Mount Joy Rd. Between 283 & Mount Joy

“This is one of our favorite days of the year,” said church member Audrey Buckner, describing the annual Chiques United Methodist Church (UMC) All Church Bazaar. “We love the food, the fellowship and the bargains.” The event will be held at the church, 1215 E. Main St., Mount Joy, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12.

This is the 50th year for the bazaar, and the milestone will be marked in several ways. Shoppers will be eligible to win a door prize, said bazaar committee member Georgia Myers, and the group will make 500 homemade apple dumplings for the bazaar. “People love our apple dumplings,” she said, noting that church members will spend several days before the bazaar making the treats.

The bazaar will feature a white elephant sale, with homemade crafts, Christmas tree ornaments, knitted items, pictures and more. “We like to call these our ‘attic treasures,’” Buckner said.

Food will be served as well, including pork, turkey and beef barbecue, hot dogs and a variety of soup. “We’ll have chicken corn soup and vegetable soup as well as some others,” Myers said. “We usually get a good variety.” Baked goods will also be available for purchase.

“This year, you can eat here again,” Myers said, noting that on-site dining was paused during the height of the pandemic. “The bazaar starts at 9 a.m., but it’s never too early for lunch.”

Although the bazaar is organized by the Women in Mission at Chiques UMC, it’s a team effort involving many members of the church, Myers emphasized. Proceeds from the event will benefit local organizations, including Water Street Mission and Samaritan’s Purse, as well as international missions.

Leftover items that are not sold at the bazaar are picked up by GreenDrop and donated to Purple Heart, continuing the church’s mission of giving back, Myers said.

She encourages anyone to come shopping on Nov. 12, adding, “There is something for everyone, and we don’t have high prices.”

For more information on the bazaar, call the church at 717653-5175.

Siloam Ethiopia will host a fundraiser meal at Ethiopian Evangelical Church, 175 Church St., Landisville, on Saturday, Nov. 19, from noon to 4:30 p.m. A variety of meals will be available to purchase for curbside pick up, and the funds raised from the event will support the organization’s free clinic in Harar, Ethiopia.

Each meal will include a choice of three different Ethiopian dishes, such as doro wat, a spicy chicken stew; misir wat, containing spiced red lentils; atakilt wat, a cabbage and potato stew; and kik alicha, a stew with split peas. Each meal will also be served with injera, a type of Ethiopian flatbread.

The clinic in Harar provides free medical services for people who are in need or homeless throughout the city. “The people of Lancaster have always been so generous in supporting our clinic,” said Wegayhu Ketema, co-founder of Siloam Ethiopia. “You can’t accomplish a big dream like this by yourself, and we’ve seen the heart that people in the area have through their continued support.”

Ketema grew up in Harar, where she lived in a onebedroom house with her grandmother. Each morning, she would see a nurse passing by on the way to work and wished to someday become a nurse herself and in some way be able to support the people in her hometown. She became a licensed nurse while living in India in 1985 and moved many more times before coming to the United States in 1989, fleeing religious persecution in Kenya.

Ketema has lived in Lancaster for 34 years now and works as a nurse at Lancaster General Hospital. She cofounded Siloam Ethiopia in 2015, and over the last seven years she has helped dig multiple wells to provide clean water for those in Harar in addition to offering the free clinic. Ketema has received abundant support from many people in the Landisville community, and several local missionaries have taken trips to Ethiopia to assist with projects there. “We knew that people would support us here,” she said. “Our fundraisers have always been very successful and allowed us to continue our work in Harar.”

For more information on Siloam Ethiopia, visit https://siloamethio.netlify .app/.

Members of Siloam Ethiopia will use the funds raised from the event to support the organization’s free clinic in Harar, Ethiopia.

4- MERCHANDISER - Manheim Central Edition - November 9, 2022 Cavod frompg 1 which is normally closed on Fridays, will open at 9 a.m. for those who want to give in person. An Evening of Celebration will be held at Cavod Theatre, 641 W. Main St., New Holland, from 6 to 11 p.m. Giving stations will be located in the theater. Dienner pointed out that the fundraiser will also benefit students of the Manheim location at 280 S. Oak St., which opened in 2021. “This is a combination of both campuses coming together at the main base,” said Dienner.

The evening event will include a dance party with a live DJ, dance and music performances by Cavod students, worship, and free food in the form of pizza, popcorn, cookies, and beverages. Door prize tickets to win tickets to Cavod Theatre and Cavod merchandise, such as hats, Tshirts, and sweatshirts, will be given out, and a drawing will be held each hour.

Cavod Academy offers a variety of classes in dance, voice, and more, with an emphasis on “creating with purpose.” An essential goal of the organization is to offer students a godly environment that inspires excellence in the arts while building community and impacting lives.

Dienner said that fundraisers like the Day of ThanksGIVING benefit children and adults in the New Holland and Manheim areas who want to take lessons in the environment Cavod offers. “Many families have come to (Cavod) as a place that is safe with a godly influence that sets us apart,” said Dienner. She added that she has seen students grow and gain motivation and even seen lives changed because of the high value Cavod places on each individual’s talents.

“This will be one of our biggest fundraisers of the year,” commented Dienner, who noted that the organization raises about 30% of its yearly budget. “We will have matching funds, so your gift will be stretched. No amount is too small.”
