Salem UMC To Host Annual Giveaway By Chelsea Peifer
On Wednesday, Oct. 17, Salem United Methodist Church (UMC), 140 N. Penn St., Manheim, will spread love by hosting a giveaway of shoes, coats, hats, and children’s books from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Anyone in the community is welcome to browse the selection and take what they need. Shoes and coats will be available in a variety of sizes for infants through adults. Karen Potter, who organizes the event along with the members of the church’s Wrestling With Grace Sunday school class and the Salem Family Ministries committee, said that this will be the third year for the giveaway. Potter came up with the idea while going through a book study at church. “It was about doing something for others, so I thought, ‘Well, what can I do?’” recalled Potter. Serving at the Manheim
Central Food Pantry made Potter keenly aware of - and eager to help meet - the existing and growing needs of local residents. In its first year, the event featured only shoes and was coined Salem Shoes for the Soul. After that event was met with such success, organizers decided to expand and offer coats, hats, and children’s books for the event’s second year. Hats available at the giveaway are created by members of the Knit Wits, a knitting ministry that meets at the church on a monthly basis to knit, crochet, and loom items to distribute to folks in need. Donations of new and gently used shoes, coats, and children’s books for the giveaway are welcome and may be dropped off at Salem UMC on Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Financial donations to purchase new items to help those in need are also accepted.
Members of Salem United Methodist Church in Manheim, including (from left) pastor John Laughlin, Mary Wubbolt, Karen Potter, and Barbara Kolb, invite the community to a giveaway of shoes, hats, coats, and children’s books on Oct. 17. The giveaway is being hosted in conjunction with Wednesday Night Supper,

For the 2018-19 school year, Manheim Christian Day School (MCDS) initiated a new structure that incorporates fifth grade into its middle school program. Each grade level has a home-base classroom. During the day, students rotate to their different core subjects, each taught by a dedicated teacher with expertise in that subject. Teachers for math, social studies, science, and language arts teach their subject for students in fifth through eighth grades, providing consistency in the learning experience. Each teacher also has the benefit of tracking a student’s progress as they mature throughout middle school. Another feature of the newly restructured middle school program is a designated science lab. Funds raised at the school’s spring benefit auction helped to renovate an existing classroom into this science lab, and teacher Rodney Zimmerman was hired to teach science curricula to students in fifth through eighth grades. Zimmerman is making use of this new space and materials to tangibly demonstrate the principles covered in his lessons. During one recent lab, the sixthgrade class participated in a gummy bear experiment to hypothesize and then observe the outcomes of placing gummy bear candies in different liquids. In addition to the four core subjects, students in the middle school program take part in regular Bible instruction, physical and health education, computer instruction and elective options. Students in seventh and eighth grades also have the opportunity to participate in a Lead Now program that develops their leadership potential and provides mentoring experiences with students throughout the school. MCDS is a Christian-based school for students in prekindergarten through eighth grade and families in the Manheim area and surrounding communities. The school has a low teacher-tostudent ratio in order to provide individualized learning. Enrollment is available to students of varied cultural, racial, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. MCDS is located at 686 Lebanon Road, Manheim. For more information, readers may call 717-665-4300 or visit www.manheimchristian.org.

