IU13 Announces STEM Educators Of The Year When the Lancaster-Lebanon IU13 announced the winners of this year’s STEM Educators of the Year award in early June, Manheim Central and ELANCO school district teachers were honored for their work implementing STEM curricula that is innovative and inquirybased, integrates real-world applications, and utilizes assignments that include students from a variety of backgrounds and at different levels. Amy Carter, elementary STEM coach at Doe Run Elementary School in the Manheim Central School District (MCSD), was named elementary STEM Teacher of the Year, and Joseph Steinmacher, who teaches at Garden Spot High School in the ELANCO School District, was named secondary STEM Teacher of the Year. The STEM School of the Year was the Elementary
Division of the Palmyra Area School District. Carter said she was honored and humbled to have been chosen. “I have been so inspired by other STEM professionals in Lancaster County and around the nation,” she said, noting that in the past year, a new STEM curriculum was created for all kindergarten through fourth-grade learners in MCSD. “We grew our program to not only include integrating STEM in the classroom, but also added STEM as a dedicated part of our cycle day rotations for all grades,” explained Carter, who said that she is proud to be a small part of our larger STEM ecosystem looking to inspire the next generation to be the creators and innovators of their world. Carter was asked to apply for the award by her MCSD colleagues and other STEM professionals. She submitted an updated resume and completed See STEM Educators pg 4
Church To Offer Free Sweets Thirstdays
MC1
Ready to greet drivers who stop for coffee and snacks at Speedwell Heights Brethren in Christ Church, Lititz, on Free Sweets Thirstdays are (from left) pastors John Courchesne, Bonner Davis, and Brian Willison. The events will happen two Thursdays a month through November. By Ann Mead Ash
Brian Willison, lead pastor of Speedwell Heights Brethren in Christ Church, 413 W. Brubaker Valley Road, Lititz, is very specific about the reasons behind the church’s new ministry called Free Sweets Thirstdays. “ We want (those who travel Brubaker Valley
Road) to know if they need help - physical, emotional, spiritual - (that) we’re here for them,” said Willison. “That’s what we want to communicate.” To reach into the community, Willison, along with community impact pastor Bonner Davis and Willison’s growth group, have planned Free Sweet Thirstdays for the two Thursdays each month See Free Sweets Thirstdays pg 4
Amy Carter, who was named elementary STEM Teacher of the Year by the Lancaster-Lebanon IU13, stands outside her classroom at Doe Run Elementary School. Carter was encouraged to apply by her fellow Manheim Central School District educators.
Schreiber Rubber Duckie Race Moves Online Center Receives Matching Grant According to Dan Fink, director of marketing and public relations for the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, 625 Community Way, Lancaster, this is just the second time that Schreiber has received a $250,000 matching grant in its 84-year history, and both times it has come from the Donald B. and Dorothy L. Stabler Foundation. “This one comes at a critical moment for us as we work to navigate a COVID-19 world,” Fink remarked. “Like many nonprofits, we’re facing a challenging period in the next 12 months.” The grant will provide a dollar-for-dollar match for all the money raised by
Schreiber starting June 11, when the Stabler Foundation forwarded its approval. Stabler has committed up to $250,000, and Schreiber has one year to raise the matching funds. The initial $250,000 See Schreiber pg 5
Schreiber’s 32nd annual Rubber Duckie Race will be virtual for the first time in its history. Souvenir duckies with a “Choose Your Own Adventure” theme will accompany ticket sales, which will end on Sept. 12. Ticket proceeds will be matched by a grant from the Stabler Foundation.

The per-meal cost is $12. Preorders will be taken, and meals will be saved under the name provided when ordered. All payments are to be made when picking up the meals. Community Service Project To Benefit Widow, Adoptive Family By Francine Fulton
Thanks to Both Hands, a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving orphans, widows and Christian adoptive families, Tim and Tiffany Miller of Mount Joy will receive financial aid for their
upcoming adoption and a local widow will be given assistance with maintenance projects around her home. As part of the Both Hands program, adoptive families are asked to coordinate a service project at a widow’s home. In turn, the family receives sponsorships that are used to finance the cost of the adoption. The Both Hands name symbolizes one hand for the widow and the other hand for the orphans. On Saturday, Aug. 8, the Miller family and a team of volunteers will work at the home of a widow who
resides in Ephrata. Her husband died unexpectedly this spring after being in a car accident and then contracting the COVID-19 infection. Her home is in need of some repairs, including landscaping, painting, minor electrical work and general tasks that are difficult for her to complete.

