Bible2School Prepares For New School Year By Chelsea Peifer
Bible2School offers free elective Bible classes to children in second, third, and fourth grades attending Doe Run and Baron elementary schools. Why those grade levels? “That’s really when the kids are starting to ask the hard questions - like ‘ Who am I?’ ‘Where do I come from?’ ‘What happens when I die?’ - and we love that we can come alongside of them and give them a biblical worldview,” said Stephanie Smith, director of operations at Bible2School. Students in the Manheim Central School District have the opportunity to participate in the hour-long classes offered on a weekly basis during lunch and recess. Bible2School is entirely free to schools and families, as it is funded
through donations and carried out by trained volunteers. The program formed in 1979 when a group of pastors from the Manheim area decided to utilize the then newly amended Section 1546 of the Pennsylvania School Code, which allows children to be released from public school for religious training of their choice. Each week, a Bible lesson is taught, sometimes incorporating music, a skit, or a science experiment, before the children split up into smaller groups, where a volunteer leads discussion, a craft or activity, and prayer. “We really aim to make it as fun as possible and age appropriate,” Smith said. “(Students) really look forward to it.” The small group leaders try to develop friendships with each student. Smith noted that some of the volunteers even request to move up in grade levels along See Bible2School pg 2
Volunteer Marie Good (center) interacts with students during Bible2School, a free weekly elective Bible class offered to second-, third-, and fourth-graders attending Doe Run and Baron elementary schools. Registration is now open for the 2019-20 school year. Volunteers are also needed.
Golf Tournament To Fund Not The Last Dance By Ann Mead Ash Hope Within’s New Dental Clinic By Chelsea Peifer
Hope Within Ministries, a free primary care medical clinic located at 4748 E. Harrisburg Pike, Elizabethtown, focuses on providing health care coverage for people who may otherwise fall between the cracks in the health care system. “A lot of people think that it’s the poorest of the poor that we see, but it’s not,” explained Anne Marie McAlester, Hope Within chief operating officer. “We serve those who are the ‘working poor,’ those who are working multiple part-time jobs to make ends meet but yet they make too much to qualify for medical assistance and not enough to afford health insurance.” Oftentimes, Hope Within patients See Hope Within pg 2

Doris Kreiter of Lititz is not happy that her husband, Dave, is retiring even though Dave is 83. “I hate to see him retire because we have a good time,” said Doris, referring to her husband giving up calling square dances, which he has been doing since the mid1970s. The pair founded the Swing Thru Square Dance Club in 1974. Doris is still looking forward to the last two fun nights of calling that Dave has on his schedule. Although Dave is retiring, the club he and Doris founded is still going strong, and members are excited to teach square dancing to the next generation. In fact, the club will offer two free introductory nights for those who are interested in learning a bit about this form of dance. The club invites singles, couples, groups, and families to Luther Acres Wellness Center, 600 E. Main St., Lititz, on Thursdays, Sept. 12 and 19, at 7 p.m. See Square Dance Club pg 6
Doris and Dave Kreiter were dressed to square dance in 2014. Dave is retiring from calling square dances and running the Swing Thru Square Dance Club the two founded in the 1970s. The club will continue to hold dances, and free lessons will be offered at Luther Acres Wellness Center in Lititz at 7 p.m. on Sept. 12 and 19.

are working multiple part-time jobs and trying to piece everything together, or they are even full-time employees struggling to make ends meet, said McAlester. “It’s a misconception that everybody has health insurance. A big piece of the population has gone uninsured.” Residents of Lancaster, Lebanon, and Dauphin counties who are medically uninsured and fall under 250% of the federal poverty level are eligible for treatment at Hope Within. According to McAlester, Hope Within has approximately 350 active patients and has seen 64 new patients so far in 2019. Eight medical providers volunteer their services at Hope Within, and McAlester added that more volunteers are always welcome. Hope Within also partners with the central Pennsylvania ministry “She’s Somebody’s Daughter” to treat individuals who have been ensnared in trafficking or by other brands of the sex trade. “These girls are fragile, and they are treated with respect and with dignity, quite possibly for the first time ever,” McAlester said. An approximately 1,900square-foot addition to Hope Within’s primary care center was completed this summer to house its new lost-cost counseling wing. Counseling services were previously offered out of only one room, but McAlester explained that the expansion includes three counseling rooms. Counseling services are available to anyone on an income-based

