In Matthew 25:35, Jesus said, “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat.” The members of Salem United Methodist Church in Manheim are taking those words to heart. Salem Family Ministries has installed a Blessing Box full of nonperishable food that’s free for the community. The box is located by
the church sign at 140 N. Penn St.
Over the summer, church member Jim Stouch was on a trip with a group of church members through Appalachia Service Project when he noticed a Blessing Box. “He texted me and said, ‘Let’s think about doing this,’” recalled Lisa Palmquist, chair of Salem Family Ministries. “The next day, I went out and bought the box.”

encourage people to come into our church, check out us, share a meal and have some fellowship,” said Gail Ruhl, describing the annual chicken potpie dinner at Ruhl’s Church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim. The event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 22, and this year, it will feature “A Night With Noah” after the dinner.
The meal will be available for sitdown service or to go from 4 to 6 p.m. or until sold out, Ruhl said. The menu will include chicken potpie, green beans, coleslaw, applesauce, homemade desserts and assorted beverages. There are separate prices for adults and for children. Children age 5 and under may eat for free.
Proceeds from the dinner will be used to support upcoming mission trips. Although the destination of next summer’s trip is not finalized yet, Ruhl noted that the church has a long history of supporting projects around the world. “All proceeds will be used for mission work locally, nationally or globally,” she said.
This is the first time the church is combining the dinner with an event afterward. “We haven’t done a dual event like this before, but we’re hoping families and individuals will stick around for Noah’s ark,” she stated.
It’s going to be a good, wholesome family event with a lot of things to do.
“A Night With Noah” will feature activities in multiple locations throughout the church, all based on the story of Noah’s ark from the book of Genesis. “It’s going to start off with a short, animated video about Noah’s ark,” said John Renninger, who is the event coordinator. “Then, we’ll go into who Noah was as a person, talk about his family and so on.” Additional stations will include the opportunity to measure the distance of the ark’s length and width, play games and hear Bible verses related to the story of Noah.
“I have somebody who is going to be Noah, and then I have someone who will be speaking as the voice of God,” Renninger noted, adding that a backdrop of Noah’s ark will also be set up, along with animal face masks as a photo station.
Attendees are encouraged to bring a stuffed animal along for the event, and Renninger noted that the activities are geared for people of all ages. “Any child through grade school and middle school can do these activities and enjoy them,” he remarked. “Older kids can help some of the younger children. It’s going to be a good, wholesome family event with a lot of things to do. It’s a way to get the whole family involved.”
“A Night With Noah” will run from 6 to 7:30 p.m., and Renninger recommends arriving in time to start at 6 as all attendees will progress in one group through each station. “If you want to see the whole story of Noah, come at the beginning,” he said.
For more information on the potpie dinner or “A Night With Noah,” visit https://ruhlschurch.org or call the church at 717-665-3400.

“I am super excited,” said Michelle Gibbs, program director with House of His Creation (HOHC), as she headed down to the basement of the house at 301 N. Broad St., Lititz. “All of this is new.” The new area includes a Cricut Creation Station Gibbs has set up to teach the mothers who live at HOHC how to make personalized items and a boutique for the mothers to shop in.

Gibbs has used the Cricut machines to create T-shirts, mugs, jewelry, and purses with the HOHC logo on them. “Who doesn’t love personalized items?” asked Gibbs. “My goal is to help the women learn some entrepreneurship skills because we know that as
a single mom, it takes a lot (to support yourself and your baby),” she explained. “You need to be able to generate extra income and still be mom to your children.” Gibbs said creating the station has been on her heart for a while. In addition to the Cricut station,
Gibbs has stocked the area with arts and crafts items.
“Some of the women like to draw or sew,” she noted. “We want to be able to offer them something they can do to make some extra money during those first months (when) you want to be there with your child.”
Adjacent to the Cricut station is the small boutique. “(Women at HOHC) can earn points to purchase things for their children and themselves,” said Gibbs. Points can be earned by attending certain classes, preparing a meal, or cleaning office space. Gibbs has lined the shelves of the boutique with baby items such as diapers, wipes, shampoo, baby clothes, and stuffed animals. A few larger items, including strollers, playpens, and a highchair, are also available. Other items in the boutique include backpacks, school supplies, and journals, and Gibbs has stocked pots, pans, and cookbooks for program graduates who are ready to leave HOHC.
Changes at HOHC, which provides housing and other support to pregnant women age 18 and over, have been
occurring in the last several months. Matthew Neff, director of HOHC, and his wife, Callie, program director with HOHC South, recently relocated to Florida, where they opened 685, a refuge for girls who have been rescued from human trafficking.
In Lititz, Gibbs said, the house is prepared to accommodate up to four women at a time. New house parents Bill and Trish Sclafani are settled on the third floor. “We are excited to open these doors again,” said Gibbs, who said that women should primarily be in their first or second trimester of pregnancy and that they may remain at the house for six months after delivery. Gibbs works with a number of outside agencies to bring together all the components a woman needs during her pregnancy and after, including A Woman’s Concern and the Nurse-Family Partnership. Gibbs has also instituted the Stepping Up House of His Creation Aftercare program for women who choose to continue to receive services after leaving HOHC.