After their application was approved by Both Hands, the Millers were asked to find a local widow in need. “We connected with (the widow in Ephrata) through a friend of a friend,” Tiffany noted. “Thankfully, she was the first widow we met and it all worked out. She is so grateful.”

Free Sweets Thirstdays from pg 1 from 7 to 9 a.m. from August through November. Free Sweets Thirstdays will be held on Aug. 13 and 27, Sept. 10 and 24, Oct. 8 and 22, and Nov. 5 and 19. Prepackaged treats such as granola bars and pastries will be available at the church during those times along with coffee, apple juice, and orange juice. The church has two entrances and a portico that will make it easy for visitors to drive through and for volunteers to distribute the food items. Signage along the road will alert drivers to stop in for a treat if they so desire. Speedwell Church draws members from Lebanon, Lititz, Ephrata, Manheim, Stevens, Denver, and beyond. “(Our membership) is pretty far reaching,” said Willison, noting that Brubaker Valley Road is heavily traveled on weekdays. “In the morning, this road has constant traffic,” he added, explaining that those traveling between areas west of Lancaster and the greater Ephrata area use the road to avoid the busier highways. “There are work trucks, tractor-trailers … there is all this traffic, and we think that’s a great opportunity to meet people.” The effort has roots in a similar program Willison was involved in when he
served as executive pastor of Hempfield Brethren in Christ on Marietta Avenue, where the congregation gave away coffee and doughnuts on the first Friday of each month. “What happened was that we started building relationships with people,” said Willison, who spoke of a couple that stopped often. “She was taking him for cancer treatments, and they would come in ... and ask us to pray for them,” he said, adding that one man who stopped was new to the area and came inside for prayer. “(Those who stopped) asked, ‘Are you trying to get members?’ and we said, ‘No, we just wanted to meet you,’” recalled Willison. “It became a ministry of meeting people at their places of need and being able to talk and share with them. It (was) not about getting members; it (was) about becoming friends.” Now Willison and members of Speedwell Church would like to offer the same to those who traverse the area on Thursday mornings. “(We hope to see) people who are heading to work and we will say, ‘Anything we could pray for (for you)?’” said Willison. “We aren’t going to say,
‘Come to our church’ or give them any materials,” he added. “We want them to feel comfortable knowing we are here for our community, especially with everything that’s going on now in our nation.” Willison shared that in the year he has been lead pastor at Speedwell, he has witnessed the kindheartedness of the congregation in giving to the Lititz Ministerium food drive and in projects involving making activity bags for children. “This church is a very giving church,” he said. “(Members and friends of the church are) very generous when it comes to helping.” Willison hopes that giving spirit is evident in Free Sweets Thirstdays. “It’s a place for people to come in and get something to start their day off and know that church cares,” he said. “If they’re having a hard time, we want to be available to them for whatever that looks like. If people are struggling with food (insecurity), we can offer them food. We want to reach into our community and say, ‘What are your needs and how can we help you?’” Readers who would like to know more about the church may visit www.speedwellchurch.org.

Steinmacher was completely surprised by the honor because he does not know who nominated him. He was asked by a member of the IU13 staff to apply. “Being nominated was quite a surprise, let alone winning,” he said, adding that he is honored to have received the award. “I do know that we have built a special program at Garden Spot High School (GSHS) over the past few years,” he shared, noting that he has been fortunate to work in the technology and engineering department alongside teachers Mark Kaufman, Mike Stitzer, and Cody Stoneback. “Together, we have created an impressive program that gives students unique STEM experiences,” he
Local couple Linda and Philip Malin has been photographing local furry and feathered family members for 30 years. However, the coronavirus pandemic challenged their business, which involved pet photography home visits and pet portrait events at local pet stores. They had to find a way to survive this crisis, so Linda came up with the idea to put pet photos on masks. Pet owners are invited to send the Malins an image by email or mail and then place an order for a Furry Face Mask at www.LindaAndPhilipMalin.com. Contact information for submitting photos is available on the aforementioned website. The Malins will tweak the photo, print it on a mask and mail it directly to the customer. See Masks pg 5
Steinmacher said that he sent several documents and pieces of information as part of the application process. “I wrote a few paragraphs outlining what our technology and engineering program looks like at GSHS and my philosophy on teaching,” he noted. He also sent an updated resume and five artifacts of student work, including CADD drawings and projects and website portfolios the students made. Also included in the packet was a video by GSHS assistant principal Steve Good, who spoke about Steinmacher’s work at the school. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the presentation of the STEM awards was done in a virtual format. The video honors each award winner and includes remarks from The Steinman Foundation, which sponsored the awards. The video may be viewed at www.iu13.org/STEMAwards.