sliding scale fee. The room formerly used for counseling services will soon be converted into a dental suite, so that Hope Within can begin implementing a donationbased dental clinic in 2020. McAlester said that plans are also underway for a greater dental expansion later that year, with Hope Within aiming to begin providing dental services in space at Community Place on Washington, 61 E. Washington St., Elizabethtown, by the end of 2020. “That’s still a long way off for patients to wait. We’ve had lots of calls (requesting dental care) already, so we want to provide something in the interim,” McAlester remarked. Dentists who will volunteer their services are needed. Proceeds from the annual Golf for Hope tournament will go toward furnishing the new dental clinic. The community is invited to take part in the Golf for Hope tournament on Friday, Sept. 27, at Sunset Golf Course, 2601 Sunset Drive, Middletown. The tournament will feature a four-person scramble format. Registration will open at 11:30 a.m., and play will commence at 12:30 p.m. with a shotgun start. Participation is limited to the first 120 golfers. To register in advance as a single player or as a group of four, interested individuals may visit https://tinyurl.com/hwgolf2019. Prizes will be awarded to the first- and second-place teams, plus individual prizes will be given for hole-in-one, longest putt, longest drive for male and female, straightest drive, and closest to the pin. Players may also opt to purchase three mulligans for a nominal fee. A post-tournament catered meal and brief awards ceremony are set to begin at approximately 5:30 p.m. Individuals who would like to support Hope Within but forego the golf competition are welcome to sign up for the dinner only. Corporate sponsors are also needed. Interested businesses and individuals may call 717367-9797. The deadline to register as a golfer or sponsor is Monday, Sept. 16. with their students. “To know that they’ve got another adult who loves them and shares the message of Christ with them is huge,” said Smith. “This is a way to help (students) alleviate some stress and to let them know that God loves you, He cares for you, and He wants a relationship with you.” Classes will begin the last week of September, but open registration is available year-round, so students may join at any time. To enroll a child, parents must fill out a written registration form or a permission form at https:// manheimcentralpa.bible2school .com/student-registration/. The classes meet off-campus in local
churches and at other locations that partner with Bible2School. For students who already attend church, Smith said that Bible2School offers another perspective and affirms the faith they have already begun to develop. Conversely, the classes may also appeal to parents who are not involved in a church but would still like to introduce their children to biblical concepts. More volunteers are needed to expand the program and keep it running. Individuals who are interested in volunteering their time or donating financially may call 717-615-2944 or visit www.bible2school.com.

Finding just the right mix of plants to thrive in shaded conditions can prove difficult for some, but it was nothing that longtime gardeners Sherry and David Haneman couldn’t handle. Towering English and black walnut trees, along with evergreen and maple trees, anchor the property behind the Hanemans’ historic Queen Anne Victorian cottage, built in 1863. Visitors will be able to view the Hanemans’ handiwork on Sunday, Sept. 8, when their garden will be one of seven featured on the annual Marietta Garden Tour. The self-guided tour will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine, offering tourgoers inspiration for the end of summer and autumn season. Proceeds from the tour will benefit the ongoing restoration of the Marietta Community House, 264 W. Market St., Marietta.
It’s Time To Put Down
An original wrought-iron fence, a small pond, an outhouse-turned-garden-shed, hydrangeas, mountain laurel, wood poppies, and rhododendron are a few of the treasures that visitors will be able to spot at the Hanemans’. One stretch of the backyard included an above-ground pool from the previous homeowners, but David got rid of the pool and had aspirations of putting in a rose garden. However, since the lighting conditions were not conducive to that idea, he instead put in a fountain surrounded by hostas, azaleas, woodruff, and other plants tucked in and around a circular stone walkway. During the tour, David will also have a few of his pen and ink illustrations - he specializes in historic buildings, animals, and plants - on display throughout the garden. The Marietta Garden Tour will also feature gardens at the homes of Glen and Judith Kennedy-Mazis, Bonnie Reitz, Carrie Muller and Bill Dalzell,

Organizers encourage individuals to purchase tickets in advance from any Lions Club member or at the following Elizabethtown locations: Cocker’s Towing, 355 Hershey Road; Donnie G. Boyer and
Company, 112 S. Market St.; Gruber Upholstery, 505 N. Market St., Suite C; Custom Auto Repairs and Sales, 2327 S. Market St.; and Sloan’s Norlanco Pharmacy, 428 Cloverleaf Road. Only a limited number of barbecue tickets will be available on the day of the event. Food and beverages will also be available to purchase at the event from local food vendors like Boothy’s BBQ, Udder Bliss Creamery, and Meat the Browns. Lions John Lerch and Glen Leib emphasized that, as always, the purpose of the show is to raise funds for the various causes that the Lions support in the Elizabethtown community. This year, the club has a new partnership with the Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS) Mini-THON to raise funds for Four Diamonds, which covers medical expenses not paid for by insurance for pediatric cancer patients at
Penn State Children’s Hospital. Aside from Four Diamonds, Lerch said that the Elizabethtown Lions’ primary charitable focuses for this year are the Elizabethtown and Rheems fire departments, Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown, United Churches of Elizabethtown, Elizabethtown Community Housing and Outreach Services (ECHOS), scholarships for EAHS graduating seniors, and Elizabethtown Area School District. Lions Club members also offer support for people in need of vision services and diabetes prevention and control services, as Lerch noted that diabetes is one of the leading causes of blindness in the nation. At the show, club members will present donations to the Rheems VFD, Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown, and United Churches of Elizabethtown. called at events for 27 consecutive evenings, said that most dances are in the Plus category. Dave noted that he has called for groups that danced in swimming pools, on lawns, and on the beach. More than once, a group of dancers would go to a restaurant after a dance and ask if they could dance there. “After a while they would push tables back,” recalled Dave. “There was no music.” “They would just dance what he was calling,” finished Doris. Dave judged the square dancing at the annual Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg for about 20 years. “We judged on dancing skills, timing, execution of calls,” he said. Doris remembers when the couple attended a national square dancing convention in Atlantic City in 1976 with about 27,000 other dancers. Although the pair has not danced in a while, they highly recommend dancing for coordination and exercise. “It’s good for your brain,” said Doris. “It’s good for your (heart),” added Dave. Readers who would like to know more about the free lessons may call or text 717-314-7570.

