Bocce Teams Earn Success
The Lancaster County Bird Club will offer several field trips and a program in September. The public is invited free of charge. For the trips, participants must register with the trip leader no later than 6 p.m. the day before the trip with the exception of the Raptor Watch on Sunday, Sept. 25.
The club will meet Thursday, Sept. 8, at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. This meeting, which is free and open to the public, will not be recorded. After a short business meeting, a representative of ZooAmerica will present “Paws, Claws, Scales, and Tails,” a program featuring live animals.
At the meeting, Barbara Hunsberger will be honored for her 12 years of service as club president, which wrapped up this past spring. Board members from Appalachian Audubon Society in Harrisburg will provide an update on the Lights Out Harrisburg initiative, which protects birds during their migration by minimizing outdoor lighting during peak migration times. For more details on the meeting, call 717-856-3851 or 717725-2717.
On Saturday, Sept. 10, the destination will be Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area with a 7:30 a.m. and/or a 1 p.m. start. Contact Ted Nichols at 717-856-3851 or tanicholsii@gmail.com. The emphasis of this trip is fall migrants such as warblers, flycatchers, thrushes, and shorebirds.
On Sunday, Sept. 11, the destination is Pumping Station Road off Route 322, west of Brickerville. This is a popular spot for warblers and fall migrants. The activity will have a 7 a.m. start. Contact Bruce Carl at 717-368-4824 or hrdabrd@gmail.com.
On Saturday, Sept. 24, the venue will be Noel Dorwart Park, 408 Parklawn Court, Lancaster, in East Hempfield Township with a 7 a.m. start. Target birds are fall migrants. Contact Emily Broich at 717-333-9146 or emilybroich@gmail.com.
On Sept. 25, the activity will be the Ironville Community Park Raptor Watch starting at 9:30 a.m. Target species include broad-winged and sharp-shinned hawks, American kestrel, osprey, and bald eagle. The viewing area is level and comfortable. Folks may come and go as they please and may want to bring a chair and lunch. Restrooms and a pavilion are available. Contact Carl Groff at 717-471-9969 or fledge19@verizon.net.

Chorale frompg 10
The chorale is seeking gifted and serious singers age 15 and up of all voice parts. Qualifications include a desire to sing great choral music, an ability to sing moderately complex and challenging music, and a willingness to practice individually to learn one’s part. Rehearsals and performances typically include a focus on the worship and praise of God. The chorale’s repertoire focuses on sacred classics and traditional anthems. Upcoming repertoire includes “If You Love Me” by the 16th-century English composer Thomas Tallis and “Cantique de Jean Racine” by 19thcentury French composer Gabriel Faure.
Rehearsals will be held at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, on Sundays from 3 to 5 p.m. beginning on Sept. 11. This season’s performance will take place on Sunday, Nov. 20. The featured work will be “Gloria” by Antonio Vivaldi, performed with professional soloists and a chamber orchestra.
No preregistration is required. Singers may register at the Sept. 11 or 18 rehearsal. Registration will open at 2 p.m., and the registration fee includes a music packet.