tossed salad with dressing, and rolls with butter. Assorted desserts and beverages will also be available. Following the meal, a brief program will take place. MHNRC director of advancement Kris Wilson noted that the mission and vision of MHNRC will be shared, and attendees will also hear personal stories of how the MHNRC has touched people’s lives. “I love the stories,” Wilson remarked. “You realize through hearing those stories how unique Mount Hope really is.” Nestled along back roads and rolling farmland at 3026 Mount Hope Home Road, Manheim, MHNRC is a 110-bed skilled nursing facility that strives to provide excellent, affordable care to the low-income and disabled elderly population in need of services. According to Wilson, MHNRC gave more than $1.24 million in charitable care in 2017 - a feat made possible by the great amount of support from the local community. This year, MHNRC was named a five-star, deficiency-free facility by the Pennsylvania Department of Health. Wilson noted that for the most part, the retirement community is supported financially by Medicaid, but due to
cuts in funding, additional finances are needed to assist with maintaining and repairing the aging building. At the end of the summer, the underground water tank that houses thousands of gallons of water for the building’s sprinkler system needed to be repaired. Wilson said the project cost upward of $30,000, and proceeds from the benefit dinner will help to cover those costs as well as upcoming roof repairs. To reserve individual seating or a table for six or eight people, interested individuals may contact Wilson at 717-682-8026 or advancement@mthopenazar ene.org. The deadline to make reservations is Saturday, Oct. 13. In September, MHNRC hosted a Harvest Festival, pig roast, and benefit auction that raised $16,000. “I’d like to extend such a heartfelt thank you to the community,” Wilson said. “We had people and businesses who gave gifts and money and helped to make it all possible. We are just blessed to have all of those businesses and people partnering with the mission of Mount Hope.” To learn more about MHNRC, readers may visit http://mthope nazarene.org.

Barons Prevail 1-0 Over Pioneers in OT By Eric G. Stark
Morgan Briggs called it the best game her team has played all season. It came during the Barons’ 1-0 field hockey victory in overtime against Lampeter-Strasburg on Wednesday, Oct. 3. Briggs, Manheim Central’s head coach, said Lexi Hosler, Codi Bollinger, Jenna Lutz and Alissa Brubaker did a fantastic job in the midfield controlling L-S’s attack and regaining possession. “We had a few defensive break-
downs and caused some defensive corners, but our defense played strong and weathered their attack,” Briggs said. “This was our first overtime game this season, and thankfully Bollinger was able to put it away on a corner in the first few minutes.” On that winning goal, Brigg said Bollinger received the ball cleanly on her stick at the top of the circle and shot a rocket into the corner of the cage. Lily Sipel earned the assist in a game where L-S had more corners and shots (13-10) compared to the
Barons (4-4). Central Goalie Mikayla Regan collected 10 saves. Central started its week with a 4-1 win against McCaskey on Monday, Oct. 1. The Barons did all of their scoring in the first half, gaining two goals from Bollinger, as well as a goal from Mattie Hartzler and Sipel. Central had eight corners and 10 shots. The Barons cruised to a 3-0 shutout against Elizabethtown on Friday, Oct. 5.Sipel scored twice for Central, which took a 2-0 lead into halftime and never looked back. Hosler added a goal for the Barons,
who had 19 corners and an incredible 35 shots on goal. Defensively, Central held E-town to two shots and two corners. Regan had two saves. BOYS’ SOCCER The headline from Tuesday’s boys’ soccer game: The Barons win in a flash. Flashes of lightning caused Central’s game with Ephrata to halt early, but not before Zach Reed found the back of the net and Manheim secured what turned out to be the winning goal in a 1-0 victory against the Mountaineers on October 2. Hunter Hess took space along the
left wing and gained the end line. He crossed the ball to Mavrick King who sealed off the goalie with position and flicked the ball on to Reed, who passed the ball into the back of the net. “It was a beautiful sequence,” Barons coach Rod Brenize said. “I was really proud of the way the guys worked together to earn the goal.” The win keeps the Barons in first place in Section Two of the LancasterLebanon League. Brenize said the key to win was playing as a team and taking advantage of what Ephrata gave them. The majority of the match was played in Ephrata’s end. In this case, Brenize said, Ephrata was playing a high line, so the Barons played big balls over the top to get behind the Mounts’ defense. He said the entire team played well, but singled out Hess, Reed and King for how well they worked on top, executing the offense. He said Zach Steffy, Carson Brenize and Brett Kreider held down the midfield. Niko Gavala, Tyler Snyder, Sam Tobias, Mason Nissley and Andrew Echegoyen played lockdown defense, holding the Mounts to three shots in
the game. The Barons stayed hot when they played McCaskey on Thursday, Oct. 4, posting a 4-0 shutout, scoring three times in the first half on goals by Hess, King and Reed. Kreider found the back of the net in the second half. Central had seven corners and eight shots. Nissley collected four saves. Central capped its week with a 2-1 victory over Oley Valley Saturday, Oct. 6. After a 1-1 tie at halftime, King notched the equalizer at the 43:00 mark to win the game. Carson Brenize got Central’s scoring started, finding the back of the net 27 minutes into the game. GIRLS’ SOCCER The Barons secured a huge 3-1 victory against Ephrata on Tuesday, Oct. 2. To put how big a win this was into perspective, it was Ephrata’s first loss of the season. It had actually been 29 straight regular season games since the Mountaineers last loss. Tied 1-1 at halftime, Central scored twice in the second half to notch the win. Elizabeth Levy scored twice within a minute in second half at the 65th and 66th minutes, respectively. Erin Greiner got the scoring started (37:00)

