Collins Joins Manheim Community Library As Director By Chelsea Peifer
Paula Collins officially began as director of the Manheim Community Library on Oct. 7 - which turned out to be perfect timing to get acquainted with some of the things that make Manheim shine: football and the Farm Show. “I quickly found out that it is like Texas football here,” said Collins. “This is Manheim, Texas, and everybody goes to the games whether you have a player on the team or not. I love it.” Collins said she loves the sense of community in Manheim - not only surrounding football, but everything, including the beloved library located at 15 E. High St., Manheim. “I kept getting separated from our float during the (Manheim Farm Show) parade, because I would stop to talk to people, and everyone was so friendly,” recalled Collins. “I was asking, ‘What do I need to know about Manheim?’ And people had so much to say. I kept hearing, ‘Oh it’s a great community!’ and ‘We love our library!’” As director, Collins hopes to form partnerships with organizations throughout the Manheim Community
Library’s service area to bring new opportunities and promote lifelong learning in the community. She also plans to develop an outreach component to the library’s program schedule in order to provide services to individuals who are unable to visit the library due to various barriers, such as transportation or mobility issues. Collins currently lives in Clearfield County with her husband and two young adult children and commutes to Manheim. Growing up, she and her family visited Lancaster County every summer to go to Dutch Wonderland and enjoy other area attractions. “I’ve always loved Lancaster County,” said Collins. “There is so much going on here, and there is so much support for the libraries.” Library work has been a passion for her ever since she began working at her local library - the Joseph & Elizabeth Shaw Public Library in Clearfield - at age 18 as her first job after graduating high school. “I quickly fell in love with library services and helping people find what they were looking for,” recalled Collins. She earned her undergraduate degree as an

Great Turkey Hunt 5K To Support ECHOS By Chelsea Peifer
It may not be every day that you have your eyes peeled for rogue turkeys, but runners in the Great Turkey Hunt 5K will be encouraged to be on the lookout for just that. Stuffed turkeys will be hidden along the course for participants to find and trade in afterward for a frozen turkey. But that’s not all - pie will be served after the race, and all proceeds from the event will support Elizabethtown Community Housing & Outreach Services (ECHOS). Race director Grace Wells explained that her husband, Chuck Wells, who also facilitates the annual See Great Turkey Hunt 5K pg 3

tuition expenses. “Along with federal student aid, that gets them a little bit closer (to covering school costs),” said LDHL board president Samantha Eck. Eck noted that while LDHL has offered interest-free loans to college students from Lancaster County for nearly 60 years, this is the first time it has created a lending program for students attending technical or trade schools. To ease into the TOTE Loan Program, interest-free loans will initially be available to students who will attend the 12-month or 18-month Practical Nursing or 16-month Automotive Technology Specialized Associate Degree programs at Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC). “It’s a pilot, (so) I’m sure we will learn things doing it,” Eck said. “Our goal will be to open (the program) to any (school), but we have to start with baby steps.” The funding for the loans came from the estate of E. Ann Klein, who died in 2007. Klein had distributed funds to several organizations, with the stipulation that they receive interest payments from the invested money for the first 10 years. Now that the time has expired, LDHL has received the principal, and the resulting cash in hand will allow the funding of loans. When deciding how to use the bequest, the LDHL board looked at
Klein’s life for inspiration. Klein was the daughter of one of the owners who turned New Holland Machine Company into a thriving business. She held a pilot’s license and had an interest in antique cars. According to the Elizabethtown Historical Society, Klein and her husband had more than 55 antique automobiles stored in Elizabethtown. When Klein was unable to source tires and other parts to restore her vehicles, she launched the Universal Tire Company and later Klein Kars. While business principles can be learned in a traditional four-year college, trades like auto repair are typically leaned at a different kind of school, and LDHL wanted to support those efforts. “This is a need that our community has,” Eck remarked, adding that while public perception may be that attending trade, occupational, and technical programs is relatively low cost, the reality is that tuition may run as high as $20,000. LDHL expects to receive applications from adults who have already entered the workforce and now want to change careers or to enhance their skills, Eck said. “We’re learning how big of an audience there is (for this),” she added. Unlike the existing college loan program, which has firm deadlines and mails checks every year on Aug. 1, the TOTE Loan Program will have a rolling application process. Funds will be disbursed in

