Rebounding From Addiction Former NBA Player To Speak At Manheim Central By Chelsea Peifer

“I will make good decisions and support others. I will be true to myself. I will stand up to drugs and alcohol. I will celebrate life. I am good enough. Purple. Proud.” Those are the words of the Project Purple Pledge, which 15 Manheim Central High School (MCHS) students have already taken. MCHS teacher Edward Herbert said those students are now planning events throughout the school year to continually reinforce the message of Project Purple and

encourage more students to take the pledge. The Project Purple initiative got its start when Chris Herren, a former professional basketball player, spoke at a high school in 2011 sharing his story about reaching his lifelong dream to play in the NBA only to lose it all to a struggle with drug and alcohol addiction. Herren, who had played for the Denver Nuggets and Boston Celtics, has been drug-free and alcohol-free since 2008 and now shares his story of abuse and recovery publicly through The Herren Project, an effort to educate youths about the dangers of substance abuse and to help them to make positive life choices. See Project Purple pg 7

Ryan Reflects On Battle Of Mogadishu By Chelsea Peifer

National Day Of Prayer For Mental Health Service Planned By Ann Mead Ash

This is only Gwen Didden’s second year helping to organize the Lancaster County National Day of Prayer for Mental Illness Recovery and Understanding, but as director of Faith Friendship Ministries in Mountville, Didden fully understands the significance of the event to those dealing with mental health issues. “The (prayer service) is important because it brings hope,” said Didden. “This (event) couples hope and prayer (to offer) spiritual guidance (that) is so important for people who are managing mental illness or living with people who are dealing with mental illness.” See Prayer Service pg 2

Gwen Didden (left) and Cathi Myers (right) are two of the organizers of the National Day of Prayer for Mental Illness Recovery and Understanding service that will be held at Calvary Church on Oct. 11. No Longer Alone Ministries and Faith Friendship Ministries are sponsoring the event with assistance from HandiVangelism Ministries.

The Battle of Mogadishu took place 25 years ago, but the details remain fresh in the mind of retired United States Army Maj. Timothy Ryan. “Not a day goes by that I don’t think about being over there with my guys or something that happened over there,” said Ryan. “I remember it so vividly.” The Battle of Mogadishu was fought on October 3 and 4 in 1993 as various United States military elite special operations units were in Mogadishu, Somalia, to destabilize the government and bring humanitarian aid, along with the support of UNOSOM II (United Nations Operation in Somalia). Ultimately the goal of the mission was accomplished, but things became deadly during the Battle of Mogadishu. Details of the events were later published in the 1999 book “Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern See Mogadishu pg 14

and Didden, as well as Clara Ames, executive director of NLAM, and Vicki Bollman, a volunteer with Minds Renewed. A number of experienced speakers will give presentations at the event. Dr. Karla Campanella, a family doctor and a missionary who is now a psychiatrist in the Philhaven system, will speak on the topic “Involuntary Commitment or 302.” Campanella will delve into what involuntary commitment involves, who can initiate it, and when to use it. “She will help people understand that process,” said Myers, who noted that Campanella has been well received as a past speaker. Dr. Susan Cabouli, a psychotherapist with more than 20 years of experience, will speak about practical tips for finding hope, including an explanation of the LEAP method developed by Dr. Xavier Amador. LEAP stands for Listen-Empathize-Agree-Partner, and the method is designed to help a caregiver gain the trust of a patient. LEAP involves empathizing without judgment. Loice Byler, founder of a ministry that helps those who struggle with anxiety and depression, especially women, will share her personal story of being a mental health consumer, including her acceptance and denial of treatment in the past. “She has seen a difference in her life when she has accepted treatment,” said Myers. “We thought that would be a good viewpoint to share.” Myers added that Byler will also offer practical tips and words of hope. Each year, organizers choose theme verses for the observance. This year’s verses include Psalm 33:22, which reads, “May your unfailing love be with us, Lord, even as we put our hope in you.” Another theme verse is Hebrews 10:23, which reads, “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.” Myers reported that the service will include congregational prayer, reading of the Scripture, and time for small group prayer as requested. There is no cost to attend the service, and registration is not necessary. Readers who have questions may call 717-390-4891 or 717-285-5596.

