Strike Up The Bands BY CATHY MOLITORIS
When Manheim Central High School hosts its marching band invitational, expect to see a little bit of everything. “Every band has sort of a story they’ll be telling, and it’s exciting to see what each school does for their program,” said Bob Stauffer, who is organizing the event. The Baron Invitational will be held on Saturday, Oct. 30, beginning at 5 p.m. at the football stadium at the high school, 400 Adele Ave. Stauffer said that at least nine bands from the central Pennsylvania region will compete in the event. “You’ll see the performance you’d see at halftime during a football game,” he explained, adding that the bands will be judged on a variety of elements and will be awarded prizes. This will be the fourth judged event this season for Manheim Central’s band, he noted, which will help the band prepare for the Cavalcade of Bands Championship held in Hershey in November. A Sweet Time In Manheim BY CATHY MOLITORIS
ayton Shoenfelt loves Halloween. Now the Manheim Central High School sophomore is hoping to share her enthusiasm for the holiday with the community. She’s organizing a Trunk or Treat, an event hosted by Manheim Central Student Council. The Trunk or Treat will be held on Thursday, Oct. 28, from 5 to 8 p.m. in the back parking lot of the school, 400 Adele Ave. “I came up with the idea for this,” she stated. “I wanted to do something fun for the community.”
P
As Payton explained, Trunk or Treat is open to anyone in the Manheim community with children age 14 and under. “Students who have cars and also a bunch of businesses will be getting together to hand out candy,” she stated. “The cars will be decorated, and we’ll give out candy from the trunk. It’s a fun way to go trick or treating in one safe, condensed area.” She encourages participants to bring a bag to collect their candy. Donations will be accepted at the event for the school’s Mini-THON,
which will be held in the spring. “Mini-THON helps to raise money for kids who are struggling with pediatric cancer,” Payton remarked. “It’s part of the bigger Penn State event called THON.” Trunk or Treat is one of several small fundraisers for Mini-THON held throughout the school year. Payton, who will be dressed as a scarecrow for the Trunk or Treat, said she loves Halloween for many reasons. “I love that everybody gets to dress up in fun costumes. I love going around and getting candy, and I just love the chance to
celebrate,” she explained. “It’s just a really fun holiday.” She noted that the Trunk or Treat will be held the night before trick-or-treat night in the Manheim community, and she encourages people to come out for a fun event. “It’s going to be a great time for people to get together and have a good time while getting lots of candy,” she said. “And it’s also a chance to support a great fundraiser at the same time. I hope people will come out to celebrate Halloween and to give whatever they can toward Mini-THON.”

“Messiah” To Be Performed In Concert BY CATHY MOLITORIS
When Tom Berdos was growing up, he remembers hearing Handel’s “Messiah” during the holidays. “My parents often had it playing in the house, so I’ve always associated it with Christmas,” said the director of music at Chiques United Methodist Church (UMC) in Mount Joy. “I always wanted to conduct it, so finally I said, ‘ Why not?’” He asked that question and made the leap into conducting the piece - about 20 years ago. Now he’s preparing to conduct it again, this time for the first time at the
Mount Joy church, located at 1215 E. Main St. On Sunday, Dec. 12, the music ministry of the church will present the Christmas portion of “Messiah” at 4 p.m. in a concert featuring a large community chorus and full orchestra. Tickets for the concert will go on sale on Monday, Nov. 1. A group of singers and instrumentalists from the community and surrounding areas has been hard at work practicing for the concert since early October. Along with community members, soloists at the concert will include soprano Monica Ziglar, mezzo-soprano Amy
Yovanovich, tenor Brian Ernstes and bass Justin Beck. Berdos, who became director of music at Chiques UMC in June, is joined in rehearsals by his wife, Deborah, who is the church organist. She’ll also sing soprano in the concert. Berdos said the concert offers the community an opportunity to hear an iconic piece of music that’s been performed consistently since it was composed in the 1740s. “It was originally conceived as a concert piece,” he explained. Over the years, he has honed his conducting skills for the music, which proved to be
a challenge. “The first year I conducted it was a learning experience,” Berdos said, “but we got through it. It’s not the easiest to conduct.” Despite the rigor of conducting such a challenging piece, Berdos doesn’t envision stopping any time soon. “I do this for the glory of God,” he stated. “And it also gives people in the community the opportunity to sing this wonderful piece of music as part of the chorus or to enjoy it as part of the audience.” For more information on the concert or to order tickets, call the “Messiah” ticket line at 717-742-5254 or email ccmusic.tom@gmail.com.