Food Bank Receives KidCents Grant The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank has been awarded a $30,000 KidCents Regional Grant from The Rite Aid Foundation. Funds will be used for the organization’s youth programs across the 27-county region, including school pantries, Kids Café sites and BackPack Plus Programs. The KidCents Regional Grant Program, which provides grants of $15,000 to $30,000, funds specific out-of-school time programs focused on children’s nutrition, physical fitness and academic success. The KidCents program also annually supports a select group of more than 400 nonprofit, childrenfocused organizations that are committed to improving the health and well-being of children living in the communities Rite Aid serves, as well as national organizations focused on critical children’s issues, including The Fred Rogers Company, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and Folds of Honor. In this cycle of KidCents Regional Grants, The Rite Aid Foundation awarded 233 nonprofit grants totaling more than $5 million. Grants were available in select counties in the following states: California, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Washington. KidCents Regional Grants support nonprofit organizations with programs that serve children in kindergarten through grade 12 and improve quality of life in Rite Aid communities. The grants support three of KidCents’ primary focus areas for improving the health and well-being of children: healthy eating, active living and education. To be considered, programs and projects were required to take place during out-of-school-time, with priority given to programs that support communities in need. This is the second cycle of KidCents Regional Grants. In the first cycle, The Rite Aid Foundation awarded 180 grants, totaling more than $4 million. Another cycle of KidCents Regional Grants will launch in 2020. To learn more about the program, readers may visit www.riteaid.com/grants.

It took us like three weeks to mold it and get it together and by the time we got to E-town we had it rolling and then we just went from there.” Led by senior quarterback Evan Simon, the Barons scored 54 points against E-town and tallied a whopping 547 total yards on offense, collected the first of seven straight wins. In those seven wins, the offense averaged 49 points a game and almost 300 yards passing. The win streak came to an end Friday, Nov. 8 in a 31-28 loss in the District Three Class 5A quarterfinal match against Warwick. The teams were tied 28-28 and the Barons defense provided a valiant goalline stand, but the Warriors kicked the winning field goal from 17 yards out with four seconds left in the game. The last team to beat Manheim Central twice in the same year was Lampeter-Strasburg in 2010. So how much did Hahn’s team improve from that week three loss to Warwick? “We were a heck of a lot better,” he said. “It’s a shame someone had to lose that game, but that’s football. That’s what happens. Someone wins, someone loses. “We’ll be back. We’ll be hungrier than ever. That’s something to be proud of.” It was a game that featured two ties and three lead changes and plenty of big dramatic plays. Simon, Troy Kolk and Jake Harbach each had shoe-string tackles on defense to prevent look gains by Warwick. Ben Wagner made an acrobatic interception in the end zone to prevent a touchdown. Offensively, Wagner ran under a perfectly placed pass from Simon, who rolled to his right and lofted a pass across to the middle of the field to a wide open Wagner, who outraced two defenders for a 78-yard score. Simon had an electrifying 64-yard TD run in the third quarter to help the Barons regain the lead. The QB rolled to his left and kept the ball, spinning out of a tackle and tip-toeing the Barons’ sideline and then - boom he was gone with a burst into the end zone. Logan Shull connected on the extra point to make it 21-20 Barons. Simon rolled right and found J.D. Grube wide open in the middle of the field for a 33-yard TD, tying the score at 28-28 with 6:19 remaining in the Photo by Thom Swarr game. could pass the ball. They could run the ball and they dominated on defense. This season something was different, and Hahn could see the Barons’ offense wasn’t firing on all cylinders. Two close wins over Susquehanna Township and Hempfield were followed by lopsided losses to Warwick (37-7) and Wilson (49-14). The week three loss to Warwick was a real eyeopener and changed the identity of the Barons. The football coach went to his book shelf. He wasn’t going to give up on these boys.
They didn’t deserve that, he thought. So the teacher wasn’t afraid to learn. He adapted and changed his playing calling for his personnel. “We had to,” he said, “because what we had wasn’t working. We had to find something else. Because that’s what you do. You can’t give up. That’s what we did.” He dusted off an old book he found and read up on a popular offense from about 30 years ago. It was a book with the basic principles of the Run-andShoot, an offense that spreads the field with four wide receivers and plays off the strengths of mobile quarterback with an accurate arm and fast, reliable
class. In three years, this group won three section titles, two district titles, (a state runner-up), and took Warwick down to the wire in districts. “Everybody just thinks, ‘hey, you’re Manheim, you just poop out football players all the time,’ “ he said. “No, these kids work awfully hard and put in 365 days a year in developing their skills, developing that hard, work ethic. They have no quit in them. They just fight and fight and fight. And that’s what these seniors brought to the table. That’s what these seniors do every year. I’m proud of them.” The coach was asked what Simon, who verbally committed to Rutgers University, meant to the program. “Evan has been a shining light for