Multiple fundraisers were held, including a dinner featuring authentic Indonesian cuisine. Participants were required to go through a slightly abbreviated version of the EMM application process that other shortterm applicants undergo. Much like EMM’s other global workers, participants experienced discipleship, culture, and language training in preparation for the trip. Chamber Choir, Hartono posted a video on Facebook proposing three languages for peace: smiles, singing, and taking pictures. The trip occurred in the wake of five bombings in the Indonesian city of Surabaya in May. Three churches were among the targets of the attacks. After intensive security analyses, EMM, its Indonesian partners, and MCCL determined that the risk level for the choir was low. Families of choir members were able to make the final decision on whether to allow their children to participate in the trip. Nearly all of the families decided to continue with the trip as planned. Choir members used the entire year to prepare for their third international trip with EMM’s GO! Summer program, a short-term mission exposure opportunity offered during the summer. Both local and global opportunities are available. Previous international trips included locations such as Germany, Albania, and Bulgaria. The choir’s preparation included learning several Indonesian songs and visiting the Philadelphia

The Chamber Choir of the Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster (MCCL) participated in a GO! Summer mission assignment with Eastern Mennonite Missions (EMM) during the summer. The 29 participating students visited Indonesia from June 26 to July 14. The choir, directed by Rosemary Blessing, performed in four airports, multiple museums, several Mennonite churches, two cultural festivals also featuring Muslim and Buddhist performances, a rice field, the tip of a volcano, two Islamic boarding schools, a palace, and one mosque. At some of the venues, the students were able to have faith conversations with Muslims. The trip challenged participants to widen their worldviews. These interfaith experiences were organized by the director of the Indonesian Mennonite Diakonal Service, Paulus Hartono, who has worked with peacemaking and Christian-Muslim relations in his city of Solo and throughout the country for the past 20 years. Community Invited To 20th Annual Porchwalk By Ann Mead Ash

“About a half dozen (of the artisans are) new,” said Porchwalk organizer Gretchen Smith, who is also one of up to 40 artists who will take part in the 20th annual Lititz Artisans’ Porchwalk, a free event that will be held rain or shine in several locations in historic Lititz on Friday, Sept. 28, and Saturday, Sept. 29. Visitors to the six properties where items will be on display may peruse the offerings from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day of the event. Smith, who makes jewelry, noted that organizers avoid having duplicate types of art at each location so that each home is like an art show unto itself. New artisans this year will include Kim Bleacher, who creates unique interior and exterior metal décor, and Vickie Geiman, who will display decorative painting and multimedia art. New artist Jenn Avery will showcase crafted gourds, and Elizabeth Gates, also a first-time exhibitor, will offer journals, boxes, and papers for sale. According to Smith, the juried artists and craftspeople who take

part will bring a mix of fabric arts, pottery, paper art, paintings, and soaps. Ceramics, wooden creations, scherenschnitte, painted slate, fraktur, quilted items, photography, fused glass, and other arts will also be represented. Although the free event is called the Porchwalk, Smith noted that a driving route is recommended for those who take part. She estimates the total walking distance of the route to be about 2 miles. She noted that when the weather is nice, people do walk, but the Locust Street stop can be a challenge because of the distance from the other locations. Smith added that it is not necessary to complete the route in the recommended order. Moravian Manor is one of the sponsors of the Porchwalk, and the lawns along Moravian Avenue will be filled with a number of creations from artists. In the Zinzendorf Room of Steinman Hall at Moravian Manor, 300 W. Lemon St., Lititz, a bake sale and benefit silent auction, including pieces donated by the participating artisans, will be held. The auction will raise money for the Lamplighters,

According to https://the herrenproject.org, a group of students that had been sitting in the front row wearing purple shirts at one his speaking engagements in 2011 told him afterward that they wore purple to signify their sobriety and choice to not use drugs and alcohol. Inspired by the students, Herren began encouraging other students at his speaking engagements to take a pledge to “Go Purple.” The Herren Project website estimates that 885,000 individuals have registered to “Go Purple” since 2012. Local students and adults will have the chance to take the pledge when Herren speaks at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 2, in the auditorium at Manheim Central Middle School, 261 White Oak Road, Manheim. and MCFEE believe strongly in Herren’s message and the need to work toward building drug-free communities. Herren’s presentation will last approximately one hour, followed by time for questions. Audiences will hear Herren’s experiences, including growing up in Fall River, Mass.; playing Division 1 and NBA basketball; and struggling with addiction and finally achieving sobriety. During the school day on Oct. 2, Herren will address the entire MCHS student body and staff. Any student who takes the Project Purple pledge will receive a purple T-shirt and sign a schoolwide banner attesting to the pledge. The banner will later be on display inside MCHS. Herbert said that the MCHS students who have taken the pledge so far are helping to create awareness for Herren’s upcoming visit through videos and printed materials, as well as personal discussions.

