’ll be running them on ground and in the water. The nice part is that we’ll have so many dogs that we can rotate them so the dogs won’t get tired,” said Kneisley, noting that people may be surprised to learn about the many things a hunting dog can be trained to do and the time that can take.

Each workout ends with a Circle of Trust. “This is the time where PAX share what’s going on in their lives - the good, the bad, and the ugly, Fyke said. “What we are going through, more than likely somebody else has gone through and (that) provides an opportunity for additional support. We lift these up in prayer. If you aren’t a believer, that’s OK; you can still be there to support your fellow man. Another aspect of F3 that Fyke enjoys is choosing

If you just want the free workout, that’s OK; however, once you (show up) for a workout, you will see we are more than a workout group, remarked Fyke. Giving a Frozen Shoulder the Thaw with Painless MLS Laser Therapy
August 1 - 7
Plus Easing the Discomfort of Plantar Fasciitis Ten years ago, stabbing plantar fasciitis pain began in Brenda’s foot. She had physical therapy which helped a little, but the pain persisted. “I was limited on type of shoes I could wear,â€? she recalled, “and I couldn’t walk too long while out shopping.â€? To make matters worse, she developed a frozen shoulder. “It felt just like somebody punched me in the shoulder,â€? Brenda reported. She couldn’t use her shoulder without aggravating it, which meant no cooking and no lifting. “I needed to take over-the-counter pain relievers just to sleep,â€? she said. Brenda saw an ad in the Merchandiser for MLS Laser Therapy at Brennan Chiropractic and thought to herself, “That could work for me!â€? She attended Dr. Brennan’s free class. “MLS Laser Therapy is unique because it treats both pain and inammation simultaneously,â€? explained Dr. Brennan. “The MLS Laser works by sending photons of light deep into damaged tissue, which recharge and stimulate the cells. The cells of tendons, ligaments and muscles repair themselves faster, and ‘kickstart’ the healing process.â€? Brenda remarked, “That’s when I decided that I was getting this done.â€? Though lasers have been in use for over 35 years, MLS Laser Therapy is a noninvasive, drug-free, state-of-the-art breakthrough in restoring patient mobility, with no known side effects. In just one 15 minute comfortable treatment, patients suffering from a variety of musculoskeletal disorders, including degenerative joint conditions and sports injuries, are on their way to relief. “Dr. Brennan and his staff are wonderful and accommodating. We treated my shoulder ďŹ rst, and I purposely took no pain medication. After the ďŹ rst MLS Laser treatment, I thought it might be my imagination, but my shoulder felt pretty darn good. Each time I had a laser treatment I felt better and better. I no longer take over-the-counter pain medication!â€? Brenda exclaimed. “Now I don’t even think about my shoulder. For the ďŹ rst time in 10 years, I’m wearing sandals and I can even walk barefoot. It’s amazing!â€?

F3 stands for Fitness, Fellowship, and Faith. Although the organization is not specifically affiliated with a church, Fyke said many of those who attend the workouts are involved in a church of their own. “Our mission is to plant, grow, and serve small workout groups for men for the invigoration of male community leadership, stated Fyke. According to Fyke, the F3 founders came up with the idea when they noticed a strong lack of male community. “This provides an opportunity to get together with like-minded guys

to the very first F3 Lanco workout on Oct. 21, 2017, and since then the gathering has grown to approximately 14 regular attendees. Men of all ages are invited to participate in F3 Lanco, which meets from 7 to 8 a.m. every Saturday at Rapho Township Community Park, 960 Strickler Road, Mount Joy. The free workouts are held outdoors, rain or shine. Participants should dress for the weather and bring water and work gloves. “The workouts are all peer-led, meaning the guys take turns each week on leading the group, explained Fyke. “When you first start, you won’t lead for a while until you are comfortable and ready to do so. We will work with every guy to ensure they are ready. Fyke said the workouts are considered boot camp style, mainly because the group counts in cadence to each of the sessions. Body weight exercises make up a bulk of the time, including jumping jacks, mountain climbers, squats, burpees, push-ups, lunges, bear crawls, planks, and more. “It’s different every week because a different PAX (person in attendance) leads, and each person brings their own flavor to it, said Fyke. “We do have bricks and cinder blocks for weights that we will use as well to help increase the intensity. “We have guys of all abilities there. There is no physical fitness requirement for F3, added Fyke. “We leave no man behind and will always encourage you to become a better version of yourself. Part of F3 is that we work together because you are only as strong as your weakest link. So we want to make sure every link is as strong as possible so they are better for their family, the community, and themselves.

Uncountable postcards will be displayed and available for purchase at the 26th annual Postcard Exposition that the Lancaster County Postcard Club will host on Saturday, Aug. 18, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. A total of 25 dealers from five states are slated to offer postcards with the themes of advertising, holidays, real photos, town views, and more. Prices typically range from a quarter to hundreds of dollars. Additionally, club members will exhibit boards displaying groups of cards in the subjects of Pennsylvania views, transportation, advertising, and real photos pre-1950. “You can look at the boards and get an idea of what (the subject) is all about,” Greider remarked. The expo is popular among postcard collectors, and a line usually forms at the door before the venue opens. The club also welcomes individuals who are new to the hobby. “People come in who’ve inherited cards and don’t know what to do with them,” Schaeffer related. Postcards were a form of communication heavily used before telephones became standard in homes. Recipients tended to collect the missives in albums. “(Households) had their family Bible, a photo album, and a postcard album,” Schaeffer said. “They’d sit down and look through the albums on Saturday nights.” Both the images on the front and the text on the reverse of postcards tell stories. Schaeffer noted that club members have

Austin Hart of Manheim is living, studying, and working in Washington, D.C., this summer at the Washington Community Scholar’s Center (WCSC). Hart, a business administration major at Eastern Mennonite University (EMU), is working at Washington Area Community Investment Fund (WACIF), a community investment fund. With a specific interest in marketing, he is working with the communications and marketing director. A semester at WCSC brings students into the life of the nation’s Capital. Thirteen WCSC students recently took an excursion with professor Ryan Good to explore housing and employment as part of their interdisciplinary seminar on urban studies. The group visited the Building Museum to learn from an exhibit on eviction and
American labor history. At the heart of the WCSC program are professional internships in a variety of settings where students make positive contributions to the community and gain vocational direction. Students also get to experience city life, explore Washington’s cultural and historic attractions, learn about urban issues such as gentrification, and manage a house budget and relationships in the communal living environment of the Nelson Good House. The program has been in Washington, D.C., since 1976. Some internship sites have partnered with EMU since that time. Many WCSC participants have been asked to return after their internships for part-time or full-time work. The summer term will end on Friday, Aug. 3.

Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon and York counties received exclusive health education resources from physicians and health experts at Penn State Children’s Hospital. Students at participating schools also had an opportunity to participate in an essay and art contest, learn hands-only CPR thanks to the donation of the American Heart Association’s CPR Anytime kits, and receive fun booklets and activities to encourage healthful eating.