State
The Borough of Manheim and the Manheim Veterans Memorial Committee (MVMC) have announced that the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has awarded a $150,000 grant for construction of the planned veterans’ memorial plaza in Manheim Veterans Memorial Park. The MVMC assisted with the submission of the grant application and is providing the matching funding required by the state.
The memorial will honor residents of Manheim as well as Penn and Rapho townships who served in the military during peace or war. It will include flagpoles for the Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and Space Force standards along with the Merchant Marines of World War II. The plaza will also consolidate the various memorials already around town to provide an easily accessible site where people can reflect on the service of all veterans.
The MVMC officially
began its capital campaign on July 4, 2021, with a goal of raising $300,000. It is collaborating with Manheim’s American Legion Post 419 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5956 and auxiliary to raise funds for the memorial. All proceeds raised will go to the memorial and operating expenses.
Donations are still being accepted and Manheim-area residents are encouraged to
join the Brick Brigade by purchasing a memorial brick, which will be placed in the plaza’s Path of Honor. Any funds raised beyond the final construction costs will be used to establish an endowment for the memorial’s ongoing maintenance.
George Schwartz, chairman of the committee and a retired U.S. Army brigadier general, said a groundbreaking is planned for next year.
The MVMC is composed
of unpaid volunteers and is an unincorporated, 501(c)(3) nonprofit group registered with the state as a charitable organization.
The MVMC’s motto is “Honor Their Service.” For more information about the committee and its efforts to honor the service of Manheim-area residents, search for “Manheim Veterans Memorial” on Facebook or visit https://manheimveter ansmemorial.org/.

Blessings
Church member Doug Winters helped to construct a frame for the box, which is a large bathroom cabinet, and built an overhang to protect it from rain and snow. The box was installed at the end of August. Palmquist checks the box on Sundays and Wednesdays, restocking as needed.
The idea for the box is to provide food for a family to make a meal, she noted, adding that people have donated items such as spaghetti and sauce, familysize boxes of macaroni and cheese and Tuna Helper plus a can of tuna. “We’re looking for nonperishable dinner items,” she said.
The church members are familiar with the need for access to free food in Manheim. The Manheim Central Food Pantry moved to the former church parsonage in 2012. “The Blessing Box is a way for us to reach out to the community and serve
their needs when the food bank is not available,” Palmquist noted.
The Blessing Box is just one of several initiatives of Salem Family Ministries. The group holds a school supply collection, organizes a fall coat drive, provides clothing for nurses to distribute in the Manheim Central School District and more.
Palmquist noted that while church members have been contributing to the box, she has also noticed donations from community members. “That was a nice surprise,” she stated.
Donations may be placed in the box or dropped off in a bin labeled “Blessing Box” in the church’s Welcome Center.
“We have a sign on the Blessing Box that says, ‘Take what you need, leave what you can,’” Palmquist remarked. “We just want to bless our community.”

