God’s Clothing Closet is open for shopping

Back-to-schoolshopping can be expensive, but not at God’s Clothing Closet. The ministry of Ruhl’s Church invites you to pick up clothing, footwear and accessories for people of all ages at the annual giveaway.

The event will be held by appointment only on Friday, Aug. 25,from 3 to 7 p.m. It will also be held on Saturday, Aug. 26, from 8 to 11 a.m. No appointment is needed for Saturday. The church is located at 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim.

“It’s set up a like a department store,” said Kris Gray, one of the event organizers. She added that items are sorted into departments, such as ladies’, men’s and children’s,

on Monday, Aug. 21, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Manheim Farm Show complex, 402 E. Adele Ave.

The creek stomp will feature opportunities for hands-on exploration, said Jennifer Tulonen, Penn Township planner and CCWA secretary. “The

and are also organized by size. “It’s really like you’re shopping in a store, except everything is free,” she noted.

The church accepts donations year-round for the giveaway, and event organizer Barb Dunmire noted the selection is always extensive.

“It’s really like you’re shopping in a store, except everything is free.”

“It’s really better than shopping at a department store, because here you have so many choices and all seasons,” she said. “People really enjoy coming to this year after year. They look forward to it. You don’t have to be in need to come. Anyone

is welcome.”

Along with clothing, shoes and accessories, God’s Clothing Closet will offer a selection of devotional materials and Bibles. Child care will be available while parents shop, and free blood pressure checks will be offered on-site. Grab-and-go snacks will also be available at the exit.

Most items that are left over after the event are donated to Jubilee Ministries in Manheim, Gray said. “Nothing goes to waste,” she remarked.

This is the 23rd year for the giveaway, and last year’s event served more than 440 shoppers. That number represents an increase of almost 150 shoppers from the previous year, Gray said.

Ice cream social will benefit historical society

Head out to the Manheim Historical Society on Aug. 20, and you can enjoy a sweet treat while supporting the organization’s mission.

An ice cream social will be held at the Manheim Railroad Station, 210 S. Charlotte St., from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 20.

The admission charge entitles people to a bowl of ice cream and a variety of toppings, said Susan Williams, president of the historical society.

“We will have members of the

Manheim Central Barons football team as our ‘celebrity’ dippers,” she noted. “We’ll be offering vanilla, chocolate and black raspberry ice cream, and then we’ll have some football players manning the table with sauces and sprinkles.”

She is working with the Manheim Central High School band director to coordinate live music from an ensemble of students at the event as well.

“We’re excited to bring in the students from the football team and the band, because this is showing how young people can

Children experience more healthy and happy development when surrounded by caring family members and positive role models. Ready to help provide children with these supportive people is COBYS Family Services.

Headquartered at 1417 Oregon Road, Leola, COBYS provides a wide variety of support services for children in need in Lancaster County and surrounding counties. But what COBYS is really all about is giving all childeren a chance to grow into well-adjusted adults.

“We know that those support systems - families, biological or chosen - get you through life,” said Anne Stokes, the director of devel-

opment and communications for COBYS, “so you can have kids who can relate to others and forge lifelong relationships. It’s the key to a successful way. We don’t want to give up on them. Kids are now coming into care with layers and layers of trauma.”

With three locations in Lancaster and one in Lebanon County, COBYS approaches its mission through adoption, foster care, counseling and family life education programs. Motivated by faith, COBYS works closely and cooperates with state and local social agencies to provide the best possible outcome for each individual case.

“Any child may end up in foster care; it doesn’t really discriminate,” said Stokes. “They can come from any

place. Perhaps their family has been in poverty. Maybe their parents or grandparents have alcohol or other substance abuse issues. Sometimes kids are left to raise themselves. These kids may be in foster care for a few months until their moms and dads can take them back. The goal is to return children to their biological families, if possible.”

According to the 2022 State of Welfare report by the Pennsylvania Partnerships for Children, close to 500 children were in foster care in Lancaster County in 2021, and more than 20,000 kids in Pennsylvania received foster care during that same time frame.

“We receive a good portion of our funding from the state and county, but because of the high level of care that we provide, it doesn’t cover all the things we do,” said Stokes. “We empower adults and children to reach their full potential. When they come to us, they’re at a really tough spot in their lives. Our work is to make sure their lives are enriched as much as possible.

It’s a challenge that we continue to look to meet.”

COBYS is staffed by over 100 employees, about 10 of whom are licensed therapists.

