ManheimChristian Day School (MCDS) is outgrowing its space, and that’s a good thing. The school, which serves students in prekindergarten through grade eight, is in the midst of a $3.5 million capital campaign to make room for more students, and two upcoming events will support the campaign.

On Saturday, Sept. 16, the school will hold a car wash on-site at 686 Lebanon Road, Manheim. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Payment for the car wash will be by donation.

“We plan to have a lot of our students helping with the car wash, particularly our middle school students,” said board member Garrett Derr. “We wanted to find a way to include some of our students in the process of our expansion and building project.”

On Thursday, Sept. 21, the school will host a fundraiser banquet at Chiques Church, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and the event will run until 9 p.m.

“Our guest speaker for the evening is Matt Maher,” Derr said, noting that he is not to be confused with the Christian singer of the

room for about 400 people in the space, so we’re hoping to have a large crowd,” Derr remarked. Once tables have been reserved, reservations will open to individuals.

In 1823, a small church began in Manheim, with members gathering in homes and meeting houses for worship. That was the foundation of Salem United Methodist Church, which will celebrate its 200th anniversary with a special worship service at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 24. The service will be held at the church, 140 N. Penn St., Manheim.

The public is invited to the service, which will recognize 50-year members and previous pastors. The Salem Singers, a bell choir and a special bell ensemble will perform during the service. The Rev. Jennifer Freymoyer, district superintendent of the church conference, will deliver the message.

From its humble beginnings, Salem United Methodist Church grew steadily. In 1837, the members bought a small lot on North Prussian Street, which is now North Main Street, and erected a small stone structure. In 1883, the church moved a few doors south on Main Street and constructed a

framed building. Until 1968, the church was known as Salem United Brethren Church before the Evangelical United Brethren Church and the Methodist Church denominations merged, and Salem became Salem United Methodist Church. The current church on North Penn Street opened its doors in 1973 and

MCDS is looking for people to sponsor tables for groups of eight people at the banquet. “There is

The expansion project at MCDS began after attendance surged at the faith-based private school. “We got to the point where we were turning a lot of families away because we just didn’t have the space for them,” Derr shared. “We started out with one class per grade level, with the exception of prekindergarten and kindergarten, which each had two classes.” Now the school has expanded to include two first-grade classes, with plans to continue doubling classes, one each year, through fourth grade.

The renovations will include five new classrooms and furnishings for 100 new students, a kitchen expansion, bathroom renovations and more. “To be sure everything is up to code and ADA compliant, we will

Cuteness will be on display when the Manheim Farm Show hosts the Children’s Parade. Entries are now being sought for the parade, which will be held on Monday, Oct. 9. Judging will begin at 5:30 p.m. behind the Manheim Central football stadium off of Memorial Drive, and the parade will step off at 6:15 p.m. The rain date will be Tuesday, Oct. 10.

be putting in an elevator,” Derr stated. “We’ll also be repaving and adding parking.”

The renovation process revealed additional needs at the building as well, he said, adding, “We realized we need a whole new septic system and a whole new HVAC system for the entire school.”

Plans are underway for the project to begin at the end of the current school year, which will conclude a little earlier in May to accommodate construction. Derr said the school hopes to finish the bulk of the work over the summer of 2024, with students returning after Labor Day.

Derr knows firsthand the benefits of attending MCDS, as his three daughters are students at the school. “One of the best things about our school is it’s just a family-

centered environment,” he said. “We’re really excited about everything that’s happening here. We really desire for our students to grow up in a faith-based environment, a place where parents can send their kids to receive a solid education and grow up in a Christ-centered space.”

Parade frompg 1

whichincludes tractors, tricycles and bicycles, as well as Best Decorated Wagon and Mechanized Float.

People are encouraged to get creative with their

entries. “Years and years ago, we used to have really great mechanized floats,” recalled Kowalski, who has helped with the parade for close to 20 years. “One year, there was a merry-go-round, and when they pulled

the float, it would actually turn. Another year, there was a Ferris wheel that spun, too.”

