“ExtraGive” Is Extraordinarily Important BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER

n a year when nonprofit organizations experienced significant losses of income opportunities, the Extraordinary Give (ExtraGive) hosted by the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF) is of particular importance. For 24 hours, beginning at 12:00:01 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 20, individuals may make donations via credit card to participating nonprofits at www.extragive.org. To inspire generous donations, LCCF has solicited sponsors for more than $500,000 in matching funds and other prizes. “Every year we have a stretch goal. That allows people to ‘give extra,’” explained LCCF communications manager Aaron Spangler. With the assistance of the stretch goal, last year’s ExtraGive raised $10.9 million, for a total of $53.5 million since the event’s inception in 2012. The hope is that the 2020 ExtraGive will do as well or better. Spangler noted that when the shutdown was announced in March, the ExtraGive organizers knew that this

year’s event would be different. “We were a little unsure about how everything was going to go,” Spangler commented, “but we have more sponsors this year than ever before.” More than 500 nonprofits will participate in the upcoming ExtraGive. To qualify, potential participants must serve Lancaster County residents, be registered 501(c)(3) organizations in good standing, and have independent audits or reviews. In typical years, about 80 to 100 ExtraGive social events are held across Lancaster County during the 24 hours. However, this year, LCCF is requiring organizations to adhere to COVID-19 mitigation guidelines, so Spangler anticipates fewer socials. To encourage participants to adapt, LCCF will award a creativity prize after the event, and it has posted downloadable photo props and social media images that individuals may use at home at www.extragive.org/info/downloads. “At its core, ExtraGive has been a digital event,” Spangler said. “From a pure mechanics standpoint,

If you want to experience a little of what it was really like to live as a Packer you can stay at the Harry Packer Mansion Inn, just down the street from the Asa Packer Mansion. Harry Packer, the elder Packer’s son, lived in the Victorian mansion, complete with 15-foot ceilings, marble fireplaces and gilded mirrors reflecting the elegance of the Victorian age. Guests can enjoy period furnishings and artwork at the inn and even take part in special wine tastings or murder mystery weekends, a nod to the fact that the home was the inspiration for Walt Disney World’s “Haunted Mansion.” Take a self-guided walking or Segway tour to learn more about some of the historic downtown.

ment as a main transport area for coal mining. The coal mined throughout what’s now known as the Pocono Mountains was transported from Mauch Chunk to Eastern markets via the Lehigh River, which helped to build the local economy and establish the community as an independent leader in a growing industrial market. Many of the transportation systems of the era, including canals, locks, dams and early gravity railroads, are still a strong part of the community’s culture today. The focus on coal and modern transportation methods brought early 19th-century entrepreneurs to the area, including Asa Packer, a Connecticut native and carpenter by trade. Packer realized the opportunity the coal region held and used his skills to build and repair canal boats to transport coal, eventually establishing the firm of A. & R. W. Packer, which built canal boats and locks for the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company. Packer and

JACQUELINE R. JURY Jacqueline (Jacquie) R. Jury, 83, of Manheim, PA passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 1, 2020 at Pleasant View Retirement Community, Manheim. She was the loving wife of 60 years to Dr. Lewis E. Jury. Born in Wiconisco, she was the daughter of the late John A. and Lillie A. E. (Dietrich) Zellers. Jacquie was a graduate of Millersville State College. She pursued a teaching career prior to dedicating her life to home and family. Jacquie and Lewis quickly grew roots in Manheim, Pennsylvania, becoming life-long Barons. Jacquie was a deeply devoted mother and grandmother. Her singular passion was caring for her family; nurturing a safe, successful, and fulfilling life for her grandchildren. Jacquie and Lewis traveled extensively with her favorite holidays being those spent with family in the Outer Banks, at Disney, along the Oregon coast, and in Puerto Rico. She exhibited great strength and courage as she faced many years of pain and illness. In addition to her husband, Jacquie is survived by her son, Lon K. Jury, husband of Dorothy Jury; a grandson, Logan M. Jury, husband of Cara (Bilheimer) Jury; two granddaughters: Erin M. and Kaylin H. Jury; two step-grandchildren, Sam and Maddy Lehr, and one great-granddaughter, Emerson. Jacquie’s caring and support were imparted to, and experienced by, others through her perseverance, determination, selflessness, courage, empathy, and forgiveness. The seeds of learning that she planted will continue to sprout, grow, and bloom within the lives of those she touched. The positive impact of her life upon others has yet to be fully experienced. Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Interment in Calvary United Methodist Cemetery, Wiconisco. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may send contributions in Jacquie’s memory to Wiconisco High School Alumni Scholarship Foundation, The Foundation for Enhancing Communities (TFEC), 200 North 3rd Street, 8th Floor, Harrisburg, PA 17101 (https://www.tfec.org/scholarships/wiconis co-high-school-alumni-scholarship-foundation/) or Compass Mark, 1891 Santa Barbara Drive, Suite 104, Lancaster, PA 17601 (https://www.compassmark.org/) To send the family on-line condolences, please visit: www.BuchFuneral.com Buch Funeral Home Manheim handled the arrangements.