Former NBA player Chris Herren will share his story of addiction and recovery during a free presentation at Manheim Central Middle School at 7 p.m. on Oct. 2. Herren will also address students and staff at Manheim Central High School in an all-school assembly during the school day.

Luncheon from pg 1 The Silent Samaritan Luncheon is a fundraiser for the Silent Samaritan Fund, which provides counseling and other services to women who do not have adequate funds to cover the cost, and the Silent Samaritan Endowment, a permanent fund started in 2015 in the names of Silent Samaritan Fund founders Linda Peacock and Alta Landis. The 2018 luncheon will be held at a new location, Calvary

Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. The luncheon has also been scheduled earlier in the month of November than in the past. This year’s event will be held on Monday, Nov. 12, beginning at 11 a.m., will feature two local women, Manheim Township High School graduate Abby Stewart and her mother, Carol Reichler. The luncheon is open only to women. Stewart and Reichler’s message

is titled “The Power of Individuality and Unconditional Love.” The program will focus on the struggles Stewart encountered as a teenager and how she and her mother persevered together. The Silent Samaritan Fund has given more than $1 million to aid area women. According to Gerald Ressler, Samaritan Counseling Center executive director, “The impact of the Silent Samaritans, in offering financial assistance,

has been enormous.” The fund can be utilized in a variety of ways, including to provide counseling support for women who do not have insurance and to fund counseling center programs. Women wishing to attend the luncheon are asked to make a donation of a designated amount to the fund. Those wishing to attend are asked to register by Wednesday, Oct. 31. Readers who would like to attend may call 717-560-9969. More information may be found at www.scclanc.org/event/ silent-samaritans. Pictured on front: Carol Reichler (left) and her daughter, Abby Stewart (right), will be the speakers at this year’s Silent Samaritan Luncheon, which will be held at Calvary Church on Monday, Nov. 12, beginning at 11 a.m.

There is not much good news when it comes to pancreatic cancer, but the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN) is making strides to change that. The national patient advocacy organization has been creating hope in a comprehensive way through research, patient support, community outreach, and advocacy for a cure since it was founded in 1999. “At one time, no one really knew much about pancreatic cancer, said Lancaster County resident Jill Snyder, whose husband, Aaron Shiley, died from the disease in December 2010. “That has changed in recent years, and today there are so many great resources. Pancreatic cancer has surpassed breast cancer to become the third-leading cause of cancerrelated death in the United States, and the five-year survival rate is still in the single digits at 9 percent. Pancreatic cancer is a leading cause of cancer death largely because there are no detection tools to diagnose the disease in its early stages when surgical removal of any tumors is still possible. To improve those odds, PanCAN has launched an initiative, “The Vision of Progress: Double Pancreatic Cancer Survival by 2020, with the goal of raising $200 million by 2020. With more funding support

and focus, progress and patient outcomes can be significantly improved, organizers said. Pancreatic Cancer Month will be observed in November, and PurpleStride Philadelphia will take place on Saturday, Nov. 3, at Memorial Hall in Fairmount Park in Philadelphia. PurpleStride walks are among the largest sources of funding for PanCAN. Locally, a community night fundraiser will be held on Thursday, Oct. 4, at Isaac’s, 1559 Manheim Pike, Lancaster. From 5 to 9 p.m., a percentage of food and beverage purchases will be donated to efforts for PanCAN. The event has been coordinated by Lancaster County resident Randi Jacobs, a pancreatic cancer survivor and captain of the team Ann’s Dream, which was named for Jacobs’ mother, who passed away from pancreatic cancer at age 74. Meal orders for takeout from the Granite Run eatery may be placed online at www.isaacs restaurants.com using the coupon code FUND. Those who dine in between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. are asked to present a fundraiser form to their servers. The forms may be obtained by emailing Jacobs at randistevej@hotmail.com. Since the death of her husband, Snyder has been an active participant at PanCAN’s annual National Pancreatic Cancer Advocacy Day in Washington, D.C. Held in June, the day offers opportunities for people affected by the disease to meet with their members of Congress to request more funding for medical research. “People need to learn more about pancreatic cancer, Snyder remarked, emphasizing the importance of clinical trials and