Cash prizes are offered for Most Outstanding Float; Most Outstanding Wheeled Vehicle, Wagon, Stroller or Coach; Most Outstanding Child Walking; and first, second, third and fourth places in each division.

Kowalski noted that the parade used to be called the Baby Parade, but she changed the name a few years ago to be inviting to more entrants.

“I didn’t think a 6-year-old wanted to be in a parade for babies,” she said with a laugh.

Participants do not have to be Manheim residents to be in the parade, she said, adding, “We welcome anybody from any town.”

The parade offers an opportunity to have fun and enjoy the Farm Show beyond agriculture, she remarked. “If you don’t have an animal to show or crops to show, this is a great way to be a part of the Farm Show community in a different aspect,” Kowalski

shared. “It’s just fun.”

This year, online registration for the parade will be offered for the first time.

To register, visit http://tiny url.com/53xket4m. The registration deadline is Oct. 7 at 9 p.m. An entry form and complete list of categories can be found by searching for “Manheim Farm Show Children’s Parade” on Facebook. For more information, contact Kowalski at 717669-0051 or lisagkowalski@ gmail.com.

Building good habits through biking

“It’s about a creating a set of habits that says, ‘I can do this,’ instead of, ‘I think that’s too hard,’” Lee shared.

Forty-three teens experienced what it’s like to “do hard things,” the motto of Lifecycles, when they participated in Challenge Rides this summer. One team rode 320 miles from the Pittsburgh area to Washington,

D.C., while another team rode 535 miles from Portland, Maine, to Valley Forge. Three other teams completed a 380mile journey around Lake Champlain and Lake George on the border of New York and Vermont.

“They all did very well on the rides,” Lee said. “They dealt with fatigue, rain and heat, but they pushed through, and they all came back very proud of themselves.”

Lifecycles began in 2015, when Lee and his wife, Marcie, created the program to provide friendship, mentoring and bike riding, all with a faith focus. The organization is open to boys and girls ages 12 to 18, and all equipment and programming is provided free of charge.

“There are no tryouts,” Lee commented. “Anyone who wants to join can join.”

Participants do not need to be experienced bike riders, he noted, adding that youths are placed in a group based on their skill level.

Lifecycles has a mission of building young men and women of character. “We do it through long-distance cycling,” Lee remarked. “We invest in the kids, and we provide a faith-based curriculum, one for the girls and one for the boys. The program is all about outdoor adventure and building self-confidence.”

Five teams of youths completed Challenge Rides this summer through Lifecycles.

Community

Festival

He noted that the lessons learned in Lifecycles can be applied to school, work and life outside of biking. “You build a habit pattern that has a bit of a courage and a confidence aspect to it, instead of setting your goals so low because you’re afraid of failure,” he explained. “This is a positive and encouraging environment where boys and girls can discover more of their gifts, growing into the person they were created to become.”

This season of Lifecycles will wrap up in mid-October, and

isthe home to 335 members.

Lisa Palmquist, chair of the church council and director of Salem Family Ministries, said the longevity of the church can be attributed to its involvement in the community. “We really believe in community outreach,” she remarked. “One of the ministries we have is our Wednesday night supper. We offer a free meal at 5:30 on Wednesdays from September through May, and that is very popular.”

The church also holds a free coat drive in the fall for people of all ages, hosts a Christmas angel tree for families in Manheim Central School District and offers a community Easter egg roll. “We also have a Blessing Box on-site for members of the community, and we hold VBS each year,” Palmquist said.

As Salem United Methodist Church looks to the next century, the members are eager to continue embracing the needs of the community.

“We have a very open, welcoming congregation,” Palmquist shared. “We invite people to come and check out the church and our family. Our congregation is very family oriented. We welcome children of all ages.”

Salem United Methodist Church holds worship services at 9 a.m. on Sundays, followed by Sunday school for people of all ages at 10 a.m. For more information or to inquire about receiving assistance from the church, call the office at 717-665-2331.