Visit the Mauch Chunk Museum and Cultural Center to learn more about the town’s history, where there’s even a working model of the Switchback Railroad, one of the very earliest in the region. Any tour of the village must include Historic Stone Row, a series of stone row houses Asa Packer built for his engineers and foremen of the Lehigh Valley Railroad. You’ll also find Victorian buildings along Broadway now housing cute shops offering everything from handmade soaps and pottery to wine tasting rooms, antiques and art galleries. Don’t miss Somersault Letterpress, a vintage letterpress and creative studio, or Rainbow’s End, a quaint corner candy shop sure to amaze kids (and kids at heart) Outdoors enthusiasts can enjoy an entirely different aspect of Jim Thorpe, no matter what the season. After all, the many railways and waterways of the area’s storied past make for excellent outdoor recreation today. Take a 9-mile downhill bike trip on the Switchback Trail to the picturesque Broadway in downtown

ca. Visit whereandwhen.com/ jim-thorpe for more on Jim Thorpe, including the Jail House Museum, which is said to be haunted by the Ghosts of the Molly Maguires. Participants who stop by ECHOS to pick up their medal on designated days will also be entered to win one of several glass plates etched with the Great Turkey Hunt logo. Even though the race is not happening in the traditional way, Wells noted that the virtual event has its benefits, including being able to draw from a larger pool of participants who are not limited by geographic location. “Our first participant to sign up lives in North Carolina. He

used to live in Elizabethtown and helped with (local races), she said. “We also have someone signed up to participate from California. Wells said everyone is welcome to participate in what she hopes will be a successful fundraiser and fun event. “It’s a great way to get out, get some exercise, support a great cause and have some family fun, she stated. “It’s something we can all do together to support people in need and people who are going through a rough time.

The pandemic has made an impact on the agency, he noted, adding that Northwest EMS has worked with other groups to form a COVID-19 response team and provide a preshift checklist for local police departments. Kingsboro said the award is important to the agency, but the community is even more important. “We really believe in being an active part of the community,” he stated. “We get the majority of our support from community donations and memberships. This year, it’s more important than ever to protect yourself and the people you care about from the flu. It’s possible to get both COVID-19 and the flu at the same time — and to spread those viruses to the people around you. But you can greatly reduce your chance of catching the flu and spreading it to others by getting a flu shot. And if you do catch the flu, the vaccine can reduce the severity of your illness. On the Bulldogs next possession, MC senior defensive back, Corbin Moore, intercepted a pass. Central converted this turnover into seven points, as Novak found Sensenig for an 80-yard pass down the right sideline, cutting Wilson’s lead to 27-14. With 11:42 to play in the third quarter, the Barons forced another Wilson turnover, as linebacker Rocco Daugherty recovered a fumble. The sophomore had two solo tackles and four assists. The Barons also converted this turnover into another score, as Novak found Westley Borden on a slant for a 17-yard TD pass. Logan Shull hit the extra point to cut Wilson’s lead to 27-21. “Pappas is an absolute leader and I really like the way our inside linebacker Rocco Daugherty is coming along,” Hahn said about his defensive standouts. “He (Daugherty) is young and light in the butt.