four years,” Hahn said. “Even as a freshman you could just see, he contributed in different ways, like helping us in practice as much as he did. He didn’t always get the playing time; he got some, but just what he accomplished, his leadership, his demeanor. “Every year he turned it up when he needed to turn it up. He let others do. And that’s a unique quality. Some guys are just full charge go hard all the time. He was able to lead when he needed to lead and let other guys do their thing when they needed to. And that’s special. He’s got a bright future ahead of him.” After the loss, there were a few tears, but more smiles among the players, who shared hugs and seemed

to exhale. There is a lot of pressure on football players in Manheim and these players looked relieved, knowing they gave all they had. Simon saw a reporter waiting to talk to him. He walked over to the reporter and said, “Can I make my rounds quick? I’ll be over.” Simon huddled with groups of teammates, asking, “Did you leave it all out there?” Each teammate, nodded, some smiled at him and they embraced. He posed for photos with teammates. Some classmates climbed over the fence to get to him on the sideline; they too wanted a photo. Then, as he promised, Simon made his way back to the reporter. “First off, I’ve been part of one of the greatest programs in the state,” said Simon who finished with more than 8,000 passing yards for his career, placing second all-time in the L-L League. “I am extremely blessed I’ve built these relationships. It starts with the coaches. It goes so much more than football for me. Secondly, my family has supported me throughout my career, even when I didn’t play quarterback. They took me to quarterback camps and all that stuff.” Simon said his senior class was close, that they lost only five games in five years He said that was five too many losses, but they were still successful. He listed his most memorable moments. “Never losing to Cocalico was my favorite memory,” he said. “Number two is two district championships and three would be Governor Mifflin - that last drive.” GIRLS’ SOCCER The Barons lost 1-0 to Archbishop Wood in the Class 3A state quarterfinal Saturday, Nov. 9. Manheim finished with a 20-6 record. The 20 wins ties the most wins in program history. Manheim defended its District Three title, has a lot to be proud of, and, after the game, that’s the content Barons’ coach Andrew Stoltzfus delivered. “It was a pretty simple message after the game. We were proud of them,” he said. “They accomplished a lot this season, came together to figure out our short comings through the regular season and became a very tough team to beat in the post season. They accomplished as much as any other team in program history, and it’ll be hard to match the four-year career that these seniors have had.” For the seniors, this was their 28th

The Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF) has announced that the eighth annual Extraordinary Give will take place on Friday, Nov. 22. On that day, from midnight to 11:59 p.m., individuals can visit www.ExtraGive.org, choose from more than 500 local nonprofit organizations, make a secure online donation, and have their gift stretched through a stretch pool of at least $500,000. Also, an additional $50,000 in prizes will be offered to participating nonprofit organizations throughout the day in the form of various incentive structures. The funds for the stretch pool and the prizes are available thanks to the LCCF and presenting sponsors Rodgers & Associates, High Foundation, and additional corporate sponsors. The 2018 Extraordinary Give was a record-breaking day, generating $10.2 million from more than 23,500 donors to support 493 nonprofit organizations. Since the event started in 2012, the Extraordinary Give has engaged more than 30,000 people in giving, supported more than 500 nonprofits, and raised $42 million for the community. New for the 2019 Extraordinary Give, the minimum gift amount has been reduced from $25 to $10. The change was made with the goal of inspiring more individuals to participate and generating more engagement from across the region. The new minimum amount aligns with the Community Foundation strategic priority of inclusion and aims to continue increasing the number of unique donors
who make a gift during the event. A number of returning features are planned this year, as well. The Extraordinary Give will again offer an opportunity for individuals to leverage their social media networks in support of a nonprofit they care about by becoming a “Fundraising Champion.” Fundraising Champions may activate their personal networks to generate giving for the causes they care about using a personal link. To become a Fundraising Champion, readers may visit www.extragive.org, find their favorite organization, and choose the button that says “Fundraise.” The members of the Give Fleet, a volunteer driving squad open to the public, will promote the event by applying a temporary decal to their personal or business vehicle. Decals will be available through the LCCF. Give Fleet volunteers will apply their decals at any time during the month of November. Any licensed driver is eligible and can register to participate at www.extragive.org/info/extra -opportunities. On Nov. 22, ExtraGive Hot Spots will be located in Columbia and Elizabethtown, at The Shops at Rockvale, and at other venues in order to highlight locations across Lancaster County. Additional details are forthcoming. The ExtraGive Fest, the Extraordinary Finale, will take place from 6 p.m. to midnight on Nov. 22 at the Lancaster Marriott and Lancaster County Convention Center, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster. The event, free and open to the public,
will offer the community an opportunity to count down the final hours of the Extraordinary Give. Designed by Lititz-based event company ATOMIC and local firm Shumaker PDT, ExtraGive Fest will serve as the central hub for the Extraordinary Give, feature local and regional bands, show screens that will actively display social media content uploaded by people using #ExtraGive, and have social media stations for photo-ops and giving stations for attendees to donate throughout the evening. New this year will be the ExtraGive Food Truck Lane. Guests can enjoy a selection of local food vendors parked on South Queen Street adjacent to the Lancaster County Convention Center. Downtown Lancaster will again be aglow with a 14-story light show at the Griest Building in Penn Square, which will feature changing colors and patterns from 5 p.m. to midnight. For more information, including a list of participants, readers may visit www.extragive.org. Pictured on front: The eighth annual Extraordinary Give, set for Friday, Nov. 22, will give individuals the opportunity to donate to participating organizations of their choice and have their donation stretched through a stretch pool of at least $500,000 and an additional $50,000 in prizes. Various special events will take place in Lancaster County throughout the day, concluding with the ExtraGive Fest from 6 p.m. to midnight in downtown Lancaster.

The Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster (MCCL) has announced two new directors. Monica Hochstedler Carlson and Melody Stahl will direct Prelude Music and Choristers, respectively. Prelude Music is a nonauditioned class for children in kindergarten and grade one that engages children with music through moving, playing, listening, and singing. Choristers I and II are non-auditioned classes for children in grades two through five and grades six throught eight that develop vocal and choral skills in a relaxed, fun atmosphere. Carlson holds a Master of Music degree in piano pedagogy and performance from Westminster Choir College and a Bachelor of Arts degree in music education from Goshen College. Having recently relocated to Lancaster, Carlson formerly taught music in public schools as well as at Eastern Mennonite Elementary School in Harrisonburg, Va. She served as a private piano instructor at Shenandoah Valley Preparatory Music and Woodberry Forest School and was an instructor at Red Wing Academy.
Carlson has Kodaly and Dalcroze training. Carlson will guide Prelude Music with a child-centered approach to teaching music. Along with directing, Carlson will serve as choir manager assistant. Stahl holds a Bachelor of Science in music education with a focus in piano from Millersville University. Her undergraduate involvement included serving as a Music Research Fellow and as accompanist for the University Choir. She also served as supervisor for the Pre-College Program associated with Lancaster Mennonite School. In addition to her credentials, Stahl has had extensive experience with MCCL as an alumna of the choir, an assistant for Prelude Music and Choristers, and an accompanist for stateside and international tours. The mission of MCCL is training children and youths to glorify Jesus Christ through excellent choral singing. The choir’s repertoire reflects the musical diversity of the church around the world and through time. MCCL is a program of Lancaster Mennonite School and welcomes children from all church backgrounds.

