Bringing generations together

There’s something special about intergenerational relationships, and their benefits can be seen firsthand in Manheim. For the third year, Pleasant View Communities has welcomed students who are part of the OneLife program to campus. The unique partnership has brought out the best in both the young adults and the seniors.

“As seniors age, there’s a perceived loss of value,” said Pleasant View chief executive officer Jonathan Hollinger. “They still have so much to give and offer in their wisdom. At the same time, young men and women who have just graduated from high school are also in a season of change and experiencing a little bit of loss as well. These two generations need intentionality and space to be heard.”

Serving up success on the court

In 1903, the Manheim Tennis Club became an official organization, offering a place for people who loved the sport to come together for camaraderie and competition. After 120 years in operation, the club featured its first women’s United States Tennis Association (USTA)

team this year, and the team proved it was worth the wait.

The team won the Central Penn Division Championship at the Hempfield recCenter in August and competed in sectionals near Princeton, N.J., earlier this month. Although they didn’t take home a trophy there, the players were happy with their first year in See Success pg 2

more. There are four locations of OneLife throughout the country - in Morris, Pa.; West Virginia; South Carolina; and Manheim. More than 100 students are currently in the program with 27 enrolled at the Pleasant View campus.

“Our learning environment is primarily in the laboratory setting, not in the lecture hall,” Beers explained. At Pleasant View, students can explore career paths including senior living, facility management, health care, hospitality, ministry and

OneLife began at Pleasant View in 2021. “We faced some initial skepticism,” Beers recalled, noting that the ongoing pandemic caused some people to question the program as well as the fact that an intergenerational program hadn’t been done before through OneLife. “Over the past few years, the intended purpose behind the intergenerational relationship has come to fruition, and we’ve seen great engagement from the residents of Pleasant View and our students.”

Heather Lindsey, artist and owner of Creative Inspirationz Gallery in Manheim, loves to showcase local art. She regularly hosts exhibits at her gallery, 23 N. Main St., Manheim, and her next exhibit will spotlight the season of fall.

“Sunflowers and Colors of Fall” will open with a reception on Friday, Sept. 29, from 7 to 9 p.m. Light refreshments and wine sampling will be available, and artists will be on-site to share their work.

“This is an amazing collection from local artists featuring multi medium, watercolor, acrylic and

PowerPoint graphics,” Lindsey said. Featured artists will include Sheila Brownell, Katrina Hostetter, Leslie McCarthy, Kim Newcomer, Caety Porter, Mollie Shaffer, Trudie Stine, Marion Weachter, Claudia Watt, Jan Wynkoop and Sarah Zeigler. Lindsey will display her art in the show as well.

Lindsey regularly hosts art shows at her gallery as a way to give local artists exposure and also to provide affordable, quality art for people to purchase. She has held exhibits in the past with themes including “Interpretation of Time” and “Cardinals.”

the competition, said Denny Keller, secretary/treasurer of the club.

“As the club was marking its 120th anniversary, one of the ladies decided to put together a USTA team for the first time,” he recalled. “Getting to advance to sectionals was a really big accomplishment. The competition at that level is tough.”

The Manheim team included 17 women, all age 40 and older. Thirteen players traveled to sectionals, where they competed against teams from Philadelphia and Pittsburgh as well as Delaware and New Jersey.

Club member Rene Battista initially came up with the idea to form a USTA women’s team, and Nancy Hanula helped to recruit members.

“Most of the ladies didn’t know each other before this, and most had never met before they started practicing together,” Hanula shared. That added a bit of a challenge to the sport, especially when the women played doubles, where knowing your partner well is a plus.

Although the Manheim Tennis Club is officially 120 years old, its roots date back to 1899 when it was a men’sonly club. Its current location, at 350 Memorial Drive, next

to the Manheim Central football stadium, has been in use since 1923.

The club accepts members of all ages and ability levels, with discounted membership for anyone in school, including college students, and the organization is always looking for new members.

“It’s a nice, small club, with good competition,” said Keller of the club, which has 92 members, 22 of whom are women. “We’ve had a lot of men’s teams over the years go to nationals.” Members range in age from 16 to 95, although the oldest active member is 82, Keller commented.

The club operates almost year-round, stopping only once the winter weather prohibits playing on the courts that are made with Har-Tru, a crushed stone. “We usually start up in mid-April and run until December, but we have played as late as Jan. 2,” said Keller, who also handles ground maintenance for the club. Games are held on the courts five or six days a week, and the club also hosts various tournaments.

“The great thing about this club is you can play as much as you want for one fee,” Hanula remarked, adding that the women’s team has a goal of

competing in sectionals again next year. “It’s also a nice social opportunity to meet people and to get out and stay active.”

Keller encourages anyone who is interested to check out the club. “It’s free to come out and see if you like it,” he said.

“Try out our courts and see what you think. You can still join this year, or you’re welcome to wait until the spring and look to join us then.”

Junior Air Rifle program seeks participants

If you’re between the ages of 8 and 18 and you’re looking for a fun but challenging sport, check out the Junior Air Rifle program. A new session of classes will run on Saturdays from Oct. 14 through Dec. 16 at the Mount Joy Sportsmen’s Association, 85 Range Road. The program will begin at 9 a.m., with the potential for separate sessions from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. to noon, depending on the turnout, said instructor Tom Amlie.

The club provides .177 caliber target-grade air rifles to participants, although youths may bring their own air rifles, provided they have iron sights. Air rifles, Amlie explained, shoot projectiles by compressed air. “People should be aware that the club rifles are likely to be more appropriate for target shooting,” he said. “Air rifles are quiet, but if a participant is especially sensitive to noise, they’re encouraged to bring some sort of ear protection.” Participants are required to use eye protection.

The program introduces youths to the sport while helping experienced shooters hone their skills. “First and foremost, we cover firearms safety,” Amlie remarked. “Even though these aren’t firearms in the strict sense of the word, they’re still potentially dangerous if mishandled, and the basic safety rules are the same and strictly enforced.”

Participants will learn the fundamentals of rifle marksmanship, with smaller kids shooting from supported positions on sandbags and older kids encouraged to shoot using a sling.

“It’s not meant to be a competitive program, except to

the extent that people compete against themselves, trying to improve from week to week,” Amlie shared. “Air rifles are very quiet and have little to no recoil, so this is a great low-stress, well-supervised way to introduce kids to firearms safety and marksmanship.”

Amlie noted that although the program begins on Oct. 14, participants are welcome to start at any time. “If someone wants to start after the 14th, they’re asked to come 30 to 45 minutes early that first time so that we can go through the safety orientation before everyone else arrives,” he said.

He hopes anyone who is interested will try out the sport. “I always encourage people to participate in the shooting sports by noting that it’s a year-round activity which is fun for people from ages 8 through 80,” he commented. “Physical strength and size are not as important as they are in other sports, and boys and girls participate shoulder to shoulder. In fact, the young

ladies often have a better aptitude for this than the young men.”

The Junior Air Rifle program also sets people up for success outside of the range, he said. “The shooting sports really do require participants to learn to focus very attentively on the task at hand,” he explained. “Developing and practicing that ability is helpful in other areas of life, like school.”

There is a small fee to participate in the Junior Air Rifle program. For more information or to register, contact Amlie at 717342-4484 or tta2@psu.edu.
