Manheim Drive-Through Parade Raises More Than $8,400 BY CATHY MOLITORIS

The Manheim Drive-Through Parade was held on Oct. 7 in the parking lot of Manheim Brethren in Christ (BIC) Church. Participants included the local police, ambulance and fire departments, as well as the Manheim Central marching band and cheerleaders. “ We had 21 sponsor stands, which included local businesses, performances and nonprofit organizations,” said Anna Horst, communications director for Manheim BIC.

Awards were given out for participants. Ryan and Noelle Herr and their family won first place for Best Decorated Car. Sharon Winters won second place in that category. A photo contest was also held, and Riley Sauder won the prize. At the end of the parade, the church handed out milkshakes. More than $8,400 was raised during the event, Horst said, with the money benefiting the Mount Hope Nazarene Retirement Community, Manheim 4-H and FFA. “We chose these organizations See Parade pg 3

was undoubtedly a partnership. Alvin was a quiet, hardworking businessman who took care of planning, pricing, and production, while Pauline, more outgoing, did the hiring and day-to-day employee management. “She could never have done it without him, and he would not have done it without her,” recalled Charlie Engle, President of EPC. After Alvin Engle passed, Pauline decided to continue the family business with her children, who all agreed that they should pursue their parents’ dream. Before Alvin’s death, plans had already been drawn up for a new building where the company could expand. Two years after he passed, the family moved into their new facility on West Main Street. Later, a large production facility was added in West Hempfield, Lancaster County. W hile Pauline may not have imagined that the business would become what it did, her children had plans

Parade from pg 1 because one, we feel it is an important time to help the elderly in our community; two, the farm show is all about students and their love of animals; and three, these groups fundraise at the Manheim Farm Show, which was canceled,” Horst explained. Although the event differed from the traditional parade held during the farm show, Horst said it exceeded expectations. “We had 950 vehicles come through the parade and gave out 3,750 milkshakes,” she shared. “We were thrilled to see all the community interest and participation. Some people waited up to two hours in line.” She said an event like this is

important because it impacts the whole community. “We believe that community matters, so we spent some time listening and brainstorming ways to bring our neighbors together to support and inspire each other,” she explained. “We also hoped to help fill a void left by the loss of so many meaningful experiences and events that give us a sense of pride and belonging in our community.” Horst explained that the parade was a success due to the hard work of everyone involved. “We are really grateful to the over 100 volunteers, 21 sponsors and many others who generously donated to help make this event happen,” she said.

because of its scenic views. Its unique Victorian architecture pays homage to its roots of coal mining and industrialism, which today house unique shops and eateries, museums and galleries and popular entertainment venues. With its nostalgic feel coupled with unique history and exciting recreation, Jim Thorpe is a favorite for weekend getaways for many types of travelers. But to truly understand Jim Thorpe’s appeal, one must first look at its roots. Originally named Mauch Chunk, the town was pivotal to America’s industrial development as a main transport area for coal mining. The coal mined throughout what’s now known as the Pocono Mountains was transported from Mauch Chunk to Eastern markets via the Lehigh River, which helped to build the local economy and establish the community as an independent leader in a growing industrial market. Many of the transportation systems of the era, including canals, locks, dams and early gravity railroads, are still a strong part of the community’s

culture today. The focus on coal and modern transportation methods brought early 19th-century entrepreneurs to the area, including Asa Packer, a Connecticut native and carpenter by trade. Packer realized the opportunity the coal region held and used his skills to build and repair canal boats to transport coal, eventually establishing the firm of A. & R. W. Packer, which built canal boats and locks for the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company. Packer and his family settled in Mauch Chunk. Packer’s sights were set even higher on finding ways to use technology to transport the region’s rich coal resources. In the mid-1850s, Packer took control of a railway line from Mauch Chunk to Easton and connected railway lines to the coal mines in Luzerne and Schuylkill counties. Known as the Lehigh Valley Railroad Company, the line eventually extended into the Susquehanna Valley and New York state to connect with the Erie Railroad, effectively growing the region’s industrial reach even farther and establishing Mauch

It’s possible to get both COVID-19 and the flu at the same time — and to spread those viruses to the people around you. But you can greatly reduce your chance of catching the flu and spreading it to others by getting a flu shot. And if you do catch the flu, the vaccine can reduce the severity of your illness. We’re fighting two health threats this season, so every little bit helps. One little shot can make a big difference.