When Millersville resident Jesse Miller was coping with the loss of his sight last year, he did not foresee that a year later he would be confident enough to rappel 125 feet down the side of a building. However, that is exactly what he envisions for himself on Friday, Nov. 22, as part of Lancaster’s Extraordinary Give fundraising event. Jesse will be one of up to 92 people who will rappel the side of Holiday Inn Lancaster, 26 E. Chestnut St., Lancaster, during Eye Drop 2019 to raise $100,000 to support VisionCorps’ rehabilitation, education, and employment services for people who are blind or visually impaired. Among the local public figures joining Jesse will be police chief Jarrad Berkihiser, fire chief Scott Little, and Isaac’s Restaurants mascot Filbert. Jesse, now age 42, was legally blind in his left eye from a benign meningioma he experienced in his childhood, and he retained excellent sight in his right eye until he suffered a stroke in that eye on Oct. 16, 2018. decrease in vision meant a profound life change for the father of four, who had worked as an agricultural metal fabricator, traveling up and down the East Coast. The first three months of adjusting to his new situation was incredibly challenging, Jesse said. Then, he learned about VisionCorps from his aunt and made an appointment with caseworker Sue Miller (no relation). Sue connected Jesse with orientation and mobility instructor Jennifer Eaton, who talked with him about training opportunities. Eaton came to Jesse’s home weekly for two months, walking him around his house and neighborhood to help him commit his surroundings to memory. By the end of May this year, Jesse was ready to go back to work, and he accepted a manufacturing position with VisionCorps’ Enterprise Group. He worked part-time there until Oct. 14, when he began full-time employment - just one year after his eye stroke. “I wanted to learn more independence first, so I eased into work here,” Jesse said. “That’s what I like about VisionCorps. They let you go at your speed, at your level of progress.” So, why is Jesse, still relatively new to his sightless situation, participating in Eye Drop? “I’ve always been (an adventur-

Church Announces New Stake Presidency On Sept. 15, the Lancaster Pennsylvania Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints met for its semiannual stake conference. At this meeting, former Stake President Conrad Knudson and his two counselors, David Kenley and Allen Zerbe, were released from their callings in the stake presidency, and a new presidency was called. Replacing Knudson as the Lancaster Pennsylvania Stake president is Brad Smith of Lititz. Serving as his first counselor is president Allen Zerbe of Quarryville, formerly the second counselor. The new second counselor is president Byron Wilson of York. The stake president is also assisted by a high council, consisting of 12 men. Two visiting church leaders attended the conference to oversee the selection of the new stake
presidency and to address the large congregation assembled for the conference. General Authority Seventy Elder Richard J. Maynes of Utah and Area Seventy Elder Kevin E. Calderwood of Northern Virginia set apart the new presidency, and they delivered speeches to the audience. When a stake holds a conference, it lasts two days with leadership meetings on Saturdays and talks by church leaders and selected members of the various congregations, along with special musical numbers on both days. All wards (larger congregations) and branches (smaller congregations) in a stake meet together in one building on Stake Conference Sunday for approximately two hours. All nine units of the stake convened at the stake center, 1136 Sunwood Lane, Lancaster, to

learn more about Jesus Christ. The congregations included Elizabethtown, Ephrata, Lancaster, Lititz, Shrewsbury, West York, and York Wards along with two smaller branches - the Columbia and Dover branches. The nine units make up a stake, which will be led by the new stake president and his two counselors; Smith will preside over all of Lancaster and York counties’ Latter-day Saints. The Church’s Newsroom describes a stake president as “the lay leader of a stake, which is a geographic subdivision similar to a Catholic diocese.” Serving as a volunteer, usually for a period of approximately nine years, the stake president oversees Church programs and stake members in their efforts to follow Jesus Christ. He also oversees the activities of the bishops or ward leaders.
Visiting General Authorities met with local church leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Sept. 15 at the Lancaster Pennsylvania Stake Center in Lancaster to participate in the release of the former stake presidency and the calling of a new presidency. General Authorities in attendance and the newly called stake presidency are (from left) General Authority Seventy Elder Richard J. Maynes of Utah, First Counselor Allen Zerbe of Quarryville, Stake President Brad Smith of Lititz, Second Counselor Byron L. Wilson of York, and Area Seventy Elder Kevin E. Calderwood of Northern Virginia. Smith, Zerbe, and Wilson will oversee the business of the Church in Lancaster and York counties. FRI. NOVEMBER 22, 2019 - 4PM & SAT. NOVEMBER 23, 2019 - 9AM
