A year ago, Jenn Knepper, founder of the Gifts That Give Hope (GTGH) Lancaster Alternative Gift Fair, was looking forward to moving the fair from its location at the Farm and Home Center in Lancaster to The Junction Center in Manheim. This year, Knepper is talking about the online fair that the organization will hold on Saturday, Dec. 5, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. During that time period, those wishing to give an alternative gift may visit www.giftsthatgivehope.org and choose an organization to donate to. “You’re purchasing a gift for somebody, and we will send you a card with a description of the gift you purchased,” said Knepper, who added that the fair is the

It comes as no surprise that we continue to face many of the challenges we have experienced over the past six months. Who hasn’t used the word “uncertainty” more times than they can count? Despite this uncertainty, we have worked hard to keep our families and community safe while providing positive, creative ways to reinforce that we are in this together. We encourage you to continue sharing your stories and connecting with us on social media so we can go on spreading all the good we see in this world. At Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. FIA Invites Public To Get Creative Friends In Action International (FIA) is looking for individuals to transform a variety of supplies into items to be sold at a fundraiser event on Saturday, Oct. 3. The event was inspired by the HGTV show “Flea Market Flip.” A local nonprofit, FIA uses infrastructure projects in remote locations of the globe as a platform to share the Gospel with unreached indigenous people groups. Interested readers are invited to visit FIA’s Middletown headquarters, located at 3950 E. Harrisburg Pike, by appointment to select free supplies. They may browse items left over from construction projects as well as donated yard sale items. These supplies

include chairs, tables, bicycles, small furniture, books, mechanical items, and household items. With materials secured, participants can work at home using their eye for style and some elbow grease to turn these leftovers into something new. See FIA pg 4

Northwest Emergency Medical Services (NWEMS) recently presented Robert C. Stirling Educational Scholarships to two graduates of Manheim Central High School (MCHS). The 2020 scholarship winners were Joshua Varner of Lititz and Erin Hoffman of Manheim. Josh and Erin, who will both attend Lebanon Valley College, each received $1,000 toward their fall semester tuition. Josh will pursue a degree in physical therapy, while Erin will pursue a degree in speech-language pathology. In a typical year, the award is presented during an end-of-school-year ceremony, but because of the pandemic the event did not take place. “Manheim Central School District hold an awards ceremony for graduating seniors for the scholarships they earn and, normally, See Scholarships pg 5

Knepper suspects that recent occurrences may have changed perspectives on meaningful gifts. “I think through this (pandemic) people may have realized that stuff really isn’t important, other than basic necessities,” she said. “(Instead of) all the stuff we might have thought was necessary, we can refocus on what’s important.” COVID-19 and the resulting restrictions also encouraged the changes in how the fair will be held this year. “We decided to keep it virtual,” said Knepper, who added that the organization will be spotlighting 30 nonprofit organizations that have taken part in the fair previously. “The sponsors that would normally have been our supporters are going through a tough time, so we are trying to have minimal overhead costs,” she explained. She added that, as in the past, there will be variety in the organizations that are featured and that both local and global non-

profits will be included. Local organizations that will be featured in the 2020 GTGH are Milagro House, SWAN, Music for Everyone, Lancaster County Reach Out and Read Coalition, Lancaster Farm Sanctuary, The Common Wheel, and Power Packs Project. Other area nonprofits that will be highlighted are Lifecycles, The Edible Classroom, Mom’s House, Aarons Acres, Faith Friendship Community of Mountville, the Lancaster Junior League, Nurse Family Partnership, North Star Initiative, Clare House Lancaster, Church World Service Lancaster, and Advoz. Organizations with furtherreaching missions are Feed My Starving Children, World Bicycle Relief, Connection Ubuntu, Habitat for Humanity, Rafiki Africa Foundation, Brittany’s Hope, HOPE International, Heifer Project,Vickie’s Angel Foundation, Outreach Paraguay, Siloam Ethiopia, and Meals on Wheels.