Running back Tyler Flick continues to be a workhorse for the Barons, rushing 17 times for 85 yards and finding the end zone twice on runs of three and five yards, respectively. Niko Gavala, drilled a 34-yard field goal. In a battle for first place in Section Two, Central (3-0 section record) travels to Conestoga Valley (2-1), which suffered its first section loss last week. GOLF Brandyn Musser shot 95 at the District Three golf tournament at Briarwood East Golf Course. Barons’ coach Charlie Fisher said Musser had a decent start to the round then ran into some trouble holes. “He said he hit the ball well, but the couple bad holes hurt,” Fisher said. “I’m very proud of Brandyn and all he accomplished during his high school career, which includes two trips to districts, is phenomenal.” CROSS COUNTRY Both the boys and girls secured two nice wins last week. The girls beat Northern Lebanon 15-55 and Octorara 27-28 on Tuesday, Oct. 2. Olivia Sunderland ran another excellent race finishing first overall with a time of 20:02, which was a personal record. Mallory Sunderland was third overall, posting a time of 21:03. Central coach Ryan Kennedy said the top five girls ran well overall to hold off Octorara, who “gave us a good race.” Marianne Fitzkee was sixth overall, running a 21:56, followed by teammates Isabella Reber, seventh (22:26); Erin Hoffman, 10th (23:38); Emma Johnston, 12th (25:15); Kylie Bannister, 13th (26:22); Emma Levitan, 14th (26:52) and Oliva Stewart, 15th (28:00). On the boy’s side, Central beat Northern Lebanon 26-32 and Octorara 17-48. Carson Hepner was Manheim’s top performer finishing third with a time of 17:40. Michael Greenwald, the Barons’ number four runner had a notable performance, outkicking a NL runner at the line. Other notable finishes included Elijah Wagner placing fourth overall in 18:04. Isaac Martin placed fifth (18:23), followed by Greenwald, seventh (18:51); Kole Rankin, ninth (19:22) and Joshua Varner 13th (20:00). Central coach Kurtis Funk noted that his No. 1 Lampeter-Strasburg last Friday. for the Barons on a breakaway with less than 2:30 to go in the half. “We had heavy pressure in the first 10-15 minutes with a few shots just missing the goal, hitting the post, and the keeper making a great save,” head coach Andrew Stoltzfus said. Central’s pressure continued into the second half with the Barons getting the majority of the chances. Levy cut inside from the left and hit a curling rightfooted shot from about 25 yards out that the keeper didn’t stand a chance. Less than a minute later Central got a free kick near the sideline. Makenna Copley crossed it in and Levy headed it home for her second goal. Maddie Carper had the first assist and Copley the other two. Stoltzfus noted that getting the two-goal win gives the Barons the tie breaker if both teams finish with one loss in Section Two. The Barons rode the momentum of the big win into their next game on Thursday, Oct. 4, blitzing McCaskey 10-0 with all 10 goals coming in