Baron Teams Dominate Opponents Last Week By Eric G. Stark

The theme for sports in Manheim last week: The Manheim Steamroller. Girls’ and boys’ soccer, football, tennis and field hockey teams dominated last week, while the volleyball, cross country and golf teams continue to improve. The soccer teams and football team combined to outscore opponents 82-1 last week. More on this later. The girls’ volleyball team was battling through injuries and began last week still not playing with its normal lineup. “Sophomore Elena Kready stepped up and moved into the middle

(from outside) and is playing well,” said head coach Laurie McClure. Though Central beat Middletown Saturday, Sept. 15, the team couldn’t quite keep the errors at a minimum on Monday, Sept. 17 against Schuylkill Valley and Tuesday, versus Ephrata, McClure said. Central lost 25-10, 25-19, 21-25 and 25-15 to SV. Rebecca Keppley paced the Barons with 9 kills and 3 blocks. Abby Nolt added three aces, Ciara Stoner notched 23 digs and Grace Stoltzfus dished out 21 assists. Ephrata posted a 25-12, 25-14 and 25-9 triumph against the Barons. Scoring leaders for Central included Keepley

with two aces and five kills. Kready added a block, Stoner scooped 14 digs and Stoltzfus gave out 11 assists. “The girls are determined to not let this be a set back for the season and to learn from these games,” McClure said. “Moving forward we are looking to control the mental aspect of the game and focus on improving on the next point.” Central was back at it Thursday, Sept. 20 and really came out to play, but just couldn’t pull it out, losing three games to Lampeter-Strasburg by 25-22 scores. McClure said the Barons finally had their normal lineup and hopefully the team will be more comfortable now and ready to take on Section Two teams in the second half of the season. The Barons, who pulled out of the

Warwick Tournament this past weekend, will host a 12-team Tournament this Saturday at 8:30 a.m. BOYS’ SOCCER What a week for the Barons’ boys’ soccer team. Three games. Three shutouts. Three dominating performances, outscoring opponents 11-0 last week. The cherry on top was a 3-0 triumph this past Saturday, Sept. 22 against West York, the second ranked team in District Three Class 3A who entered the contest with a 7-1 record and had not been shutout all year. The Bulldogs only had two shots on goal and one corner. Coach Rod Brenize said his guys are playing unselfish, team ball and playing well across the board. “We did some things to them (West

York) that they clearly weren’t used to,” Brenize said. “Our backline cut off their play. Our midfielders had the better play in the mid and our attackers created dangerous chances by working together. And they finished.” That formula usually equals a win. Brett Kreider, Hunter Hess and Mavrick King scored for the Barons. Earlier in the week, Central beat Garden Spot 4-0 on Thursday, Sept. 20. The Barons scored three times in the first half. Zach Reed had two beautiful crosses that King turned into goals. “Kreider scored on an unassisted goal on a ball that had a nice hook, a bend to it,” Brenize said. Nico Gavala added a goal off his own corner kick on what Brenize said is called an “Olympico goal,” where the right-footer kick found the back of the net on the left side of the goal.

“I thought we played together and as a team,” Brenize said. “We had a lot of through balls and didn’t try to take it through guys.” On Tuesday, Sept. 18 Central beat McCaskey 4-0. Hess recorded a hat trick in the game. Nick Elzer notched the other goal. Brenize noted that his squad started the season with seven of its first eight games on the road. The power rankings for District Three show the Barons with the most difficult schedule in District Three. “This is a confidence builder, for sure,” Brenize said. “I hope we came out stronger. We’ll see if the kids learn from it. It speaks volumes. I’m very proud of them.” FIELD HOCKEY After Central’s game against Elizabethtown got postponed until