The performance also includes period music and dancing, which was coordinated in part by Rock Ford’s period dancers, led by Glenda Jardel. To comply with COVID-19 precautions and to allow the play to be performed within the house, tickets are limited to 15 per performance, and face coverings by audience members will be required. WSM Plans Annual Rescue Mission Food Drive BY COURTNEY MENGEL
For the past 116 years, Water Street Mission (WSM), located at 210 S. Prince St., Lancaster, has provided men, women, and children experiencing homelessness in Lancaster County with access to medical, dental, behavioral health, spiritual, and career support. As a religious organization, one of the goals of WSM is to give people a sense
of hope and healing so they can find restoration with God. On Monday, Nov. 1, WSM will launch its annual Rescue Mission Food Drive (RMFD) with the goal of collecting over 70,000 pounds of nonperishable food - which would weigh roughly the same as 24 cars - by Sunday, Dec. 19. Proceeds from RMFD will go in two directions: providing meals for men, women, and children experiencing home-

lessness and also supporting the Outreach Center, a food distribution center for neighbors of WSM. The Outreach Center provides grocery assistance to over 2,000 individuals and families, sharing roughly 646,000 pounds of groceries with the community each year. According to Dan Siewart, vice president of community ministries and outreach, WSM serves food to about 300 families every week. Therefore, the food collected during RMFD is instrumental in meeting the needs of the community, especially as the winter season nears. This winter, WSM estimates it will serve nearly 45,000 meals in its dining hall for men, women, and children experiencing homelessness. Over the colder months, WSM sees an increase in intakes as guests seek to escape the elements. “We appreciate people in the community who have partnered with us through this food drive,” said Siewart. “We really feel blessed and
supported. Every year, people take part in this, so they’re helping us in more ways than one. It lifts our spirits when we see people respond.” Some of the suggested donation items include boxed cereal, canned fruit, canned meats, canned vegetables, condiments, pasta, rice, mac and cheese, and more. Items in glass containers are strongly discouraged. Donations can be dropped off at Sharp Shopper, Boscov’s, Community Aid, and any Sheetz, Weis Markets, and AAA Central Penn location in Lancaster County. Donations can also be dropped off at WSM’s dock on Mondays through Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Anyone looking to participate or learn more about the event and food items needed can visit http://rescue missionfooddrive.org. To learn more about WSM, visit www.WSM.org. Individuals who need support may dial 211 to be referred to programs for which they qualify.

Gridiron Team Dominates Buckskins 63-0
BY ERIC G. STARK
At halftime Friday night, Oct. 15, three Conestoga Valley players left the field on a Gator, as Manheim Central beat up the Buckskins during a 63-0 shellacking, spoiling CV’s homecoming in Witmer. Just 12 minutes into the game and it was 28-0 Barons. Central returned a fumble for a touchdown, intercepted two balls for TDs and blocked a field attempt (Brode Sipel) - all in the first half. After scoring two TDs in the first two minutes of the game, Central led 56-0
at halftime. They added a punt return for a score in the second half. Nick Haas scoped up the fumble recovery for a 24-yard score, Kahlen Watt had the two INTS for TDs, and Owen Sensenig had a 45-yard punt return TD. Quarterback Judd Novak threw for three TD passes - two to Sensenig and one to Logan Hostetter, on a ball Novak lofted over the defensive back on a beautiful touch pass for a 24-yard score. Novak also rushed for two scores. Central’s defense and special teams really shined.