The Marine Corps League of Lancaster County Detachment 294 and Auxiliary of Lancaster County will present the second annual Semper Fi 5K Run/Walk and Kids’ Chesty’s Challenge Fun Race on Saturday, Nov. 10. Runners and walkers of all ages are invited to participate in the race, which will step off promptly at 8 a.m. from Columbia High School (CHS), 901 Ironville Pike, Columbia. Race day check-in and registration will open at 6:30 a.m. Interested individuals may register at www.pretzelcitysports.com/ online-registration through Wednesday, Nov. 7. The deadline to register at a discounted rate and be guaranteed a race T-shirt is Monday, Oct. 15. Beyond that date, T-shirts will be available to registrants while supplies last. Participants will follow a route down Ironville Pike and through Columbia Borough streets to the finish line at Locust and Bank streets. Organizers describe the point-to-point course as a very fast, downhill route. Distance mile markers will be provided at every halfmile, and a water and aid station will be set up at the halfway point. Post-race festivities, as well as the Kids’ Chesty’s Challenge Fun Race, will take place at the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia, located near the 5K finish line. A disc jockey will play music, and free snacks and beverages will be available to participants. A shuttle bus service will be available at Columbia Crossing to transport runners back to CHS for their vehicles after the race. Organizers will also offer a free baggage claim service so participants may check a bag or clothing item before the race that they would like to have waiting for them at the finish line. Children ages 3 to 12 may take part in the quarter-mile Chesty’s Challenge Fun Race, named after
the Marine Corps’ bulldog mascot. Race-day registration will open at 7:30 a.m. at Columbia Crossing, and the run will take off at 9 a.m. Those who register online by Oct. 15 will receive a T-shirt, medal, and goodie bag. Youths who register on race day will receive a medal, and T-shirts will be available while supplies last. An awards ceremony, including time to honor and recognize veterans for their service and sacrifice, will begin at approximately 9 a.m. at Columbia Crossing. Cash prizes will be given to the overall male and female winners, as well as to the first-place masters male and female finishers (age 50 and up). The top three finishers in various five-year age range categories will receive awards, too. Proceeds from the event will support outreach programs for veterans in the greater Lancaster County area. Mike Mastriania, commandant for the Marine Corps League of Lancaster County Detachment 294, noted that the organization offers assistance to homeless veterans of Lancaster County who have served in any branch of the military. For example, the group recently helped a Gulf War veteran and his family to secure an apartment and purchase furniture. The Marine Corps League also works with organizations such as Transitional Living Center (TLC) Lancaster and United Veterans Beacon House. Marine Corps League members provide a meal and bingo event once a month for veterans at the Lebanon Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center, along with collecting clothes, books, and suitcases for individuals at both the Coatesville and Lebanon VA medical centers. For more information on the Semper Fi 5K and Kids Chesty’s Challenge Fun Race, readers may contact lancastercounty mcldet294@gmail.com or visit www.facebook.com/SemperFi5K ColumbiaPA.

Tulip, therapy dog and official greeter to everyone arriving at a local therapeutic riding program, is currently facing her own physical challenges. Capital Area Therapeutic Riding Association (CATRA) in Grantville has been home to Tulip for nearly nine years. CATRA offers therapeutic riding for special needs children, adolescents and adults. Tulip is not only CATRA’s official greeter, she is also an integral part of the stable’s Paws-N-Read program, which offers young readers the comfort of an unbiased listener as they read aloud. In late May, Tulip, a tri-color Pembroke Welsh Corgi, suffered a fractured pelvis and displaced right leg when trapped beneath the wheels of a vehicle at the stable. Dr. Marcus Bradbury of Hope Veterinary Specialists in Malvern reattached Tulip’s right leg to her pelvis with two pins the day after her accident. Dr. Kathryn Poteet, of Animal Health Care Center of Hershey, managed Tulip’s recovery through the summer, and Tulip recently began a rehabilitation