Letter from pg 1 decisions that we’ve all had to make during this pandemic. With our highest priority being to maintain the best local news coverage, we have made some changes that you will begin to see starting this week. To that end, this community paper will be distributed to your household every two weeks, encompassing the entire coverage area. While you will not receive the printed edition each week, we invite you to visit us online at townlively.com/read and sign up for our weekly email newsletters for fresh content EVERY WEEK. This won’t be for long. We anticipate this as a temporary measure as we navigate the next few months. As we move forward, every effort will be made to continue to supply you with your community’s news and advertising messages. It is absolutely paramount that we support our local businesses by shopping locally, eating locally, and utilizing our local

Jocelyn Engle service industries. Additionally, our nonprofit organizations play a pivotal role in filling the needs within our communities. Let’s continue to live out what is at the heart of community - together, we can do great things! is an example of (how a scholarship winner) can be an adult going back to school as long as they are pursuing a degree in the medical field.” The Robert C. Stirling Educational Scholarship is named in memory of Bob Stirling. Stirling was a familiar face in the Manheim community, known for his enthusiasm for the town and the community where he lived and worked. Stirling owned an insurance business, was active in many community and civic activities and was a lifetime member of the Manheim Veterans Memorial Ambulance Association. Stirling’s interest in the ambulance service began when he assisted a volunteer ambulance crew at an accident that had occurred in front of his home on East High Street in Manheim many years ago. On the crew that day was Clarence “Mike” Graham, one of the ambulance’s founding members, who asked Stirling if he would like to ride along and assist with the transport of the patient. That invitation led to more than 30 years of

service for Stirling with the Manheim ambulance. After Stirling’s passing in 1994, his family and the Manheim Veterans Memorial Ambulance Association created an educational scholarship “for residents of the Manheim Central community who are pursuing a degree in the medical field.” Since merging with the Manheim ambulance association in 2013, Northwest has continued to offer the Robert C. Stirling Educational Scholarship in exactly the way the Stirling family and the Manheim ambulance association intended. The first Robert C. Stirling Scholarships were awarded in 1995, one year after Stirling’s passing in June of 1994. Successful applicants are chosen based upon the content of the applications, a written essay and a personal reference. The applicants are also judged based on their GPA and their involvement in volunteer or community service. For more information, readers may visit www.nwems86.org.

of Learning In Full-Time (LIFT) Jobs, a partnership between CAP and Ephrata-based Four Seasons Produce. LIFT Jobs is a yearlong pilot program for low-income single mothers. It combines onthe-job training at Four Seasons Produce with intentional life skills development. Stipends are available to the participants for transportation, child care, and housing, three of the biggest barriers to employment facing single mothers struggling with poverty. By eliminating barriers to employment and supporting employees with personal and professional development, CAP is working to help the program’s participants escape the cycle of intergenerational poverty.

That did not happen this year,” noted Lori Shenk, NWEMS community outreach manager. “We were not able to do a presentation, so we did one at the Manheim station (on Aug. 3).” To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must be residents of the Manheim Central School District who are entering, already accepted in or currently enrolled in an area of study in the medical field. This year the application period opened in January. “It was advertised in The Merchandiser and on our Facebook page,” Shenk explained. “Scholarship applications are provided to MCHS because the scholarship is specific to Manheim Central residents.” Shenk emphasized that scholarship winners do not have to be seniors, but they do have to reside within the school district’s boundaries. “Erin was a high school graduate this year, and Josh graduated in 2019 from Manheim,” Shenk noted. “(Josh)

In lieu of its annual Walk of Love Cross Country 5K, Brittany’s Hope, a nonprofit organization that helps orphaned children around the world, will instead hold the Brittany’s Hope Social Distance 5K on Saturday, Sept. 19, at The Barn at Stone Gables in Elizabethtown. The change, which was made due to the coronavirus pandemic, will adhere to all CDC social distancing and safety guidelines, while also raising money for the charity. The race will have a time trial type setup that will allow runners to start individually or in small groups of associated participants such as family members or people who live together. Designated start times will begin at 7:30 a.m. and run through 10:30 a.m. Participants will be able to run safely in a chip-timed, time-segmented race. “Basically, it will be a rolling start,” explained MaiLynn Sahd, executive director. “A runner will make a reservation online for a time to begin.” She noted that runners must stay in