seven shots. Senior goalie Kelli Kreider had six saves. She added to more stellar performances earlier in the week, posting two shutouts in a 9-0 rout over McCaskey on Tuesday, Sept. 18 and 3-0 against Garden Spot on Thursday, Sept. 20. Kreider now has five shutouts in 10 games and the Barons went more than 300 minutes without conceding a goal before Fleetwood scored with three minutes remaining in the first half. For the week, Central outscored its opponents 15-1. Coach Andrew Stoltzfus likes the way his team is playing right now. “Our defense is playing lights out and we’re finding goals from many different players on the field,” he said. “Against McCaskey we had eight different players score, and again (against Garden Spot) it was three different girls who got the goals.” Rachel Nolt, Summer Bates and Greiner scored in the Garden Spot victory. Against McCaskey, Maddie Carper, Copley, Nolt, Tori Fahnestock, Adair, Bates, Merrill and Corrine King posted goals. FOOTBALL After two straight nail-bitters where the Barons rallied for wins, Central finally had an easy victory. Running back Tyler Flick (103 yards rushing) led the charge, scoring two touchdowns and quarterback Evan Simon passed for 266 yards and added two scores - all in the first quarter - as the Barons improved to 5-0 on the year. Flick scored three times in the game, twice on 1-yard runs and again on a 7yard run. Colby Wagner hauled-in TD passes of 54 and 40 yards from Simon, who also connected with Ben Wagner for 65 yards. Chris Shaw added a 5-yard run to end the scoring. Defensively, the Barons held E-town to 19 yards rushing and 122 yards passing. Manheim had a balanced attack on offense, rushing for 173 yards and throwing for 266 yards. Barons’ coach Dave Hahn said a few weeks ago that the passing game needed some work. It appears his receivers and the passing offense is emerging just in time for section play. Central faces Cocalico in Denver this Friday. GOLF The Barons played Monday, Sept. 17 and finished fourth. Hannah Adair broke a 1-1 tie with a goal at the 43:00 mark. Makenna Copley gave the Barons some breathing room with a goal in the 56th minute. Copely, Elizabeth Levy and Rachel Merrill each added assists for Central, which had four corners and

Brandyn Musser will compete in the league tournament at Conestoga Country Club. Because of weather, the match slated for Tuesday, Sept. 18 was rescheduled for Thursday, Oct. 1. CROSS COUNTRY The boys edged Cocalico 27-31 and knocked off Lancaster Mennonite 26-31 on Tuesday, Sept. 18. Senior cocaptain Carson Hepner finished sixth overall with a time of 18:43. Elijah Wagner, a junior, was eighth overall at 19:41 and Michael Greenwald, a freshman, was ninth with a time of 19:58. Kole Rankin (20:25) was 11th and Isaac Martin was on Rankin’s heels with a 20:30, was two places back. Gabriel Damon added a 15th place effort at 21:44. “The boys meets were both close and our 5-8 guys really stepped up to help us win,” said head coach Ryan Kennedy. For the girls, Central outpaced Cocalico 15-55 and Lancaster Mennonite 20-35. Senior Mallory Sunderland overcame a muddy course with a big race and got the overall win, posting a time of 21:52. Olivia Stewart, a senior, was third overall (22:10), senior Marianne Fitzkee (23:50) was fourth and Isabella Reber, a freshman, ran a 24:14 for fifth. Kylie Bannister, a freshman running cross country for the first time, finished in 13th place (28:30) and is making steady improvements, Kennedy noted. “The girls have been steadily improving,” Kennedy said. “It’s just a matter of keeping everyone healthy.” TENNIS The Barons beat Cocalico and Donegal last week. Coach Kurtis Funk said the team’s doubles play continues to improve, as the squad went 6-0 in doubles during its two wins. “My number 1 and 2 players keep improving their singles play,” Funk said. “Hannah Kowalski is one. Eliana Shenk is two. Janae bright and Grace Roberts play No. 2 doubles. Olivia Good and Julia Myers play No. 3 doubles.” Kowalski, Shenk, Roberts and Janae Bright earned singles wins in a 7-0 victory against Donegal on Thursday, Sept. 20. Kowalski gained a hard-fought win against Cocalico, winning the first set 6-2, but dropped the second set 1-6 before winning 10-4 in the third set. Shenk walked away with a 6-0, 6-2 win and Roberts, after dropping the first set (1-6), rallied for 6-2 and 10-6 wins. In doubles, Kowalski and Shenk (8-6), Bright and Roberts (8-3) and Olivia Good and Julia Myers (8-6) won to put the match away.

