Dawn Mokros-Rathgeb has set a record for longest-standing chair in a volunteer position at East Petersburg Volunteer Fire Company, serving for a decade as the ways and means committee chair. In that position, she has been responsible for organizing and running the organization’s fundraising events. “Everybody thinks being part of a fire company is all about fires. It’s not,” Mokros-Rathgeb said. “For the past 10 years, I

have been able to give back to the fire company and the community without going on any fire calls.” While Mokros-Rathgeb chose to serve behind the scenes, her replacement, Kiersten Yocum, opted to go in another direction. Yocum joined the fire company last year and became a member of the fire police and the organization’s secretary. She is now training to be a firefighter. Yocum lives on the edge of the borough and decided to sign up after seeing a “Why Not You?” advertisement in the Merchandiser. “I was looking for a volunteer opportunity,” Yocum explained. “I didn’t know what I was doing, but they’ve been showing me what to do.” Volunteers are needed to help the fire company run smoothly and to protect community resources. There are a wide range of capacities in which folks may serve. “Volunteering with the fire company isn’t just putting out fires,” Yocum remarked. “We desperately need people on the administrative side.” Yocum will officially become chair of the ways and means committee at the start of 2019. Mokros-Rathgeb’s final event in that position will be the fall

potpie takeout sale, which will be held on Saturday, Nov. 3, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. or until the food is sold out. Folks must come to the fire station, 6076 Pine St., East Petersburg, to buy quarts of the savory favorite. Customers are encouraged to bring boxes or sturdy bags if they plan to purchase large quantities of potpie. The doors will not open before 9 a.m., and potpie will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. “People know they have to get here early,” commented fire company vice president and ways and means committee member Frank Mokros. Volunteers will begin cooking at 4 a.m. on Nov. 3. Three batches of beef potpie and 13 of chicken potpie are slated to be made. That is an increase of two chicken batches, approximately 220 quarts, from the sale in February, which sold out entirely. The entrees are made from scratch and cooked in two industrial kettles. As volunteers prepare for the fundraiser, Mokros-Rathgeb is hoping that Nov. 3 will be a dry day. “Humidity can affect dough,” Mokros-Rathgeb said. “The weather can be a factor. It can be

tricky; people don’t realize it.” Folks are invited to come out to the potpie takeout event and bid farewell to Mokros-Rathgeb and make Yocum’s acquaintance. “And fill out a volunteer form,” Yocum said. As Yocum looks toward beginning her tenure, she said that she plans to keep the fundraising calendar the same as it has been in previous years, but she would like to eventually add a summer event. The twice-yearly potpie sales are slated to continue as well. For more information about the fire company, readers may call the station at 717-5695035, visit www.epfc23.com, or find East Petersburg Volunteer Fire Company on Facebook and Twitter. Pictured on front: East Petersburg Volunteer Fire Company ways and means committee chair Dawn Mokros-Rathgeb (left) will turn her role over to Kiersten Yocum (right) at the start of 2019. Folks may meet the two chairpersons at a potpie takeout sale on Nov. 3, which will be supported by additional volunteers, including Frank Mokros (center).