their cars until 10 minutes before they race. Runners will be able to pick up their bibs containing the timing chip at the starting line not more than five minutes before their start time. The 5K course will be a crosscountry style that includes paved trails and trails through the woods. The course, which will be clearly marked, is a different course from past years. Additionally, runners will have on-course passing restrictions. Upon completing their run and crossing the finish line, participants must return to their vehicles. Sahd emphasized that the race will have a cap of 300 participants. “We are confident that we can do it in a safe manner,” she noted. Because of health and safety precautions, there will be no games, activities, lunch or fun walk this year. “On a typical year, we attracted close to 400 runners. It’s a big event,” said Sahd. “Close to 1,000 people came because in the past we had activities and games, a petting zoo and lunch and people picnicked there. It was an event that was highly anticipated by the community.” People can also participate in a virtual fun walk that weekend. “Whether walking 1 or 2 miles, we encourage families to get out and walk, run or bike together the weekend of Sept. 19,” Sahd said. People may complete the

Proceeds from race and virtual fun walk registration fees will directly benefit Brittany’s Hope, which was founded in 1999 as part of an effort to facilitate adoptions of special needs children from around the world by issuing adoption grants to assist families with the costs associated with international adoptions. In addition to issuing grants, the organization provides humanitarian relief efforts, including food and health care, to benefit the children who remain in orphanages worldwide. “This race is to raise money to fund the programs,” Sahd said. “It is also a day of coming together for adoptees and families who have adopted and to remember

those kids who are still in need of families. (We want) to celebrate them, uplift them and advocate for them.” The social distance 5K event will be held rain or shine. “The funds are important, but having people doing something they enjoy will be fun,” Sahd added. “With many things that have been canceled, at least we have one thing that is going on and we are excited.” The Barn at Stone Gables is located at 1 Hollinger Lane, Star Barn Way, Elizabethtown. Details and registration are available at www.brittanyshope.org /fundraisers or by searching for “Brittany’s Hope 5K Social Distance Race 2020” on Facebook. Lisa noted that she has always had a strong desire to get involved with MHALC in some capacity. “My life has been touched by (mental health issues) in multiple areas,” she shared. “I just feel like it’s an underrepresented cause.” Lisa sees the tournament as an opportunity to raise awareness. “I don’t think people realize all the resources they have for people with mental health issues,” she stated. A former educator, Lisa was also involved in an MHALC focus group that she hopes will be working with area schools. “(The group) had some great ideas about introducing curriculum and ways to reach students,” she said. Individuals and teams of two to four players may register by searching for “The Shack Restaurant & Mini Golf” on Facebook and purchasing tickets for the Benefit Mini Golf Tournament. Lisa Alcala is passionate about dispelling the stigma that is sometimes attached to mental health, especially among young people. “A thing I really feel is important is educating children in school that mental health is a medical issue,” said Lisa. “(Having a mental health issue) doesn’t mean you’re different. It just means you have something that needs to be treated.” Lisa, who owns The Shack Restaurant & Mini Golf, 662 S. Oak St., Manheim, with her husband, Ray, believes that treatment for a mental health issue should not be viewed any differently than needing vision correction. “If you have an eye problem, you go to the doctor to get glasses,” she said. “I think kids need to hear that (connection) a lot. It makes it real.” Back in February, Lisa contacted Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC) to see how she could help promote an enhanced understanding of mental health in children and teenagers. One result of that connection will be a Mini Golf Tournament held at The Shack on Saturday, Sept. 19. All funds raised by the tournament, which can accommodate a total of 76 players, will go to MHALC to help promote mental health through advocacy, education, and support. Golfers may check in for the tournament at 9:30 a.m. that day. The tournament will start at 10 a.m. A heavy rain date has been set for Saturday, Sept. 26. According to Lisa, the 19-hole course has been called “the most challenging course in Lancaster

County.” “The best score here has been a 58,” she said, noting that most people score in the 80s. The tournament will be in a scramble format with a shotgun start. “A shotgun start is when everybody is assigned a hole, and they all start at the same time,” said Lisa. “(Players) keep their ball and finish all the holes.” She also explained that in a scramble, all the players play from the best spot. “Everyone moves their ball to that spot (after the first shot),” she said. Prizes will include trophies and cash for the top three players and a closestto-the-hole prize. “We will pick a hole and someone will be out there to measure who is closest on the first shot,” Lisa said. There will also be door prizes and opportunities to purchase meal packages ahead of the tournament day. Some of the sponsors for the tournament include Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc.; Kegel’s Produce; Cain’s Lanes; Border Magic of Lancaster; Kinetics of Windstream; and Kreider Farms. In addition, Kreider Farms has donated mugs, shirts, and hats, and Cain’s Lanes has donated bowling games for door prizes. “If anyone from the community has door prizes to donate, they can reach out (to us),” said Lisa.