“Foster parents are definitely our greatest need right now,” said Stokes. “We need people to say yes to taking an older child into their home. They have to be licensed to be foster parents, and we provide trauma-focused training. It’s not an easy thing to do, but it’s the future of a child. It’s a big challenge and a big reward.”

COBYS was founded in 1979 in association with the Atlantic Northeast District Church of the Brethren. It has been headquartered at its current location inside the Oregon Mill since 1989.

“COBYS just started out doing very basic foster care,” said Stokes. “Over the years, the need for services has grown, and our agency has grown to meet those needs. What we pride ourselves on most is how we deliver our care.”

For additional information on COBYS, go to www.cobys.org.

Governor Dick Environmental Center, 3283 Pinch Road, Mount Gretna, will offer two upcoming events. Activities are free and open to the public, but preregistration is required by contacting 717-964-3808 or governordick@hotmail.com and providing a name and phone number in case the program is canceled.

In celebration of National Honey Bee Day, Saturday, Aug. 19, the environmental center will host an event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Attendees may purchase wildflower seeds, engage in activities and

crafts, and receive information about pollinators. A long and fast-paced fitness hike will be offered on Sunday, Aug. 20, at 10 a.m. Attendees should bring water and proper footwear.

The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, will hold its Model Railroading Days event from Friday, Aug. 18, through Sunday, Aug. 20. Admission for the event will be included in the museum’s regular admission, and attendees will be able to explore a variety of displays from multiple model train organizations.

A Middle Division layout, which is based on the Pennsylvania Railroad in the Harrisburg area, will be set up in the second-floor gallery. The Pennsylvania Landscapes layout will be displayed in Stewart Junction. Both layouts have been crafted by the museum’s volunteers. On Saturday, Aug. 19, a tree-making demonstration for model train displays will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and it will be included in the museum’s standard admission cost.

On Sunday, Oct. 1, the Railroad Museum will hold its 16th annual Garden Railways Tour from 1 to 5 p.m. The self-guided tour will include five stops across Wrightsville, Lancaster, Lititz and Manheim, and each stop will feature a model train display that is incorporated into a yard or garden. After purchasing a ticket, participants will receive the list of stops on the route, and they may choose which locations to visit for their tour. Tickets may be purchased by visiting the

museum’s store during its regular hours or by visiting https://tinyurl.com/garden railwaystour. Children age 5 and under will be admitted at no cost.

The Railroad Museum first introduced the annual Garden Railways Tour after learning about the practice from museum volunteer John Bowman. Bowman is heavily involved in the garden railway community and continues to connect the museum with model train enthusiasts who have garden displays throughout York and

Lancaster counties.

“I think the appeal is the scale; garden railways are the largest model train displays,” said Elizabeth Myers, program coordinator at the Railroad Museum. “Many people associate model train displays with basements and small rooms, but this combines the hobby with nature and being outside.”

Not only are garden railways located outdoors, but they also often integrate a mix of elements that can be found in nature, such as

branches, flowers and stones. When setting up the displays, garden railway enthusiasts often place pieces made of plastic and metal alongside the natural elements to create a realistic model of real scenic train routes. The outdoor setting also allows the displays’ creators to utilize landscaping to customize their constructions. “It’s a really fun way to get outside in the early fall and enjoy a family-friendly activity,” Myers said. Bus trip to museum scheduled

The Maytown Historical Society will sponsor a bus trip to the Hagley Museum on Wednesday, Sept. 20. The Elite Coach bus will leave Fuhrman Park, 190 Rock Point Road, Marietta, at 8:30 a.m.

The first stop will be the Chester County History Museum. Next will be a three-course lunch at the 1817 Buckley Tavern in Centreville, Del.

Trip participants will then travel to the Hagley Museum, site of the Eleutherian Mills Residence, which was the first

Creek stomp

DuPont house. During a guided two-hour tour of the house and gardens, attendees will learn about the 150 years of family history represented by the residence. Also at the museum is a gunpowder factory that was once run by the DuPont family. The coach is scheduled to return to Fuhrman Park by 6 p.m.

The cost includes all admission fees, lunch, transportation by coach bus and tips. To make reservations by Thursday, Sept. 7, contact Janie Garber at 717-940-0037 or jgarber416@gmail.com.

Bus trip to offer singing opportunity

The Darla Bair Singers of Lancaster have again been invited to open for the Rockettes Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. A one-day bus trip will offer community members the opportunity to travel with the group to New York City on Saturday, Nov. 25. Singers attending the bus

trip will gather with the Darla Bair Singers on the Radio City stage that afternoon to perform before the 4 p.m. show.

