Look Inside

Everything And The Kitchen Sink Manheim Resident Opens Her Own Business

Heather Landis was raised by a single mother. Money was tight, so Heather’s mother often served repetitive meals, including spaghetti and chicken potpie. When Heather was 10 and her mother was away, Heather went to the kitchen to play. She remembers making an absolute mess in the kitchen with her friends. “I learned very early on I cannot bake,” she said. “I tried and it was terrible!” After graduating from Manheim Central High School in 1997, Heather worked in many different restaurants as a bartender, a server, and a cook, as well as in other positions. As time went on, Heather decided to go to school for accounting and business management. With her associate degree, Heather worked at

evaeh Hartman may be only 8 years old, but she’s already an entrepreneur. Nevaeh and her mother, Shelby Hilt, operate Succulents by ShelNe, a business that provides potted plants to customers throughout Lancaster and York counties. “My mom has a green thumb,

N

and so do I,” Nevaeh said. The mother-daughter duo, who live in Mount Joy, launched Succulents by ShelNe in August of 2020. Shelby had been a special education teacher for 15 years when the pandemic brought everything to a halt. “I was an independent contractor, so I was going into people’s homes, and I couldn’t do that anymore,” she explained. With a

then-newborn son at home, along with a 6-year-old son and Nevaeh, Shelby re-evaluated what she wanted to do with her life. Inspiration struck just by looking around her home. “Every single window in my house had a plant in it,” she said, noting that she also enjoyed planting and landscaping outside her home. “It was like a jungle in here

at one point.” She met a woman who sold succulents and soon realized she could do the same. “We focus on succulents, but in arrangements,” she stated, adding that Nevaeh picks out the pots for the plants. Shelby’s fiancé, Andy, built an indoor greenhouse for the plants, and Shelby launched a Facebook group in November of 2020 to showcase her inventory.

On the wall of Donegal Presbyterian Church, a sign bears a Celtic saying. It translates to “one hundred thousand welcomes,” and it perfectly sums up the church’s philosophy, said Portia Brian, who volunteers as the church’s historian. “We believe in connecting people through faith,” she said. “Churches come and go, but this one has withstood the test of time.” She’s not kidding. Donegal Presbyterian Church, 1891 Donegal Springs Road, Mount Joy, will mark its 300th anniversary on Sunday, Sept. 26, with a homecoming service beginning at 10 a.m. Bagpiper Gustav Person will lead a processional of church dignitaries, and the service will include recorded greetings from the Rev. Stephen Richmond of the Rathneeny, Ireland, church with whom Donegal shares an ancestral heritage. Representatives from the synod and presbytery will participate in the service, and the Rev. Matthew D. Randolph will deliver the sermon. The Rev. Larry Chottiner has written a hymn especially for the 300-year celebration. The Donegal Church choir will provide special music. Communion will be celebrated at the church’s early 18th-century Communion table, and the elements will be served from the church’s antique pewter Communion set. Tea and scones will be served in the fellowship hall immediately following the service. A luncheon will be

held at Cameron Estate Inn beginning at 1 p.m. Brian said the congregation uses 1721 as the date of the church’s formation, because there is documented proof of that date. “We use that date, but we know that there were people worshipping here before that time,” she noted. The church grounds were once home to a “witness tree,” where church members met in 1777, when George Washington sent a message asking for men to muster and travel to Philadelphia for the Revolutionary War effort. In 1991, the tree had to be cut down due to disease, but the congregation used its wood to make offering plates, bowls, bells and more. Acorns from the original tree were also saved to plant a new tree. Brian said the 300th anniversary celebration offers a time for the See Donegal Presbyterian pg 5

flooring company for about seven years, but was eventually laid off. A couple months later, she was hired as an accountant. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, she was furloughed in March 2020. It was during her furlough that her husband, Steve Landis, encouraged her to take a chance and start her own made-to-order food business. “He said, ‘How many times do we have to tell you to do this? If it doesn’t work out, it doesn’t work out. Just try it,’” Heather recalled. So she did it. In the beginning, Heather worked out of her home. Within two weeks, someone reported it. “It was fine, though, because it just pushed me to go bigger,” she said. After going through the legal process and filling out the necessary paperwork, Heather found a commercial kitchen in East Petersburg in May 2020. She has been there ever since. When Heather and Steve were brainstorming ideas of what to name the business, Steve told her she had to find her niche. “The problem is that I don’t have a niche!” stated Heather. “I like to cook everything from many different cultures. I traveled to India, Mexico, and Jamaica, and I asked the locals where they ate.” From being in the kitchen at a young age to traveling, learning, and watching other people, Heather has gained a considerable amount of knowledge and experience. This has served her business, The Sink, very well. “Everyone says it’s everything but the kitchen sink,” explained Heather. “Well, I want it to be everything and the kitchen sink. People need to not be afraid to try new things because you can be amazed by what you think you wouldn’t like.” For those who have been considering starting their own business, Heather offered some advice. “It’s