Chunk as a center of industrial commerce, tourism and entertainment. Today, visitors can get a glimpse of Packer’s success with a visit to the Asa Packer Mansion, a National Historic Landmark that overlooks the Lehigh River and Mauch Chunk National Historic District and that remains much like it did when first constructed in 1861 as a memorial to Packer and his accomplishments. Visitors can learn more about Packer’s successes as a businessman and his work as a philanthropist through guided tours held throughout the day at the 17room Italianate villa. If you want to experience a little of what it was really like to live as a Packer you can stay at the Harry Packer Mansion Inn, just down the street from the Asa Packer Mansion. Harry Packer, the elder Packer’s son, lived in the Victorian mansion, complete with 15-foot ceilings, marble fireplaces and gilded mirrors reflecting the elegance of the Victorian age. Guests can enjoy period furnishings and artwork at the inn and even take part in special wine tastings or murder mystery weekends, a nod to the fact that the home was the inspiration for Walt Disney World’s “Haunted Mansion.” Take a self-guided walking or Segway tour to learn more about some of the historic downtown. Visit the Mauch Chunk Museum and Cultural Center to learn more about the town’s history, where there’s even a working model of the Switchback Railroad, one of the very earliest in the region. Any tour of the village must include Historic Stone Row, a series of stone row houses Asa Packer built for his engineers and foremen of the Lehigh Valley Railroad. You’ll also find Victorian buildings along Broadway

now housing cute shops offering everything from handmade soaps and pottery to wine tasting rooms, antiques and art galleries. Don’t miss Somersault Letterpress, a vintage letterpress and creative studio, or Rainbow’s End, a quaint corner candy shop sure to amaze kids (and kids at heart) Outdoors enthusiasts can enjoy an entirely different aspect of Jim Thorpe, no matter what the season. After all, the many railways and waterways of the area’s storied past make for excellent outdoor recreation today. Take a 9-mile downhill bike trip on the Switchback Trail to the picturesque Broadway in downtown Jim Thorpe. Bike or hike through the Lehigh Gorge Rail Trail for some truly spectacular scenery, or visit any of the numerous local trailheads accessible from town. Take to the water for a challenging whitewater rafting ride or take a scenic kayak paddle through the gorge and surrounding waterways. Several outfitters are available to arrange tours to explore the region’s waters. Naturalists may want to spend a relaxing afternoon at the Bear Mountain Butterfly Sanctuary. Romantic small-town charm, entrepreneurship, a legendary past and scenic vistas all make their home in the Pocono Mountains’ Jim Thorpe. Discover this unique spot for a weekend getaway in the Switzerland of America. Visit whereandwhen .com/jim-thorpe for more on Jim Thorpe, including the Jail House Museum, which is said to be haunted by the Ghosts of the Molly Maguires. Note: Some of the attractions mentioned in the article may be closed for the season or have altered hours due to COVID-19. Please check websites for days and hours of operation.

Banner Program from pg 1 downtown business community to attract residents, businesses, commerce and investment,” said Jason Horst, owner of Horst Arts and a member of the committee. For the banner program, businesses in the central business district, COA (Conversion, Office and Apartment) and C-1 (Highway Commercial) areas of Manheim may purchase a 12-by48-inch banner to display outside their storefront during business hours. “It’s printed double-sided, with white printing on black canvas,” Horst stated. “That way, it doesn’t clash with any colors you may have as branding for your business.” The purchase includes fiberglass rods at the top and bottom of the banner as well as aluminum mounts for