Pet owners can have a photo of their bird, cat, dog or reptile heat-sealed and imprinted on a comfortable, two-ply, 100% polyester mask that can be washed and air dried. Individuals may also ask for a breed-specific pet from the Malins’ stock photography. While the Malins are used to working with pet expressions, the Furry Face Mask is not limited to pets. Some customers have designed their own artwork to put on their masks. For example, a gardener put her flowers on her mask, a groom put his new bride on his mask, a golfer put “hole-in-one and the date on his mask and a musician put his tuba on a mask. Artists of all ages have individualized a logo to wear while at work. Creative dragons and unicorns are a common image for children’s face masks. This year’s race would have been the 32nd event, but the tens of thousands of racing ducks will not take their trip down the Conestoga River at Lancaster County Central Park. Instead, a special online duckie event will be held on Sunday, Sept. 13, to determine prize winners. Tickets went on sale July 1 and will be available at www.schreiberpediatric.org/events/duckies or in person at Duckie Central, also known as Schreiber’s financial development office, 610 Community Way, Lancaster. Ticket sales will end on Saturday, Sept. 12. Proceeds from ticket sales will be matched by the Stabler grant. COVID-19 prompted the shift to a virtual duckie race, and there will be other ways this year’s event will look different. Schreiber supporters are encouraged to purchase tickets online to limit personal contact during duckie transactions. Fun,

Both Hands, a Tennesseebased charity, was founded by JT Olson, who was taking part in a golf fundraiser. He sent out letters asking for sponsorships. “A friend wrote back on the letter and said, ‘Maybe if you were working on a widow’s house, I would sponsor you, but you are just playing golf,’” Tiffany said. “He decided he had a big heart for adopting and he and his family adopted as well, and he (formed) this organization.” Tiffany and Tim currently have three sons - Cameron, 8; Lincoln, 6; and Theo, 3, who was adopted from South Korea in 2018. They are currently waiting to be matched with a boy or girl from South Korea. “We’re hoping we will get a match soon,” said TIffany. “Once we are matched it’s about a year until we (can) travel and bring the child home.” In preparation for the upcoming service project, the Millers recruited about 30 to 40 friends and family members to help out with the work. “Our church, Victory Church in Lancaster, is also involved, and people are bringing friends that are really handy to come help us out,” said Tiffany. “Local businesses donated all of the supplies that we are going to use.” Donating businesses include Home Depot in Lancast-

The Junkluggers Opens For Business
R061738
The Junkluggers of Berks, Chester and Lancaster is now available to serve residential customers and businesses in Berks, Chester and Lancaster counties. Services include junk removal, appliance removal and furniture removal, as well as attic, basement and garage cleanouts. Franchise owner Jakub Mochon has always been concerned about the environment and the community in this area of Pennsylvania, which he calls home. Mochon left his career of 20 years in the medical device industry and launched the Junkluggers of Berks, Chester and Lancaster. The eco-friendly junk removal company is on a mission to make Pennsylvania a little greener and eliminate 100% of reusable waste from landfills by the year 2025. The Junkluggers of Berks, Chester and Lancaster is the second franchise located in Pennsylvania. Mochon decided to bring the business to his local area, as he has been a resident of Chester and Berks counties for the past 18 years. He said he believes the Junkluggers will bring a positive impact to the area as he develops relationships with local non-forprofit organizations that can benefit from gently used items that need a second home. The Junkluggers offers donation receipts and launched the Remix Market, a sister company to some of the Junkluggers franchishes, as a way to keep items out of landfills. The Junkluggers focuses on green, community-oriented practices and striving to enhance lives, the community and the environment by donating, recycling, upcycling and supporting local charities. With the addition of Berks, Chester and Lancaster, the Junkluggers, founded in 2004, now has 30 locations open and operates across a total of 14 states, which are California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas and Virginia. For more information, readers may contact Mochon at jakub.mochon@junkluggers.com or visit www.junkluggers.com.