By 1976, Dave was ready to crank things up a notch. “I went to callers school in Harrisonburg, Va.,” said Dave. “There were four callers that ran the school, and (students) got up early and went to class morning, afternoon, and evening.” Dave explained that calling came naturally to him, but he sometimes heard other students practicing calls as late as 2 a.m. “There are different types of calling,” Dave noted. Singing calls are done to familiar songs. Dave used “Me and My Shadow” often. Dave also likes to do calling that is referred to as “hash” or “patter.” “That is when I put the needle down (on the record) and the dancers do whatever I call. I tear them apart and put them back together.” Dave is licensed to call through Callerlab, the International Association of Square Dance Callers, and the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers. Square dances are divided into Mainstream, which are the most basic; Plus, which are a bit beyond basic; and Advanced, for those who wish to go beyond Plus. Dave, who noted that he once

Classes will begin on Thursday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m. The Kreiters first experienced square dancing at a Lancaster establishment called Worh’s Play Barn, which was located behind the stockyards in Lancaster. “We enjoyed it,” commented Doris. “We decided we wanted to take lessons.” The couple headed to Bob Lintner’s home in Lampeter for lessons, which they took for at least a year. “During class I was fascinated with (Bob’s) calling, and I wanted to get into it,” said Dave. “Toward the end of class, he would let me do a singing call.” After the couple finished taking lessons and founded the club, they held a dance class for teenagers at the old Lititz Rec Center, which was located in Lititz Springs Park. “We finally advertised the class and a couple of the guys and girls got together, and we discussed what to name the group and came up with the Swing Thru,” said Dave. They were also involved in dances in the area and around the state. “ We went to a lot of square dances and to the convention at State College,” recalled Doris.

All Women Welcome!
The Milanof-Schock Library and Mount Joy Rotary Club are planning several events in September aimed at raising awareness of suicide and some of the suicide prevention resources available to the community. “We know there’s a need for this,” said Mount Joy Rotary Club co-president Mark Rorabaugh. “Our theme is ‘Inspiring Hope,’ and that’s what we’re trying to do - to remind people that there is help and you don’t have to be hopeless.” Rorabaugh and Rotary co-president Greg Sallade, along with four other Rotarians, completed a suicide prevention training event in March that went over ways to help people who may be struggling with depression and anxiety. “A lot of people need this type of help, and we want to help as many as we can,” noted Sallade. On Wednesday, Sept. 11, a panel discussion on suicide and a candlelight vigil are set to take place at the Milanof-Schock Library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy. Informational displays will be set up in the library for visitors beginning at 6 p.m. that day and will remain on display for the duration of September. At 6:30 p.m., representatives from Mental Health America (MHA) of Lancaster, Pathways Center for Grief and Loss, and Compeer will discuss the impact of suicide and how people can help others dealing with depression and anxiety, as well as how to become more aware of the signs of suicide and resources available. A questionand-answer session will follow the moderated forum. The candlelight vigil will begin at approximately 7:30 p.m. at the library’s flagpole. Registration for the discussion is requested and may be completed by calling 717-653-1510 or visiting https://mslibrary.org. On Saturday, Sept. 14, the public is invited to participate in a Suicide Awareness and Prevention Walk, rain or shine, at Rotary Park, 201 Fairview St., Mount Joy. Participants are welcome to bring strollers and dogs on leashes. Registration
and displays will open at 8:30 a.m. The walk will begin at 9 a.m., with participants completing a loop just under 2 miles. Library executive director and Rotarian Barbara Basile explained that at the park, pairs of shoes will be on display to honor the lives of the all the individuals whose lives were lost to suicide in Lancaster County in 2018. Four stations with educational components will be set up along the walk for participants to pause, learn, and reflect. Participants will receive a ribbon to tie to an Empowerment Tree that will be in a wheelbarrow at the walk before being moved to and planted at the library. Part of each ribbon will be tied to the tree, and Basile said that individuals may keep the other part to serve as a reminder of their commitment to help others. “The idea is that everybody can (commit to) reach out to someone,” said Basile, noting that she hopes events like this will help to lessen the stigma surrounding mental illness and suicide. For more information about these events, readers may search for “Mount Joy Rotary” on Facebook or visit https://mslibrary.org. For details on the Rotary Club or its projects, individuals may call Sallade at 717-648-0510. Additional information on suicide prevention and awareness, including a list of some of the risk factors for suicide, is available at www.mhalancaster.org. Lancaster Crisis Intervention provides a 24-hour telephone response service to people experiencing desperation, loss of control, or suicidal thoughts, and the service may be reached at 717-394-2631.