“Our big emphasis was just executing our offense and defense and just trying, really, our biggest emphasis was trying to stay healthy,” Barons’ coach Dave Hahn said. “We are banged up after a front-loaded schedule. We tried to two-platoon as best we can and get guys in and out of the game as best as we can. We weren’t as clean as we wanted to be, but we were also trying to get other guys in.” What pleased Hahn the most was his team battling through injuries, battling through fatigue, the tiredness and not making excuses; they are just going out and winning games. “Their resilience,” he said. “I was worried about where we were at with the kids. They just seemed so darn tired. But today, at the beginning of the game, they just played. They came out and played right away. Everything we dealt with, and the injuries, the tough practices and we came out ready to go.” FIELD HOCKEY The field hockey team wrapped up Section Two play with a 2-1 victory over visiting Lampeter-Strasburg Thursday, October 14. Despite being out cornered 11-7, the Barons took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Mikayla Appel, her fifth of the season, at the 2:36 mark of the first half. Both teams found the back of the cage in the second half with Kylie Kroesen tipping Kiley Hosler’s shot right off the L-S goalie pads. Lampeter’s Rowan Kimmel scored for the Pioneers but Appel’s first half goal stood to be the difference. Kroesen was also credited with an assist and Avery Wagner preserved the victory
with seven saves as the Barons improve to 9-8-0 overall. BOYS’ SOCCER The Barons battled Hempfield for more than 110 minutes without a winner and ultimately fell to the Black Knights 4-3 on penalty kicks in the Lancaster-Lebanon League semifinals on Oct. 19. The Barons scored first against Hempfield, the top seed for the L-L League tournament and the No.3 seed in Class 4A for districts. Luke Redcay sent a pass to Connor Caterbone, who found the back of the net in the 24th minute of the first half. Hempfield scored 10 minutes later to tie the game at 1-1. It remained that score through regulation and two overtimes. The score was tied 3-3 on penalty kicks when Noah Felty, Hempfield’s goalie, sent a shot high into the right corner of the nail to secure the win for the Black Knights. Central keeper Dylan Smith had 16 saves. The Barons season is not over, as they now prepare for the district playoffs. Last Saturday, Manheim beat Section Four champion Pequea Valley, 41, in the first round of the league playoffs. Redcay got the Barons on the board first. After a weather delay, Redcay’s brother, Gabe, found the back of the net to make it 2-0. After intermission, Gabe Redcay scored again, and Bradyn Dombach added a goal. The Braves had only one shot. at Ephrata Middle School on Oct. 19. Julie Lindberg, Olivia Sunderland, and Reagan Ibach also qualified for districts, which is Oct. 30 at Big Springs High School. Moffett place 44th overall with a time of 22:11 out of 156 girls competing. Sunderland (22:23) was 52nd overall, Ibach (22:26) was 55th and Lindberg (22:45) was 66th overall. Hadelyn Hoffman (23:54) was 90th. “For the girls, our goal was to qualify for districts as a team,” Barons’ coach Ryan Kennedy said. “This was a lofty, but I thought an attainable goal. We fell short of that goal, but still had four girls qualify (for districts).” For the boys, Michael Greenwald earned a berth in the district meet with a time of 18:36, good for 68th overall out of 174 participants.
“Michael was our front runner yet again,” Kennedy said. “His finish qualified him for the district meet.” VOLLEYBALL Manheim lost to Garden Spot in a highly contested match on Oct. 19 by scores of 25-21, 25-20 and 25-23 in New Holland. Grace Stoltzfus paced the Barons with 20 assists. Emma Damon had eight digs and Emma Moyer led the team with five kills. Maddie Knier paced the club with 11 kills and three blocks. The Barons bounced back Oct. 20 with a 3-0 victory over Solanco with game scores of 25-12, 25-15, 25-13. Stoltzfus dished out 24 assists and Damon added nine digs. Rachel Nolt and Camryn Heth each had four aces. Knier paced the team with 10 kills. Natalie Siegrist registered three blocks.