Lady Booters Back on Track, Top Octorara
BY ERIC PYLES
The girls’ soccer team was able to bust up their three-game slide with a 4-0 win over Octorara on October 1st. The Lady Barons used first half goals from Kyla Benner, Lizzie Voegele and Abbie Reed to open a comfy halftime lead. Julia Hess tacked on a final goal in the 70th minute and Lexi Wettig posted the clean sheet with zero saves.
Prior to Octorara, the Lady Barons suffered a 4-1 loss to Elizabethtown, their third straight, on the 29th. Reed used a Voegele pass to pick up Manheim’s lone score.
Ephrata handed Manheim a 2-0 loss on October 3rd. Wettig posted
a second half shutout and finished with 10 saves but two first half goals were too much to overcome.
FOOTBALL
It was over almost before it started, or at least that is how the football team’s 70-0 blowout win over Muhlenberg felt. Afterall, Central was up 35-0 after eight minutes and 55-0 at the break, meaning the second half started with a running clock, leading to just 15 second half points and the 70-0 final.
It was offense galore for the Barons as they racked up 440 yards of offense led by Zac Hahn. The junior signal caller was an efficient 11-for-14 for 250 yards and four
touchdowns passes. He split those TD passes to Bode Sipel, Aaron Enterline and Rocco Daugherty while Sonny Callahan and Luke Miller chipped in with three catches and 37 yards combined. Sipel topped the receiver chart with 103 yards and a score on four catches while Enterline finished with two TD catches and 86 yards on three receptions. Daugherty had two catches for 35 yards and one score. Brycen Armold rounded out the attack, totaling 112 yards with scores of 43, six, one and 45-yards on seven carries.
GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL
The girls’ volleyball team enjoyed wins over Garden Spot and Cocalico but suffered matching losses to Elizabethtown and Lampeter-Strasburg. That leaves the Lady Barons outside the L-L postseason field despite their 6-4 mark in L-L play. Their 10-5 overall mark has them inside the District 3-3A field with a few games remaining in the regular season.
Central topped Garden Spot by a 3-0 count on September 28th, posting wins of 25-12, 25-15 and 25-18. Addy Doerschuk finished with 17 assists. Maddie Knier added nine kills to go with her six blocks. Kaylee Dougherty added four digs and Audrey Dippel two aces.
Manheim stumbled against the Lady Bears, falling by scores of 2519, 25-16 and 25-19 on the 29th. Central countered that 3-0 loss with a 3-0 win over Cocalico on October 4th.
In between was a 3-1 loss to Lampeter-Strasburg on October 3rd. Manheim Central dropped game one 25-17 but rebounded to tie the match up with a 25-21 game
two win. It was all Lampeter-Strasburg from there with wins of 25-22 and 25-19 sealing the 3-1 final. Doerschuk finished with 25 assists and Knier 13 kills and one block. Dougherty had five digs and four aces.
BOYS’ SOCCER
The boys’ soccer team continues to find the going tough with losses to Elizabethtown and Ephrata dropping the Barons to 2-8-1 overall and 1-7-0 in league play. Dylan Smith manned the cage for Central, tallying 11 saves in the two games. Colin Rohrer, with help from Gabe Redcay, netted the Barons lone goal in the 5-1 E-town loss with the Manheim attack unable to break through against the Mountaineers.
CROSS COUNTRY
The Baron cross-country teams made one final regular season journey, joining Elizabethtown for a showdown in Quarryville on October 4th. Central managed one top 10 runner, Julie Lindberg, who finished 10th with a time of 23:55. Reagan Ibach (11th - 23:57) and Jenn Moffett (12th - 24:33) were top 15 finishers.
Carter Bruckhart led the boys, posting the 15th best time, 20:24, while Carson Brooks claimed 16th with a time of 20:42.
TENNIS
The tennis team saw the team half of their season end on September 30th with a 3-1 loss to Lancaster Country Day in the semifinals of the L-L Team Tournament.
“I knew it would be a tall task to overcome,” said head coach Kurtis Funk. “I was so proud of the team that we competed like we did. The fact that we were even in the match says a lot about how good we played
and how well our season went.”
The Lady Barons picked up their lone team point in doubles play with Brooke Kettler and Ava Groff, who stepped in for Lauren Huber who missed the match to pick up her newly obtained Homecoming crown, nabbing a 6-3, 6-2 win. Central was on the way to picking up a second team point with Sydney Peters and Hailey Kowalski leading 3-2 in the second set, already up a 7-6(7-5) set one win, when their match was halted with the team outcome already decided.
The Lady Barons earned that shot at LCD with a 3-2 win over Conestoga Valley on the 29th. Once again it was doubles action that carried Manheim to the win. Huber, pre-homecoming victory, joined Kettler for a 7-5, 7-5 win to seal the match.
“The key was the first set,” said Funk. “They were down 4-5 and won the next three games. Winning that first set really put the pressure on the opponent.”
Peters and Kowalski were able to complete their win, taking their top doubles match 6-1, 6-0. Bri Mylin claimed the lone singles point with Funk pointing to her net play as a key to the 6-1, 6-3 win.
FIELD HOCKEY
The field hockey team is on pace to qualify for the post-season, both in L-L play and the District 3-2A field. The Lady Barons added to their resume with wins over Cedar Crest, Ephrata and Donegal upping their overall record to 12-3.
Central rolled by Cedar Crest on the 28th with Paige Garner and Mikayla Appel combing for four goals in the 6-0 win. Laci Nelson
had two saves while Sarah Hondru and Kate Haldeman earned the final two scores.
Another shutout followed on the 30th, this one a 2-0 win over Ephrata. Nelson needed just one save to earn the win. Cali Inthavongsa put Central up 1-0 in the second with Ella Brubaker adding an insurance goal in the final frame.
Nelson just missed another one save shutout on October 4th, settling for a 2-1 win over Donegal instead. Kiley Hosler got the scoring started with a first quarter score while Inthavongsa added what proved to be a needed insurance goal in the second.