Pairs of empty shoes will be on display to signify those whose lives were lost to suicide in Lancaster County in 2018.

A veterans’ memorial ceremony, during which a veteran of the Spanish-American War will be honored, will be held at 9:30 a.m. The ceremony will include a march to Middle Octorara’s old cemetery east of the church, where Ephrata Police Department Chief William Harvey will give an address. The National Sojourners of Pennsylvania will post and retire the colors, and the Washington Memorial Pipe Band will perform several Scottish anthems. The Washington Memorial Pipes and Drums will also lead a procession of athletes and Scottish clan representatives from the Highland Games field to the main performance area in time for the opening ceremony, which will begin at 11:40 a.m. Guitarist and singer Charlie Zahm will lead the singing of the American national anthem and “Scotland the Brave.” Zahm, the pipe band, fiddler Tad Marks, harpist Kendrah Tozzo, Fire in the Glen, and the Rehoboth Welsh Choir will perform throughout the day. Foundation president Barry Girvin noted that he is especially looking forward to Zahm’s presentation about the Jacobite risings, during which Zahm will tell stories and sing songs. The festival is a celebration of the Scottish birthright of the Covenanters who settled in southern Lancaster and Chester counties. “We have a lot of good heritage events (during the festival),” said foundation treasurer Donna McCool. “We’ve got the haggis ceremony, fiddling demonstrations, and sheep herding. We have things for children, too, which is new.” Additionally, Scottish clans and organizations will be represented at the festival, and vendors will sell Scottish goods and food. American food will be available for purchase as well. Fiber artists are slated to demonstrate spinning and weaving, and Irish dances will be demonstrated as well. The festival will be held rain or shine. McCool noted that weather has impacted attendance in previous years, but the event continues to grow. “(Last year) was the first year for the dancers, so a lot of parents came, and people came to see the dancers,” McCool said. “I think the Highland Games are really interesting and impressive. Of course, it’s not a festival without bagpipes. The bagpipe competition and the bands are amazing.” An admission cost has been set for adults and teenagers. Children age 12 and under will be admitted free of charge. Free parking will be available on-site. The proceeds will benefit the ongoing effort to maintain and restore the historic Covenanter church and its attached oneroom school museum. Both sides of the structure will be open during the festival. Visitors are welcome to explore the museum’s archives to research the histories of Scottish immigrants and Bart Township schools. For more information about the festival or to obtain discounted admission tickets, readers may visit www.covenanterscottishfestival.com or search for “6th Annual Covenanter Scottish Festival” on Facebook.

Paul Davis Holds Food Collection Paul Davis of Central Pennsylvania in Lancaster was among the franchise office winners in the 2019 Paul Davis CAN Charity Drive. Paul Davis Restoration Inc. staff members at the company’s Jacksonville, Fla., headquarters and franchise offices across the U.S. and Canada participated in
the fundraising initiative to collect cans of food for people and pets. During June, employees at participating offices collected cans of food and made structures using the cans. On July 1, participants posted photos of their structures on Paul Davis’ Facebook page,
and voting via “likes” on the posts began on July 5. On Aug. 1, the winning structures were announced for prizes and office parties. Winners were recognized for the greatest number of cans collected, the best images, and the greatest number of staff members participating. Each office donated its collected food to a local charity.
Paul Davis of Central Pennsylvania, which has the franchise code LLCO, was recognized in the contest. “LLCO Animal House” won an office party for collecting and donating the most food, with 1,188 cans. The office donated its collected cans to the Pet Pantry of Lancaster County, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that meets the needs of families
and animals in the community through the operation of a pet food bank, low-cost spay/neuter and vaccination programs, and support of animal rescue through an adoption program. For more information about the Pet Pantry, readers may visit http://petpantrylc.org. Nationwide, Paul Davis collected more than 3,100 cans of food.