Packet pickup for those who register in advance will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 29, and Friday, Nov. 30, at Trinity Evangelical Congregational Church, 48 Market Square, Manheim. Race-day check-in and registration will be open from 6:30 to 8 a.m. at the church, and participants will step off for the race at 8:30 a.m. Chip timing and mile markers will be provided, and a water station will be positioned at the halfway point. “Many participants tell us that this race is a very organized event,” remarked Lions Club member Nancy Husser, adding that plenty of volunteers are present throughout the course. Water and snacks are supplied to runners and walkers at the finish line. A post-race awards ceremony will begin at approximately 9:30 a.m. Trophies will be awarded to the top overall male and female finishers, as well as to the top male and female finishers in various age groups. Stage actor Lanny Millette is making his directorial debut with the latest Promise Players production, “The Money in Uncle George’s Suitcase,” which will be performed nine times between Friday, Oct. 26, and Sunday, Nov. 4, at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster. “It is definitely challenging to be the director. There’s a lot more time involved - I’ve been busy recruiting sound and lighting technicians - and now I’m responsible for all aspects of the play,” Millette remarked. Millette started preparing for the production by reading through the script by Pat Cook an estimated 12 times even before auditions were scheduled. “I’m enjoying (the directorial process),” Millette said. “If you pick the right actors, it comes together on its own.” He noted that the actors were nearly ready to go off-book by the second week in October. “The actors I have are giving life to their characters. I just see it getting better and better by show time,” he added. “The Money in Uncle George’s Suitcase” is a comedy drama involving Uncle George Plunkett (Wayne Rhinier) and his family members. The clan patriarch has invited the family to spend a weekend in his rustic cabin, where he surprises them by reading his will. The biggest surprise, however, is that a suitcase holding $480,000 is apparently hidden somewhere on the property. The family members react with pettiness, slander, and greed before being confronted with their bad behavior, but in a way that Millette hopes audience will find humorous. “It was so much fun to watch my wife read it,” Millette related. “She was laughing until she was crying, just from reading the script. Audiences will be blessed by it.” Promise Players is a Christian theater company, and Millette noted that while this play is not overtly spiritual, it does have a

spiritual lesson. “Matthew 6:1921 encapsulates the meaning of the play: It’s important to put your treasures in the eternal, (not on earth where they can be destroyed or stolen).” One of the practical ways to live out that lesson is to show kindness to others. With the proceeds from each production, Promise Players gives a sizeable donation to a nonprofit organization that is doing good in a way that is related to the respective show. This time, the beneficiary will be the Lancaster-based A Week Away Foundation, which was founded by the late Caleb Walker in order to provide people with life-threatening illnesses a feeling of normalcy and hope. One of the getaway options is to a rural area. Millette pointed out that the play is located in a cabin, and there are some mental

health overtones as well. “We think (A Week Away) is doing a great thing,” he remarked. “The Money in Uncle George’s Suitcase” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 26; Saturday, Oct. 27; Thursday, Nov. 1; Friday, Nov. 2; and Saturday, Nov. 3. Two original plaster of Paris sculptures - “Melancholy Heart” and “Young at Heart” - are part of the exhibit to give viewers a threedimensional understanding of David’s creations. “David designed the lettering for a stencil (depending on the subject) of the heart,” explained Patricia, who noted that the cold heart bears images reminiscent of icicles on its surface, the wounded heart bears a gash, and the “hole in my heart” design has a small, round opening in it. Each heart is painted and coated with varnish. Coupled with another piece titled “Love,” which he completed in 2013, David’s work forms a statement about the ways domestic violence and sexual assault can scar hearts. The “Love” painting, which is 88 by 43 inches, appears to be an ode to the motifs of love, but when one looks closely, the border contains statistics about domestic

The Bake Shoppe at Country Table, located at 740 E. Main St., Mount Joy, will hold its second annual Customer Appreciation Day on Saturday, Oct. 27, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. “When my husband and I took over the business last year, we never looked at it as getting into the bakery business; we were getting into the celebration business,” said Jessica Daly, who, along with her husband, Tom, owns and operates The Bake Shoppe. “Yes, we bake products from amazing recipes and use the best ingredients, but our mission is to help bring people together through celebration,” Jessica explained. “Our Customer Appreciation Day is a celebration of the one ingredient we couldn’t do without - our customers.” The Bake Shoppe at Country Table is a full-service bakery specializing in homemade pies, custom cakes, cupcakes, cookies, and pastries. The Bake Shoppe team spent its first year brainstorming ways to make the shopping experience special for its customers. “We are particularly proud of our

new online cake ordering app,” said Tom, who has a background in engineering from Virginia Tech. “We thought ordering a birthday cake should be easy and fun, so we built an app that lets you customize a cake from your phone in five minutes or less.” The customer appreciation event on Oct. 27 will feature a variety of promotions and giveaways. “We’re going to have fun this year with a different promotion every two hours,” said Jessica. “We start off with free coffee with every purchase from 7 until 9 a.m., and after that we’ll have some of our bestselling items promoted at buy-one-get-one free.” Buy-one-get-one-free promotions, which will exclude orders, will include cupcakes from 9 to 11 a.m., cookies from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and whoopie pies from 1 to 4 p.m. Additionally, the shop will offer 50 percent off all doughnuts, muffins, and sticky buns from 4 to 7 p.m. All of that is on top of free samples of baked goods ranging from muffins and cookies to pumpkin pie. Tom and Jessica will personally

hand out samples to customers from 9 to 11 a.m. “If you haven’t been in for a while, come by this Saturday,” encouraged Jessica. “We’d love to meet you.” For more information about The Bake Shoppe at Country

Table or to place an order, readers may visit www.thebakeshoppe.net or call 717-4928440. The Bake Shoppe at Country Table is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Mondays through Saturdays.