Organization Plans Freedom Walk
Hope Inspire Love, an anti-human trafficking nonprofit organization, has rescheduled its Freedom Walk for Saturday, Oct. 22. The event will now take place at Binns Park, 120 N. Queen St., Lancaster; it was originally set to be held in Musser Park on Oct. 1. The program will begin at 10 a.m., and the walk will take place from 11 a.m. to noon.
Freedom Walk is a local awareness event launched by Hope Inspire Love in 2019. It aims to raise awareness of trafficking and exploitation
affecting women, men, and children in communities such as Lancaster, Reading, York, Lebanon, Lititz, Manheim, Myerstown, Norristown, Harrisburg, and Philadelphia.
Holding signs, people will walk silently, single-file for 2.5 miles on the streets and sidewalks of Lancaster city to remind the community that trafficking exists and to invite local residents to join efforts to put an end to this crime. Additionally, individuals will be able to learn more about human trafficking by
visiting a Trafficking Simulation, an immersive experience where they will learn about a trafficking case. The event will also include a kids’ zone, music, and food trucks.
In addition to Hope Inspire Love, several other anti-trafficking nonprofits will be represented at the event, showcasing the work and services they provide in the community to fight trafficking.
For more information, visit www.HopeInspireLove.org/ walk.
Hope Inspire Love Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organiza-
tion that exists to eradicate human trafficking and sexual exploitation. It was started in 2017 with a three-part solution to fight human trafficking: awareness, prevention education, and mentorship.
Through these initiatives, Hope Inspire Love is equipping communities with antihuman trafficking tools and resources, partnering with organizations and community members to fight for vulnerable people, and disrupting the business of human trafficking through targeted awareness campaigns.
Online SNAP Program Now Available At Stauffers
Stauffers of Kissel Hill Fresh Foods stores have officially begun accepting Supplement Nutritional Assistant Program (SNAP) online payments from their customers to use on their online grocery store.
Stauffers of Kissel Hill’s ecommerce platform, Rosie, enables the store to accept SNAP online payments from households that rely on Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) benefits. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service
(FNS) recently expanded the SNAP program to online platforms.
SNAP, formerly known as the food stamp program, provides food purchasing assistance for families living in the U.S. SNAP is a federal program, administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, under the FNS, though benefits are distributed by each U.S. state’s Division of Social Services or Children and Family Services. Over 40 million Americans estimated to have par-
ticipated in SNAP annually in the 21st century. More than two-thirds of SNAP participants are families
with children, while a third are households with senior citizens or people with disabilities.

Memorial Closes For Renovations
The Pennsylvania Veterans’ Memorial, located at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville, is temporarily closed to the public f or structural repairs. The memorial, which was dedicated in 2001, is known as the largest veterans’ memorial located in any of the national cemeteries. It honors those who died in military service since World War II. Renovations are expected to take until June 2023.
The memorial is made of concrete, granite, and stone. Its structure is generally in good condition but requires repairs and alterations to address areas of damage due to long-term exposure to the elements.
Funded by the state as a public improvement project, the renovations will cost $3.6 million. Specific repairs will include re-anchoring plaques, resetting existing pre-cast concrete, waterproofing walls, replacing flashing and upgrading drainage.
Community members may pay tribute to veterans while also helping to preserve the memorial by donating to the Pennsylvania Veterans’ Memorial Trust Fund. Taxdeductible donations to the fund can be made at www.donate.dmva.pa.gov; information on donating by mail is also available on this site. Donations can be made in honor of, in memory of or on behalf of another person. One hundred percent of donations go toward the ongoing upkeep of the memorial, such as landscaping, lighting, and fountains as well as needed maintenance for structural and cosmetic components throughout the memorial.
For information about any of the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs’ services or programs for veterans, visit www.veterans.pa.gov or f ollow us at www.facebook .com/padmva or www.twitter .com/padmva.