installing the banner. “The only thing a business needs to supply is the hardware for mounting the banner to their building, such as screws,” Horst said. The idea for the banner program was inspired by Lititz, which has a similar program. “We decided to use what they were doing and put our own spin on it,” Horst noted. “We wanted to provide a way to draw attention in an inviting way and let people know a business is open from a distance.” The color scheme and style of the banner were also chosen to help create a seamless look in Manheim, he explained, adding, “We wanted to create a unifying atmosphere in the town. It’s really a way of signifying

collaboration among merchants.” There is also an incentive for participating businesses to join the Manheim Area Chamber of Commerce if they are not already members, Horst said, because members can purchase the banner at a discount. Several businesses in Manheim already have their banners up, and banners will be available until supplies run out. Horst noted that while there are many exciting plans in the works in Manheim, there are also many great things already in place, and the banner program helps to reflect that. “Our town’s tagline is ‘Yours to Love,’ and that really speaks to people in a number of ways,” he said. “To our residents, it says, ‘Things are

MERCHANDISER - Manheim Central Edition - November 4, 2020 - 5 happening. Love your town. Be involved.’ To our visitors, we want them to love their experience in Manheim. To businesses and investors, we want them to know that this is an exciting time to invest in the town.” Horst encourages any downtown Manheim businesses to order an open banner. “Let’s support one another,” he said. “This banner program is a visual way to do that.” For more information or to purchase a banner, call Amanda Martin (left) and Jesamy Orozco, owners of 717-665-6330 or email Split Ends Salon, are recent participants in the info@manheimchamber.com. Lady Barons Battle Elco in L-L Semifinals

difficult to dig out of the hole, Barons’ coach Andrew Stoltzfus said, after his squad dropped a 4-0 decision to Elco. The early goal and a penalty kick score about 20 minutes into the contest put Manheim behind 2-0. They collected themselves at halftime. “I was really happy with the way we played at the start of the second half, Stoltzfus said. “We created some good opportunities and just couldn’t find that goal to really put pressure on them. The score line isn’t one that represented how well we battled and held

our own for long stretches of that game, and I told them at the end of the game, to not let that score Manheim Central ran into a overshadow anything that they’ve match up issue in its girls’ soccer accomplished this year. She, Olissa Clingenpeel and Shauna Lukus were named FirstTeam L-L League All-Stars. Summer Bates and Abbie Reed made Second Team. Despite missing time, Adair earned All-League honors. Lukus, a goalie, is the only senior to receive accolades. In a normal year, Central would be a No. 9 or No. 10 seed in districts, but with only eight teams in the tournament this season because of COVID-19, it appears the Lady Barons, winners of the last two District Three Class 3A titles, will miss making districts. and win two section crowns. Stoltzfus said it was definitely a crazy, unique, unorthodox season, but he is happy to complete this year for the seniors. “After the four-year journey they’ve been on, the idea of not having that senior year for them to play was a tough idea to try and grapple with, he said. “I give them a lot of credit for their mental toughness, though. No matter what the plan was, or how often it changed, they kept focused on what was happening, what they could control, and took advantage of their opportunities. They’re a great group of young ladies, first and foremost, and are going to be so successful at whatever their next adventure is. VOLLEYBALL The Lady Barons wrapped up their season winning a doubleheader against Lebanon Monday, Oct. 26. They won the first match 25-13, 25-9, 25-8. Emma Moyer and Grace Stoltzfus each had four aces. Stoltzfus added five digs and dished out 17 assists. Amber Kauffman was strong defensively with four digs and Madison Knier posted six kills. In the nightcap, Manheim won 25-6, 25-18, 25-19. Some new names appeared on the stat sheet, as Monica Bauman registered three aces, Raegan Nissley notched nine kills and Emma Damon had six digs. Stoltzfus dished out 16 assists. In a normal year, Manheim (9-5 league, 10-5 overall) would have qualified for districts, Barons’ coach Jason Moyer said. He noted that the team was willing to put in the work and make themselves better. “The seniors this year really stepped up and stepped into roles on the team where they were able to produce for the team and help us accomplish what we did, Moyer said. “They worked hard to improve throughout this shorted season and we were really seeing some improvements at the end. BOYS’ SOCCER The Barons wrapped up their season with a 1-0 loss in a defensive battle against Warwick Monday in Lititz. Tied at 0-0 at halftime, the Warriors scored the winning goal with 2:43 remaining in regulation. Manheim finished the season with a 4-6 Section Two record and 4-7 overall. The Barons scored 18 goals this season and gave up 23 goals. Manheim was a young team with only five seniors - Connor Caterbone, Drew Greiner, Luke Horst, Bradyn Dombach and Gabe Redcay. FIELD HOCKEY On Monday, MC lost to Warwick 4-0. Defensively, head coach Morgan Briggs said her team had