After a successful first year, Jessica and Tom Daly, owners of The Bake Shoppe at Country Table in Mount Joy, are preparing to celebrate the shop’s second annual Customer Appreciation Day on Saturday, Oct. 27.

help to provide financial support for performances and activities. Boosters also volunteer time for everything from stage crew to craft services to wardrobe, beginning with uniform fittings and alterations during band camp and continuing throughout the year. “This year we had a team that came together to cut over 100 yards of fabric into more than 250 individual pieces to be able to make the 36 swing flags needed to equip the color guard,” recalled Cressler. “Another crew designed and constructed the on-field props, and others show up every week to load and manage the equipment onto and off of the trucks.” “The Boosters organization works like we do because we have seen what a benefit the marching band program is to our kids,” Cressler said. She noted that under Brackbill’s leadership, the program has grown to provide arts and music-minded students in Manheim Central with a space to be themselves and grow and develop socially as well as artistically.

ers president Becke Cressler said that with 20 schools participating, the invitational is one of the largest Cavalcade events in the region. “It makes for a really great day of music in a fun, fair-like atmosphere,” Cressler shared, adding that the musical styles vary from today’s hits to classical. “It is a really great opportunity to expose younger kids who might just be starting out on playing an instrument to how far they can grow by the time they get to high school if they stick with it and practice a bit,” remarked Cressler. “This might also be good for the parents to see, as providing encouragement to young musicians is a really important aspect of keeping kids engaged with music.” Proceeds from the invitational will benefit the Manheim Central Band Boosters, a fundraising group made up of parents of band members. With the attacking weapons that we have, you expect us to get a second goal, but it just didn’t come tonight.” The Barons had its chances to finish, including three straight corners and four total during roughly a two-minute stretch late in the first half. Copley and Erin Greiner each had headers on net after one of Carper’s corner kicks. After a scoreless first half, Central tied the game at 1-1 as Summer Bates found the back of the net on a cross pass from Copley. The Barons, who have yet to lose to a Class 3A opponent this season, will (CV is in Class 4A) compete in the District Three Class 3A playoffs this week. Central hosts 15th seed Cocalico (8-6-3). If Central wins, it will face the winner of 7th seed Northern York (12-5-1) and 10th seed East Pennsboro (12-5-1) Thursday at a location to be determined. Stoltzfus said the team’s goal to

make the state playoffs is still intact and is only two wins away. He said the offense started clicking about half way through the season when the Barons made some offensive lineup adjustments and haven’t looked back. He moved Levy to left wing, Greiner up top and Hannah Adair out wide to the right. All three players produced plenty of goals for the Barons this season. Carper lead the team with seven goals, 11 assists. Copley had four goals, four assists, Adair, five goals, one assist, Levy five goals, one assist and Greiner four goals, four assists. On defense, Central goalie Kreider only gave up five goals during the regular season and had 7 shutouts in 10 games. After taking a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, Central poured it on in the second quarter with a whopping 35 points to blow the game wide open. It is the Barons 25th Section Two crown. physicality and win the majority of the 50/50 balls to win the game. “Both teams started out a little flat, but once we were about 10 minutes in, the game became much more intense,” Briggs said. “We dominated possession most of the game and had quite a few very nice passing combinations. The girls worked so hard during this game, especially in overtime, but just came up a little short.” Briggs said senior Maisie Dorwart played phenomenal defense and did a great job stepping up on the attacking side of the ball. Briggs also said Lutz had a beautiful goal to tie the game. “The girls are playing better as a team and things seem to be clicking,” Briggs said. “We are hopeful and confident we can carry the

Hannah Kowalski finished fifth in Flight One singles and earned a trip to the District Three Class 3A tournament where she finished in the quarterfinals. She won her first match Friday, Oct. 12 against Olivia Richards of Governor Mifflin, 6-3, 6-0, and then dropped a tough quarterfinal bout to Alex Pancu (Conrad Weiser), 6-1, 6-2. They won their first round of districts and finished in the quarterfinals at Hershey Racquet Club on Friday, Oct. 19. They lost to a doubles team from Carlisle, 6-2, 6-1 and beat a duo from Conrad Weiser, 6-2, 7-5.