“When this happened to Linda, it really hit home … being parents and realizing the danger our teenagers are in,” said Jennifer King. She and her husband, Wayne, both members of the Pennsylvania Riding Club, are working with American Bikers on a Mission to organize the Linda Stoltzfoos Commemorative and Abduction Awareness Ride. Stoltzfoos was kidnapped and murdered in 2020. Wayne, who was born into the Plain community, is friends with Sam Blank, a spokesman for the Stoltzfoos family. “I wanted to make sure this was done right,” said Wayne. “A focus of our club is bridging the gap between the biker community and the (Plain) community.” With that goal in mind, Wayne and other members of the club plan to hold the ride on Saturday, Sept. 11. Riders will meet at Ephrata Community Church (ECC), 70 Clay School Road, Ephrata, from 10 to 11:45 a.m. for registration. The ride will leave at noon and follow a route that will take Route 322 east to Farmersville Road to Shirk Road to Route 23

through New Holland to Route 897. The ride will end at Weaverland Anabaptist Faith Community, 210 Weaverland Valley Road, East Earl. A short ceremony including the Pledge of Allegiance, a prayer, announcements, and a safety briefing will be held at ECC. At Weaverland, Andrea McHenry, a representative of FREE, a Berks County-based anti-human trafficking organization active in Reading, will speak briefly. McHenry said she plans to share statistics about human trafficking. “We do education on how to take action against human trafficking and how to identify and respond to victims,” explained McHenry. “We do prevention work with children in an effort to keep them safe.” FREE opened The Resting Place, a women’s dropin center meeting basic needs and providing safe housing for those who request it, in Reading in 2019. The organization is in the process of opening a refuge home in the Reading area. With the ride being held on the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Wayne noted that riders from Never Forget 9/11 will leave Manheim and join the ride when it leaves ECC. In addition, the Green Castle American Legion Riders Color Guard will be present. There is no charge to take part, but Jennifer requested that those who plan to participate search for “Linda Stoltzfoos Commemorative and Abduction Awareness Ride” on Facebook and indicate their intent to attend. A similar ride last year attracted more than 700 riders. “There were probably 3,000 people (gathered at ECC before we left),” noted Wayne. Organizers anticipate having coffee and possibly doughnuts at ECC prior to the ride. They are hoping to provide volunteer traffic control and to have members of the Bird-in-Hand Fire Company that organized early searches for Stoltzfoos present. Opportunities to donate to those organizations will be presented. Following the ride, chicken meals and ice cream will be available for purchase at Weaverland.

her mom, she’ll give you a direct answer: “Everything.” Nevaeh, who will be a third-grader at Doe Run Elementary this fall, said she loves going to greenhouses and picking out plants and pots, and she spends her free time watching YouTube videos about how to propagate the plants. Shelby and Nevaeh deliver plants to customers and are also exploring the idea of having a mobile bus or truck selling plants. Shelby credits the success of the business to the ease of growing succulents. “People who can’t grow plants can grow succulents,” she explained. “It’s made a lot of plant moms out of people who didn’t think they could be one.” While the business has provided Shelby with a new career, it has also allowed her to spend precious time with her daughter. “This business has shown me who she is as a person. She’s a giver,” Shelby said, noting that Nevaeh celebrated her birthday in early August by giving out free plants to neighbors. “She has a good spirit.” For more information, search for “Succulents by ShelNe” on Facebook.

It’s just one way the organization supports its mission of creating lasting change in the lives of orphaned and at-risk children. Brittany’s Hope was named for Brittany Ann O’Connell, who died in a car accident in 1999. Brittany was one of 12 adopted children and three biological children of the Abel family, who created the organization to

spotlight vulnerable children around the world. “My parents would travel to other countries and realized there are so many special needs children who are left behind in orphanages,” said Mai-Lynn Sahd, executive director of Brittany’s Hope. “They

were essentially being warehoused, with little caregiving.” Brittany’s Hope specializes in helping special needs children, which Sahd explained could include a child with physical or developmental delays as well as hard-to-place older children or

Brittany’s Hope from pg 7 pandemic and economic downturn, our mission is needed more than ever.” The heartbeat of Brittany’s Hope is its volunteers, Sahd remarked, including the people who cut and sell the dahlias, as well as volunteers who help the organization with other fundraising events such as its upcoming Brittany’s Ball on Saturday, Sept. 11. “This will be our second gala, and we’re very excited,” she said. “Last year’s gala was a lifeline of support for orphaned and at-risk children, and we hope to meet their needs once again this year.” Thanks to a corporate partner who covers overhead expenses for the nonprofit, 100% of donations directly benefit children, Sahd noted. “We’re supporting children who need it most,” she said. “Our work is always relevant, but this year in particular, with everything happening around the world, our work is critical.” For more information on Brittany’s Hope, visit www.brittanyshope.org.