“Practice makes perfect, so the saying goes, and it is proving true in the fundraising meals hosted by Siloam Ethiopia in Landisville. Prior to the shutdown in March, the organization co-founded by nurse Wegayhu Ketema and her husband, Ethiopian Evangelical Church in Lancaster (EECL) pastor Demeke Getahun, held quarterly buffet dinners. When indoor dining was discouraged by state guidelines, the buffets became takeouts. “Takeout style is very good, Getahun commented after Siloam Ethiopia’s second fundraiser in the new format. He noted that one of the benefits is that customers can enjoy Ethiopian food for more than one meal. “It’s also easier for us, he added. “It saves our time: We don’t have to set up or clean up (a dining room). Getahun and Ketema have continued to perfect the process for the takeout meals. At the meal on Aug. 1, customers pulled up to EECL, 175 Church St., Landisville, and were handed preassembled bags of containers with doro wat, the signature chicken-and-hardboiledegg dish of Ethiopia; spicy lentils; split peas; atikilt wat, a mixture of onions, cabbage, and carrots; and injera, a sourdough-type flatbread. At the next meal, which will be held on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 1 to 5 p.m., customers will be able to choose which plant-based dish they would like to accompany their doro wat and injera. The change was made in response to customer feedback. Donations will be accepted for the meal, and proceeds will be

used to purchase a blood chemistry machine for use in the free medical clinic that Siloam Ethiopia established and operates in Ketema’s hometown of Harar, Ethiopia. Thanks to a previous fundraising meal, Siloam Ethiopia previously purchased a complete blood count machine. Having these two devices at the clinic will enable bloodwork to be performed on-site. “Because we don’t have it, our patients have to go to other places, but they don’t have money to do it, Getahun explained. The free clinic serves the poorest people in Harar, providing medical care for homeless and elderly populations, as well as individuals who live in the area. Based on the results of bloodwork, the medical staff will refer clients to the hospital or order medicine so they do not have to spend money they might not have on a trip into the city. Getahun noted that right now, due to COVID-19, the hospital is

accepting only the most serious of cases. The medical clinic is trying to pick up the slack. “Siloam Ethiopia is giving service more efficiently now, Getahun said. “The clinic is jammed. They help a lot of people. The clinic is also providing some food support for elderly clients. Ketema has picked up extra shifts at a Hershey rehab hospital in order to send money to the clinic to buy food. “(The elderly individuals) don’t have anything, Getahun said. “Expenses have doubled since before COVID. The medical staff members at the clinic have been providing COVID-19 awareness and safety training to clinic clients and community members. Ketema has been collecting personal protective equipment (PPE) to send to Harar for use at the clinic and in the community. She plans to soon send a shipment, which will include 10 donated wheelchairs. “People are sending us masks.

We are really blessed, Getahun commented, adding that hospitals in York and Baltimore have donated PPE upon Ketema’s request. Siloam Ethiopia had established satellite clinics in schools around Harar, but they closed when the school year ended. When students return to class, the clinics will resume operation. The organization also plans to dig a well at a school that has no access to running water. At a previous fundraising meal, a supporter dropped off a $5,000 check for the project. “I am amazed at how God is working. It’s just blowing my mind, Getahun remarked. For more information about Siloam Ethiopia, readers may visit www.siloamethio.org. Orders placed in advance for the Sept. 12 meal are appreciated but not required. Individuals may email siloamethio@gmail.com or call Getahun at 717-874-8510 to indicate their meal preferences.

It’s not just a golf outing - it’s a chance to help people like Marion! Siloam Ethiopia president and co-founder Demeke Getahun (left) and Ethiopian Evangelical Church in Lancaster elder Elias Adnew volunteered at a fundraising event on Aug. 1.