For more information, community members may attend a meet-and-greet via Zoom on Wednesday, Aug. 16, at 7 p.m. For more details and the Zoom link, visit www.darlabair.com.

Church sets concert event

St. Paul Lutheran Church, Penryn, invites the community to attend “A Summer Eve With the Malta Band” on Saturday, Aug. 19. This event, to be held in the church picnic grove off North Penryn Road, is a variation on the church’s traditional community picnic, which has been held on the third Saturday in August for many years.

Unlike at past picnics, no food or chicken corn soup will be available. As in previous years, the event will feature a concert by the Malta Band of Lancaster from 6 to 8 p.m. Ice cream and drinks will be available for purchase, and there will be a cake walk. Attendees should bring blankets and lawn chairs.

Chiques Creek Watershed Alliance is fortunate to partner with the Lancaster County Conservation District (LCCD) to bring their watershed specialists who will be leading event attendees into the Chiques Creek to look for and collect macroinvertebrates in what we call ‘the creek stomp,’” she explained. Participants will search for and collect critters and bugs, learning about how macroinvertebrates impact and indicate stream health, she said. “For example, some species indicate good water quality while others are only found in areas of poor water quality,” she shared.

The creek stomp is familyfriendly and free to attend, and no registration is required, Tulonen noted. “It comes with a great opportunity to cool off from the summer heat at a great space near the newly planted Memorial Park in Manheim and learn about all the bugs and critters that are important to our ecosystem,” she said.

CCWA is a nonprofit, volunteer-run organization that focuses on events to promote good use of water resources and environmentally focused themes, she commented. “We hold the annual Chiques Creek Expo during Lancaster County Water Week and do tabling events with partner groups, like the Manheim Farm Show in October or the Native Plant and Wildlife Festival in springtime in Manheim Township,” Tulonen explained. “We hold monthly meetings at Penn Township Municipal Building at 6 p.m. on the first Wednesday of the month to discuss other projects, like stream cleanups or tree plantings.”

The creek stomp offers a way for CCWA to fulfill its mis-

sion of education while also providing family fun, she stated. “We hope that by having the event, community members are able to better engage with not just us as an organization, but the natural world around them and build on what we and our partners do at the creek stomp to be better stewards of our streams and waterways in Lancaster County,” she remarked. “Also, based on experiences at our past events, we know that just about everyone will have a lot of fun getting in the Chiques Creek in the middle of August.” Materials for the event, including nets and bug identification cards, will be provided. Participants should wear clothes and shoes that can get wet.

Covered Bridge Classic celebrates the joy of riding

The Lancaster Bicycle Club exists to promote the sport of bicycling, advocate for the safety of riders and provide members with cycling opportunities. Few events exemplify that mission better than the Covered Bridge Classic.

On Sunday, Aug. 20, the 400-member Lancaster Bicycle Club will stage the 44th edition of its annual Covered Bridge Classic at seven start/finish points across northern Lancaster County. Some 1,300 bicycling enthusiasts from points all along the East Coast will descend upon the county to celebrate the fellowship inspired by cycling.

The event is being presented as a ride, not a competition.

“The purpose is to draw in cyclists,” said Leslie Arnold, communications director for the Lancaster Bicycle Club. “It’s to offer a huge cycling event to the community. It’s an eclectic mix. Some are very serious cyclists. Some people do it because they are challenged by friends. Some make it part of their vacations. People want to see the covered bridges. That’s what draws people.”

From the seven start/finish points, participants are treated to rides of various length - 35, 50, 65 or 100 miles - through the Lancaster County countryside in the areas of Warwick Township, Ephrata, Manheim, Stevens and Hempfield. The 100mile trek incorporates 14 of Lancaster County’s covered bridges into its journey.

All of the routes include rest stops, some of which feature mechanical support, parking and refreshments.

“Lancaster is not flat,” said Arnold. “There aren’t steep, steep climbs, but we have climbs that are going to push you. The shortest course has the least amount of climbs, and the longest course has the most amount of climbs.”

The Covered Bridge Classic also serves as a fundraiser. From its participation, the Lancaster Bicycle Club is hoping to raise more than $10,000, some of which will be put back into the club, some of which will be funneled into community causes related to bicycling and some of which will go toward the maintenance of the covered bridges.

Since 1999, the Lancaster Bicycle Club has awarded $545,000 in grants mainly funded through the Covered Bridge Classic.