Break Barriers By Ann Mead Ash
Tracey Strohecker, Annie Friedrichs, and other members of the Lancaster Christian Women’s Club first heard of a Stonecroft Ministries event called Story Marks two years ago, and the women were intrigued. “Story Marks (is about) women and the stories behind their tattoos,” explained Strohecker. “It will be a one-night gallery experience featuring photographs of local women and the stories of their hearts.” On Thursday, Oct. 18, area women are invited to the Barn at Overlook Commons, 605 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. to view the photos of up to 30 local women and to hear the testimonies of up to 10 women and how their tattoos are an expression of their Christian journeys. Light fare will be served. The photographs that will be displayed were taken by photographer Sally Krueger, who donated the photo sessions to the event and who will gift them to those
who volunteered to be photographed. Friedrichs said that at the heart of the event is a passion to reach young women who do not know Jesus. “This is about meeting a girl where she is and as she is with support and encouragement,” said Friedrichs. For Strohecker, the 24 months since she first heard of Story Marks has represented a personal journey that highlights a significant change in her outlook. When she first heard of Story Marks, she was skeptical of the idea. “The Lord began to work in my heart about being judgmental,” said Strohecker, who said that a sermon her pastor preached in the fall of 2017 on the subject of prejudices also affected her. “The Lord really spoke to me,” said Strohecker, who remembered Story Marks at that time. “I felt so convicted and passionate about this,” she added, noting that during a February vacation to Florida she decided to get a tattoo of two intertwining hearts and the words “Endless
Love” to honor her marriage of more than 50 years. The transformation of Strohecker’s viewpoint has given her greater understanding for the reasons many women have tattoos. “I always thought it was about rebellion,” said Strohecker. “That was my perception. Once I understood there is a story behind them, I could see there’s a significant meaning.” One goal of the event is to convey the message that tattoos are more than skin deep. “When you put something permanently on your body, it’s not on your body, it’s on your heart,” said Friedrichs. “It’s tattooed on to who you are.” Another aim is to break down stereotypes and focus on the universal. “We want to literally share our stories to support and encourage one another,” explained Friedrichs. “We are coming together as sisters to share the love of Christ with a sense of community.” She hopes to change perceptions in the process. “This is about women loving and needing each

Mad About Mah Jongg
Women who participated in an introductory session on mah jongg in preparation for the second annual Mah Jongg Madness event set for Oct. 21 included (from left) Carol Woodman, Pam Barnard, Natalie Freedman, Audrey Reedy, and Marie Donnelly.
PUBLIC AUCTION
from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Four Seasons Golf Club, 949 Church St., Landisville. Freedman has been hosting information sessions at her home in East Hempfield Township in order to help newcomers to the game prepare for the second annual event. At a recent session, Carol Woodman coached Barnard and other women through the intricate setup and play of the game. “I’m a total addict,” Woodman admitted as she sorted tiles. “It’s never the same (game) twice, and it’s social. Like today, I get to meet all these new people.” Woodman learned to play mah jongg as a younger person, and she now uses her grandmother’s vintage set from the 1920s or ’30s. The game relies on a combination of luck and skill, and people of all skill levels are welcome at Mah Jongg Madness. There really is no age limit for playing the game, although literacy skills are important, as each year, an official list of tile combinations is published. The list for 2018 will be used at the Oct. 21 event.
Mah Jongg Madness will not be a tournament; rather, folks may play at their leisure, and there will be veteran players available to provide assistance as needed. A cost has been set for participation, and a catered lunch will be included in the fee. There will also be opportunities to win prize drawings. Proceeds from Mah Jongg Madness will benefit the scholarship fund for the Edward Freedman Congregational Retreat. On alternating years, the members of Congregation Shaarai Shomayim spend a weekend away at a Maryland retreat center for fellowship, education, and celebration. The next retreat will be held in 2019, and the scholarship fund will help to ensure that everyone interested may attend the retreat, regardless of their finances. Registration for Mah Jongg Madness is required by Monday, Oct. 15. Folks may visit https://goo.gl/Fik7sn to register or make a donation, or they may contact Freedman at natjl@aol.com or 717-618-8054.

Pam Barnard collected a yellow tile printed with a Chinese character, looked at the row of similar tiles in front of her, consulted a sheet of paper at her side to see if she had any worthwhile combinations, and set it down in the discard area.
“It’s quite challenging,” Barnard said of the game of mah jongg. “It requires a lot of focus. But I’m up for the challenge; it’s intriguing.” Barnard learned to play mah jongg at the home of Natalie Freedman, an aficionado of the rummy-like game and organizer of Mah Jongg Madness, a fundraising event set for Sunday, Oct. 21,
