Greatthings happen when women on a mission get together. Lancaster County Women for Good formed last year with the goal of raising money for local nonprofits. So far, the group has donated more than $23,000, with 284 women contributing to the effort.

Most recently, the organization presented a check for $7,000 to Arch Street Center at Lancaster County Women for Good’s quarterly Gather & Grant meeting. Located in Lancaster, Arch Street Center provides support and services for adults living with mental illness.

Lancaster County Women for Good began as an outreach of Grapevine, a social giving platform that brings people together for

philanthropic work. “Grapevine initiated a bunch of groups in different areas of the country and from that point handed it over to local leadership,” said founding member Anna Horst. She’s joined by the local

When Jennifer Placeway relocated to Manheim from the suburbs of Chicago, she noticed something was missing.

The mother of three young children had been involved in a play group with other moms and kids in her old neighborhood, and she wanted to bring that community connection to her new home.

Jennifer created Play Café, a free,

weekly play group for children from birth to age 5 with a parent or caregiver. The group meets on Thursdays from 9 to 11 a.m. at Manheim Grace Church, 333 E. High St. The next session will begin on Sept. 28.

“We meet every week during the school year, with a few exceptions like around Christmastime,” Jennifer said. “We also meet once a month over the summer.”

She describes Play Café as a very relaxed, easygoing gathering. “It’s

leadership team of group host Joelle Terranova and event coordinators Susan Klapkin and Kirstin Knopp.

Each local group sets its own fundraising parameters. For the Lancaster group, women are asked to commit to giving a minimum of $50 per quarter. In the weeks leading up to the group’s Gather & Grant meetings - which are

held in February, May, August and November - members may nominate a nonprofit they’d like to support.

“The nonprofit can have a national or global reach, but it must serve our local community,” Horst explained. “It also must be a 501(c)(3) in good standing.”

From the list of nominees, members vote for their favorites, and representatives from the top three choices are invited to come to a Gather & Grant meeting to give a presentation about their organization and answer any questions. The group then votes on the recipient of that quarter’s donation.

As of now, the organization raises all of its funds through member donations, but Horst said organizers are looking into sponsorships and

Fundraisers couldn’t generate financial resources without generous donors, and nonprofits couldn’t perform their philanthropic work without fundraisers.

Four months after presenting its Hope for Freedom Gala, Hope.Inspire.Love. will conduct the second of its two yearly fundraisers, Freedom Walk, on Saturday, Oct. 7, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Musser Park, 135 N. Lime St., Lancaster. Hope.Inspire.Love is in

its eighth year of battling human trafficking and sexual exploitation, and the event is designed to raise money for the fight against human trafficking and to raise the awareness of its effects.

“Fundraising is vital. It’s the glue,” said Hope.Inspire.Love CEO and president Amy Thurston, who founded the organization with her husband, Steve. “Nonprofits rely on the community. We need their support financially. The survivors know the community is behind their healing, and we’re in the See Freedom Walk pg 8

very casual,” she stated. “You can come and go as you please. We have a bounce house, riding toys, blocks and cars and things like that for kids to play with.”

The group takes a break about 10 a.m., halfway through the program, for snacks for the kids and coffee for the adults, and Jennifer reads a story to the participants.

“It’s just a nice opportunity for moms to come and con-

nect with other moms and let their children play for free in a safe environment,” she remarked.

Jennifer and her family moved to Manheim when her husband, Josh, took a job as the pastor at Manheim Grace Church. “I saw a real need for a group like this in our community,” she said, noting that she started Play Café last fall. “My kids really need a place to burn off their energy and run around, especially in the win-

ter and especially when they’re not in school yet.”

She received a positive response to her idea for the group, noting, “We were able to get some donations from our church and our community for the bounce house and other toys. Play Café has really been growing through word of mouth. … We have anywhere from five to 20 kids each week.”

Play Café serves both the children and adults who attend, she said, emphasizing the focus on fellowship. “The kids can socialize with other kids their own age, and the adults can meet each other as well,” she commented. “It’s a way for you to connect with other moms or grandmothers

that maybe you haven’t met before and who you might have something in common with.”

She encourages anyone who cares for small children to come to Play Café. “Come and check it out and see what you think,” she said. “It’s a really great group of people.” There is no need to sign up for Play Café. Participants can just show up at the church during the meeting time. Jennifer has created a Remind text that people can join to receive schedule changes or updates by texting @mgplay cafe to 81010. Information may also be found at www.manheimgrace.org by clicking on “Play Café” under the “Ministries” tab.

fundraisers in the future.