Wednesday, Sept. 26 because of rain, a well-rested Baron squad beat Cocalico 3-0 on Wednesday, Sept. 19. Manheim got two goals from Lily Sipel and a goal from Kylie Kroesen with an assist from Jenna Lutz. “Our team is continuing to grow and learn every day,” said head coach Morgan Briggs. “We did a great job offensively as we possessed the ball the majority of the game against Cocalico but could not finish on corners. We earned 12 penalty corners but did not score on any of them. We focused a lot more on corners at practice since then and hope we will be able to convert more in our next game.” Practice makes perfect. The Barons responded with an 8-0 rout of Solanco Friday, Sept. 21. Senior Codi Bollinger found the back of the net four times and added an assist. Mattie Hartler, Lexi Hosler, Sipel and Lutz added goals. Sipel started the scoring quickly, netting the first goal just 2:05 into the game. Moments later, they added a second one at 5:58. After that, it was all Bollinger, who scored the next four goals. Central had nine corners and 22 shots in the victory. GIRLS’ SOCCER The Barons netted a 3-1 victory against Fleetwood Saturday, Sept. 22.

He noted that in Somalia, enemy combatants would use women and children as shields, sending them into the front battle lines. “They used the fact that we were decent people to their advantage,” remarked Ryan. “But it is a deep-seeded American value that

we fight with honor.” According to Ryan, the battle ended with 18 Americans dead and 78 wounded. “It was a really defining period of my life,” Ryan said. Ryan, who grew up in Lebanon, currently resides in Manheim with his wife, Gayle, and their three children. He will travel to Fort Drum, N.Y., in early October to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Battle of Mogadishu.

From there, Alpha Company headed to the site of the first helicopter crash while Charlie Company went to the second crash site. Ryan said that when they arrived they learned that all of the men had been killed, with the exception of Chief Warrant Officer Michael Durant, a pilot who had been taken hostage. “It had changed from searchand-rescue to being on the defensive,” Ryan said. Sporadic fighting continued through the night, but at daybreak Ryan’s unit headed for cover, as most operations are carried out under nightfall to help ensure safety and success. “We were fighting against an entire city, but there was just no question about it: We weren’t going to leave anyone behind,” said Ryan. “(The Battle of Mogadishu) is a real testament to the American

Ryan recalled being in the mess hall, and while the food on that deployment had been notoriously terrible, on that particular day the cooks told everyone how excited they were to have gotten pork chops to serve. The mood quickly changed when Ryan looked out a window and saw thick black smoke rising from the area of the Bakaara Market, a dangerous zone where Somali military commander and political leader Mohamed Farrah Aidid resided. Shortly afterward, the battalion commander informed them that one United States Black Hawk helicopter had crashed in the city and another had crashed about 1 mile south, leaving 99 United States military personnel trapped in the city. “I gathered the guys and said if it were you, you’d want someone to do everything they could to get you

Efforts To Preserve Land Tract Continue National Guard’s use. Coleman’s railroad line, the Cornwall Lebanon Railroad, now part of the Rails-to-Trails system, transported the soldiers to Mount Gretna, as well as their families and friends who came to visit them. On July 20, Pennsylvania Chautauqua stockholders voted to approve the purchase of the land which will benefit the Mount Gretna community in various ways: by preserving and enhancing the

historical features of this portion of Soldiers Field; providing recreational opportunities such as walking and fitness trails, bird watching, picnic areas and Railsto-Trails linkage; providing educational opportunities and programs such as tree identification, nature experiences and historical markers; and by providing periodic overflow parking for Mount Gretna’s many summer cultural activities and programs, as well as for area businesses. Today, Mount Gretna is still visited each summer

A significant opportunity was recently presented to the Pennsylvania Chautauqua in Mount Gretna. A plot of land, part of historic Soldiers Field where the Pennsylvania National Guard held its annual encampment and training between 1885 and 1935 is being offered for sale to the Pennsylvania Chautauqua. Troops trained on Soldiers Field for service in the Spanish-American War and World War I. The land, originally part of Robert H. Coleman’s holdings, was donated by him for the Pennsylvania

Efforts from pg 17 by thousands of people from throughout southcentral Pennsylvania, the U.S. and overseas. To date, the Pennsylvania Chautauqua has received nearly $850,000 in pledges from those who view the purchase of this portion of Soldiers Field as a unique and perhaps last-chance opportunity to protect and preserve this tract of land.