Country Fair And Market Has Something For Everyone BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Get ready for some fun, fellowship and really great food. According to Marcia Brooks, that’s what you’ll find at the annual Country Fair and Market held at Glossbrenner United Methodist Church, 713 Church St., Mount Joy. This year’s event will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 5, and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 6. On Friday, a potpie dinner will be served, featuring chicken potpie with coleslaw, applesauce, a roll and water. Meals will be available to eat in house or for takeout. “This is homemade, Lancaster County potpie,” said Brooks. “We get a lot of great comments on it. It’s delicious.” On Saturday, food options will include hot dogs and homemade macaroni and cheese, along with chips and soda. A free hot dog will be offered to all children age 10 and under. Homemade baked goods, prepared by church members, will be for sale as well.
On both days, a craft show will feature items made by a committee of church members, who work on creating inventory year-round for the event. “We have a lot of fall and Christmas items,” Brooks noted. “We also have a lot of useful household items like tea towels, scrubbies and dishcloths.” Additional crafts for sale will include wreaths, snowman and other holiday décor, crocheted doll dresses and paintings by a local artist. Rounding out the activities at the event will be a yard sale, featuring a wide variety of gently used items, said Emmajane Davis. “There is something for everyone,” she noted. “We have clothing for all sizes, plus purses, shoes, kitchen items and household items.” All yard sale items are donated by church members or friends and family of church members and are available for purchase by donation. The Country Fair and Market is a project of the Caring Hands and Hearts outreach committee at the church. “Our

mission is to help anybody in need, whether they are a member of our church or a member of our community,” Davis explained. Proceeds from the event will benefit the church’s kitchen fund and will go toward the purchase of a new stove. Davis said the Country Fair and Market offers a way not only to raise money for the church but also to help people connect with one another. “We will have tables set up for eating, but you can also just come in and sit and chat and enjoy the fellowship,” she said. “Everyone is welcome.” For more information on the Country Fair and Market, visit www.gumcmj.net or call the church at 717-653-5683.

Manheim Central’s marching band will perform at the Baron Invitational.
The event is a fundraiser for the Manheim Central marching band booster club, and an admission fee will be charged. Concessions will be available for purchase. Stauffer said not only do audiences have an opportunity to see a variety of marching bands in one location, but the band members also have the benefit of hearing directly from the judges after the event. “The bands get to meet with the judges for their critique, so they learn what they did well and what they could improve on,” he explained. “It’s a good opportunity for growth.” Stauffer has been a band parent for years, watching two daughters go through the program. His youngest, who plays the mellophone, is currently a freshman, but started playing with the band in eighth grade as a “super freshman.”
He said being a band parent has not only improved his music appreciation - he can now listen to a brass instrument and identify it, for example - but has also given him the chance to watch the band students develop their musical skills. “The first time you see their show, which is usually right after band camp, it’s rough and it’s raw and it’s really all over the place,” he stated. “By the time we get to this part in the season, it’s refined. They’ve introduced all these visuals, like synchronized movements among the musicians, and it goes from a bunch of players on the field to an organized, choreographed performance. Watching that happen is amazing.” For more information on the Baron Invitational, visit www.mcmarchingbarons.org.

The Lancaster County Fossil and Mineral Club (LCFMC) is a registered nonprofit organization that began in 2014. Its mission is to bring together local people who share an interest in geology and paleontology. LCFMC will host its seventh annual Discovering Earth’s Wonders Fall Show. The event will take place on Saturday, Nov. 6, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Trinity Reformed Church of Christ, 450 W. Main St., Mountville. Those who attend will see unique fossils, trilobites, Paleozoic wonders, gems, jewelry, minerals, and

crystals from Pennsylvania and beyond. Many of the items included in the show have been collected by LCFMC members. Specimens will be displayed for perusal or purchase at discounted prices. There will also be free “ask the experts” analysis to identify special specimens. “This event is held each year just for our local friends and neighbors,” said club founder Chris Haefner. “They can come and find out about the club in a fun-filled environment.” There will also be children’s activities, and a variety of hot food, provided by the Trinity Reformed Church of Christ Guild, will be available for purchase. Haefner noted that he is most looking forward to enjoying an in-person event with good conversation and good food. The show entrance will be in the rear of the church building. Tickets for the show can be purchased on the day of the event. Admission for kids age 5 and under is free. For more information, search for “Lancaster County Fossil and Mineral Club” on Facebook. The club has monthly meetings with presentations, and members go on local and outof-state field trips. Additionally, the club helps Scouts earn their merit loops and badges, and a few qualified members teach geology for free. For instance, the Pequea Silver Mines is just one of the several places where geology is taught to local school districts. Proceeds from club membership and shows allow for building rental, insurance for members, field trip expenses, events for Scouts, and more.