Along with Gather & Grant meetings, which are usually held at Southern Market in downtown Lancaster, the group members also meet once a month for Girl’s Night Out.

“We’ll get together to support a local business, and it’s an extra bonus if the business is woman-owned,” Horst said. “It’s an opportunity to have fun, socialize, ask questions about our organization and meet other women.”

While most Gather & Grants and Girl’s Night Out events are held on the second Wednesday of the month, October’s Girl’s Night Out will be held on the third Wednesday of the month due to the Manheim Farm Show. It will happen at Horst Arts, 17 N. Main St., Manheim, beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 18.

For Horst, Lancaster County Women for Good has offered an easy way to give back to local organizations while also making friends.

“I love the idea of making philanthropy accessible to everyone,” Horst said. “I also like that it gives everyone an opportunity to meet like-minded women who

have similar outlooks on philanthropy.”

She said women who are involved with local nonprofits are especially encouraged to join. “It’s a great way to network and to meet potential volunteers or donors and get to know people who can support your organization,” she stated.

Golf tournament to benefit nonprofits

Ray Shirk’s Big Swing Golf Tournament and Silent Auction is set for Monday, Oct. 2, at 12:30 p.m. at the Iron Valley Golf Club, 201 Iron Valley Drive, Lebanon. Proceeds will benefit VisionCorps, the Lancaster Science Factory, and the Joshua Montpetit Foundation.

A silent auction will be held along with the golf tournament, and donations of goods and services are

sought. To offer a donation, contact Lisa Shirk at 717875-1516.

The golf tournament, one of VisionCorps’ fundraisers since 2013, was established by Lisa Shirk, a former VisionCorps Foundation trustee, in memory of her husband, Ray.

Ray was a businessman, entrepreneur and visionary. He was the founder and CEO of the Securus Group, a multifaceted insurance firm that

was named among the Best Places to Work in PA in 2008 and 2011. Lisa started the golf tournament to honor Ray’s love of golf and the local organizations he cared about. It is now an annual event. Lisa noted that she and Ray appreciated the help their grandson received from VisionCorps.

The Freedom Walk is a 2mile walk carried out silently through the streets of Lancaster city, beginning and ending in Musser Park. In 2022, the walk raised $20,000 for the mission of Hope.Inspire.Love., and this year, Thurston is hoping to raise that and $5,000 more.

“We walk on the sidewalk, in single file, in silence,” said Thurston. “There’s something bold about silence. Actions don’t need words. That’s why we do it.”

Since its inception, the Freedom Walk has included live music at the park to enhance its atmosphere and a survivors’ tent for people to learn firsthand about the devastating effects of human trafficking.

“The reality is that (human trafficking) has affected all of us in the community in different ways,” said Thurston. “It takes a community to fight it. What we’ve realized is that a lot of people want to help. The Freedom Walk allows people to serve. This Freedom Walk has power.”

Hope.Inspire.Love. seeks to combat sex trafficking and sexual exploitation through trauma-informed mentorship, outreach and awareness and prevention education.

“Our (mission) isn’t a shortterm relationship; it’s a longterm solution,” Thurston said. “We started with prevention and education. But I said,

Flu vaccinations now available at Giant, Martin’s

The Giant Company has announced that flu vaccinations are now available at all 133 Giant and Martin’s instore pharmacies.

Giant and Martin’s pharmacies offer several types of flu shots for children, adults and seniors. Most insurance plans cover flu shots with no copay, including Medicare Part B. Flu shots are administered by immunizing pharmacists, subject to state regulations. No appointment is needed.

Through Saturday, Oct. 7, select Giant and Martin’s pharmacies will once again offer drive-up flu vaccinations where patients can pull into a spot in the designated area of the store parking lot and be vaccinated without leaving their car. Store locations offering drive-up flu vaccinations as well as the dates and times will soon be available at www.giant foodstores.com/pages/ tgc-vaccines or www.mar tinsfoods.com/pages/ tgc-vaccines.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone age 6 months and older get a flu vaccination. While the CDC recommends flu shots by the end of October for everyone age 6 months and older, certain groups of people are at greater risk for complications from the flu. These groups include people with diabetes, pregnant women, adults over 65, children under age 5, those with asthma and other chronic lung diseases, those with kidney and liver disorders, heart disease patients and those with compromised immune systems.

To find the nearest Giant or Martin’s pharmacy, visit www.giantfoodstores.com or www.martinsfoods.com or download the free Giant or Martin’s pharmacy app.