some great stops but just not enough fire power to put some goals away. She said her team stuck together throughout the 2020 season. After winning the Section Two title, making leagues and losing in the district quarterfinals in 2019, the Lady Barons were young this season and finished with a 5-8 record in 2020. Briggs, who started two freshmen and three sophomores, said she saw improvement and growth and better field awareness from

her players as the season went on. Anna Bosch and Kiley Hosler had phenomenal freshman seasons on varsity, Briggs said. She also noted sophomore defender Monica Herman, junior midfielder Mattie Hartzler and junior forward Kylie Kroesen had solid seasons. Briggs said Goalie Avery Wagner made some huge saves this season and had some beautiful dives. Baron seniors - Cami Lehman, Gillian Martin, Jenna Lutz and Rachel Fagan - provided great leadership, the coach added.

Salem UCC Plans “Bizarre Bazaar” BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER

“It’s our 35th year. It’s a big year for us,” Eileen Shipe commented, noting that for 34 years, Salem United Church of Christ (UCC) of Rohrerstown, 2312 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, has hosted a holiday bazaar on the first Saturday of November. The inventory for the inaugural event and those that followed were handcrafted by church members, who made ornaments, home décor, and more. Eventually, the bazaar began to include outside vendors, with Shipe coordinating their participation. Church members still contributed items that were featured in a type of silent auction. In June, while the church building was in its fourth month of closure to all activities, Shipe and her committee realized they needed a different plan for the bazaar. Rather than hold the bazaar in person, they thought to host it online. When it was not feasible for vendors to participate, the bazaar came full circle, with church members once again providing the entire inventory for what has been dubbed the Bizarre Bazaar. The event

will be held on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 9 a.m. to noon. Salem members have donated about 45 themed baskets for the bazaar. “They’re unbelievable,” Shipe said. “Most of the baskets are worth close to $100. They have everything under the sun: for kids, for adults, wine, Mickey Mouse, (and) Hershey Spa with a $100 gift certificate.” “I was really impressed,” added church council member and webmaster Alex DiMarzio. “They really turned out.” DiMarzio has cataloged the baskets and their contents at https://salem-uccroh.square.site. Individuals may visit the website until Friday, Nov. 6, to view the baskets, buy tickets to enter to win the lots of their choosing, and order food prepared by the Salem Servers. Additionally, tickets will be available at the Bizarre Bazaar from 9 to 11 a.m. on Nov. 7. The drawings will begin at noon and will be livestreamed on Salem UCC’s Facebook page. The recording will be posted at www.salemuccroh.org, and winners will be contacted. The Bizarre Bazaar’s menu will include quarts of

Orders may be picked up curbside at the church from 9 a.m. to noon on Nov. 7. Extras - as supplies last - will be available that morning for those who did not preorder. The proceeds from the Bizarre Bazaar will be used to continue restoring the historic church building and for mission outreach. DiMarzio noted that the council is considering expanding the iPad lending

program that enables homebound individuals to participate in online church activities. Guests are invited to visit Salem’s Sunday worship services, which begin at 10 a.m., in person or via the livestream at www.salem uccroh.org.