Boys And Girls Club To Host GOTR Team Girls on the Run (GOTR) is partnering with the Boys and Girls Club to launch its first-ever third- through fifth-grade team at its clubhouse this fall. By hosting a team at the Boys and Girls Club, GOTR is acting on its commitment to ensure that its programs are accessible to anyone who wants to participate. Girls on the Run is a physical activity-based, positive youth development program designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological, and physical competencies to successfully navigate life experiences. Teams of 15 girls from third through eighth grades meet after school to learn critical life skills and build physical fitness. The culminating event is a celebratory 5K, which the girls complete with an adult running buddy. This season, 800 girls on 61 teams ranging in ages from 8 to 14 are participating in the 10week program. The girls on these teams will learn about selfesteem, positive body image, and setting and achieving goals through a curriculum that combines experiential games with physical activity to address the whole girl’s health: physical, emotional, mental, social, and spiritual. Hundreds of volunteer coaches lead the curriculum. The goal is to provide access by ensuring GOTR is available where girls gather, in their community or school. GOTR is mindful of girls with physical and cognitive disabilities and strives to provide curriculum modifications when needed. All girls will have a coach who has been trained to understand social context, create positive inclusive environments, and build genuine relationships. GOTR is currently recruiting coaches who introduce diversity to the coaching team. Readers may visit the website for more information or contact Jennifer West at jwest@gotrlancaster.org. The season-culminating 5K event is open to anyone who wants to run or walk. The Girls on the Run 5K will take place on Saturday, Nov. 10, at 9 a.m. To register as an individual or a team of five or more people or to volunteer, readers may visit www.gotrlancaster.org/5K.

The Mount Joy Area Historical Society (MJAHS) began conducting a membership drive on Oct. 1 that will continue through Saturday, Dec. 1. Currently, the society has 135 individual members, and the membership committee has set a goal of 500 members. According to MJAHS member Don Zerphey, the mission of the MJAHS is “to seek, preserve, and make available the history of the Mount Joy area. Many documents, including cemetery records, obituaries, local news articles, artifacts, maps, genealogy books, and other resources are available for the public to view and research. The society also has a large collection of historical photographs and postcards for the community to look through and enjoy. In 2019, the society plans to begin to convert these paper documents to digital format for easier access and to preserve for future

generations. MJAHS representatives note that this conversion will take considerable time and money. This fall, the society also plans to open its new addition, the Cemetery Road Schoolhouse, which is a completely renovated 1842 one-room schoolhouse. Renovating the building has been a five-year project with generous support from the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center; the Clarence Schock Foundation; Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc.; and many other financial and in-kind contributions from individuals and local businesses. The schoolhouse will become the society’s regular meeting room for monthly programs and eventually will be available for other community needs. Once the schoolhouse is occupied and in use for meetings, the former church that serves as the society’s current museum at 120 Fairview St., Mount

Joy, will be redesigned to accommodate the new Clarence Schock Foundation artifacts. New showcases will be needed to house and display these artifacts, as well as the society’s large collection of historical items manufactured or used in the Mount Joy area. While the future of the MJAHS is bright, more members are needed to support its efforts, both financially and in working members. Information stands about the MJAHS and its membership drive will be set up at local businesses throughout the coming weeks and also at Main Street Mount Joy’s Winterfest event on Dec. 1. Interested individuals may also visit www.mountjoyhistory.com to complete an online application. Additionally, hard-copy applications are available at the Mount Joy Area Historical Society Museum, 120 Fairview St., Mount Joy, on Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. and at the monthly meetings held the third Monday of the month from March through November.