“It’s a huge way to give back to the community,” said Arnold. “The Lancaster Bike Club is all about advocating for cycling safety. We have social events through-

out the year. We have different things for everybody, different types of rides for all levels of riders. Throughout the year, there’s always an effort to schedule a ride every weekend.”

In addition to its relaxed rides, the Lancaster Bicycle Club also organizes two other more formal ridesthe Three Creek Century and the Chocolate Tour.

The Lancaster Bicycle Club was formed in 1973, and six years later it presented its inaugural Covered Bridge Classic.

“Over the years, we’ve evolved,” said Arnold. “More people came in, and we became bigger and more complex. At one point, we had 600 members. It’s a pastime you can do, and there’s also more serious riders. The club has evolved to reflect the needs of the membership.”

including classic songs such as “Get Happy,” “The Trolley Song” and “Over the Rainbow.” The performance features vocals along with storytelling. Ingersoll previously presented this show in an Emmy-nominated performance on PBS. Ingersoll also starred as Garland in “End of the Rainbow,” winning Chicago’s Jeff Award and LA Times Woman of the Year in Theatre.

Virtual workshop will teach tree pruning

Penn State Extension will offer a virtual workshop on how to correctly prune trees.

“Why We Should Be Making Small Pruning Cuts” will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 29, from noon to 1 p.m.

Branch failure can be caused by wind, ice, snow or a climber aloft. Such breakage can result in costly property damage, personal injury, power outages or blocked roads.

During the upcoming workshop, attendees will learn how tree branches deal with loading throughout the tree structure. There will also be a discussion on the biology around why small cuts are better than larger cuts and the impacts of decay on wound closure after pruning.

The program is designed to benefit municipal managers, foresters and arborists, as well

support the historical society,” she remarked.

Along with ice cream, the event will feature tours of the train station, including the Henry William Stiegel exhibit and model railroad display; trolley rides; and an opportunity to win a custom piece created by Stiegel Glassworks.

“We’ll be doing a giveaway of a Baron gnome made for us,” Williams said, noting that people can buy tickets for the giveaway at the event. “It’s made out of glass in the colors of maroon and gray.”

Tours of the historical society’s other properties, the 18th-century Fasig and Keath homes on East High Street, will also be offered during the

event.

The ice cream social is a fundraiser for the historical society, which provides programs and activities that promote the history of Manheim. The organization held its first ice cream social pre-pandemic, and Williams said organizers are looking forward to bringing the event back.

“We invite everybody to come out and enjoy some ice cream and see what we have to offer,” she said. “We really enjoy providing this program for people to come out and see our historical society.”

THISWEEK!

On Tuesday, Sept. 12, ASSETS will celebrate 30 years serving Lancaster with an event at Southern Market, 100 S. Queen St., Lancaster. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. Tickets, which are necessary to attend the event, called ASSETS at 30, may be purchased at https://assets-at30.eventbrite.com.

ASSETS was started by the Mennonite Economic Development Associates (MEDA) in an effort to create stateside opportunities for entrepreneurs. “We are a CDFI (community development financial institution),” said Nofziger,

who noted the organization plans to expand beyond Lancaster County. ASSETS can offer loans from $1,000 to $50,000. Three main lending products are available: a small business loan of up to $10,000; an impact loan of up to $30,000; and a special Reimagining Our Community loan of up to $10,000 for one year at 1%, accompanied by a 30% matching grant.

Loans are only the beginning of what ASSETS offers.

Entrepreneurial training programs and boot camps, which run from six to 10 weeks, include the Business Validator and Incubator classes, housed in the Women’s Business Center. ASSETS marketing coordinator Kirsten McWilliams said the Incubator offers entrepreneurs the opportunity to “fine tune strategies within their business and tell (their) story.”

giveaway every year, with people putting in more than 370 hours of work in the days leading up to the event. Volunteers pre-sort clothing throughout the year as well.

The church will accept donations for the giveaway beginning on Monday, Aug. 21. Donations may be left under the covered front porch at the church, and labeling the bag with the size and type of clothing is helpful, Gray said. “Something we’re typically low on is bigger boys’ clothing,” she remarked. “They tend to wear it out, so there’s always a need for that. Men’s clothing also goes really fast, so we always need men’s clothing.”

She invites everyone to come shopping at the event. “Come check it out and get some new-to-you clothes,” she said. “It’s a lot of fun.”

To schedule an appointment for Friday, text 717201-7566 or call that number and leave a message.
