Baron Stage will present “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” BY CATHY MOLITORIS
“In ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,’ four siblings discover a magical wardrobe that leads them to the land of Narnia,” said Manheim Central High School junior Eden Marcott. “There, they join forces with the lion Aslan to defeat the White Witch and bring back spring to Narnia.” Manheim Central will present the
show at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 17 and 18, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 19, at the Manheim Central Middle School, 216 White Oak Road. “It’s a thrilling adventure full of magic and bravery.” explained Eden, who portrays Lucy Pevensie, the youngest of the children. Senior Alayna Stoltzfus noted that she feels a personal connection to the show. “The story is written See Baron Stage pg 2

hen our residents are engaged, it gives them a sense of purpose and value,” said Jonathan Hollinger, president and CEO of Pleasant View Communities. “As we age, our worlds get smaller.” For the residents of Pleasant View and the surrounding community, the world is about to get just a bit bigger. The retirement community held a ceremonial groundbreaking of its Hoffer Farm project earlier this month, with construction work set to begin by early December. The Hoffer Farm project will capitalize on the space available across from Pleasant View’s main campus, where Pleasant View founder Edna Hoffer’s farm is located. When the project is complete, it will feature a variety of facilities to engage both residents and
“When we started planning this, we thought, ‘What is a Pleasant View need that can equal a community benefit? What is a community need that can equal a Pleasant View benefit?’” “ We are looking to focus on engagement and vibrancy,” Hollinger said at a breakfast meeting about the project. “How do we become part of the bigger community? How do we invite the community in? It’s about creating a space for learning and discovery.” To accomplish those goals, Pleasant
View will partner with a variety of community organizations, including the Manheim Community Library. The library will move from its location in downtown Manheim to the Hoffer Farm, where it will almost double its space. Other features of the Hoffer Farm will include a cultural center with an event space for learning and engagement, a teaching kitchen that will be open to the public, a maker space and a child care center. “When we started planning this, we thought, ‘What is a Pleasant View need that can equal a community benefit? What is a community need that can equal a Pleasant View benefit?’” Hollinger said. The child care center is a perfect example, he noted, adding that Manheim does not currently have a child care facility in town. Pleasant View has been collaborating with make717 in Lancaster to

Shopping small this holiday season BY CATHY MOLITORIS

than by supporting them during the busiest shopping season of the year? “We hope the community will rally around our small-town businesses during this holiday season,” said Kristie Schmid, executive director of the Manheim Area Chamber of Commerce. “When you shop locally, your money goes back into this community. Dan E. Hendrickson has published a new book, “Magi Apprentice,” a work of historical fiction that focuses on the Wise Men written about in the Bible. Set in Parthia in the years immediately preceding the birth of Jesus, “Magi Apprentice” tells the story of a young cavalry officer named Rassan who is also an adept student of astronomy. Rassan is convinced of the significance of the configurations that he studies with the Magi, and he remains committed to following the stars despite repeated attempts on his life and the deceit of a young woman he intended to marry. When
sacred star charts are rescued after an act of murder, Rassan travels to Babylon to return the charts to the headmaster of the Astronomical Sect of the Magi and enter into an apprenticeship with him. However, Rassan becomes a target in a power struggle that threatens the Astronomical Sect. Hendrickson conducted extensive researched to ensure the book’s biblical, historical, and astronomical accuracy. Born in Sheridan, Wyo., in 1962, Hendrickson has been living in Lancaster for the last 26 years. He earned a degree in journalism from Casper
Community College in 1985. He later received a degree in biblical theology and has been a minister since 1988. Hendrickson now also owns an auto dealership, body shop and detail shop in Manheim. He has been involved with the martial arts, earning black belts in tang soo do and tae kwon do and a high brown belt in han foo wa. He has been a senior instructor at martial arts schools off and on for over 20 years. In the last six years, he has self-published eight books. Two have made it to the No. 1 spot as Amazon Best Sellers in
their categories. Two of his books have been awarded medals from Readers Favorite, one book won two medals from Feathered Quill, and one book was named Historical Fiction of the Year with Online Book Club. He has done several radio and podcast interviews concerning his books. “Magi Apprentice” is available in hardbound and paperback at Amazon and Barnes & Noble. It is also available in digital form for Kindle and Nook. For more information about Hendrickson’s work, visit https://danehendrickson.com.

For this year’s challenge, students are asked to develop a plan for the replacement of an aging multi-lane roadway that will reconnect previously separated neighborhoods and incorporates community needs, such as accommodating bicycle and pedestrian traffic, allowing for new business development and ensuring the smooth flow of traffic. The proposed solution should also consider additional costs to restore the affected community. Regional Innovations Challenge winners will be selected and invited to present their solutions to the PennDOT

For this year’s challenge, the Associated Pennsylvania Constructors (APC) has donated $2,500 and the American Council of Engineering Companies of Pennsylvania (ACEC/PA) has donated $1,500 for a combined total award of $4,000 to the statewide winning team. Jenn Knepper knows a good idea when she sees one. Sixteen years ago, Knepper read about a unique gift fair being staged in Harrisburg by a women’s group. She reached out to the group, and after some thought, she came to the conclusion that the concept would be something that could benefit the Lancaster County community as well. Fast forward to 2023 and the annual Gifts That Give Hope (GTGH) alternative gift fair is alive, well and thriving. The event is known for its ability to bring nonprofits together, its unique approach to gift giving and its propensity for fostering hope. “We want people to think more about the things they buy and what goes into them,” said Knepper. “The gift fair is a connection point for people to find out about people who are working to make the world a better place. I describe it as a live version of a gift catalog, except you walk into the event. We want people to learn more about the issues at people’s hearts.” This season’s GTGH gift fair will be presented on Sunday, Dec. 10, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Nearly 40 nonprofits and a dozen marketplace vendors are expected to be there. Food trucks will be stationed outside to enhance the atmosphere. “Have you ever seen someone who has no hope?” said Gustavo Valdez, president of Kairos Ministries Guatemala, one of the participating nonprofits. “That is a person who has no future, no way out. Hope is a way to tell people that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. With hope, there’s a reason for tomorrow.” Perhaps the best ways to describe the gifts that will be available at GTGH’s fair are environmentally friendly, ethically sourced and meaningful. There are tuitions, mentorship programs, books, therapeutic camps and charitable donations that can be purchased in someone’s name. It takes the concept of being more blessed to give than to receive to a whole other level. “I’ve been blessed in so many ways. Giving helps me not forget where I’m coming from,” said Luisa Tapia, founder of My Peruvian
FREE
Treasures, one of the gift fair’s marketplace vendors. “We almost Thursday, November 23rd have a duty to give. It’s really connected to love.
